Blessed--or is it cursed?--with a visage that's a distinctly haunting echo of her father's, Lisa Marie Presley has either spent most of her adult life assiduously avoiding a music career or engaged in Machiavellian schemes to secure one, depending on your spin source. But here it is, informed by no small amount of tabloid-ready living (three failed marriages, including two bizarre years the King's daughter spent playing Princess of Pop to Michael Jackson) and a slate of modern record-biz heavy hitters. The album's first single, "Lights Out," is a countryfied pop collaboration with Glen Ballard in which the singer's tough, bittersweet lyrics obliquely confront the daunting legacy of her father and the Memphis where her "family's buried and gone." Her husky alto isn't the only thing that recalls Sheryl Crow; the bristling textures of Andy Slater (Wallflowers) and Eric Rosse (Tori Amos) are a veritable textbook of modern-rock techniques, wed to some smart cover choices that bolster her music's moody, introspective bent. But that gloss sometimes makes Presley seem like a guest artist on her own album, making one curious to hear her in the setting where her father was so often riveting: Alone in the spotlight. They don't call it the gene pool lottery for nothing. -Jerry McCulley

buy it........2005-10-21
Love this. Just flat out love it. I heard a snippet of SOB and was hooked, not knowing it was rock royalty. I like her second cd too. But this one is the one I play more often. It stays in your head for days. "Indifference" is worldly wise, aching, lovely. The songwriting and lyrical skills seem to unnoticed by the media, perhaps because of her parentage. As for all the snarky posts about her marriages, etc., what hoooey. This just rocks.
Love this CD.......2005-09-24
I bought this CD after buying her newest one. They are both great!!
Better Beware... This CD is awsome!!!.......2005-09-20
I had heard a lot about this CD before finally buying it. I didn't rush out and buy it just because I wanted to compare her with her father (for the one living underneath the rock, her dad is ELVIS PRESLEY!). I waited for over a year and then got this CD. I have to admit that I really LOVE IT!!!
Tracks:
S.O.B - 10/10 I love this song and it's one of my favs on the CD.
The Road Between - 9/10 really good slow song. I can relate to this one.
Light's Out - 10/10 What can I say about this one??? It's freaking awsome and another fav from the CD.
Better Beware - 8/10 Funky little song that grows on you after awhile. I didn't really like it at first but have grown to like it.
Nobody Noticed It - 10/10 One of the most heart felt songs on the entire album. Talking about her father. You can feel her sadness and loss on this one.
Sinking In - 10/10 THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM!!! I love this tune that she wrote to her first husband, Danny.
Important - 7/10 An "ok" song. I like her sound on this one; however, I don't really understand the lyrics.
So Lovely - 9/10 Sweet song about her two children.
Indifferent - 10/10 Another one of my favs. I love this song and she sounds really amazing on this one!
Gone - 6/10 Song on the album that I like the least. If I had to take but one song off the album this one would be it.
To Whom it May Concern 9/10 - Awsome little song about children hooked on medication.
Hidden Track Excuse Me - 10/10 Love this song! Sad and beautiful at the same time!
Lisa Marie steps out of her father's shadow.......2005-08-25
Lisa Marie's smoky vocal delivery makes this album worthwhile. "S.O.B" and "Lights Out" are standouts, both giving a scathing criticism of both her personal life and family legacy. Lisa Marie has competent songwriting skills, though some of her songs could have been more lyrically diverse. A great step in what may be a promising musical career.
Awsome, Love it.......2005-08-20
This CD was AWSOME, it isn't quite as good as Now What, but still great.
S.O.B. 10/10 killer opening track
The Road Between 10/10 a very good slow song
Lights Out 10/10 My FAVORITE song on the whole CD!
Better Beware 6/10 Ehhh...the worst, its to funky, and it just wasn't my song.
Nobody Noticed It 10/10 I really like this song, love the meaning, beautiful ballad
Sinking In 10/10 Great song, really love this one.
Important 9/10 Good Song, not the best still a good track!
So Lovely 10/10 love the meaning to this one to, one of the best!
Indifferent 10/10 Great Song, Like this one, good lyrics!
Gone 9/10 Good song, not my favorite
To Whom It May Concern 10/10 I really like this song as well.
*Hidden Track* 9/10 Like this song, very cool!
You need this CD, my second favorite CD I have (my favorite being Now What.) Pick this and Now What up, you won't regret it!

A wonderful blast from the past for British Motown group.......2003-11-11
The Pasadena's are a band which never really hit it here in the States, which is too bad. Unlike many American pop bands who were inspired by the numerous bands from the UK, this group took its inspiration from the other direction.
Blending the sound of Motown, and house dance music, this CD is a collection of fun songs reminiscent of the Temptations, or the Four Tops. This was the debut CD for them and one stand out track, "Tribute", is a fitting song about the legends in soul music which played ever so briefly in the USA charts and was the song that inspired me to purchase this CD nearly 14 years ago. I have now officially worn it out from overuse, and recently purchased the re-release with bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are worth the effort as well.
If you are unfamiliar with this band, but enjoy the uplifting toe tapping funky sound of Motown music; give this CD and this band a chance. You won't be disappointed.

People waiting for a new splender cd can somewhat rejoice. Waymon Boone the singer is in a new band called Headrush. Their album will be relesed in June 2005 on Digital Musicworks International, a digital only label. check them out on purevolume.
I LOVE THIS GROUP!!!.......2005-02-05
When I heard their first album I was totally hooked. I think this album is equally great, but I am still hooked on the first one :) I don't know why they aren't very well known. They need more air time on the radio. Can't wait for the next album. If you haven't gotten any of their albums GO GET THEM!!!
Excellent Songs !.......2005-02-04
if you like melodic alt rock buy this CD, you won't be dissappointed, for me it was a really pleasant surprise, the songs are top notch and the production quality is awesome, a lost gem ...
great,great,great.......2004-07-08
I have been listening to this CD for the last several months, and the more I listen to it the more impressed I am. This is a great, great, great cd. This is one of those cd's that you want to listen to every song on, where every song is incredible and quite unique, quite a diversity of style. I am very impressed - certainly one of the better recent cd's I own - ranks up there with Forty Foot Echo, Hoobastank, and a few others. Definitely worth buying. Hope to hear more from them.
TOTALLY Underestimated band.......2004-06-16
This is by far the most talented song writing group to emerge from the crap being put out by the major labels in at least the last 8 years. Songs are well crafted, melodic, memorable, thoughtful, and the production is flawless. Raw energy mixed with control and finesse. You will not be disappointed in this album or the debut, which was also excellent. These guys should have been huge and returned the music industry to profitability and respectability. Unfortunately, the band got little support. This is the direction music should be moving in.

Another underrated R&B group.......2005-12-07
Along with Shai and Portrait, Riff was another underrated four part harmony group of the early nineties. There most remebered for the songs Everytime My Heart Beats, My Heart Is Failing Me and White Men Can't Jump. The group displays a lot of vocal talent on their covers of Voyage To Atlantis and There'll Never Be and the uptempo track Judy Had A Boyfriend.
New Jack Swing at it's very, very best.......2004-09-28
After releasing their decent (but dated) debut self titled album featuring the US hit "My Heart Is Failing Me", Riff then had a smash hit with the Dallas Austin produced title track from the Wesley Snipes movie "White Men Can't Jump". After that hit, hopes were high for this set, and it surpasses these expectations. This album reminds me of Blackstreet's debut album in both quality and feel. Surprisingly (considering the excellence of the album) there were no really big name producers, just Bernard Belle (Former Teddy Riley collaborator) and The Characters; Troy Taylor and Charles Farrar. There's gorgeous slow jams like the title track and some awesome upbeat songs "Judy Had A Boyfriend", "Adjust Your Love" and "Hold On Me". Pleasingly there is no filler tracks just killer tracks. So if you loved Blackstreet's debut album (their best) and would love some quality jack swing pick this album up even if it is a little pricey. P.S. These guys can sing with some powerhouse vocal performances.

Customer Reviews:
Great music, but beware of CD rot.......2006-12-08
I have enjoyed Al Stewart's music since his first album, and saw him perform most of these songs live in my younger years. These were among the albums we played at 4am in my student days, along with "Songs of Leonard Cohen" and others, while we talked the world to rights.
So it's great to have Al's first three albums (including "Love Chronicles" which was infamous at the time for one of the earliest appearances on record of the F-word, used entirely appropriately) all together on a double CD. It's also good to have all the songs from both versions of "Bedsitter Images", which at some point was reisssued with a few tracks changed.
BUT... I have now owned two copies of this set, purchased a couple of years apart, with different cover art, and both have suffered from CD rot. I don't know the quality of current pressings, but I am reluctant to spend my money a third time to check this out.
Whatever you do, buy this from the UK site, rather than here!.......2006-10-18
This double CD set is RIDICULOUSLY cheap in the UK now - you'll get it for around $10 on the high street in England. After shipping to the states, it must still be significantly less than the ludicrous quoted price on this page!
This is the early stuff, showing the promise of future brilliance, and is highly recommended if you like any of the later albums at all.
This particular collection is welcome because of the inclusion of tracks left off the later pressings of the first album - I was confused for years when my vinyl copy seemed to have some of the songs missing from those I remembered from listening to older friends copies; once I bought this set I realised that my memory was in fact more reliable than I'd thought.
Great early works by Al.......2006-08-17
This is not Al Stewart's best stuff. His 1970s work is his best, including Orange, Past Present & Future, Modern Times, Year of the Cat and Time Passages.
After you've purchased the above works, you may wonder what Al Stewart to listen to next? I like this two CD collection better than any of Al's post-Time Passges albums that I've listened to. This collection has a folk rock sound to it that's completely lost in Al's more polished but less interesting later works. It reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel.
Intelligent MASTERPIECE !.......2005-10-17
Hopefully, I won't repeat what others have said here. Their reviews are thoughtful, well written, and I agree with almost everything they say.
I've had a cassette copy "The Early Years" since high school in 1979. It featured many of the songs on this collection and the album "Orange". I saw this collection and jumped at the chance to get those songs on cd. What blew my mind was hearing how good the other songs were.
Astonishingly good.
This is not music for impatient people. Time seems to slow down as each song washes over you. It feels like being on a long vacation. Unhurried, and completely satisfying. I think the songs benefit from not being played to death on the radio. They become yours, free from previous associations.
The lyrics are brilliant, of course, but the arrangements are so tastefully timeless. Because of that, I have never grown tired of these songs. When I discovered them in high school, my musical I.Q. went up several points. An experience I would later have when listening to Nick Drake, The Lilac Time, and Belle and Sebastian. (hint, hint)
The booklet included is a wonderful read. The photos quite fun. No lyrics, but you'll probably memorise them eventually.
Don't forget to check out "Orange" which, in my mind, goes perfectly with this collection. And if you haven't heard "Modern Times" and "Past, Present and Future", you're in for a treat.
David A. Magnusson.......2005-08-16
An amazing genesis for a most gifted singer/songwriter. I played the living heck out of this album (CD-actually). All his younger songs have a message and a theme of what great things were to come from Mr. stewart. "Zero She Flies" absolutely rocks! The background piano in "Bedsitter Images" haunts me! "The Elf" starts the album (CD) off on a jovial note and it never lets go. "Life and Life Only" is absolutely brilliant. This is listening to the Byrds, Hollies and Buffalo Springfield before indulging in Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. It is listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver before hitting the White Album and/or Abbey Road. This is require listening for all Al fans!

One of the best underground classics you've probably never heard, Freestyle Fellowship's little-known, long-out-of-print first album was brilliantly conceived and executed. As much as we abuse the concept of "ahead of its time," the Fellowship's 1991 debut predicted a sound and approach to Left Coast underground hip-hop that not only eschewed the omnipresence of gangsta rap but also issued a bold challenge to all other corners of the hip-hop nation that L.A. was not to be taken lightly. Songs like "Sunshine Men," "For No Reason," and "Here I Am" let MCs like Aceyalone, All in All, Mikay 9, P.E.A.C.E., and Self Jupiter strike out bold statements of lyrical prowess over masterfully sampled tracks that pulsed with insight, energy, and inspiration. Your underground collection is not complete without this addition to the library. --Oliver Wang
Customer Reviews:
Good Concept -Bad Business.......2005-03-03
This group has a great concept and its members are talented; I have no problem with that. My concern is that what makes the concept is the choice of samples. However, there're no credits given for the samples. The members give credits to everybody except the creators of the music that they used. Hopefully they,at least, got the proper clearance to use them. Concept and talent is good but business is business; and this appears to be bad business.
this is the greatest rap album ever created.......2005-01-26
if you have not listened to this album, you cannot claim to really understand hip hop.

I need to but this album the samples on this sounds great.
Great wierd style rapping that is Great all of them are classics
all of them every fan should buy this.
Music To My Ears.......2002-12-17
One word to describe this album: wow. The eloquence and flow of these fellas is unbelievable, the lyrics just get better and better every time you hear it. This album also contains some of the funkiest beats to come out of 1991.
If Intercity Griots was a great album, that makes this album indispensible to anyone who claims to be a hip hop head.
BUY IT.
If you like this album then you should check Buhloone Mindstate by De La Soul and the other Freestyle Fellowship l.ps.
Hip hop masterpiece........2002-05-25
Recorded in 1990, this is the first album by the most legendary group of the LA underground crew known as Project Blowed. If you want to hear the origin of modern rap styles, get this album. The 6 tracks by Mikah 9 and Aceyalone are worth the price of admission by themselves. Mikah & Acey's styles are fast and fluid with a jazz ear (they flow over Miles' "So What"!). The beats are also very nice, jazzy and percussive and upbeat.
This album is a moment in hip hop history, that no true hiphop fan should be without. (If you want to delve more deeply into this history, pick up Mikah-9's Timetable for a few more tracks of early rap styling from 90 and 91). If you don't believe me, the heralded DJs Q-bert, D-Styles, and Shortkut (of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz) all listed "To Whom It May Concern" as one of their top 10 favorite hiphop albums of all time. Yes, it's that good, and that important in the chronology of hip hop. Nobody else was rhyming like this in 1990, and nobody else even tried it till years later.
All respect due to the mighty mighty Freestyle Fellowship!

To Whom It May Concern.......2004-10-08
This is a special CD. When I was a college freshman a long time ago in the mid-60's I found this album and checked it out of the library and renewed it every three weeks for two years. After I was married in the early 70's my wife and I found another unopened album in New York City and paid $25.00. Basically, we wore this album out after several years. When it was released and reappeared on CD in the 90's it was a dream come true. The unique melodies and the superb Nelson Riddle orchestra backing up Nat Cole are a combination unequalled and captured for a lifetime. If you are looking for what I would call "one of a kind songs" like A Thousand Thoughts of You and from a master of musical expression, you will be pleased with To Whom It May Concern.
A Truly Lovely Experience.......2003-11-26
Nat King Cole's exquisite voice lovingly performs 12 seldom-heard ballads to the exquisite orchestrations of Nelson Riddle. Nat's mature voice is priceless, of course, and good examples of his singing are a treat you can enjoy your whole life long.
Whether the atmosphere brings to mind a beautiful park (amazingly like the cover!), nice suburban digs, a cozy club on a golf course in the '50's, or just plain suspended bliss, it's a lovely painting in sound. Nelson Riddle's orchestrations utilize both brass and strings with his typical dexterity. The colors are appropriately light yet soft for this project.
My favorite track is the title track, with its delicate mood of loving, wistful sorrow. Another choice would be 'Can't Help It', another airy if ardent piece of bliss that goes from Ultra-smooth to roof-blasting (brilliantly recorded!) Big Band, all in the same breath so to speak. Nat's singing holds an obvious sensitivity and affection, in fact this may be the single best showing of that particular quality to his work. Listen to the tag on 'The Heart Of Jane Doe' and of course the title track for prime examples of this special quality he had.
The stereo sound was magnificently recorded (in that prime year for "natural" stereo sound, 1958), and sounds rather good here, if definitely over-processed in the digital transfer. No "improvement" was called for, but they couldn't leave great enough alone. The results of the tampering can sound anywhere from negligible to harmful depending on listening conditions. An audiophile issue of this CD would be a heavenly listen.
Also of note to Nat's fans is the fact that the title track was written by Nat, and the song "Unfair" was recorded by Nat a couple of years prior to Nat rerecording it for this album. There were many other tracks recorded in the sessions producing these songs, and many may well make great bonus tracks for a future reissue (hint hint).
I would have to say that some may have found it a bit "precious," but it has aged in a way that its appeal is still potent. If one gives it a fair try, they may find themselves fond of it. If you enjoy good vocals, ballads and/or orchestration and can get a copy of this CD, odds are you'll never part with it unless it's to get a better reissue of it in the future.

A Smattering Of Gems And Snorers.......2006-08-22
Note: This is a re-issue until Rhino Records releases the Remastered Expanded version.
Released in one of the Gibb's slow periods (1972), this CD contains mostly a collection of individual works, most of it hodgepodge and forgettable. However, for the real Bee Gees fan, it is a must have. Other than the big hit, "Run To Me", other standout cuts are, "Road To Alaska", a unique toe-tapping rocker frequently used in concerts, "Paper Mache, Cabbages & Kings", a fun novelty song that bounces around with oddball lyrics, "You Know It's For You", A Maurice Gibb song that is one of his best lively mood songs and "Alive", a poorly received single that is one of the best written ballads the Bee Gees have done. It is worth a listen if not a purchase.

Perfect Little Record.......2007-01-19
One of those albums that get better with every listen. Run To Me is one of the most beautiful songs, comparable to How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. Another standout is Alive.
It's Not Odessa, but It's Pretty Darn Good.......2006-05-16
This little-noticed album in the Bee Gees catalogue deserves another spin. While it lacks the scope and dimensions of the epic Odessa, it does share some lyrical and harmonic similarities to that classic.
I enjoy the open Beatles references throughout this album. "Bad Bad Dreams" sounds like John singing an updated version of Paperback Writer. "You Know It's For You" openly apes Paul's Ram-era output, and it's surprisingly effective.
The pyschedelic "Paper Mache, Cabbages, and Kings" could have fit easily on Odessa, a bizarre song with inexplicable lyrics and musical changes. "Road to Alaska" is another highlight, with a Stephen Stills/Manassas country-rock feel to it. The closer, "Sweet Song of Summer" brings it all home, with nice Moog effects to round out this unpretentious, laid-back, and very enjoyable addition to the Bee Gees canon.
One of a kind.......2006-03-06
This often overlooked and under appreciated album is really interesting, but not in a way usually associated with the often awe inspiring bee gees. Maybe it came out this way because the boys were a little ragged from being legends and touring the world with their encyclopedia of hits. Of course the first cut is one for the best of comp, but as the album continues you hear something that has all the ingredients of good bee gees music..... but something is shall we say a little... off kilter. This is best showcased in "Paper Mache", which is an absolutely hilarious experience to listen too. I go nuts when I hear this song. I won't even try to explain it. They knew they were missing the target here, but still it got put out and it's actually quite "special" in it's own right. Not for anyone who is not a fan already though. Lets just say they'll "miss the point".
THIS IS A GOOD BEE GEES ALBUM!.......2005-09-07

You Know It's for You.
