Album Description

Seven-time WC Handy Award winner and Texas blues legend Anson Funderburgh—best known for his collaborations recorded with soulblues singer Sam Myers—has recorded extensively for Black Top and Bullseye labels. The blending of Texas and Mississippi styles gives Funderburgh and Myers' music an infectious swing that is heard throughout Blast Off: The Best Of Anson Funderburgh. This collection contains gems from nine albums, including "Come On" from 1981's Talk To You By Hand, "Changing Neighborhoods" from 1987's Sins, and "Rambling Woman" from 2003's Which Way Is Texas?

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Excellent Intro to Texas Blues Man.......2006-06-23

Anson Funderburgh's solo career begins its twenty-fifth year with this well chosen anthology. It includes tracks from his Black Top debut TALK TO YOU BY HAND ("Come On") through his latest on Rounder's Bullseye Blues WHICH WAY IS TEXAS? ("Rambling Woman").

Most of these tracks feature Sam Myers on vocals/harmonica. The now seventy-year-old Myers (who has worked with such blues giants as Elmore James) joined the band in 1986. In addition, Myers is a fine songwriter ("I Done Quit Getting Sloppy Drunk" and "My Heart Cries Out for You" on this anthology). [Trivia alert: That's Beavis and Butt-head creator Mike Judge on bass on the opening track. He was a member of the Rockets from 1987-1990.]

This is an excellent update of 1992's anthology THRU THE YEARS. My only complaint is that BLAST OFF duplicates eleven of those songs. But overall, this is a throughly enjoyable and satisfying collection of this modern Texas blues artist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

3 out of 5 stars Not their best.......2005-06-25

Anson Funderburgh has done some of the tastiest blues guitar playing ever recorded, and the harp playing and singing of Sam Myers make this band a classic. It is no wonder that they have been around for so long and have won so many awards. Although "Which Way Is Texas" is decent, I just don't think it's their best effort. The one thing I most admire about this band is Anson's guitar playing, and there isn't enough of it here to satisfy me. The songwriting isn't as witty, and, on the whole, this CD is a little bland compared to their other recordings. This is also Anson's first attempt at singing, as far as I can remember, and it's quite a rude shock after hearing the deep mellow voice of Sam Myers for so long. If you are looking for blues that is as clever and tasteful as it is down and dirty, Anson And The Rockets haven't done anything to top "Sins". Their first two albums before Sam Myers joined, "Talk To You By Hand" and "She Knocks Me Out" are also pretty darn good.

There's another thing that I should mention. Although I understand and agree with the spirit in which comparisons of Anson Funderburgh to Stevie Ray Vaughan are made, they are a bit misleading. They are both outstanding blues musicians, but since it is, after all, the guitar playing that is the centerpiece of most blues, it's only fair to point out that these two have very different styles. Stevie Ray had a fat tone that I have often heard referred-to as "wall of sound", which puts him closer to someone like Johnny Lang or Billy Gibbons than to Anson. Anson has a reedy, vintage 50's-style tone, that is much cleaner. Their choice of material is also different. Anson is closer to the blues tradition of the '50s and '60s, more like music you'd hear in a honkytonk or a biker bar, whereas Stevie Ray leaned more toward the Hendrix-style rock end of things. Anyone who bought an Anson Funderburgh record thinking only that he was going to be listening to another Stevie Ray would likely be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly listenable band.......2004-08-20

I had the pleasure of seeing Anson and the Rockets perform at Chord On Blues while visiting friends in the far suburbs of Chicago a few weeks ago. We had just wanted to hear some live music, and didn't even know what band was going to be playing. I did some research on these guys and found out that they've played St. Louis numerous times over the past year and a half. After hearing them live and immediately thereafter purchasing this CD, I'm definitely a fan. They had both a great stage presence AND a great sound. I'm honestly surprised that these guys aren't a better known name.

My knowledge of blues is pretty limited, but Anson and his band are extremely listenable and accessible, but seem to be the real thing- authentic Texas blues reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughn but with added credibility by having Sam Myers on vocals and harmonica. While none of the lyrics stand out to me, the music and the singing both sound incredible to me. The sound on the CD is punched up a few notches form the live performance with the addition of a small horn section. As they in concert, the keyboards are a major highlight of the music for me, both with pinao and a Hammond B3. While Sam appears to be the consummate bluesman here, Anson Funderburgh does vocals on two songs, and displays strength with a more modern sound to his singing.

I've since ordered several older titles from this band, and as I said, look forward to seeing them in concert again. This album is highly listenable, deeply soulful and has sparked my interest in pursuing other contemporary blues bands. Learn from my mistakes, and don't let the fact that a name is unknown deter you from exploring some of the best music you'll ever likely hear.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-09-11

Anson, Sam and the Rockets tee it up and hit it straight and long with this CD. I've been listening to it over and over since I bought it at their show the other night. When it finishes, I hit play to start again. Blues at it's best. Top ten reasons to buy this CD:

10) It's the Blues man.
9) It's Texas Blues.
8) Not a bad tune to be found.
7) Good for the calves (can't stop toes from tapping).
6) Track #6.
5) Awesome keyboards.
4) Did I mention it's Texas Blues?
3) Sweet, Sweet Guitar.
2) That over grown kid Sam is as good as ever.
1) Two Words: Anson sings!

And quite well I might add. See them live if you can, but get this CD. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Rocket Powered Blues from the Lonestar State.......2003-08-12

What a great record! Everything about this recording wreaks of the stuff of a Grammy and W.C. Handy award. Anson Funderburgh is one heck of a guitarist and his licks power most every song on this album. AF is complemented by a bunch of talented musicians and legendary harpist/voclaist Sam Meyers from the Howling Wolf era. The Rockets ignite from the get go keep it up for 13 tracks. There is not a dog song on this recording and if you like contemporary blues at their best, this recording won't disappoint. Happy listening!!

3 out of 5 stars rockin' but mellow blues.......1998-07-06

older black blues musicians seem to have to seek out younger white players these days to keep the sound alive. carey bell does, blind mississippi morris, and sam myers. the rock influence really cuts through the blues in these cases. this album bounces back and forth between rock and some really old blues sounds, and that gives it a nice mix. myers sounds a bit tired though (i read he was diagnosed as diabetic last year) , and his muddy watersish baritone sounds a bit winded here and there. he's a good, though not great, harp player, but for my taste doesn't play it often enough on this date. funderburgh plays his usual tasteful guitar, always understating rather than going over the top. this one won't blow you away, unless maybe you put it on 11, but it's good blues for those who don't want to be clobbered.

4 out of 5 stars A hot CD of tunes marking Anson and Sam's 10 years together.......1998-06-24

Anson and Sam put out this collection last year to mark their 10 years together. It's not a retrospective collection, but rather a mix of mostly upbeat songs reflecting their past collaborations. A few really good originals are here, along with some terrific covers, especially "I'm Shakin'" "Lookin' the World Over" and "Oh-Oh." Sam is the usual -- cool, funny and gravelly. He plays good harp, too. Anson is hipper than ever -- sharp and tasty on guitar and a very good rhythm guitarist. (He's got to be one of the best blues guitarists playing today. I just saw Anson and Sam for the third time here in Indiana, and Anson alone is worth the cover charge. I could listen to him play all night!) If you have liked any of Anson and Sam's records, you'll like this one a lot. It's houserockin'.

Anson Funderburgh is an excellent diplomat for contemporary blues, and for the blues in general. He's accessible enough to hook the new listener, creative enough to be interesting, and entertaining enough to keep people listening. Change in My Pocket consists of 12 tight, well-written tracks, from the opening title song to the precise, high-energy closer "Things Have Changed." Of the material in between, slower songs like "Little Girl" and the sensual "Highway Man" are the high points of the album, though the other songs are strong as well, with some excellent harmonica work from Sam Myers. Although Funderburgh won't necessarily win any points for originality with this album, there are worse things you could have in your stereo at your party on Saturday night. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Chicago blues meets Texas blues........2006-05-10

Blues comes in a lot of flavors. There is Chicago made famous by people like Buddy Guy and Howlin Wolf. There is Texas Blues that been played by the Vaughan and the Winters brother. There is also Mississippi Delta Blues, English Blues, the list goes on. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers, brings the best of these different sytles together. Mr Myers's raw voice, Anson guitars licks and the Rockets backing them up really works here. If you want a place to start or to own only a single album by this band, this is the album to go for, because in my book this is their best album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2003-06-14

This is one of the best blues albums ever made. Along with Jimmie Vaughan's recent "Do You Get the Blues?". I'm not exaggerating. If you like real blues as opposed to "Blues Hammer" type of bands, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Change in my Pocket.......2001-07-25

This wood be a great CD to teach a class on blues and roots music! A perfect example of a band playing TOGETHER. So tight and smooth, great rythm section, tastefully understated guitar solos, and Sams' vocal warmth combined with great production make this one of my favorite blues CDs. What a great Bo Diddly feel on "Willie Jo". A modern classic.

    4 out of 5 stars A Place Called Cool.......2000-06-13

Somewhere between Mississippi and Texas is a place called Cool. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers are among the few remaining residents of this hip little community. "Change In My Pocket," the bands latest effort on Bullseye, provides music fans with quality music that is all too lacking in today's overproducted, rock-influenced blues. The Muddy Waters flavored "Highway Man" is Anson and Sammy at their best but note the tasty piano fills ala Otis Spann offered up by John Street. This band has it all. "You can't be the one for me" is classic Anson and the Rockets with brilliantly simple drumming by Danny Cochran. If you are a fan of the blues this cd has to be part of your collection.

    3 out of 5 stars Anson Funderburgh.......2000-09-20

A girl I once dated who first saw Anson at the King Biscuit Blues festival in Helena Arkansas used the words "Master of the Stratocaster" to describe Anson Funderburgh. I of course thought, "Come on, Master, what about Eric C. and SRV", but once I saw him play, I knew what she was talking about. He really combines the 50's sound with a classic blues sound. And he is only half of it. Lead singer Sam Myers is a huge black guy with Coke bottle lenses for glasses. He looks like he is in his 80's and moves real slow, but it all makes a good show. When Sam puts an old fashioned microphone up to his mouth with his harmonica, he defines the word feel when it comes to blowing the harp. I myself am a Bass Player, and pull this CD out everytime I need to pracice my up-right Double Bass. I know I am in for a good work. It is a great CD to play at parties too. Everyone always wants to know who it is. I highly recomend this CD.

If you want to hear what really good blues guitar playing sounds like, Anson sparkles on this one. You'll hear t. bone walker's quiet soulfulness and b.b. king's deep lyricism welling up in riffs shimmering, sonorous, passionate and fresh. Anson will help you appreciate the old blues masters by demonstrating what it means to play with your heart and not your head. He is one of the few contemporary blues guitarists who gets it.

1 out of 5 stars Anson Funderburgh, Rockets: Thru The Years: A Retrospective.......2000-09-20

I myself am a Bass Player, and pull this CD out every time I need to practice my up-right Double Bass. I know I am in for a good work. It is a great CD to play at parties too. Everyone always wants to know who it is. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Blues for a summer night!.......2000-06-21

Funderburgh's laconic, lyrical guitar, Myers' smooth vocals and blues harp breaks with background tinkling piano and ensemble all working together, make for great, summer evening on the porch, listening. This record and the more recent "Change in my pocket" chart Funderburgh's bands over the years and provide good value.

      5 out of 5 stars If you don't love this-you're deaf..or you don't know blues!.......2000-10-26

Whether you are a guitarist, or not - you can't fail to be impressed by this CD. Otis has one again excelled himself with the aid of Debbie Davies and Anson Funderburgh, not to mention all the other fine players. Every track on this CD just exudes fine blues and r&b and I strongly recommend it to anyone. Check Otis out live too to see probably the best Blues you will ever see!

1 out of 5 stars Ghastly Guitar Phrasing.......1999-11-18

Anson is fine, but the other guitars here are unsoulful and tasteless. What an over-estimated player Grand is! Notes not in the right places and he speaks when he should be quiet -- offenses which beset most british bluesmen. Like Clapton, Otis just doesn't get it. I'll take 50's B.B. King any day.

5 out of 5 stars Guitars on Fire!!!.......1999-09-10

What a great blues feast this CD is! From the blistering opening cut of 'Guitars on Fire' right through to the soulful final track 'The Big Prayer' the level of commitment, passion and sheer quality never falls below 110%.

And how could it? The list of musicians contributing to this CD reads like a Who's Who of Blues Greats. The guitars of Otis Grand, Debbie Davies and Anson Funderburgh contrast and compliment each other beautifully. The vocals of Sugar Ray Norcia and Brother Roy Oakley are pure gold, and the rhythm section of Mudcat Ward's bass and Neil Gouvin's drums cook up the coolest groove. Add to this guest musicians of the calibre of Ike Turner (good grief!), and Tony Coleman and the 'Bee Horns' from the BB King band.

The reason I am so impressed with this CD is because it works so well, the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts.

Otis Grand, who assembled this banquet, obviously knows the blues like the back of his hand. This CD has certainly wetted my appetite for more. He must have a helluva live act!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!!.......1999-09-10

It seems pointless to me reviewing a new Otis Grand release. Let's face it, the man just doesn't do bad; and when he surrounds himself with musicians of the calibre of co-headliners Davies and Funderburgh, vocalists Sugar Ray Norcia and Roy Oakley, a rhythm section comprising Neil Gouvin and 'Mudcat' Ward on drums and bass, Anthony Geraci and Ike Turner on keys, along with B.B.King's horn section and drummer, Tony Coleman, who also contributes a couple of vocals .... you get what I'm trying to say? It is testament indeed to his standing in the world blues community that Grand can pick up a phone and assemble such a line-up to help with his project. And believe me, even though the billing is shared, this is Otis Grand's project! From the choice of material to the classy production, Grand has pulled out all the stops to ensure everything is perfect. Since playing on Joe Louis Walker's 'Great Guitars', Grand has been consumed with expanding the concept. Enlisting the help of Funderburgh and Davies, writing a bunch of new songs and setting aside ten days in the studio for everybody to bounce ideas off each other, Grand has produced an album worthy of following the multi-award winning 'Perfume and Grime'. From the explosive opening of 'Guitars On Fire' to the down-home steel guitar closer 'The Big Prayer', everything in between is a gem. Having already started to break big in the States with his last effort, if this album doesn't do it for Croydon's best known American, English nationalised blues guitarist then nothing will. With this album alone, Grand shows that he has more talent in his little finger than most of the hyped up super-stars being paraded as musicians today. 'Grand Union' is certainly one of my contenders for album of the year, so it follows that it comes highly recommended. But then again ... you already knew that!

PS - This is my review published last year in Britain's 'Blueprint' magazine. I still stick with what I said at the time. Steve Cooke
