Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente .......2007-03-22

3 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals, Vol. 2.......2006-03-22

The purchase went as we had hoped. The delievry was as promised, and the quality of the product equal too, or above our expectations.

3 out of 5 stars Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

      Product Description

Gordon Titcomb's new album: THE LAST TRAIN is a CD that that will appeal to the discriminating ear of both Folk Music and Bluegrass Music fans alike. The supporting musicians on this record are some of the most well known in the World: Arlo Guthrie, Mike Auldridge, Bill Keith... all major artists in their own right. The 10 original songs on this CD were written while Gordon was out on tour with Arlo ( Gordon's been a member of Arlo's band for several years) From the soulful, introspective ballad: " If It Were Up To Me' ,encompassing such truth and depth that any listener will feel though Gordon had penned the song for them alone, to the "high octane",Bluegrass powerhouse: "Gold Plated Love. this CD is one of those rare, "no artificial ingredients, no fillers" albums that you can listen to over and over again. This is an album that takes you on a journey that is filled with life, love and laughter.

4 out of 5 stars Gordon sings and picks with sincerity and subtlety so his tuneful stories and messages are easily remembered .......2005-10-25

Playing Time - 29:58 -- A member of Arlo Guthrie's group for over three years, multi-instrumentalist Gordon Titcomb starts his debut solo project with a leisurely ballad, "If It Were Up to Me," but by the second track, "Gold Plated Love," Titcomb and Co. are into high-octane bluegrass. That song is catchy with the hook "your gold plated love turned my ring finger green." The title cut is a train song that mentions the City of New Orleans, Wabash Cannonball, Midnight Flyer, and Lonesome Freight Train. It sadly was arranged without any mournful harmonies on the chorus, but the strength of this project is Titcomb's emphasis on originals that cover many musical moods from folk, bluegrass and country inspiration. Besides his own lyrical twists, he does this by incorporating a little piano and viola ("I Had a Dream"), some accordion ("The River") and his musical consciousness takes him more into folkgrass territory. Gordon also has a witty side that he captures in "Pennies a Day," a cute country song driven by the walking bass line.

Best known for his work on mandolin and pedal steel, Titcomb is also a solid guitar, dobro and banjo player. Fine examples of his picking pyrotechnics are found in the banjo breaks on "Gold Plated Love" and "Snake River." Gordon's high-octane mandolin break on "Snicker Doodle" would easily bring up prices at the pump. I was impressed with Gordon's all star musical guest list for the album: Arlo Guthrie, Mike Auldridge, Bill Keith, Mark Schatz, Frank Solivan II, Mike Munford, Jon Caroll, Stefan Custodi, Dede Wyland, Kip Martin, John Previti, John Miller and Antoine Silverman. It must've been a blast to see his large body of originals come to life in the hands of these artists. "Snicker Doodle" and "Snake River Hoedown" are instrumentals that require some nimble fingers from these masters. While not a defining voice of the time, Titcomb's baritone voice is pleasant. The strongest cuts incorporate Solivan's and Wyland's harmonies, and one nostalgic number with trio ("Take Me Back") is a yearning for eternal youthfulness that most of us can relate to. Presented in ¾-time, "The River" shows a deep appreciation and connection to nature and our environment.

By age 17, Gordon had left high school and was playing with Mike Williams, opening shows for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Over the years, he's played with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, Patrick Sky, John Herald Band, Woodstock Mountain Review, Happy and Artie Traum, Bill Keith , Jim Rooney, Rory Block, Eric Andersen, Kinky Friedman, Barry and Holly Tashian, Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, and now Arlo. Titcomb's also recorded in more than 2000 sessions. For the last 30 years, Titcomb's made his living recording and playing as a sideman. I'm sure that it was strange, albeit very rewarding, to show up for recording sessions and have to assume the leading role of callling the shots on what songs to record, how to arrange them, and who to feature for solos.

Based on his music, Titcomb seems like an amiable and genuine person. He's straightforward and easy to understand. That's primarily why I like his songs. Some come across as more meaningful and effective than others, but they're without gimmicks. Gordon sings and picks them with sincerity and subtlety so his tuneful stories and messages are easily remembered. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Executed!.......2005-09-14

This CD embodies all that I have come to expect from a musician who has worked with such great artists. There are soothing songs, comical songs, and just a great "folk-ish" sound! The recording quality is quite well done, and the mixing is appropriate for the genre. Also, the cover art is well done, simble and full of meaning. If you enjoy easy listening with a nice touch of humor, please buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Catch "The Last Train"!.......2005-08-23

This CD is great! I've been watching Gordon perform with Arlo Guthrie for several years now, accompanying him on just about every string instrument known to man, including piano. His playing has always blown me away, so I was even further impressed to find out that he sings--not just anything, but his own songs--and was really happy he recorded this CD! His songs are wonderful--well-written lyrics, melodies that have you singing along in harmony, and even a couple instrumentals that just beg for toe-tapping. What more could you want?!

      5 out of 5 stars Gordon's CD!!!!!.......2005-08-04

I've been listening to Gordon's CD exclusively since I bought it at Arlo's Church last month. It's one of those that words can't describe... "you just had to be there" in order to understand.. so "be there" and buy the CD... NOW, kid!

If you haven't checked out Kirchen and the boys live, this CD puts you right on the dance floor. Their quirky, high-voltage treatment of some rock 'n' roll and country nuggets, as well as some be-boppin originals, will undoubtedly leave you with pop in your bop and glide in your stride. The highlight: Kirchen's hyperlinked rock 'n' roll riffs on Hot Rod Lincoln. Whew!! that man can play!

I enjoy Bill Withers' music since I got introduced to him in 1999. He's the cat that started it all in the '70s. Boy he's such a powerful Genius and a talented singer and songwriter. He best known for his works on "Lean On Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", you name it. He's still the baddest man. I hope he'll comeback with a new album pretty soon 'cuz it's been so long like y'know 20 yrs., 2 decades since his final goodbye album WATCHING YOU WATCHING ME was a success.
