Customer Reviews:
The Isley Two-On-Ones Continue (Thank God).......2007-05-24
BGO RECORDS should be commended for reissuing those classic 70s and 80s Isley Brothers albums as two-on-one cds. The liner notes are great and the remastered sound is excellent. I'm looking forward to the next Isley two-on-one (1981's INSIDE YOU paired with 1982's THE REAL DEAL).
LIVE IT UP (1974) and THE HEAT IS ON (1975) are the Isleys at the peak of their 70s creative and commercial power. By now the Isleys have settled into a formula of funky clavinet riffs, stinging guitar solos, and smooth "sweet lady" ballads. But this formula still sounds fresh over thirty years later. Four classic top ten r&b hits ("Live It Up", "Midnight Sky", "Fight The Power" and "For The Love Of You") are here along with such quiet storm classics as "Hello It's Me" and "Make Me Say It Again Girl".
LIVE IT UP became the Isleys' first of 10 #1 r&b albums, while THE HEAT IS ON surprisingly went to #1 on the r&b AND pop charts. Hey BGO, how about pairing 1977's GO FOR YOUR GUNS with 1980's GO ALL THE WAY? Or 3+3 with HARVEST FOR THE WORLD? (Just a thought)

Customer Reviews:
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

often lightweight, with very slick production, but mostly well-written.......2007-05-15
Released in June of 1990, CSN's "Live It Up" album usually takes a beating from big fans of the group, and it's understandable in a sense, but the criticism also seems unfair and excessive.
Admittedly, based on this album, it seems CSN have almost completely forgotten how to rock out. Apart from the album-opening title track and "If Anybody Had A Heart"--the latter of which has a lame, overblown beamed-in bridge--not one track even remotely qualifies as a rocker. And even in regard to those two, the title track, written and largely played by Joe Vitale, is driven by a mid-'80s synth riff (the liner notes indicate it was actually recorded in February of 1986); and "If Anybody Had A Heart", written by J.D Souther and Danny Kortchmar, is a jarringly sugary pop-rock ballad (with wannabe-hard-rocker Kortchmar most likely responsible for the aforementioned bridge section).
There's also one more song that wasn't at all written by the group, the listenable-but-generic pop-rock tune "Straight Line", written by Tony Beard. There's also a co-write from, of all people, REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin on "Haven't We Lost Enough?".
"Yours and Mine" and "Arrows" would have sounded right at home on Sting's debut solo album, and it's no wonder, because both of them feature Branford Marsalis adding his instantly recognizable soprano sax ornamentation. "Arrows" has a strikingly similar feel as the Sting song "Children's Crusade".
All that said, most listeners seem to feel the group had lost their edge at this point.
When you get right down to it though, the album mostly works. The title track, even if it is a bit strained lyrically, is undeniably catchy and energetic (the chorus, with its echo-y effect, amusingly recalls "Walking On The Moon" by the Police). Stills' "Tomboy" is fun and amusingly lightweight, despite the lyrical twist at the end. "Haven't We Lost Enough?" is an excellent, edgy lost-love number with just Stills on acoustic guitar and vocals and the others joining in on harmonies. "Yours And Mine", despite some distractingly unimaginative sax work from Marsalis, has a surging chorus and is a powerful statement about teens/pre-teens with a predisposition toward violence. Co-written by Nash, "(Got To Keep) Open" is Stills' token Latin-pop number, and it's an irresistible, uplifting feel-good tune. The downbeat "House Of Broken Dreams", with its simple-but-engaging acoustic riff, is a no-nonsense Nash ballad, haunting and extremely moving. The pensive "Arrows", written Crosby and the late Michael Hedges, is a beautifully melodic, flowing, 3/4 time adult contemporary ballad.
Unfortunately, the album ends in fairly weak fashion with the overwrought 'epic' "After The Dolphin" which, with its added soundbytes from news clips, presages Neil Young's "Let's Impeach The President".
Still though, the positives definitely outweight the negatives of "Live It Up". This is a highly recommended album, and with so many dirt cheap copies floating around, this CD should be considered a steal for CSN fans who don't already have it.
(P.S. Granted, the album cover, along with the back cover of the insert, is appalling--who the heck's idea was it to have hot dogs all over the place?? Ick!)
Their weakest album.......2007-04-03
This is Crosby, Stills, & Nash's weakest album. They venture too far into pop and not enough rock on this one. The most interesting song on it is "After The Dolphin" where Nash seems to try to remake the C&N classic "Last Whale". All-in-all, this is a very forgettable album. Recommended for hardcore CSN fans only.
A lost album.......2007-02-20
Not many folks give CSN much credit for this album. Lost hippie cred writing into the 90s? No mega-classics? Aging voices? Despite these issues, the album isn't really that bad. They carry their protest through the decade of greed, and the first two songs: Live it Up and If Anybody Had a Heart are both worthy of their prior panthenon of art.
Crosby Stills and Nash haven't produced a bad album..........2007-01-29
this one included. The reviews here are absurd. I gave this deserving album five stars to counter-balance all of the overly negative one-star reviews.
This is a good album--as least as good as "American Dream", "After the Storm" or "Looking Forward". There is some great material here--even the title track "Live It Up" which I love!
I'm not sure the reviewers here have gotten past the horrid cover, admittedly a mistake. The music is much better than the cover, believe me.
Frankly, the album was a big surprise for me. My expectations were low (thanks to that blasted cover!) so I was pleasantly surprised by the music.
The Worst Ever.......2006-04-24
What were Crosby, Stills, and Nash thinking? This is awful record. As another review has mentioned, they were only supposed to be releasing live discs and such at this time. It was 1990 and they released this barfbag of an album. It is made under the influence of drugs, alcohol, and constipation. Need I go on?

Customer Reviews:
The sound of beach music is sweeping the college kids away!.......1999-06-08
I have followed this band for many years in North Carolina and have shagged many a night away to these songs. If you haven't experienced beach music, this cd will get you hooked. I can't think of a good reason for a beach music lover or any music lover not to have this one on file for the beach, parties, or just to dance and have fun!!!!
This is some of the best beach music you could shag to!!.......1999-05-28
The band from North Carolina has the touch that a shag band needs to get your feet moving and to keep them moving. If you like beach music, you will love to put this cd on and just shag the night away. The band does a great job on the horns, which I feel is the best attribute to this dynamic sound.

This "Brown-eyed Girl" loves...........2004-06-28
the Isley Bros. and this was the first album I bought by them, first on cassette, then the album (after wearing out the cassette) and I'm just beside myself now that it has been re-issued on CD. It is one of my favorites...during the '70's, nobody brought the FUNK AND ROCK harder then the Isley's ("Live It Up," "Midnight Sky," "Need A Little Taste of Love")...and nobody brought the love and sensitivity either. Their version of "Hello It's Me" is a classic. The other mid-tempo/slow jams on the CD are just as hypnotic: "Lover's Eve," "Ain't I Been Good to You" and my
absolute favorite, "Brown-eyed Girl." This was a worthy follow-up to the classic "3+3" and a continuation of what the Isley's were to bring to the '70's...hard driving funk, with a little rock influence and beautiful love songs that provide lasting memories for you and the one you love. ANOTHER CLASSIC!
An overlooked masterpiece.......2004-06-03
LIVE IT UP was the followup to the Isley's breakthrough album 3+3. This time around, original songs bring the funk more to the forefront, while cover tunes are kept to a bare minimum. The title track and "Midnight Sky" were popular during the early years of disco, while the sole cover song, Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me" is still a staple on the Quiet Storm radio format. The bluesy "Ain't I Been Good To You" and the early-Doobie Brothers influenced "Need A Little Taste Of Love" tastefully highlight Ernie's wailing guitar solos, while "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Lover's Eve" display growth in their ability to write effective love ballads. Isley historians tend to overlook this album since it was released between two career-defining albums (1973's "3+3" and 1975's "The Heat Is On"). However, LIVE IT UP is still an important chapter in the musical evolution of the Isleys.
HOT!!!!!!!.......2004-04-02
For plain hot SWEATY funk The Isley's are second to NONE on
the title track of this album!Same goes for "Midnight Sky" and
the bluesy "Need A Little Taste Of Love".Ronnie Isley is a brilliant singer and I'll never tire of the 3+3 addition of this
band!A forgotton treasure to be sure and don't kid yourself-I had it THE MOMENT it came out!
classic Isley Brothers.......2004-03-28
I've Been a Fan of these Cats for so long&always Will."Brown Eyed girl" is tight as is the title cut.the classic 3+3 sound is a winning formula that never fails to get excitement from me.strong arrangements&Musicianship along with the Incredible vocals of Ronald Isley. must have.
Second Of The 3+3 Union.......2004-02-26
This is in my humble opinion THE best of the 3+3 union (I know how can I say that about any Isley Brothers joint) That sound that they smoothly rode through the 70'S on is fully matured right here. It's just loaded with beautiful hits check out LOVERS EVE and BROWN-EYED GIRL then you'll see what I mean. The WHOLE joint is just TIGHT absolutly NO weak songs here. I don't know maybe it holds a sentimental value because of where I was in my life at that time but BUY IT and see for yourself how high it ranks on Isley Brothers scale.

Those who believe that telepathy does not exist should check out this record. This trio--consisting of pianist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock--has been perfecting the science of syncopated thought for two decades. Recorded in the South of France, it has all of the elements of the group's celebrated studio recordings. Jarrett's elegiac and encyclopedic pianisms, Peacock's intelligent basslines, and DeJohnette's intricate and inspired drumwork turn time-worn standard's such as "If I Were a Bell" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" into intense and intimate sound portraits. Bill Evans' famous trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian may have set the mold, but Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette have broke it in their own sweet, swinging, and soulful way. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Nice musician.......2007-01-12
Keith Jarrett is very famous in Japan too.
He always says something to himself when playing piano.
It is very strange, lol.
Unexpectedly Bored and Disappointed.......2005-04-21
In reading over the couple of reviews that felt there was "something missing" and the longer, more detailed one that bemoaned the lack of a former novel and caring approach to the uniqueness of each song that the trio has displayed for so long, I had my own disappointment validated. I cannot say that I've sat down and done a "studied" listen to "Up For It" but I usually find myself grabbed by Jarrett's interpretation of a melody even before the improvisation begins and to my surprise (especially in light of Jarrett's stated pride and surprise in this work) I too felt these renditions to be lackluster in arrangement and execution. I also miss the introductions and the pacing of the improvisations - Jarrett just seems to toss off the head and dive into the improvised choruses which have little variety or range (maybe "My Funny Valentine" is an exception but it hardly compares with his earlier versions). I would not however agree that the trio has gone downhill since Tokyo '96 (though the magic was not as strong to me there as well)- my attention was seized and I was delighted when I heard some of the tracks on the radio from "The Out of Towners"- particularly the bop tunes that often leave me wanting on the better recordings. "Up for It" left me wondering why I was suddenly bored by the trio...Interesting that others see it as a kind of pinnacle achievement...
THE GIRLS IN FRANCE WEAR PAPER UNDERPANTS.......2004-12-15
This is another outstanding release in a series of Keith Jarrett's "standards" trio. I try to expand my horizons by listening to Jarrett and company's "free-form" improvisations with released such as ALWAYS LET ME GO and INSIDE OUT . But for the simultaneous pleasure of immediate enjoyment and interesting challenge, I turn to the "standards" recordings. For me jazz has a particular power in taking a well-known popular song and playing with it several different and individual days.
This CD is of particular interest in that the conditions of this "live" performance were less than ideal and came close to being not made at all. The open-air concert arena was in fact drenched in rain and there was little prospect that the weather would clear. Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette are all advancing in age and all were recovering from poor health. Playing in bad weather is not something you can "get over" with a bowl of warm soup and a good night's sleep anymore. (Believe me. I know. When I was little my grandparents took added care with their ailments. I thought it is just b.s. "Just sit down for a few minutes. Drink some water and you'll be better'. I thought. Well, now I know a misstep in taking care of yourself can result in weeks of grief.). In the interests of their own health, each was tempted to cancel the concert. But at the last moment they decided they just wanted to play. Workmen "tented" the stage with plastic sheets and the trio went on to perform.
What we are left with is a wonderful and inventive concert recording I have played several times and still have not put away. It does strike me that at times Jarrett pounds the keys extra hard (he is not reputed to have a "light" touch to begin with). My immediate impression is that Jarrett is taking out some irritation with the wind and blasts of moisture on the piano-but that's just guessing. I get no such impression with Peacock and DeJohnette and in fact both are playing above their already high average. As simple minded as it may sound, the highlights of this set are the old chestnuts of "My Funny Valentine" and "Autumn Leaves". It continually amazes me how this trio can take these "old rags" and make something new out of them.
Like another reviewer, I suspect when this trio is no more we will look back on them as a kind of "golden age" in jazz we were too foolish not to recognize at the time. This CD is one to get.
Best CD in the world?.......2004-01-12
I first discovered Keith Jarrett on this cd, and since then I have wanted to hear more and more of his music, both his solo work, but certainly also his work with the Standards Trio. Although I have only heard some (around 7) albums with him, I have a somewhat good knowledge about his music. First he joined the Messengers, later the Charles Lloyd quartet; then he played with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian. After that with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, and later with the European Quartet consisting of Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson, and Jon Christensen. Within these periods, he experimented (sometimes succesfully, other times maybe not so succesfully) with solo playing. The first of these were, as far as I know, Restoration Ruin, where he played all instruments backed up by a string quartet. His first solo concert was Facing You, a succesful album, which later was followed by the famous Köln Concert.
Also later in his work has he followed his own ways about which music he should play. And here's now Up For It, an album which could be seen as "just another one" with the Standards Trio. Listening to it for the - I don't know, maybe fiftieth time - I conclude that it's not just another one. It's so close to perfection as anything could be. The three of them all have the right amount of space, Jarrett leads with his fast, humoures, and intelligent notes; Gary Peacock plays with elegant harmony; and Jack DeJohnette drums with a incredible imagination.
In the liner notes, Jarrett writes: "What ended up on the recording represents, to me, he triumph of desire over circumstance, the triumph of youthful exuberance over age, and our need for music and wisdom. There was a fluidity of ideas and a rhytmic commitment to the groove that went on for the entire concert, despite the oods agains it. Since this music was an unwitting gift from the sun to us, I pass it on - a little, flawed gem of sweet swinging in the rain - from the three of us to you, our faithful listeners for more than 20 years. When we were on stage in the middle of the music, nothing else mattered. We were home." It can't be said better. And I think it's the best album on this earth, but decide for yourself.

Like always with the Jarret trio, great players, great sound, outstanding jazz

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26
This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!
