Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Bought this CD after reading the rave reviews. Not what I look for in music. This group seems to be more about sex appeal than music. More about production than real music--one can barely notice that there is a string quartet playing. Could only stand to listen to this once-could find nothing of interest. One heck of a photo shoot, though. SOmeone must have had a field day with that. This CD seems to be more for the sake of some sexy pictures than its music. A real turn-off.

Bond Shines Another Day.......2006-06-11

Fans only had to wait two years for Bond to punch out another Classical/Pop/Dance album. The finished product is some of the string quartet's best work. With the return of violins, a viola, and a cello, these instruments provided the basis of Bond's Classical music sound. But to acheive the full sound of Bond, the electronic instrumention for Pop/Dance music returned as well. This time around, Bond dove further into the Classical genre and arranged pieces to match their own sound. With a name like Bond, the string quartet also performed their version of a James Bond Theme entitled "Bond On Bond", and it landed them a spot to the score and soundtrack for the film The World Is Not Enough. With the release of this remarkable record, it was clear that Bond and their new form of Classical music would not diminish.

It is a good party music. All are very talented individuals. Everyone has their own taste of music, and Bond is mine.

Shine On!.......2005-06-02

This is the album that I really liked. Although I downloaded it, I also play this one nonstop. I love the whole CD, and that's rare for me!

The album is liked so much in my house that my mother and father take it from me--and I recently had to make copies of the CD so they can play their own!

"Shine" is a great addition to your collection if you love Bond, no doubt about it.

Touted by a highly suspicious media blitz ("Brian is Back!"), 1976's 15 Big Ones caught the nostalgic wave generated by the surprise success of Endless Summer and Spirit of America, the double-album compilations of the Beach Boys' mid-'60s, summer-music prime, and rode it close to the crest of the charts. One doesn't have to get much further than the tepid (albeit top 10) cover of Chuck Berry's's "Rock and Roll Music" to realize that band founder/original creative spark Brian Wilson may indeed have been back, but sounded like he was working under duress--if he was working at all. With a covers-heavy tack best described as a parody of the band's original trademark sound, wed to some of the mid-'70s worst production trends, it's an album that shows just how much the public still yearned for the band's classic sound, even if their faith ended up being "rewarded" by the likes of Mike Love's embarrassing "Everyone's in Love with You" and "T.M. Song." Conversely, Brian was definitely back for '77s Love You, an album that's become something of a critic's darling, if only because it hews so bravely to the strange musical vision that seeped from Wilson's then-troubled mind. Brian's synth-heavy production managed to be at once dense and minimalist, while the songs remain some of the most consistently loopy concoctions the band ever recorded. While his vulnerable romanticism is also on display, it's Wilson's playful sense of humor that dominates, from strange odes to "Johnny Carson" and the "Solar System" to innocent romps like "Ding Dang" and "Mona." Love You.......2007-08-04

Arguably Brian Wilson's first solo album. There isn't much middle ground with this album, you either love it, or hate it. It is the divide between Beach Boy fans and Brian Wilson fans. Brian's voice is course and rough, shockingly so, it almost makes you wince to listen initially, especially after being used to Brian's angelic, dulcet, perfectly pitched tones of earlier years, when you get past that, the joy is there. For anyone who loves a Moog synth, this is for you.

I love, Love You...

15 Big Ones has it's moments and is a stellar companion piece to Love You.

On Love You - Brians voice takes some getting used to here. He went from a sweet falsetto to a raspy croak after 3 years of heavy drug use. However he is back in action with loads of new songs and a mediocre Brian is better than no Brian.

Triumphantly,Brian Wilson is back with his Beach Boys bandmates! It is 1976,and the Beach Boys are now 30ish,bearded and "Beach Men". The girls will never forget how handsome they all were a decade earlier. One of the 15 BIG ONES is a cover of Chuck Berry's ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC,earlier covered by The Beatles. THE BEACH BOYS LOVE YOU was released in 1977,a year after 15 BIG ONES. I vaguely remember,as a child in the 70's,seeing the Beach Boys on American Bandstand performing RARM. These are the group's fifth and sixth non-compilation albums,respectively,on the Brother label,a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Fans were very happy when Brian rejoined his bandmates. For several years,beginning in the mid-60's,he was battling depression and drug addiction. So he put on a few pounds,big deal! He's back!

superb reissue of two albums that really go well together.......2005-05-02

Now here's a damn great reissue--take these two quirky albums that make an ideal pairing and put them together on a single disc; remaster them exquisitely; and add solid, informative liner notes. Not counting the "Endless Summer" & "Spirit Of America" compilations, the Beach Boys hadn't put an album out in well over 2 years when "15 Big Ones" appeared in July of 1976. With those two aforementioned compilations having been surprisingly huge commercial successes, it seems that Mike Love felt it was high time to try and capitalize on that success, so he cooked up the "Brian Is Back!" campaign, and "15 Big Ones" was released, its title referring both to the 15 songs on the album as well as the 15th anniversary of the Beach Boys. Consisting largely of `oldies' covers, "15 Big Ones" has been badly over-criticized over the years--it's actually a heck of a lot of fun. Also, it really does point the way to the cult classic "The Beach Boys Love You"--the Moog bass that`s so prominent on "Love You" crops up on the cover of "Chapel Of Love", and the loony, off-kilter, gospel-flavored "That Same Song" is a definite sign of things to come on the later album; in other words, the presence of Brian Wilson, who receives the production credit for the album, is strongly felt. However, despite the fact that Brian was going through a notoriously bizarre/ troubled period, "15 Big Ones" is a feel-good album all the way--the somewhat disco-fied version of "Rock And Roll Music"; the harmony-rich surf-rock throwback "It's OK"; the plodding, synth-string laden "Chapel Of Love" with great lead vocals from Brian; the energetic version of "Palisades Park" with spirited lead vocals from Carl; Al Jardine's's lively riff-rocker "Susie Cincinnati" (left over from the early `70s); and the aforementioned "That Same Song" are all a lot of fun. Even Mike's religion-themed "Everyone's In Love With You" is still respectably tuneful and by all means listenable, despite the corny lyrics, and the brief "TM Song" is highly amusing with it's mock-argument intro leading into the main song portion. "Had To Phone Ya", was previously done by Brian's then-wife Marilyn and her sister Diane (aka Spring) in the early '70s--the version here is elaborately-arranged and engagingly tuneful, with Mike, Carl, Al, Dennis, & Brian all sharing the lead vocals, although Carl sounds painfully bored. Like I said, I don't think this album deserves such a bad rap--if you're in the mood for giddy fun, you'll find lots of it on "15 Big Ones".

That said, "The Beach Boys Love You", released in April of 1977, is even MORE of a blast. Brian's pretty much in total control here (or totally out of his mind, depending on how you look at it). In addition to producing again (with Carl credited as the `mixdown producer`), Brian receives sole writing credit on 11 of the 14 tracks (although it's long been rumored that Brian's notorious shrink/ guru Eugene Landy helped with a lot of the lyrics), & Brian also played the lion's share of the instruments, including the technically rudimentary drumming. Indeed, the album was thought to be released as a Brian Wilson solo album entitled "Brian Loves You". Also, it's almost beyond all belief how much Brian's voice had changed over the course of the decade--as if you needed a reminder, the album contains the Al Jardine-Brian Wilson composition "Good Time" with a lead vocal from Brian recorded in the early `70s which explains why it lacks the hoarse, lower-register tone of his vocals on the rest of the album (goes to show what drugs can do). The resulting album is, on one hand, extremely primitive, but at the same time, Brian's incredible songwriting ability and his ear for harmony remain on full display. On `Side 1' of the album, Brian is basically living in a fantasy world, offering up rousing, irresistibly fun songs like the stomping album-opener "Let Us Go On This Way" (written by Brian & Mike); the lustful "Roller Skating Child"; the 4-chord, Phil Spector-style "Mona"; a tribute to "Johnny Carson"; the ultra-catchy, highly amusing "Honkin' Down The Highway" (the version here restores the drum intro that was missing on the old Caribou CD release of "Love You"); and the brief "Ding Dang" (written by Brian & Roger McGuinn) with its delirious party atmosphere. `Side 2' then, in somewhat similar fashion to 1965's "The Beach Boys Today!", is the `ballad side', offering up such gems as the waltzing, wondrous, & gloriously silly "Solar System"; the tender "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" (with lead vocals from Brian & Marilyn); the brilliantly tuneful ode to babies "I Wanna Pick You Up" (with lead vocals from Dennis & Brian); and the casually anxious "Airplane" which ends with an "I-can't-take-it-anymore" boogie-woogie coda. "I'll Bet He's Nice" is a strong piece of material, although I prefer the demo version that appears on the "Brian Loves You" bootleg opposed to the overproduced version here. The album closer "Love Is A Woman" is kind of half-baked, but it does have a vibe startingly similar to Leonard Cohen's "Death of a Ladies' Man" album, which, tellingly, was produced by Phil Spector and came out the same year.

Overall, there's an absolute wealth of unique and terrific music to be found on this two-fer. No, this isn't "Pet Sounds", but if you're truly interested in the eclectic genius of Brian Wilson, i.e., a serious music listener, this disc ranks at must-have status.

Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Trumpeter/composer/bandleader Charles Tolliver co-founded the Strata-East label with pianist Stanley Cowell, in 1971, but it's been a long time since we heard his underappreciated genius. This CD falls into the "where have you been?" category. It features a big band that includes Cowell, pianist Robert Glasper, saxophonist Billy Harper, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Victor Lewis. Save for a Gil Fuller-like rendition of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," the remaining six tracks are penned by the leader. Picking up from his big band charts from the 70s, this ensemble, driven by Tolliver's bravura Hub-toned trumpet lines, swings and sings with a propulsive, pan-generational sound. "Rejoicin'" is a spirited waltz, contrasted by the evocatively voiced, Trane-style "Mournin' Variations" and the Latin-tinged bopper "Suspicion," with Tolliver's son Ched on guitar. At first glance, "With Love" seems to be revitalising hackneyed big band jazz.
The arrangements are excellent, and the various parts of the big band move with the agility of a small group. The bright, brassy clamour is genuinely exciting.
Further listening to extended pieces like "Mourning Variations", however, suggests that something extraordinary is taking place. "With Love" connects to an even older tradition: gospel music.
Horns, rather than voices, are calling and responding, but the fervour and passion are unmistakeable.
This album, featuring a somewhat neglected figure from Blue Note's heyday, trumpeter Charles Tolliver, nails its colours to the mast from the off, with a rip-snorting, brawling opener, "Rejoicin'", full of shrieking brass and tumultuous soloing.
Thereafter, the temperature seldom drops below boiling point, even on a Tolliver arrangement of "Round Midnight" which, taken at times at a tempo approximately three times as fast as is customary, unexpectedly reveals itself as possessed of a wonderfully swinging chord sequence perfectly adaptable to the hurtling version given of it here.
There are quieter moments, notably in "Mournin' Variations", originally written (in 1972) as an orchestral suite for Max Roach, but overall, this is a band that idles in joyous exuberance mode and swiftly goes up through the gears from there.
Tolliver himself is heavily (and tellingly) featured as a bright, blowsy soloist, but pianists Stanley Cowell and Robert Glasper also shine, as do saxophonists Craig Handy and Bill Saxton.
There is, undoubtedly, a great deal of charm and subtlety about the big-band work of, say, Maria Schneider, with its pastel colours and textural delicacy, but occasionally it's great to hear a unit at full throttle, roaring and being generally rumbustious, and Tolliver's unit is a perfect example of such a band.

Marvelous Arrangements; Splendid Execution.......2007-06-04

On the first listen I was intrigued; on the second, excited; by the third play I was an enthusiastic Charles Tolliver fan. This is big band music--18 to 20 musicians perform on each piece-- of very high caliber. Tolliver composed all the music except, of course, Monk's Round Midnight. Arrangements are detailed and intricate; sonorities and polyphonies achieved by the brass and reed sections are thrilling. Fine solos are performed by at least 10 different group members. In some portions, only the rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) plays, providing brief, small-group feel and making the return of the full group that much more exciting. Several numbers contain Latin elements; one piece--Right Now-- provides a bit of funk; Mournin' Variations has a lovely, adagio-like section with flute and reeds. Overall, the music swings like crazy. Enjoyment is maximized by the capability of today's recording technology. Can it get much better than this?

Trumpeter, composer and arranger Charles Tolliver is one of the unsung heroes of modern jazz. Tolliver made his debut with Jackie McLean in the mid 1960's and ever since, he has investigated the intersection of composition and improvisation as a leader, sideman and educator. Tolliver's profile has been on the rise lately with his excellent sideman appearance on Andrew Hill's Time Lines LP and a short residency for his big band in New York. So, he really makes an appropriate choice for the first collaboration between the Blue Note and Mosaic labels in newly recorded music (they have collaborated for years on re-issues.) There are some wonderful musicians making up the band: saxophonists Billy Harper and Craig Handy, pianist Robert Glasper and drummer Victor Lewis among many others. The music is extraordinarily exciting, beginning with the blasting original chart "Rejoicin" which features an excellent solo from the leader and very good ensemble playing. The title song, "With Love" builds slowly to an explosive conclusion with the entire group whipped into a ferocious swing. Next up is a very interesting re-arrangement of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" with Tolliver leading the way with some excellent trumpet soloing. The great tenor saxophonist Billy Harper gets an excellent solo spot on "Mournin' Variations" which Tolliver originally wrote for a Max Roach project. The music starts off in a meditative fashion before evolving into a Mingus-like holy rolling swing. The recording is rounded out with performances of the originals "Suspicion" and "Hit the Spot." The first has a bit of a different feel thanks to Tolliver's son Ched, who contributes some fine electric guitar, and the final tune is a blow out for the whole band that is nearly head spinning in its power. This is an astoundingly good progressive big band album, with great charts and superb playing. Kudos all around but especially to Blue Note and Mosaic for taking a chance on this startling music. Very highly recommended.

Big Band Done Right!.......2007-01-18

Trumpeter Charles Tolliver is one of many great jazz players who is known to enthusiasts but for whatever reason has not garnered the wider acclaim of which he is worthy. Last year saw the tide begin to turn. Mosaic released a 3-CD Select set of his `70's work and his role on pianist Andrew Hill's celebrated return to recording for Blue Note generated renewed interest in this underappreciated veteran.
"With Love" features the trumpeter at the helm of a multi-generational big band and is his debut as a leader for Blue Note. Interestingly the disc also brings him back to the label where he made his recording debut as a sideman in 1964 on alto-saxophonist Jackie McLean's acclaimed album "It's Time."
Comprised of six original compositions as well as a sassy reading of Monk's "'Round Midnight," Tolliver's charts spotlight a meticulous attention to nuance and detail. Taking great care to accentuate the strengths of both the ensemble and the soloists, he effectively retains an inherent looseness which bolsters the group's ability to sound fresh and inspired as they navigate intricate lines and swing like mad.
Tolliver's 60's affiliation with McLean yielded four Blue Note LPs. "Right Now" was the title track to one of those albums. Recast with an extended intro, the ensemble punctuates the backdrop as the trumpeter fires off one of his many inspired solos.
Also revisited is a pair of tunes from the `70s- "Suspicion" and "Mournin' Variations." The former was written for a pianoless quartet. Here its pulsing theme gives way to Tolliver blowing over just the drums before the band joins back in and the heat once again builds. The latter is the trumpeter's adaptation of the spiritual "Singin' Wid A Sword In Ma Han, Lord" and was originally commissioned by Max Roach to be performed at Montreux in '72. It eventually appeared, complete with string section, on Tolliver's album "Impact" in '75.
All in all "With Love" is a very welcome return for a seasoned artist who still has plenty to say. Hopefully this is just the first step in what will prove to be a fruitful partnership between Tolliver and Blue Note.
This release is also the first in a new partnership between Stamford, CT. based Mosaic Records and Blue Note. It will be interesting to see what fruit this partnership yields as they move forward.
