Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars one of my favourite r&b albums.......2007-01-20

I purchased this album and brandy's self-titled debut around the same time and was playing them all the time. While I prefer brandy overall, this album was pretty good. I love monica's beautiful voice and it fit really well with the r&b tunes on here, which contained splashes of new jack swing, hip hop and funk. Before You Walk Out Of My Life and Why I Love You So Much were singles and among some of her best ones. Dont Take It Personal and Like This & Like That were big r&b hits in 1995 and were uptempo and radio friendly. A song that stood out to me was Skate, which would have made her an even bigger star, it's a feel-good dance/disco song for the dancefloor. Another highlight is tell me if you still care, which is a remake of the SOS Band hit, and it was remade way better than when janet jackson and mariah carey sampled it, I'd take monica's remake over those other two. The remaining is mostly ballads and they totally match her voice and are melodic & smooth like butter. R&B teen music ruled in the mid 90's, but now girls are all about being slutty and trying to have sex appeal instead of letting the music speak for itself the way these young stars did back in the 90's. At the time of this album, she did several other songs that are worth checking out: a song for the nutty professor soundtrack, and a beautiful ballad, For You I Will for the Space Jam soundtrack. When I first heard the latter, I thought it was a new whitney houston song and was pleasantly surprised when I learned that it was Monica. Also check out Boy Is Mine, she shows a lot of maturity on that album, but it's more pop than r&b like this debut.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best of her four albums (and she was only 14 when she made it).......2007-01-18

Back in 1995, there were some high expectations of then-14-year old Monica. This album certainly meets and exceeds them. "Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)" is a 90s old school classic, as is the slightly uptempo ballad "Before You Walk Out Of My Life". Though not a charting hit, "Skate" is also a great song that really should be played at skating centers.

4 out of 5 stars Remember this?.......2006-07-23

Remember this? Back when R&B still had some actual MELODY instead of that lazy "thug" droning that now permeates the airwaves?

4 out of 5 stars Another Example of "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number".......2006-07-02

Actually I gave 4.5 Stars. When I listened to this debut for the first time,I really doubted whether she was only 14 years old,cuz Monica's vocal showed mature talent indeed...I like every track in the album, which always lets me feel so comfortable...A pretty good work of modern R&B!

BTW,I think that Monica should leave Missy, which maybe is the most important thing for her...

5 out of 5 stars Just one of dem old school days.......2006-04-21

Monica's debut album was really hot, each song of this ambum is nice and reminds me of the Old School days when R&B was better. It's been almost 11 years since it was released and it still sounds great, this album is a true classic.
This girl has had talent since an early age (15), although her voice still changed respect "The boy is mine" and "After the storm". She's an underrated singer with a precious voice

James "Super Chikan" Johnson has blossomed from an oddity, a quirky songwriter and struggling singer-guitarist who claims to talk with chickens, to a juke-blues wizard in four years and three albums. On Shoot That Thang, the Clarksdale, Mississippi, resident has retained his ability to spin tales that capture the folksy weirdness and humor of Delta life, but he displays newfound strength as a melodic vocalist with a versatile grasp of the six-string. He bends notes with the rich, stinging guitar tone of Buddy Guy on "Mennonite Blues," spins out a delightful country ode to lovemaking in "Tin Top Shack," gets funky in the nasty-double-entendre-packed "Staingy Wid It" and "Wrong to Sing the Blues," and offers a clinic in wah-wah pedal boogie and hot-shot soloing on the eight-minute title track. He even closes "Shoot That Thang" with a musical ode to his well-known uncle, Big Jack, mimicking the elder Johnson's trademark stabbing vibrato licks. The Thomas brothers, who play bass and drums, offer granitic support to Super Chikan's flights and double as a soulful vocal chorus on two numbers. There's also a bonus: the CD jacket folds out into a beautiful seven-panel comic-strip bio of Johnson by award-winning comic book author and African American music aficionado Harvey Pekar. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Blues with a smile.......2002-09-03

On this release for Rooster (arguably the best blues record label operating) James "Super Chikan" Johnson and the Fighting Cocks release that infectious feeling they deliver live. There is a long history of comic blues (mainly "blue" blues, as in Bo Carter of "Bannana in Your Fruitbasket" fame) but Chikan brings us into the postmodern era as only he could. The humor he is known for is generally subtle, sometimes outrageous, but always effective. Every cut contains what could only be explained as a sly grin from Chikan. The title cut is the best example of that "live" feeling, an 8 1/2 minute jam that is the standout on the album. If you're lucky enough to see him live, this album will remind you of the great time you had; if you haven't, this is a great approximation. Throughout the album Chikan and the Cocks unleash that funky blues boogie that no one does better. If you're one of those people that find the contemporary blues scene derivative, you owe it to yourself to pick up this album and see how wrong people can be. This album is as fresh as it gets, and Chikan is a true and priceless original. "Shoot That Thang" has all of the qualities of the legendary Chuck Berry: Boogie music at its loosest and best; inventive and well-written lyrics; and one hell of a lot of personality. Don't miss this.

4 out of 5 stars Super Chikan.......2002-06-19

Well, I'm a sucker for the Blues. When I found this, the artist's name and the title appealed to my wackier side. And after listening to the samples, I had to get it. Now that I have it, and have listened to it a few times, I have to say that it's fun, a bit different. I like that the artist draws from his own life experiences when writing his songs. Not always true Blues, but I'm liking it. Overall, a good addition to my music library.

The short-lived first incarnation of the JB's, with future Parliament-arian bassist Bootsy Collins, brother Catfish Collins on guitar, Jabo Starks and/or Clyde Stubblefield on drums, this is the edgiest, meanest, leanest lineup maestro James Brown ever assembled, and the music they made in this single year is still among the freshest, most soul-stirring funk on earth decades later. Check out James's pleas for tenor saxophonist Robert McCollough to "blow me some 'Trane, brother!" Expansive, incisive. This compilation, prepared and ideally notated by Harry Weinger and one-time JB manager Alan Leeds, is so full of groove it could doubtless sub for a faulty pacemaker. --John Corbett

5 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE--- Faulty Versions Out There.......2007-03-21

I would love to find a true copy of this album--- it is reputed to be a classic compilation of J.B. and Co. at their funky prime.

    However, BUYER BEWARE:

I have purchased this CD three times-- from more than one seller--- and each time the CD that is in the case is "The James Brown Ultimate Hits" and is NOT Funk Power 1970.

I do not blame the sellers for the CD being faulty, since the insert and even the label on the CD itself wrongly identify it as Funk Power 1970.

If there is a seller out there who can listen to the CD in the jewel case and confirm that it really is Funk Power, please email me and let me know--- since I would still very much like to purchase this album.

    thanks

    5 out of 5 stars James Brown's best.......2007-02-03

The best of all the funk James Brown albums. Worth the price soley for Bootsy's Collins' endlessly danceable bass line on "There Was a Time(I Got To Move). Was he ever better? James screeches "singin' the song with tears in my eyes," and you believe him. Great liner notes that tells the story of this unknown teenage band. The sound of the band is fresh, as if James was inventing funk music on the spot; inspired to say the least. The classic rhythm section includes Phelps "Catfish" Collins on guitar, and "Jabo" Starks on drums.

5 out of 5 stars BADDEST OF THE BAD! GET ON UP!.......2006-01-31

JAMES BROWN... JAMES BROWN... JAMES BROWN... wheres the bridge?
This guy had been around for years before, and very succesful at that. He had basically created the platform for FUNK but he hadn't quite set it off, so to speak, until he got together with BOOTSY and CATFISH COLLINS. BOOTSY was a thuderous funkateer who would later be responsible for helping George Clinton get his P-Funk off the ground. In 1970 James Brown was ready to fly.. SUPER BAD! Fresh, this album kicks it out all over the place. If you are only familiar with the stuff from the sixties (I.E 20 GREATEST HITS) you have heard some goods, but you have not heard the best. SEX MACHINE just grooves, and keeps groovin', yeah, like that, like a sex machine. TALKIN LOUD AND SAYIN NOTHIN is another solid. If you dig on Funk, like Parliament you should definately peep this album once or twice and hear it for yourself. The icing on the cake here is the last track which is a public service announcement by the Godfather of Soul himself. "Don't do drugs" he says "cuz they are Super Bad!" Just like James Brown kids, Super Bad.

5 out of 5 stars Funk! Funk! Funk!.......2004-12-02

Soul Brotha #1, indeed! We know him as James Brown, and we love him as James Brown; the one who is credited as inventing funk as we know it. On this compilation, we are treated to the funkmeister, while he gels with his short-lived band called The JB's (featuring a young Bootsy Collins before he would join Parliament), who created some majorly super-bad (pun intended) funk during their short-lived period in 1970. The music on here will most definitely get you shaking; it'll make you want to dance, work up a sweat; anything which'll get you moving, and you won't wanna stop till you drop!

While the music alone is powerful enough, it's also moving to hear James talking about important societal issues: drugs, race, poverty, the need for harmony amongst all people & all races, and the need for people of society to come together to help make the world a better place. To hear these messages infused in his (already powerful and empowering) music is something truly moving. However, reality can sometimes be a devastating thing to accept, as evidenced on this disc: at the end of the disc, James is heard in a 1970 recording warning many of the dangers of drug abuse, and encouraging many to stay away from them. It's heartbreaking to hear this from him, only to find out that he himself would have his own battle with drug addiction in subsequent years. It's truly a tough pill to swallow in many ways.

From James' fiery, manic, impassioned vocal delivery, to Bootsy's propulsive basslines, to Bobby Byrd's commading supporting role as co-vocalist, and the rest of the band's performance, the music on here is an unrelenting assault on the soul: it's a funk-attack, guaranteed to get that old rump of yours shaking, followed by the rest of your body. If you can grab hold of this compilation, snatch it up, as if your life depended on it! It's truly worthwhile to have in your collection: funk addict, or not!

    5 out of 5 stars (...).......2003-12-06

My first James Brown disc was "70"s Funk Classic's" and that was always my favorite, until I finally found this disc which has the unedited versions of "SEX MACHINE" and "SUPER BAD". Boy am I glad I found this one- HOLY-HOLY-HOLY!! This is 100% straight up no filler funk on the one!! From beginning to end is one groove after another. I also recommend the above mentioned disc which has "AINT IT FUNKY NOW", "FUNKY DRUMMER" and "THINK 73"-all classic must hear songs. Keep the Funk Alive!!

For Real formed in 1993, releasing their first album, It's a Natural Thang, one year later on A&M Records. This female R&B quartet struggled to hit it big; "You Don't Know Nothin'," hit no. 88 on the billboard hot 100, no. 80 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, and hit no. 21 on the Rhythmic Top 40; "Easy To Love," hit no. 65 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart; and "You Don't Wanna Miss," struggled as well. But this shouldn't destroy these singles credibilty, For Real have wonderful old-school vocal harmonies, which lift the album. For Real was just another female quartet that got lost in the New Jack Swing, Club/Dance, Urban mix, and suffered from lack of promotion like most groups did in the early to mid-90s.

3 out of 5 stars born to sing........1999-01-15

though they entered the market at a time when girl groups were a dime a dozen and poor promotion was a death sentence, for real is definitely the real deal. covering musical styles from zhané to the jackson 5 to miki howard, necia, t, josina and wendi exhibit exception skills and harmonies that easily put them in a class with en vogue and brownstone. one listen to the acapella "you don't know nothin'" leaves no doubt that for real's lack of recognition is through no fault of their own. thoguh this album doesn't have any real stand-out tracks, it makes for pleasant listening.

hello there rap fans around the world, im here to write another review to hopefully help you with your decision on the cd.

Now if you guys looking into buying this album have not heard richi rich on his own and have just heard him on tupacs albums and from such songs as " YOU AINT GOTTA LIE TO KICK IT " from 2pacs album "ARE YOU STILL DOWN" and wonder if he is any good on his own1?

rich has the same lied back style of lyrics and voice as in " LIE TO KICK IT " and on his album he has a great producer which trows good beats for rich to do his THANG with.

deep bass line with a G-FUNK like sound in the back and a unique OAKLAND style but i must admit thought i thought more of the cd when looking at it's reviews on amazon but when i got it home after buying the cd found it a little dissapointed! it is a hard to listen to album but it did eventualy grow on me but i still wouldn't pay big bucks for the cd. i do love rich's voice and style of lyrics. (most be a oakland thing) lol. anyway as i do in all my reviews which you are more then welcome to read lets.

** sum up the album for the listeners. **

if your a lied back listener and enjoy loud bumping bass then this album maybe for you.

if your more of a dj quik fan and prefer more groovey funky beats and song, like biggie then itz worth buying but dont pay big bucks for it. i think around about $16 under is a fare price. hope i was helpfull every1.

    5 out of 5 stars Vocal Brilliance.......2004-04-07

This has a very similar track listing to Take A Dip. There are about 5 different tracks on here to Take A Dip. This is a slightly superior album. Producers include Babyface, Daryl Simmons, Tony Rich and Chris "Tricky" Stewart amongst others. This may be generic R&B in a similar vein to Boyz II Men, Az Yet and Bobby Brown. But with the quality of songs and their amazing vocal talents it rises above the pack. This album was a commercial flop, so bewildered by this LaFace records got Dallas Austin in to produce a few tracks, dropped some tracks from this album and retitled the album Take A Dip and re-released it. Take A Dip also flopped and they lost their recording contract never to be seen from again. With their immense talents I can't understand why none of them got a solo recording contract. Although Demail did pop up on The Braxtons (Toni's sister's)"So Many Ways" album.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to find and very dope.......2007-05-26

This album isn't in circulation anymore so it is extremly hard to find. that is why the price for a used one is 86 bucks. I wouldn't pay 86 dollars for the album but it is a very dope, classic album. Before Dub C hooked up with Ice cube he was rhyming with the maad circle and spitting dope lyrics that spoke out against the police as well as other social issues. Stand out tracks like dress code and ain't a damn thing changed are just the tip of the iceberg of how original and lyrically impressive this album is. If you can find it, I suggest picking it up.

      5 out of 5 stars a rarity, indeed.........2006-09-20

..it's a breath of fresh air, knowing that SOME rappers can still talk about real & deep concepts, outside of "my hos, my b**tches, my Caddy, my strap, and my bling..". It's the lyrics on this tape/cd that kept rap true to its artform. Definitely one the coolest tape/cd's to be dropped, this millenium..

I have this on cassette, and i STILL dig it..

hopefully, somebody, somewhere on this planet, on some retro label, will reissue it with some extras. If not more music, then more of..GRANDMA! (tha's my girl!)

5 out of 5 stars THE SHADIEST IS THE BOMB.......2006-04-29

Been a W.C. fan since the LOW PROFILE days and growing up to DJ Aladdin...DUB C is the bomb no doubt. Too bad I had to cop this again at a much higher price than what I paid back in 91...No Matter the COST I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT DUB-C's music.. WESTSIDAH RIDAH!!! BABY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE MAAD CIRCLE !!!!...A MUST HAVE..........2006-03-21

THIS WAS OUT BEFORE ALL OF THIS SO CALLED " SOUTHERN-CALI. RAP " EMERGED...FOR INSTANCE, WESTSIDE CONNECTION/MACK 10/EASTSIDAZ/THE GAME/SNOOP DOGG/ETC...ALL OF THAT STUFF DOESN'T COME REMOTELY CLOSE TO " AIN'T A DAMN THING CHANGED..."....THIS ALBUM IS TRULY A " CLASSIC "...

"DRESS CODE", "BEHIND CLOSED DOORS", "OUT ON A FURLOUGH", AIN'T A DAMN THING CHANGED"....THAT'S 4 REASONS WHY THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST RELEASES TO COME OUT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA....ALL THE RAP THAT W.C. DID AFTER THIS, DIDN'T COME CLOSE TO WHAT HE BROUGHT ON THIS ALBUM...

      * D.O.C. "NO ONE CAN DO IT BETTER"
      * N.W.A.
      * WC AND THE MAAD CIRCLE
      * C.P.O " TO HELL AND BLACK "
      * SCC " SOUTH CENTRAL MADNESS "
      * CMW " IT'S A COMPTON THING ".....THOSE ARE THE MUST-HAVE CALI. CLASSICS....

      5 out of 5 stars Real Album.......2006-03-13

Dub-C and the rest of the posse really made an unbelievably strong package, this is a REAL album from start to end. Every topic on this album is the truth. I have to use the cliche "classic" here too, 'cus this is really one.
I was blessed I found this on cassette from Nuso, you can see his review here too. I highly, highly, recommend you to buy this and lot more hard-to-find classics from him. Price is nice, and delivery is fast. Props to him!
