No getting around it--Musiq (who drops the "Soulchild" half of his moniker this time out)--really, really sounds like Stevie Wonder. On Soulstar, though, tracks such as "Momentinlife" channel the great man with such beauty and good nature that a listener can't help but just go along with it. The Philly-bred Musiq makes other disarming moves like asking point blank "You love me, don't you, girl?" and making silly allusions to a certain board game on "Womanopoly," which is nonetheless a celebration of its female subject's climb out of hard times. And following on from his previous disc's cover of George Harrison's "Something," he takes on the Stones with a no-excuses-needed take on "Miss You" (note the album's busiest bass line). Only the most rabid fan would claim that Musiq equals even a second-level Stevie effort, but while this plays, it's hard to argue with its vibe. --Rickey Wright

great cd.. you can tell he puts a lot of time and feeling into this music.

3 out of 5 stars Musiq Soulchild- Soulstar.......2007-06-21

This album was damn near unheard of. I mean it did not even crack the top 25 album sales in its debut week. The problem with this album is that it is a mix of to many different styles. Unlike Juslisen which fit together perfectly, this album is a mess. And they did not choose a good single for this album as it did not break the top forty songs once. Overall sales wise this album was a failure. It was not a failure music wise, even though it was no where near the level of Juslisen. It still managed to produce a few solid if not great tracks. Such as my favorite on the whole album, "Youloveme" which has bounce to it, and it just has a great story, its the man simply asking his woman... "You love me dont you???". Then there is the very smooth and relaxing "Infatueightis" which describes the infatuation stage of love. I mean other than those two stand outs the rest is decent at best. Like i said earlier the biggest problem with this album is that it does not fit well. All the songs dont go together. But it is still better than Aijuswanaseing by far. Soulstar is at least listenable. Only buy if you are a huge Musiq fan.

4 out of 5 stars This cd is really cool..give him a break.......2006-09-21

I love Musiq ( even when he had the Soulchild, don't get me wrong all the songs aren't hits BUT for the most part he is doing his thing on this album. Cut my man a break, he is trying and I look forward to his new album. I love his voice, his music and him in general. The tracks that are my fav's are:
Infatueighties
Whoknows
FortheNight
Youknowyouloveme
Momentinlife
Womanopoly
Buy, borrow(from a friend or Library) this Cd it's mellow like the way Neo-soul is supposed to be.

Toodles,

3 out of 5 stars Soulstar - 3.5 stars.......2006-05-28

This is Musiq's 3rd album and in listening to it I could hear that he was trying to branch out a little from the straight r&b sound that permeated his previous releases. The sounds on this disc are a lot "slicker" and a little less soulful.

I became a fan of Musiq because at the time of his debut release, there was no music being played on the radio that sounded like his - he had and still has his own distinct style of singing. While I love his debut & sophomore efforts, SOULSTAR is a bit of a departure from the sound of his first two albums but it's definitely not the failure that some deem it yet it's not a 5-star effort either in my opinion but I'm not disappointed in having made this purchase.

The standout tracks to me are:

SOULSTAR (featuring Carol Riddick a fantastic singer in her own right. She was Jill Scott's former back-up singer and she has released on of the best r&b discs I've heard thus far this year! If you can find her album, I'd HIGHLY recommend it.)

WOMANOPOLY, INFATUEIGHTIES (sounds very Marvin Gaye-esque), WHO KNOWS, WHEREAREYOUGOING, YOU LOVE ME, BABYMOTHER, THE REASON & MOMENT IN LIFE. I also liked his remake of the Stones' MISS YOU - he definitely made it soulfully funky and didn't totally copy the original.

**The only disappointing track to me is the duet with Bilal, DON'T STOP. Considering how much I love each individual's music, I was expecting to hear magic when they collabo'd but this track is nothing special and falls flat.

To those who are sampling Musiq's work and have never heard much of his music, I'd recommend buying his debut or 2nd album first because this one is a little departure from the sound of those two and for fans - if you like the guy, support his music - sample a few tracks before buying but overall, it's an "ok" collection not as cohesive as the first two but not a crashing failure either.

5 out of 5 stars These other people are buggin..........2006-01-29

I don't know why these people on this page are hating on this album so much. I can listen to it straight through, over and over again. The tempo, mood, and topics change throughout. I actually enjoy this album more than his previous two. I'm surprised there were no "hits" on this album. But if you need to hear "hits" on the radio in order to think something is a valuable piece of music, you don't deserve to be writing reviews. Standout tracks to me are "thereason", "forthenight", and the disc opener: "soulstar". I'm not even joking, I am listening to this album as I type this. I can't wait to hear Musiq's next album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars huge variety of musics from Turkey.......2006-01-31

from website:

"The first of a series from Soulstar Records, focusing on the music in different countries. This set presents the many shades of a unique musical culture. The repertoire reaches from relaxed soul melodies to Anatolian rock. The extraordinary tracks include smooth R'n'B, cool Drum'n'Bass, authentic folk music, Mediterranean rhythm, innovative Sufi-sounds, twisted party-grooves, modern club-beats and fusions of so-called arabesque music, Turkish fado, cover-versions of evergreens, jazzy moments, oriental hip hop, folk-revival in a pop outfit and so on. Tarkan, Sezen Aksu, Mustafa Sandal or Sertab Erener may be the best known artist exports, but music from Turkey is more versatile and as colourful as the variety of people that live in this big country (e.g. Kurds, Arabs, Cherkessians, Georgians, Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, Bosnians, Albanians, Laz people, Chechens, Bulgarians, Tartars and so on). Compiled by Gülbahar Kültür."

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Musiq reads my mind about Love.......2006-09-21

Soulstar is the soundtrack of my life, and the awnser to every problem that i can't awnser with logical reasoning. With every track theirs an awnser, solution, or idea that makes you think, about life, love, and decisions. He is the male India Arie. I loved Musiq ever since Ijustwannasing. "Mary Go Round", "Me and You Against", and "Just Friends" were my favorites off his first album and now his third album i love every song. I must have played this album every where i went. Musiq is also good for just listening to get your thoughts in order. He pusts relationships in retrospect with harmony and rhythm. If your not going to buy it, do yourself a favor and just skim through. There's something for everyone.

                3 out of 5 stars yea.......2006-09-17

Give Musiq a hot track and he's gonna tear it up.
As evident on Womanopoly, and infatueighties.
but then again, i dont like slow beats.
But this gets a 3 off the strength of the 2 tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but not Musiq's best.......2004-08-26

Musiq's soulstar his third album release was somewhat mediocre compared to his earlier albums, don't get me wrong I love this album from tracks like "whoknows" which is a song about a guy trying to take it to the next level with his girl which he feels could catapult them into love, its basically about letting go and acting on their attractions toward one another. On this track excellent vocals, instumentals, and lyrics, good song. Another song I like is "momentinlife" which is song about what we all really want a moment in our lives where every thing is working out for us accompanied by Cee-lo and Kindred the Family Soul this is an astounding uplifting track. I also enjoyed his Rolling Stones remake of "miss you" and the intro "soulstar" which is a beautiful song with melodic vocals of Carol Riddick, the beat, harmony and overall theme, you'll listen to that one at least five or six times in a row. Also this album has somewhat of a Stevie Wonder feel to it. Like in the song "where are you going" kinda gives you that vibe but I love that track. Besides the tracks that I have named this album becomes repititous at times like he just trying to come out with an album fast. Musiq's attempts to make us dance with songs like "forthenight", "don't stop" featuring Bilal, and "Romancipation" are futile efforts and shouldn't be further explored. Like I said ok But not his best.
