Album Description
First time collection on CD! This Jane Froman package features the 1952 Broadway Revival of "Pal Joey" (where Jane provided the lead vocals for Vivienne Segal) along with the original soundtrack to "With Song in My Heart" - the 1952 film starring Susan Hayward in the life story of Jane Forman (Jane provided vocals for the film). The classic Rodgers & Hart "Pal Joey" album also features a standout performance from a young Elaine Stritch singing her showstopper "Zip." Digitally Remastered.
Customer Reviews:
with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31
I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.
With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19
I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.
A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16
This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART
Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.
PAL JOEY
Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.
In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.
"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30
While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."
another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21
Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".
The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.
Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.
The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.
The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".
A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

Amazon.com essential recording
At 14, child prodigy Alison Krauss signed to Rounder records, wooing critics and beguiling both bluegrass and country stalwarts with her nimble-fingered champion fiddling and inimitable otherworldly soprano. Though 1995's Now That I've Found You is credited as her mainstream breakthrough, 1990's I've Got That Old Feeling bridges her remarkable career into adulthood, capturing the public's interest in bluegrass. Barely past the threshold of womanhood, Krauss possesses musical agility far beyond her years, as well as the soft sweetness of the girlhood blush. The efficacy with which she and her band approach each song is marrow deep and tenderly precise, be it on the banjo rave-up "Will You Be Leaving" or the multi-string delay-beat of "Winter of a Broken Heart." Witness to the promise of a stellar future is the Floyd Cramer-esque piano-led "Tonight I'll Be Lonely Too," in which Krauss shines like the sun, her splendidly emotive tone and phrasing somewhat reminiscent of a young Dolly Parton. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Best of the early years.......2006-07-12
If you just stumbled across this album and gave it a listen, you might be forgiven for thinking that it's a greatest hits CD. At this point, AK already had a couple of albums under her belt, and it shows. The music is straight bluegrass and country, you won't find any of the later pop infusions (which is fine music itself!), and the song selection is first rate. The instrumentalists are in fine form, and her voice still has most of that thin, reedy quality that you associate with bluegrass. But if you listen, it's just beginning to warm up some and lose that young-girl quality ...
So if you're already an AKUS fan, you can scoop this one up and enjoy every lick! And if not, this is as good a place as any to test the waters.
Bluegrass Queen Alison Krauss Reigns on this Recording.......2004-06-26
On her 3rd CD Alison Krauss does not break stride. "I've Got That Old Feeling" is chock-a-block FULL of the beautiful ballads that have made her famous with her angelically emotive voice, but it is also perhaps the best showcase for her ability to perform more up-tempo pieces, such as "Dark Skies" and "Will You Be Leaving?" The supporting cast here performs perfectly.
How many albums do you have that have perhaps a few good songs on it, but just as many songs that are just filler - instantly forgettable and barely listenable? This is a CD with NO filler. Every cut is a "keeper" and I could just listen to the whole thing back to back over and over again.
Alison Krauss is a national treasure, and this recording is one reason why.
Brilliant early album full of great songs.......2003-12-15
Alison Krauss has done much to popularise bluegrass in recent years. Her early recordings were pure bluegrass - this (from 1990) might just be the best album of that phase of her career, although they are all brilliant and it's hard to choose a particular favorite. Her more recent albums have included other influences but I enjoy those too, in a different way.
There are no really famous songs on this album, but the quality of all the songs is high. Sidney Cox (of the Cox family, a noted bluegrass group with which Alison recorded a gospel album) wrote four songs including the title track (a bright, upbeat song) and Tonight I'll be lonely too (an outstanding ballad). Other favorites of mine include Steel rails (a brilliant train song), Endless highway, Will you be leaving and One good reason, but there are so many great songs here and it may be that your favorite is one I haven't mentioned. The overall feel of the album is bright and upbeat.
If you are unfamiliar with Alison's early music, I recommend that you buy Now that I've found you - A collection, which I've already reviewed. That includes one track from each of her early albums, plus tracks not available on any of her other albums so far. If you have that collection and you are looking for more of Alison's early music, you will enjoy this.
Forever a Classic.......2003-02-27
Alison Krauss is by far my favorite artist. Getting this CD has been a treat. She brings such flavor to bluegrass like no other artist. Not only is her voice that brings spirit, but her violin playing has emotions and feeling. Alison and Union Station's mixtures of songs such as ballads and up beat toe tapping Blue grass shows the range of talent this lady and group has. I hope they continue to produce this special music. I just have one more CD to buy and I have all her CD...which are getting quite worn.
Not my cup of tea.......2003-01-21
This CD is okay, but lacking the depth I tend to enjoy. Something about the songs is a little too sing-songy and Allison's voice actually grates on me if I'm in the wrong mood. I thought I'd try her out, but she's just not my cup of tea. For the record, I bought Dolly Parton's Little Sparrow at about the same time, and I'm enjoying that immensely.

Album Description
From the moment she lit up the screen as a child, people knew Judy Garland was a star. After "The Wizard Of Oz" she was an American Icon. Her tragic tale of stardom and personal struggle is well known, as is her enormous talent. The ballads on this unique collection come from her short-lived television series, which featured incredible performances that have been only rarely heard since.
Customer Reviews:
Judy Garland sold her songs without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!.......2007-07-17
Judy Garland will always remain the world's greatest entertainer. She could sing, act and dance far better than any of them; and this CD provides us with a wonderful track set of just a few of the ballads she sang on her critically acclaimed television series on CBS. Judy fans will be delighted with this album; and anyone who doubts Judy's ability to interpret a song in her own singularly beautiful way will be confident that she was the best after they listen to this album.
The track set begins auspiciously with "Once In A Lifetime." Judy sings this with great panache and all her heart. Judy's excellent diction and the musical arrangement bolster this number. Wow! You truly get the feeling that she really is singing of her brand new world. "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" changes the mood to one of melancholy; and judging by the audience reaction Judy really sold this song. Judy performs this number as only a consummate entertainer ever could; and I predict you will enjoy "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" very, very much.
"Ol' Man River" was a number Judy enjoyed singing; and she delivers "Ol' Man River" with such heart and soul that Paul Robeson would have been green with envy! The musical arrangement makes great use of the strings and horns; but Judy's vocals remain squarely in the spotlight. Excellent!
"What'll I Do" again proves only Judy could bat this one straight out of the ballpark! Judy infuses this number with all the melancholy emotion she ever could while keeping her performance strong, neat and clean. The piano accompaniment in the background works well for "What'll I Do." "That Old Feeling" comes from the past but in Judy's capable hands it sounds new and fresh; you'll swear you never heard this ballad before as Judy massages the lyrics to make this song fresh--and her own, too. Love those strings in the musical arrangement, too! "By Myself" boasts a wonderful strings arrangement and Judy sings this straight from her heart. Judy's interpretation makes "By Myself" THE definitive rendition of "By Myself."
Another treat on this CD is a beautiful but all too brief duet between Judy and Tony Bennett; together they sing "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." You can tell Tony and Judy ARE in love--with their music. You also get the famous duet Judy did with Barbra Streisand as they deliver a medley of "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again." This is a rare treat because these two artists rarely worked together. Magnificent!
The CD track set ends with one of Judy's very favorite songs entitled "Through The Years." Judy begins with a touching spoken introduction about people being nicer to each other; and when she begins to sing "Through The Years" she positively takes flight! Judy's strong performance of "Through The Years" gives us a solid ending for this album. It'll leave you wanting more, too!
The liner notes include an informative essay by John Fricke. You also get the song credits and recording dates. Great! The artwork reflects good judgment; the stunning photos of Judy enhance the quality of the artwork greatly.
Judy was easily one in a trillion; and I highly doubt we'll ever see another one quite like her. Judy Garland could take a song and massage it to new heights of beauty with her singular and ingenious talent. It is a fitting tribute to Judy that her CDs and DVDs still sell very well despite the passage of time--you could never keep this great artist down.
I highly recommend this CD for Judy's fans; and anyone who enjoys classic pop vocals will cherish this CD for years to come. If you are new to Judy Garland and want to experience her singing talent this CD would be a great place to start.
Enjoy! God Bless You, Judy! We miss you!!!
Great Ballads from the one and only lady on the stage.......2007-05-20
Judy Garland has the deepest most emotional way of singing ballads. This CD has beautiful songs. Judy's signature was a style, she created it and that's why noone else can do what she did ever again. She has a way of making songs come to life. I highly recommend this CD. The Last Dance is my ultimate favorite song.
A Great CD of Ballads.......2007-01-04
If you are in need of learning how to sing a ballad the correct way; please purchase this CD. Judy Garland knows how to get a ballad sung correctly. She is one of my favorite ballad singers.
POOR SOUND HURTS JUDY AND HER PALS.......2006-03-28
Here's proof that what sounds like a great idea on paper can flop when transferred to compact disc. The tunes on these recordings have been culled from Liza's mom's '60s small-screen variety series, but the less-than-stellar sound quality hurts, making them more grating than gracious. The rambling bits of dialogue feel hollow and disconnected when heard out of context; those wanting to hear Judy sing these songs should watch her as well. Geneon Entertainment will take die-hard devotees over the rainbow --- they have released Judy's entire ill-fated series on DVD, proving you can go home again. And again. And again.
Great, not the usual stuff, release.......2005-09-30
This CD, culled from performances of Judy's TV show (1963/64) is an excellent way of getting Garland recordings of songs not normally associated with her. The weekly grind of creating 48 minutes of TV over 26 episodes gave Judy the chance to perform many songs that were new to her repertoire at that time. It's great that they're pulling those performances out and creating CD's from that time period.
Her highs and lows are well documented and the series wasn't without its troubles, but this was Judy's last sustained effort at a regular gig and she didn't disappoint. Hindsight suggests she might have done better in a series of specials rather than weekly TV, but who knows?
This has a lot of great performances and the imperfection of pulling audio from the TV masters should be overlooked by all who are interested in hearing Judy give these songs a spin. John Fricke and company do a great job, as always.

Let Brook Carry You Off To Dreamland.......2004-07-17
Brook Benton is one of the best interpreters of romantic ballads that I have ever heard. These two albums, recorded in the mid sixties for RCA Victor, more than justifies that assertion. For the first album, "My Country," Brook sings twelve country love songs with pop orchestrations and arrangements by Anita Kerr. You will be amazed at how different they sound from their original versions. His heartfelt rendition of "Have I Told You Lately that I Love You" is just remarkable. The second album, "That Old Feeling," is even better and, most likely, my favorite album of his. Brook croons a dozen pop standards backed by the lush sound of a string orchestra conducted by Glenn Osser. His rich, seductive baritone caresses every song, converting every one into a classic of its own. "That Old Feeling," "Blue Moon," "My Darling, My Darling," every track is flawless. The set closes with his warm, incomparable rendition of "Moon River" which, for me, is the definitive version of the Henry Mancini classic. So, put out the lights, close your eyes, and be swept away by the beautiful voice of Brook Benton.

Customer Reviews:
Impeccable program and performances, but too uniform in approach.......2007-07-02
So why only a 4-star review? Cleo's vocal performances and the arrangements are first rate, if restrained, and there's a lack of variety in tempo from song to song. The uniformity lends itself to a lackluster quality overall. I still like the recording, but it is far from my favorite Cleo Laine disc.
The songs are the classic standards that are the hallmarks of American popular music. Out of the 18 songs, there are seven that I think are exceptional as performed here: "I've Got a Crush on You," "Imagination," "I Didn't Know About You," "Alfie," "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," "Embraceable You," and "My Funny Valentine."
luscious music.............2007-05-02
When you think of female jazz vocalists, what names come to mind? Often, you hear Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Well, add another name to the list--Cleo Laine. This beautiful, British songbird is phenomenally talented and I am surprised that we haven't heard more of her, and that her name isn't more well-recognized. Her lower register is flawless, sexy and carries the grace and the depth of the songs, featured here, with minimal accompaniment (just subtle chords from her pianist). Some of the best songs (in my opinion) include "That Old Feeling" and "Ain't Misbehavin'". The rest of the songs don't fail to disappoint either! Just beautiful.
Just gorgeous!!!.......2001-09-15
All Cleo Laine needed for these wonderful songs were her voice and Laurie Holloway's sensitive piano/string bass backgrounds. This is music to relax by!!!
"Bedroom Music not Yard Music".......2001-05-19
Did you ever hear a piano make love to a singer's voice? This is what you'll hear when you hear this one. Here you have this sexy, breathless voice and this tinkling piano, just giving you tune after tune of heart grabbing music. It's definitely "night music". It's WOW! Just WOW!
Memories Recalled.......2001-03-21
If you have ever sat alone in the darkened corner of a cocktail lounge day dreaming about a warm romantic interlude with the beautiful young lady sitting at the piano, this album will take you back to that memory and the warmth of that innocent affair. Memories recalled are a precious gift.

Customer Reviews:
Do you remember Shep Fields and his Rippling Rhythm? .......2007-03-20
I remember Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm. I never thought his was a great band but more of a nvelty band along with the "rippling rhythm effect". I never realized that he appeared in several movies during the late '30's as explained in the description brochure. I remember that in the early '40's he changed his music to a more up dated style: nearly all reeds. This is confirmed with several pieces in the CD as his "Shep Fields and His New Music". If you enjoy nostalgia you will enjoy Shep Fields and "That Old Feeling" CD and Vol 2 of his recordings.
