All I can say is I spent around $20 on this one. I could have bought 2 differentOP CDs from amazon and should have done so. Don't expect great sound quality---you practically cannot tell RB is even on the gig. I guess its for the hardcore completists. Completely unenjoyable and I am a huge ray brown and OP fan. Find one of their finer works. Unfortunately 1 star is the lowest, I wouldnt even give it a half.

5 out of 5 stars 17 year old soulstar!!!.......2005-12-31

James Brown is a great fan of Litttle Willie John and he used to be his friend until he died at age 30 in 1968. When Little Willie John became famous James Brown was his opening act.
He is not very well known nowadays but you only have to listen to his voice to realize that he is of the same level as Sam Cooke,Jackie Wilson and Otis Redding.
This CD has a good sound quality and contains his early hits, which are more 'rough' than his later work. For me this is pure soul! It is unbelievable that he is just 17 to 19 years old at these recordings.

Album Description

'Lipstick Killers' was originally recorded in 1972 and features the original line-up of the New York Dolls, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur 'Killer' Kane and Billy Murcia. The band was only 4 and 1/2 months old, and just beginning to build it's legendary reputation. This first session captures them raw, wild, and crude, with no studio trickery to tone them down. 9 tracks including 'Bad Girl', 'Personality Crisis', 'Don't Start Me Talking' and more on 2000 Roir release.

4 out of 5 stars New York Dolls - 'Lipstick Killers' (Roir).......2004-06-16

For a bunch of demos, this collection of the Doll's tracks, assembled by the indie label Roir, sure does sound good.'Lipstick Killers' is apparently the EARLIEST known recordings of the band, recorded in the summer of 1972.Even the group's ORIGINAL drummer Billy Murcia is on here. The tunes that I found myself looking forward to on repeated plays of the CD are "Looking For A Kiss","Don't Mess With Cupid","Personality Crisis" and "Frankenstein".Might want to keep in mind that 'Lipstick...' is pretty much aimed at New York Dolls completists.

4 out of 5 stars Early Dolls.......2004-04-19

These early demos featuring original drummer Billy Murcia are pretty crude all around. The Dolls sound a bit sluggish and unsure of themselves. This is understandable, of course, considering they had only been together for about four months. The sound quality isn't too bad. But, unfortunately, the tapes suffer from volume fluctuations that can be somewhat annoying.

Many tunes that would eventually appear on their two studio albums are included here in embrionic form. I wouldn't say that any of the tracks on "Lipstick Killers" are superior to those on "NY Dolls" and "Too Much Too Soon". However, it is cool to hear them in such a raw, unpolished state. I prefer the '73 demos with Jerry Nolan, but this is still a fine album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dolls recordings from Summer '72.......2002-03-25

Not as in the editorial reviews January, this one was done in the summer of '72 at Blue Rock Studios in NYC. It captures all the energy of the Dolls at their peak when they were the darlings of the Mercer Arts Center Glitter Rock Scene.

Well here we have, the result of banjoist Derroll Adams and Elliot's various performances the east of Atlantic thru the decade of the 50's. Not that bad I must say, we have "worried man blues" the cult favourite of generations , a not so tight rendition here. And then we have the list following with Dylan's mentor Guthrie's "More Pretty Girls"...and many other folk favourites... I think the album though should have read 'Derroll And Elliot' (no offence to the master!).. for the sheer brilliance of Adams' playing.

4 out of 5 stars EXC Reissue of Three LPs, Worth Three Times This Price .......2006-10-10

So far I have just a few of Spain's Fresh Sound CDs, but every one's a winner with original cover art and audio. (By the way, there's a new kid on the Spanish scene, Gambit Records, and their 2-LP CD reissue of Art Farmer's ART and PERCEPTION albums is as meticulously original as any Japanese CD; budget priced, too.) Back in the '70s I bought the Trip LP reissue of INTRODUCING JOE GORDON (which also included the second album heard on this CD, THE JAZZ SCHOOL). As some of you might recall, though we were excited to have those Trips, Trip's mastering was fair at best. But with Trip you'd get a good idea of how the original sounded, mainly because Trip never added simulated stereo. Based on a listening comparison to the Trip LP, I report to you there's no fake stereo or reverb added to these 1954 sessions.

I'm a stickler for original cover art. I really don't mind that Fresh Sound didn't exactly use the original EmArcy cover, a crop of Joe in the studio. However--and perhaps for the better--Fresh Sound used the full, uncropped session photo from which the crop was taken (wish they wouldn't have tinted it, though). And there are additional black & white session photos in the booklet, but no reproduction of the THE JAZZ SCHOOL cover. The third session, BLAKEY, is a tremendous bonus, eventhough the booklet has no reproduction of that album's cover art. I wanted so much to give this CD five stars, but the absence of these two covers makes this issue incomplete.

BLAKEY is a session I had never heard, and it features Joe with Gigi Gryce playing some fresh sounding tunes, along with a few tunes Gigi recorded with Joe's contemporary, Clifford Brown, just a year or so prior. And if that isn't enough, they also do Horace Silver's "Mayreh," one of the tunes Clifford fans will recognize from Art Blakey's A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND, which was recorded just three months earlier.

In 1963, Joe passed on, a victim of smoking in bed, just after recording some great LPs, like LOOKIN' GOOD, for Contemporary. By that time, his playing was reflecting his interest in players like Miles. He was a work in progress. He's also on Harold Land's West Coast Blues OJC CD, as well as many of Shelly Manne's live dates, also on OJC. And check him out on the Charlie Mariano OJC CDs, too (there were some monster cats in Boston, I'll tell ya). All those dates are great, indeed. But there's something about the feel of these EmArcy dates that make them my favorite Joe.

5 out of 5 stars Solid R&B Album for Any Collection.......2000-11-28

The story goes like this. Before he was Dr. John the Night Tripper he was Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. - a Third Ward kid growing up in the rich musical climate of New Orleans. His life revolved around music from the beginning: he had several aunts and uncles who played boogie woogie piano at home, and his father owned a record store, serviced juke boxes and repaired sound systems in local clubs. Young Mac loved to accompany his father on these calls -- he would sit outside and absorb the R&B music for hours. At the age of seven he started guitar lessons from Fats Domino's guitarist, and there was no turning back. When Mac was a teenager he picked up some session work at Cosimo Matassa's studio, dropped out of high school and in 1957 joined the Ace staff full time as a producer, songwriter and musician. These Ace years were ITALICS Medical School END ITALICS for the gris-gris doctor, where he honed his songwriting skills and learned how to make records. Rebennack had a hand in each of the 18 cuts presented here, whether as songwriter, musician or producer. His vocals are discernible on one track only, "Row Row My Boat" - but it is a very cool track, indeed. They are all cool - who can't dig the New Orleans funkified R&B? I have to agree with the man at Louie's Juke Joint on Decatur Steet who recommended this album to me: "It is essential." Highlights: Rebennack's Bo Diddley rhythm on "Storm Warning," Chuck Carbo's smooth vocals on "You Don't Leave Me No Choice," The End's "It Ain't No Use," "Bad Neighborhood" by Ronnie & The Delinquents, "Morgus the Magnificent" by Morgus & the Three Ghouls (only in New Orleans!), "Down the Road" by Roland Stone.

          Album Description

2 CD set. Recorded at Joe Meek's Holloway Road studio, each 15 minute radio show featured a variety of classic Fury material (the ubiquitous 'Halfway To Paradise', 'Maybe Tomorrow'), alongside R&R standards ('Sweet Little Sixteen', 'Money Honey'), contemporary R&B numbers ('Unchain My Heart', 'Leave My Woman Alone') and a weekly Country spot ('You Win Again', 'Just Because'). Drawn from these historical broadcasts, The Sound Of Fury Luxembourg Sessions presents hitherto unissued rarities, many tracks were never commercially recorded by the artist, and, by way of a bonus, a selection of instrumentals performed by The Tornados. Disc 2 features Fury's original demo recordings for the groundbreaking Sound Of Fury LP, plus a half-dozen acetates he'd recorded earlier as a young Ronnie Wycherley. Castle Music. 2005.
