Amazon.com essential recording

This might have been the album Tribe Called Quest wanted to make from the very beginning. It's their most even, consistent album of the original trilogy that also includes People's Instinctive Travels... and The Low End Theory. But in spite of this, or maybe because of it, it's also their most uninteresting. With so many competent tracks, there's no chance for something to stand out above the pack, like "Scenario" did on Low End Theory or "Can I Kick It" did on People's Instinctive Travels. The celebration is there ("Stir It Up"), the jazz drums kick ("Oh My God"), and the stand-up bass dribbles, keeping perfect pace with Q-Tip's unmistakable mic-touch ("Electric Relaxation"). There's even a Native Tongues armistice/reunion with De La Soul ("Awards Tour"). Although it comes together like a seamless tutorial in jazz hip-hop style, it comes together so damn well that it's hard for any one track to excel, cursing the album with consistent quality. --Todd Levin

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hip Hop.......2007-03-29

I have owned this CD several times in the past 15 years. I have had tapes that have broken and cd's that have scratched and I will continue to purchase and keep this in my repetoire of music because the beats and sentiments are just as valid today as they were in the 90's. You can't go wrong by owning this CD in all of its forms.

5 out of 5 stars I am a Midnight Marauder- Top 5 Favorite albums of all-times!!!.......2006-08-11

This was an album that I went thru multiple packs of batteries to keep it playing in my walkman back in '93-94 time. I can honestly say that every track on this album has its own presence that at some point of time- made me love each and every song. The chemistry with ATCQ was unmatched at that time and can never be overlooked. My top picks from this classic are: "Electric Relaxation", "Oh My God", "8 Million Stories", "God Lives Through", "Keep It Rollin'" and "Lyrics To Go". This is ATCQ's best work to me out of their 5 album releases. Buy it now!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best "Jazz Hip hop" money can buy........2006-08-05

A tribe Called Quest's 2nd 1992 release Midnight Marauders is what I would consider a very well rounded excursion into the world of Alternative Hip Hop. Some of song's have a serious nature to them such as "8 Million Stories" , in which Q-Tip tells multiple stories about how life as a whole can be hard, just on normal people, and his execution over the slurring Jazzy beat is classic Tip. Another song with more serious subject matter would be "Sucka Nigga" in which The N-Word is discussed, and, the social consequences, and history of the N-Word is also discussed. Q-Tip explains that as much as he hates using the word, he cant help but sometimes say it, because it is so prevalent, and used so often in modern African American culture. He also expresses disgust for the fact that respectable Black men now use the same word with little, or no thought that racist white slave masters used to use in the South. He also disses phony rappers, or "Sucka Niggas" in this song. The thing though about this song, and all of the "Political Thrillers" if you will on this album are all delivered over beautiful Jazzy light hearted instrumentals, which as weird as this may sound, it fits perfectly.
Tan there is more light hearted song's like "Oh My God" , or "Electric Relaxation" which is basically about having sex with fine women. Even though the subject matter is tired, and constantly used, the delivery of this song by Tip, and Phife who exchange short verses is exquisite, and they as always fit the beat perfectly, and mesh together. The lyric's are also nice, and refreshing.
Another cool thing about this album is that there is many weird, and not expected instrumental bridges in the beats that are unexpected, but cool. The first one comes in "Steve Biko (Stir it Up)" in which there is this out of this world sounding highly spacey hook, which sounds like someone is singing at the top of there lungs in a massive room by themselves, and then after that is a 20 second long bridge in which Tip deliver's quickly said lines to no beat, but DJ Scratching, but it is so well mixed and delivered you can't help but love it and nod your head.
Overall this album is a nice refreshing, and creative break from Rap, into the world of Jazzy Hip Hop, and no one has done it as well before or after as Tribe did.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Say Nine Trey 'Cause This Is For Eternity.......2006-07-28

And that's exactly what 'Midnight Marauders' is...an album for eternity! Hundreds of years from now, this album will still resonate through the ears of its listeners. How many groups do you know (especially hip hop) can make back to back to back classic records in a span of three - four years? As a matter of fact, how many records do you know where you can play the whole thing without reachin' for the skip button? The Tribe just had a way of connecting with their fanbase and they continued to uplift their legacy with their greatest offering yet.

Once again, Phife and Tip are a two headed monster tearin' the frame out of some smooth like butter beats that will keep heads bouncin'. What makes A Tribe Called Quest's third record one of my all-time personal favorites are all the little things that real rap listeners notice. Maybe it's the xylaphones sprinkled in on "Award Tour", Ali Shaheed Muhammods masterfully cut sample of Rakim on "We Can Get Down", or Q-Tips descriptive tale of New York nightlife on "Midnight". Whatever the reason, the beats and rhymes effortlessly go hand in hand. Hell, Phife is so confident in his mic skills that he boasts, "I'm Jordan with the mic/ Wanna gamble"?

You may never hear such a cohesive album like 'Midnight Marauders' again. Even the computerized voice drops knowledge, bridging the gaps between songs. The subject matter was diversified to keep people on their toes. Q-Tip educates on the controversial usage of the N-word with quips such as, "You know the word dummy/ other people in the community think its crummy/ But I don't, 'cause the youth we em-brace adversity it goes right with the race/...and bein' that we use it as a term of endearment/". Phife tells his version of freaky tales on the hypnotic "8 Million Stories". Large Professor (the only outsider on the production tip) produced one beat which amazingly fit perfectly with the tribe vibe on "Keep It Rollin'". Who could forget that chant of "yeah, yeah now check the method"? In spite of the superb quality of songwriting and musicality, the unquestionable standout is "Electric Relaxation". The song is a crowning achievement of hip hop in its purest form. Ali hooks up a beat for the hip hop hall of fame as Tip and Phife give a monumental performance.

In conclusion, 'Midnight Marauders' was a masterpiece from the brilliant sequencing to the who' who in hip hop album cover. There were actually three album covers of different rap stars in the background with the black cover being the rarest. You have to wonder if ATCQ was mocking the inside of the cover, standing by the clock because of the timelessness of their music they put out. They even teased their listeners by bringing the computerized voice in, after "The Chase" saying it concludes the program when there was still two incredible songs to follow. Whatever the case, never say the year 'cause this one is for eternity!

5 out of 5 stars A.T.C.Q.'s finest production of ever.......2006-06-09

I love jazzy hip-hop of the early '90s and if you do too, this is the album you must listen to! all the songs are wonderful but there are some of these which are something of supernatural like the famous (and the most beautiful of the entire cd!) "Award Tour", "Steve Birko(stir it up)" and "Midnight".
enjoy this pearl of REAL hip-hop!!!!

I really enjoyed this cd!! Especially Maria, Maria by Carlos Santana that song brought back so many memories it was a real joy to listen to. The other songs on this cd make for great listening pleasure. I would definitely recommend this cd to others.

4 out of 5 stars (3.5 Stars) Decent Compilation Of R&B Hits.......2007-02-09

R&B compilations can be a great way to get a collection of great songs that you have grown to love. Whether it be a bunch of slow jams, chart-toppers, or one-hit wonders, there's almost always a reason to get a music compilation these days. Sometimes the song you want is on an album that is out of print. Other times you have old tapes or records that have reached the end of their usefulness and you don't necessarily want to buy the whole album all over again. So buying a compilation saves you from missing out on all your favorite music you would otherwise have to live without. The Body and Soul series has been one of those standout collections that people can instantly rely on. The latest offering is Midnight Fire, a collection of hit R&B songs from the 90s and early 2000s. Standout songs like D'angelo's "Untitled (How Does It Feel?)," Jill Scott's "A Long Walk," "You Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys, "Why You Wanna Act Like That" by Tyrese, and Jon B's "R U Still Down" bless this collection. You are also treated to some classic gems from Dru Hill ("These Are The Times" and Sisqo's "Incomplete"), Ginuwine ("So Anxious"), R. Kelly ("When A Woman's Fed Up" and "Be Careful" with Sparkle), and Jagged Edge ("Promise"). There are a few songs like Toni Braxton's "Spanish Guitar," Donell Jones' "You Know What's Up," or Santana's "Maria, Maria" that don't blend well with the rest and shouldn't have made the cut to begin with. This collection probably doesn't have the strength of previous Body And Soul collections. But all in all, Midnight Fire is worth checking out for that pure, nostalgic feeling you get when listening to good, contemporary R&B music.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Let's Make This Precious.......2007-04-16

If you know Dexy's Midnight Runners, it's probably from their 1982 smash "Come On Eileen". And why not? It's brilliant, a perfectly incandescent gem of a song simply bursting at the seams with new wave rock n' roll energy, Celtic conviviality, and blue-eyed soul fervour. That pretty much describes the album from which that one-hit-wonder was drawn, TOO-RYE-AY.

What is the most identifiable element of Dexy's Midnight Runners' sound? Is it the Stax-like horns that bolster these cuts with their taut R&B charts? Is it the Irish gypsy fiddle of Steve Brennan and Helen O'Hara? How about Billy Adams' sprightly banjo? Their bedraggled, dungareed street image is certainly distinctive as hell. Or it could very possibly be bandleader and songwriter Kevin Rowland's off-kilter vocals that sound like the common ground between Ric Ocasek, Joe Strummer, and Van Morrison (wherever that may be).

Speaking of Van Morrison, Dexy's fusion of rock, soul, and Irish folk certainly owes much to the Man's work - they cover his "Jackie Wilson Said" on TOO-RYE-AY as a matter of fact. But especially toward the end of the album as the songs start to get longer and blend into one another, that same indefinable, searching quality emerges in Rowland's songwriting as he emulates Van's incantory talk-singing. This is especially evident in the album's shortest ("I'll Show You") and longest ("Until I Believe in My Soul") songs, the latter of which is probably the best song on the album this side of "Come On Eileen". Combined with the prominent fiddle alongside the R&B elements TOO-RYE-AY actually reminds me of Morrison's INTO THE MUSIC, and that's compliment, since INTO THE MUSIC happens to be one of my favourite albums ever. But that's not to say that Dexy's Midnight Runners are derivative. They have a sound all their own, and make no mistake - you'd never mistake a song like "The Celtic Soul Brothers" or "Plan B" for anything but Dexy's.

Evidently, Dexy's Midnight Runners only have two other albums: SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS and DON'T STAND ME DOWN. And if they're anywhere near as good as TOO-RYE-AY (and everything I've heard, in terms of reviews and listening both, has been indicative of the affirmative) I'll be going after them in the not-too-distant future.

4 out of 5 stars Great Record - but stop arguing about ska!.......2007-02-08

In the U.S., Dexy's Midnight Runners were a one hit wonder of the first order, but in the UK, they charted hit after hit after hit in the early 80's. Pick up this album, or better yet, pick up "Let's Make This Precious," and you'll see why. You won't regret it.

But please, let's not get into an argument about who "invented" ska here. To claim that either DMR or the Clash invented ska is absurd. Ska - like reggae, its cousin, a Caribbean/American form of popular music characterized by its hybridization of U.S. American R&B with an Afrocentric rhythmic sensibility - was huuuuge among British youth in the 60's and 70's, and found a niche audience in the burgeoning punk scene in London. Bands like the Clash (and hundreds of others) anglicized ska/reggae, creating from it their own "rebel music," but it was also swiftly aestheticized and adopted/assimilated by any number of punk subcultures, including, ironically, an often-sinister brand of racist skinhead. But whatever.

4 out of 5 stars not your typical 80's techno-pop drivel!.......2007-01-31

ok, so we all know the one song that made the charts, but that is not typical of the entire album. it is really hard to place what genre to place this in. its a cross between top 40, old r&b,and maybe a little folk. if you like this album, i strongly recommend DMR's live BBC radio concert.

1 out of 5 stars One Good Song Does Not an Album Make.......2006-06-13

Except for the hit song "Come On Eileen" there is little else that is either memorable or enjoyable on this CD. Their cover of Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said" is not very well done.

How another reviewer could state this band deserved as much billing as the Beatles is beyond me. No accounting for poor taste.

That reviewer also makes the statement: "Do I detect Commodore-mania with 'Jackie Wilson Said'". Not sure what the reviewer meant by that statement.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets..........2006-02-08

I have a few CDs that are as good as this one, but none better. It's as perfect a CD as could ever be hoped for.

I didn't particularly like "Come on Eileen" when it was big, but someone (who???) gave me this tape to listen to one night in college and that was it. I could be found on many a night with it on my headphones at RISD's architecture studio. I still have the same cassette and I still love it to death. Sorry to whoever lent it to me... man so I owe you one! If you haven't heard this, do yourself a favor and give a shot, you will not be sorry!

Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin' "Midnight Special," "Jumpin' the Blues," and "One O'Clock Jump." A highly recommended album.

Players Include:
Jimmy Smith - Organ, Organ (Hammond)
Stanley Turrentine - Sax (Tenor)
Donald Bailey - Drums
Kenny Burrell - Guitar

5 out of 5 stars Ivank.......2007-03-23

I am rediscovering JS and started to get his CDs, this one is a must in his work. I had the chance to meet personally Mr S. Turrentine years ago, and listened him alive as well, here you can appreciate his art.
High quality jazz music on JS style. The sound could be better but remember is 1960' production. You will not waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2005-10-29

It is surprising that Jimmy's 'Back at the Chicken Shack' has so many more reviews listed than 'Midnight Special'. This title is just as good as or better than Back at the Chicken Shack. If you love one, you'll love the other. If you have neither, buy both for crying out loud - they're excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece!.......2004-11-25

"Midnight Special" is the lesser-known sister album of Jimmy Smith's monumental "Back at the Chicken Shack." The "Midnight Special" album has exactly the same sound (lineup) and the songs on "Midnight Special" seem to pick up right where "Chicken Shack" left off. Jimmy shines as master of his art, making jamming on the electric organ sound as easy as walking. He's bluesy, funky, and bopping all at the same time. And if the electric organ is the heart of this album, then the saxophone is the soul. There simply isn't a bad note on this album, and it's a shame it isn't remembered with as much popularity and praise as "Chicken Shack." It's just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential.......2004-08-24

"Midnight Special" and "Back At The Chicken Shack," both featuring the same line-up (Jimmy Smith - organ, Stanley Turrentine - tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell - guitar, and Donald Bailey - drums,) are the quintessential organ / tenor sax recordings. Which is better? Well they were both recorded at the same place on the same day so they should be treated as one. In other words, buy them both!

5 out of 5 stars late, late blues.......2003-09-06

it's round midnight. the lights are low, the table candles have all burned down. there's a haze of blue smoke hanging just below the ceiling. the conversation has dropped to muffled whisper. it's time for the blues to roll in. it's nearing time for last call, but there's still minute or two to try to drown yesterday.

that's the feel of jimmy smith's opening number. mr. smith is a master of the blues, and when he entered the studio with stanley turrentine and kenny burrell in tow, a super session was put in place. mr. smith revolutionized the hammond b-3 making it a staple of hard bop jazz, but he never forgot the roots of the instrument--blues shacks and also church halls. this album covers the spectrum, revealing the funk at the heart of jazz, but also exploring the nuances of bop--"a subtle one"--

getting this album is getting one of the true masterpieces of the blue note catalog.

3 out of 5 stars strong songs and tepid tunes.......2007-06-27

Welcome back Sunshine!!! She puts out a pretty strong album though toward the end the music begins to sound like pretty run of the mill R&B. Her strength is the angry black woman anthems, but she really fights against being stereotyped with a few love songs, which are good. I just like it more when she's angry, then you can really hear the passion. There's no shame in being an angry black woman Sunshine, there are many many out there and they need music too, stick to your strengths. Overall though I missed her music and am glad she's back.

2 out of 5 stars Heard It All Before.....................2007-06-26

A lot of people didn't think she could forge a comeback. After her one-hit wonder "Heard It All Before," there was a lot of doubt that Sunshine Anderson would ever surface again. But here she is, some 6 years later, trying again with her sophomore release Sunshine At Midnight. The title's almost as ridiculous as how the songs on this album sound. The background on "Something I Wanna Give You" is too overbearing and "Trust" has a rocked out beat that nobody is checking for when it's coupled with Sunshine's uninteresting lyrics. The production kills a lot of the songs on Sunshine At Midnight. "Good Love" sounds like the beat was created on children's keyboard while "With You Baby" is elementary at best. "My Whole Life" continues the monotonous singing that doomed Sunshine Anderson's first album. Her voice remains mind-numbing on countless songs including "Problems," "Unbelievable" and "Switch It Up," all songs she can be applied to her singing ability (or lack thereof!) The majority of the songs are mundane and dull, with lyrics and vocal presence taking much of the blame. Since there is little to be desired on Sunshine At Midnight, it looks like the sun will be setting on this singer's short-lived musical career.

Count on Midnight Soul becoming the set that nudges the experimental Kinkysweet label into the spotlight, because records this artfully compiled and sequenced sizzle through the underground circuit swiftly. West Coast DJ Tom Thump gets the mood exactly right: On each of two discs, he hauls out the big guns first (jazz legend Roy Ayers with Erykah Badu for the trance-inducing "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" and Peter Malick with Norah Jones for the moody "New York City") then, using lesser-known artists, smoothes out an aural curtain that insists on being kept closed. Tight. This is music to rub elbows by at the chicest house party in town, or to sip martinis to with somebody you shouldn't at the titular hour—the vibe is urban hush-hush, and everybody, former club kids who have hung up their dancing shoes for apartment life especially, ought to be in on the secret. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Each track on Midnight Soul is infused with a passion and emotion found rarely in the electronic music world. It's essential at home listening for two in the modern metropolis.

3 out of 5 stars Three and 1/2 stars for a disc that mostly works.......2006-07-09

I love Roy Ayers, I love Erykah Badu, and Ayer's "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" is a particular favorite of mine so I was surprised that I wasn't strongly moved by the version on this CD. That feeling of vague disappointment carries for me through much of the first disc, which has some strong tracks (Alison Crocket's U R, PPP's I Got You, and Fat Freddy's Bluey) mingled with others that don't take me anywhere new or different. Whereas the first disc has more of an electronica/soul vibe to it, the second disc leans more towards acid jazz/neo-soul and for whatever reason it works better for me. It's much more cohesive. I give the first disc three stars and the second disc four - hence three and a half. I have zero complaints about the second disc. If you program out the duds on the first disc, you'll end with a compilation that makes for nice "let's get to know each other better" listening. Play it at your next shindig, whether you've got 40 people chillin' at the BBQ on your back patio or an evening party for two with someone you consider fffine.

5 out of 5 stars excellent selection of house/electronic soul.......2005-08-15

Don't be put off by the 'sexy' cover art. This is NOT another of those smoothed out 'lounge' mixes of bland & forgettable downtempo house. This is soulful stuff. But you can see that from the tracklisting: kicking it off in high style with Roy Ayers (& Erykah!), Detroit soul from the likes of PPP & Amp Fiddler, quality SF stuff from Greyboy & Kaskade, the UK broken sound..

I bought this straight from Tom Thump's hands in a store on Haight on Saturday. So support the good stuff, and the good guys. B/c not only is he a quality selector, but he's a nice guy as well. If you can't disintermediate like that by tracking him down in SF, buy it here..

4 out of 5 stars Splendid. Soulful. Blissfully Sexy. .......2005-07-08

Compilations this tightly produced, mixed, and arranged very rarely come along. What are a rare find to have the likes of Alison Crockett's "U R," Fertile Ground's "Live in the Light" and Only Child's "U Bring Me Vibes" all included on this record. And you cannot go wrong with anything that includes the "vibe-father" Roy Ayers. I think the only other compilation that comes close to this album is Nova Soul Vol. 2; Otherwise, I highly recommend this one, particularly if you are the type who revels in turning up tasteful music really loud while coasting down a city street with the windows down as passers-by try to listen with envy.

5 out of 5 stars Neo-Soul for Any Occassion.......2005-04-21

This is a fantastic compilation and well worth the purchase price. Very hip soul, chill-house/lounge, and nu-jazz music for grown folks. Trust me, you will love it.

Soundtrack buffs may know that this score to director Bertrand Tavernier's alluring jazz period piece inexplicably won the 1986 Oscar for best soundtrack instead of Morricone and his rich, enduring music for The Mission. That injustice aside, it remains a worthy collage of vintage jazz standards, new material, and contemporary performers, as filtered through the spirit of the story's main character (an amalgam of Bud Powell and Lester Young) and the '50s Paris jazz scene. It's also a tribute to Round Midnight musical director Herbie Hancock, with his crucial understanding that jazz--and especially bebop--can never stand on tradition, lest it lose its very reason for being. Thus he lets then-newcomer Bobby McFerrin loose on Monk's moody title track, gives vet Chet Baker's horn and voice a warm turn in the spotlight on "Fair Weather," and allows Lonette McKee and star Dexter Gordon to infuse Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" with some languorous, subtly sexual heat. Other highlights include a romp through Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning," Hancock's tense, modernist "Berangere's Nightmare," and the spare, enchanting duet with Bobby Hutcherson, "Minuit aux Champs-Elysees." Remarkably, most of the film's music was recorded live on the set, giving it a compelling warmth and immediacy that's increasingly rare. This new edition features expanded liner notes as well as a bonus cut of the title track performed by Dexter Gordon's quintet live at the Village Vanguard in 1967. --Jerry McCulley

Amazingly good! Whether you're chating, reading your favorite writer, making love or just spending some time for yourself, this music will overwhelm you.

5 out of 5 stars A great jazz score.......2006-07-01

I'm not so keen on jazz music; however, I must say that this album is excellent, probably the second best of its kind after the all-time classic soundtrack for "Ascenseur Pour L'Echauffaud" ("Elevator to the Gallows"), one of the masterpieces by Louis Malle. The music here is certainly high class material: atmospheric, suggestive and wonderfully interpreted. If you're a jazz buff and haven't heard it yet, be sure that you've missed half of your life, so GET IT RIGHT AWAY!

5 out of 5 stars This album is the best!!!!!.......2006-06-15

I've never seen the movie and really, I don't have to. I love this album. I thought that it was very nicely done and it is so perfect. But really, it was the song "Round Midnight" with Bobby McFerrin that caught my ear. Listening to him singing that muted trumpet is sooo heavenly. So, I had to find this album if only to hear this song. It was a real treat that I got the other songs as well. "Fair Weather" by Chet Baker is another favorite of mine. I would urge any jazz lover to pick this album up. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT: A SOUNDTRACK.......2005-05-26

This is an Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD. The DVD of the movie is available but I would start here first. Maybe because one doesn't need to have the story told to you on wide screen and dolby sound. This CD is "intimate". Like the "Blue Note" it resonates lonesome nights in distant foreign places where the echo of the night is in Dexter Gordon's lingering Sax wail. Then perhaps none of that is important. Perhaps it's the compilation of so many jazz voices all in this one CD. While making this movie, Warner Bro could have bought rights to the Blue Note records as background. But it was important to give a fresh sound to the challenge of making a film about jazz. Warners turned to Herbie Hancock to develop the music background and Dexter Gordon to write compositions for the film. They did so beautifully without loosing the essential flavor or sense of place and time depicted in the film: Paris and the Fifties. If your interest is to develop or explore jazz music from the early 50s, here's your opportunity. Central to the background are musicians of the caliber of Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hucherson, Bobby McFerrin, Lonette McKee, John McLaughlin, Pierre Michelot, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Tony Williams. You can rent or buy the DVD. This CD will help you soak up that atmosphere now lost from places like the "Blue Note". In this CD you will hear the echo of the strains of 50s jazz normally heard "back then and round midnight". Listen to "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Una Noche Con Francis" and your heart will be lost. ps: I have the original vinyl LP version of "Round Midnight" and somehow, scratches and all, it's almost better heard this way.

5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack.......2005-03-28

This soundtrack is an attempt by Herbie Hancock and his line-up of excellent jazz performers to evoke the jazz scene of Paris in the 50s. I have no way to judge how successful they were since I wasn't conceived until '63 and have never been to France, but I can and will testify that they have produced an enduring recording that I have never tired of in the many years that I have been listening to it. Bobby McFerrin demonstrates that he is much more than "Don't Worry Be Happy" as he does an amazing job of evoking a horn with his voice on the title track. "Chan's Song" and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" also leap to mind, but there really isn't a single clinker in the bunch.

A lot of people mentioned that they can't find the songs of the singles in the CD. The interface in the CD is not very clear. The best way is to use Explorer on the CD. The song files are in Quicktime MOV format in the folder D:\DATA\QTS. I opened the files on Itunes and converted them to audio format. These files CAN'T be played from the original CD on a CD player.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Energy from a Storied British Pub Band.......2006-02-28

Dexy's, in their earlier days, were quite the sonic performers. This album does not contain any of that "Come On Irene" stuff we all saw on MTV back in the early 80s. Nope. This effort shows the true, working-class, blue beat aficianados who could put out a wall of sound and rock the local football supporters into a frenzy with pulsing, frenetic songs. This is the good stuff, for sure. Truly, you won't believe that this band is the same one that donned those queer, matching railroad coveralls and bandanas, and skipped around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots on the telly, chanting "Too Rye Ayeeeeeeeeeeeeee." If you can forgive them that transgression (and I know it'll be difficult), it's well worth your time to check out "Searching ... ." Solid goodness.

5 out of 5 stars The first and greatest Dexys Album.......2004-10-08

I bought this CD having read 'A Music Fans' review not expecting to find any additional tracks and when I found the first five singles (A & B sides) I was delighted. As far as I can tell some of these tracks are not available anywhere else on CD. Tracks like The Horse, Dance Stance (the original version of Burn It Down) and Soul Finger really added to the whole concept of this album. Kevin Rowland has never sounded angrier.

2 out of 5 stars I thought that this would be "Geno".......2004-09-19

I am somewhat confused. I thought that this would have all the tracks that were on the Geno LP but, alas... no.
Only 4 tracks from "Geno" made it on to this CD:
1) Geno
2) There, There My Dear
3) Keep It
4) I'm Just Looking
The other tracks on this album are taken from other sources. Now, please do not get me wrong... I really like anything by Dexy's Midnight Runners; it just cheeses me off that I have to end up purchasing 3 more CDs just to get the original track listing from the "Geno" LP. Also, "The Horse" (from "Geno") is not available anywhere on CD!... thank you.
