5 out of 5 stars So Damn Happy.......2006-11-03

This cd is a reminder of youth but my real reason for the purchase was the song about he and his sister and the feelings it evoked when seeing the picture of them on the piano and remembering their lives. Ironically, it was introduced to me by my much younger son, proving that the music is somewhat timeless. I enjoy the entire recording but that is by far my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sense of Humor.....and of HUMAN.......2005-07-24

I first saw Mr. Wainwright at the Philidelphia Folk Festival in 1973, and though I'd been listening to him for a while, it was great to be in his presence. At the time his big hit was "Dead Skunk". And I've listened to his life as told in his songs for many years. One of my favorites is called "Homeless" which I believe is a tribute to his late Mother and is on the "Last Man on Earth" album. It rang deep and true having recently lost my Mother. A wonderful humanist who is not afraid to live up to his human mistakes and share them with other humans. Are there any left?......I like this album because you can experience some of the repore that he easily shares with his audiences. The way he engages you in his story.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant, touching, insightful & witty..........2004-12-21

This is a very entertaining live album from the most talented member of the Wainwright family. There are 17 songs that are very nicely balanced between being poignant, touching, insightful or witty. A couple of the more humorous songs are "Heaven" which paints such a pretty picture of drinking, smoking and orgies you almost can't wait to die. "Something For Nothing" is about illegally downloading songs `besides those guys from Metallica are getting too fat'. The band is basically Loudon with his guitar along with Van Dyke Parks on piano and Dave Mansfield on violin with appearances by Richard Thompson playing some really nice guitar on "The Home Stretch" and daughter Martha Wainwright singing a very funny duet titled "You Never Phone". Excellent banter from Loudon and strong participation from an attentive audience enhances the live experience.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, endearing, poignant, irascible and witty.......2004-05-22

As impressive as Wainwright's work has been over the past 35 years, this live album shows that the burnish and perspective of age has only deepened the quality of his work. His songs, pose contrasts to brilliant dramatic and literary effect: humor against anger, a capella singing against spoken interjections, creating a rich catalog of emotion from which he draws. Add a devoted crowd and the effortless musical backing of long-time friends (and family), and you get a live album that perfectly frames Wainwright's mastery as a singer, songwriter and stage performer.

Wainwright's trademark humor is on full display, with his vision of Woody Allen's "Sleeper" future taken to the afterlife in "Heaven" ("There'll be lots of drinking in Heaven / Smoking, eating and sex / What you didn't do in this life bad for you / Will be totally cool in the next."). He pokes a sharp, ironic stick at file sharing ("Something for Nothing"), and revisits the tragedy of Tonya Harding ("Tonya's Twirls") in a song that, removed from its historical currency, is still surprisingly moving. Equally moving is the deeply sentimental autobiography of "The Picture," a lovely ode to his sister and their shared childhood.

Wainwright's masterful stage presence, and the fluidity with which he sings, plays and interacts with the audience is truly staggering. The product of many, many nights just like these (taped in 2002 at Largo in Los Angeles, and the Mystic Theater in Petaluma, CA), Wainwright is completely effortless in the limelight. His accompanists (Van Dyke Parks on piano, David Mansfield on violin) and guests (Richard Thompson on guitar, and Martha Wainwright on vocals) weave their way perfectly in to his colorful tapestry.

With a collection of his songs that stretches from the early 80s to the late 90s, this is a nice introduction to the last 20 years of Wainwright's writing and a singularly compelling look at his perfect showcase, the stage.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2004-04-29

This album is great! I discovered Wainwright by accident and am so glad I did. This could be the album to turn all your friends onto him. The tunes are quite catchy--just watch out that you don't end up with (...) in your head, 'cause others might not approve. "Tonya Twirls" is the best commentary I've heard on the former ice queen--including all those late night hosts who tried to be funny about the Tonya Harding debacle. "The Picture" is my favorite song from History--poignant and beautiful. His social commentary is both biting and hilarious. The liner notes are great--he comes across as a slightly bitter middle aged man who's still out on the road having a blast. This album deserves to be heard!

4 out of 5 stars The Queen aint what she used to be...but this is still a damn good album!.......2006-04-15

My mother turned me on to this album...and for about two months straight it was the only thing in my CD player. I still pop it in from time to time and sing along to the tracks. I have been a long time Aretha fan, but mostly her old classic stuff is what I've favored. With this album, she has proven that she can blend the old and the new. The music doesn't sound dated like she cant let go of the past, but it also doesnt sound like she's trying to record a bunch of songs that shouldve went to Destiny's Child. With the exception of about three songs, I really like this whole album. Aretha's voice isnt clearly what it used to be, but she STILL represents on this album!

1 out of 5 stars The Queen is... Well, she ain't what she used to be.......2006-01-20

This album is very unimpressive. Comparatively, her previous album ("A Rose...") is a masterpiece compared to this. The 10 songs are not memorable, just average R&B and pop, with a religious song ("Good News") thrown in. It's almost as bad as the carwreck that was Whitney Houston's "...Just Whitney".

The song "Ain't No Way" is not a self-cover of her classic Atlantic recording, it's a new song by Gordon Chambers ("That ain't no way to treat a lady"); seems like they could have given it a different title. \

Giving this album one star is an exageration.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Queen!!!.......2005-08-07

Aretha is still holding her title as the Queen of Soul. And this album only adds to her long list of greats. She always seems to find something that can touch the listeners hearts, minds and imaginations. This album does exactly that. One of my favorites is Wonderful. My entire family, joins in to sing along with this upbeat soulful hit. If you want to party all through the house, this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars What Makes Aretha (Aretha) So Dam Happy She is still Aretha.......2005-05-13

I have purchased and listen to this CD and very please to say that Aretha gets better with time. Aretha always manage to stay on top in the music industry by trying out new ideas (Hip Hop). I've read some of the other reviews and was wondering what was those people listening to. The song that Mary J Blige wrote and sang on is awsome(Holding On)! Don't know why it was not release as a single. The Aretha of the 60's sing and reflect the music of those times but in order to reach and sell music to the music generation of today one must be able sing and appeal to the audience that is buying the music of today. Aretha is just that type of artist, she is not afraid to dare to be different and that's why her music spand over so many decades. No, Aretha can't go back and relive the pass but she manage to stay current working with musician and song writers of today. YOU GO GIRL! Even some of the artist that has come along since has not been able to do that. As far as her vocal are concern, she don't wail like the Aretha of the 60's but she soars with the same soul conviction. I would like to hear her do some standard or cover some early Motown sounds but what ever she sings she SANGS!

2 out of 5 stars So Damn Unhappy!.......2005-05-01

I'm a fan of Ree's music and I pay my due respect to the Queen of Soul but she misses it on this album.

She recorded too many tracks in her falsetto tone which becomes annoying after the fifth or so track. She also has a vocal sound that makes me think that she had her dentures in while she recorded this album.

The album overall pulls Ree in too many directions - from the hip hop flavoured tracks Holding On and No Matter What (featuring Mary J. Blige on background vocals) to Good News (a gospel track) to the title track and You Are My Joy (which Ree wrote and produced herself), there are too many genres on one album. And why did she include a reprise of You Are My Joy? It was unnecessary.

Overall, the album did not inspire me and after listening to it a few times, it left me empty. I hope Ree will make up for it in her next release. And Ree, please tone it down on the falsetto vocals.
