Album Description

"stars end" is an improvised 39 minute musical experiment that was recorded live from the WXPN radio studios in Philadelphia in November of 2004. September of 2004 - John Diliberto, host of the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes", invited us to perform live in the studio in Philadelphia for a special broadcast of his show. Jeff Towne engineered and Chuck Van Zyl from WXPN took photos. Afterwards, we drank wine and ate pasta in a small Italian restaurant nearby. After dinner The band performed an impromptu concert at the table. John, Jeff, and Chuck quickly joined us, along with our managers and other guests on spoons, glasses, wine bottles and vocals. Sound exploded everywhere as all the patrons and employees at the restaurant joined in the melee.

November of 2004 - Jeff and Chuck invited the band to perform for their concert series "The Gatherings," at St. Mary's Church in Philadelphia. Afterwards, Chuck invited the band back to WXPN studios to perform live on the air. We arrived late - 1:45 a.m. - after French food and battling traffic. Jeff rushed to set up microphones and connect wires. We drank wine with John Garaguso from Progressive Soundscape, our managers Karen Lee and Karen Doran, and other guests. We asked Chuck what we should play, and he gave us free reign. We improvised for an hour.

Stars End was recorded live on November 14th, 2004, at WXPN radio station in Philadelphia. The CD is titled after Chuck Van Zyl's show "Stars End" which has aired every Saturday night since 1976. It was engineered and mixed by Jeff Towne.

The recording is due in large part and dedicated to Chuck Van Zyl, Jeff Towne, John Diliberto, Karen Lee, Karen Doran, John Garaguso, Spencer Gordon and Jessica Shaw.

Instrumentation - electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, cello, harmonica, wine bottle, tibetan singing bowl, vocals, dinner bell, small gong, whistling

I was lucky enough to hear Blow Up Hollywood perform this improv live on the air in Philadelphia at its inception. Truly music to space out to. If you are into meditation, yoga or are just a deep thinker, this is for you. It's a treasure for fans of God Speed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky. If you're stressed out, you need this.

3 out of 5 stars very good musicians....but poor sound quality........2005-09-24

Very good musicians and playing, but the sound is very dissapointed. Like a bootleg...
    Dennis Chambers is phenomenal.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential p-funk.......2005-05-15

P-Funk put out a lot of live cd's, especially in recent years presumably to feed George & Co's crack habit... It's sad.

This cd is essential for three reasons:

    1. It's the only "professionally" recorded p-funk live cd. The others all sound like they're recorded through a couple of microphones in the back of the audience. This cd sounds superb!

    2. Dennis Chambers. Incredibly tight, funky drummer supercharging the entire band. Like "music fan" said, he 'works the high-hat so fast it'll make your head spin--all while stayin' in the pocket!' The same thing goes for the bass kicks!

    3. Cosmic Slop. OMG! Dennis Chambers, Eddie Hazel, Blackbyrd McKnight, Michael Hampton, Gary Shider, Bernie Worrell, p-funk horns, blasting on all levels.

Apart from that I have not much to add to bustin bob's review ('sizzling fonk').

5 out of 5 stars funk above and beyond the call of duty.......2005-05-03

the doctors RX was one the one,and the p-funk all star surgical team laid out one of the hottest funkiest live jams ever uncut. the funk is overwhelming dennis and skeets were in the zone and any one that calls themselves a funkateer that does not have this cd in their collection needs to relinquish their funk card immediately. funkamatosis to the nth degree

5 out of 5 stars Just for the Funk of it!!!.......2004-12-07

These two disc are by far the most potent Live experiences of punchy funk coming from the P Funk All-Stars that I've ever heard. From start to finish George Clinton and the gang serve up the funkiest and most provocative instrumentation and funk vocals on the planet. All beginning with an introduction by Maceo Parker that allows the crowd to realize just what they are in for as the band warms up to TEAR THE ROOF OFF THE SUCKER.

Dennis Chambers on Drums along with Rodney 'Skeet' Curtis on Bass serve as the foundation to a whole array of Funk that extends through a choir of shredding guitars, sharp horns, and one of a kind P Funk vocals. Dennis Chambers actually makes it sound like there is a percussionist along side him on this album, with his supreme drumming. The sound of this album is pure, raw, and punchy funk as there is not much out there on the market that can compare with this album. You can actually sense the profound chemistry and freedom that the band has as they work their way through these songs while jamming on the ONE.

Its impossible for me to pick a favorite song on this album. But I will say Cosmic Slop is the best I've heard outside of the album original. And Michael Hampton's solo on (Not Just)Knee Deep is super long and emotional as George instructs the band to "Keep going" just as it was coming to an end. Maggat Brain is spiritual in it's own way as you have to hear it to really grasp what I mean.

Thus, we can see clearly from this album that this Live experience was one in which the band had as much fun playing as I have listening to it over and over. A definite buy for any one that loves live funky music and profound instrumentation.

    5 out of 5 stars Funkin' Incredible!!!.......2004-06-15

The album is a melting pot of P-Funk originals that go on and on. This is a good thing. The mark of a fine band is when they can play live and just have FUN. Too many people want to hear their songs played exactly how they were done on the studio recordings, and they forget that the band likes to have fun too.

Dennis Chambers is already one of the world's best drummers, and he really let it shine in this recording. The synergy between him and the Bass Player was incredible. They were a fusion of Funk, and the gods were happy that night they played.

It's a FUN album. Clinton does his thing as does Maceo and Skeet. The crowd loved them, and they all had a blast. This makes for an incredible live album.

If you are looking for P-funk to be played exactly how you heard it in a studio recording, DO NOT buy this album. You won't like it. If you are open-minded and have a great sense of fun and love to explore the ins-and-outs of the artist and their music, then by all means buy this album. YOu will go on a journey of Funkadelic Mayhem that will leave you jonesing for more.

5 out of 5 stars The Doors Break on Through.......2005-04-04

"Live in Hollywood" features the absolute best of The Doors' Aquarius Theatre concerts from July 1969. The performances of "Back Door Man," "Break On Through," "When the Music's Over" and "Light My Fire" are superb. A few tracks were previously released on "Absolutely Live," but this CD compilation remains far superior. The professional sound quality surpasses the plethora of Doors bootlegs on the market.

3 out of 5 stars Find CD of ' Alive She Cried' instead.......2004-03-13

contains amazing version of 'Gloria', john sebastian joins doors on harmonica, on 'little red rooster' - you are tranported..wonderful.
Jim talks...that's all you really need...

3 out of 5 stars Good for casual fan, otherwise don't bother.......2003-06-22

This single disc takes highlights from the two separate double disc Aquarius sets released by Bright Midnight Records (through the Doors' website) in the past few years.

Die hard fans who want everything will go out and buy the two, complete concerts from Bright Midnight. If you don't want to spend, then this would be a good pickup. Just keep in mind you're hearing selections, not a complete show.

Of course, when it comes to releasing the same material in various forms as different products, the Doors have few rivals. (The Who come to mind). They release boxsets and then selection discs from boxsets, single and double disc best ofs and greatest hits.

Great music, just decide how much of it you want.

      3 out of 5 stars hard-core or moderate fan?.......2002-12-07

I'm a hard-core fan so i didn't spent my money on this cd, i bought the two complete concerts and the rehearsal. 3 double cds that contains all that's on this one and much more. Of course, if you're just a moderate fan, this is a great deal but for a hard-core fans who wants everything and more, buy the complete concerts direct from bright midnight records, otherwise, you would be greatly disppointed to find out that there are complete concerts available and that you just buy some excerpts of the concerts. A hard-core fans buys anything, to be one of them, you must have at least 10 bootlegs like i do.

      4 out of 5 stars Absolutely live.......2002-08-30

Originally recorded but not used for the album that became "Absolutely Live", this is a fine complete-concert record of the Doors as a legendary live band. The recording is excellent, the performances - for the most part - first-rate, the set list admirably broad, covering most of the albums through that date. As with any Doors concert recording there are some stretches of tedium where the visual element is missed, and a few tracks that run a bit too long. A welcome addition to any Doors collection, though.

The RBD marketing machine continues to churn, and hapless teens, young adults, and gay boys who should know better continue to feed it with money better spent on lip gloss and video games. Live in Hollywood is--gasp!--the second live offering from the co-ed pop group. It features 12 of the same songs included on 2005's equally tepid Nuestro Amor, only this time the studio trickery and pitch control are kept to a minimum. Woe to the listener. The vocals, both solo and as a group, are about as thin as a spider's web--and a lot less entertaining. Particularly off-key is red-headed member Dulce Maria, but in truth, it's awfully hard to tell them apart. For its part, the enthusiastic crowd screams at every entrance, every exit and pretty much every word--bless their hearts. In the hands of, well, singers, some of RBD's songs ("Este Corazon," "Solo Quedate En Silencio") would qualify as shameless pop fun. As it stands, however, RBD sucks the energy and soul out of everything their vocals come in contact with. 5 out of 5 stars everyone should listen.......2006-07-31

live in hollywood is great. no se puede cambiar nada. to all you haters out there, listen us and find a heart. RBD's songs talk about compassion and living life the way it is suppose to be lived; with love, happiness, freedom, and most importantly talent. the only reason people might not like this music is because they are into rap and uncool rock. RBD's music might have a rock twist to it but it is mostly pop. to all the haters out there, you think listening to music with cursing and sexist things is cool, wait till you listen to this music and then you'll know what cool really is. because just like what Dulce Maria's shirt say, LATINS DO IT BETTER. and that means that RBD does it better, and that is shown in all of RBD's cds and dvds including la novela Rebelde. no se meten en el mundo de idiotas, metense en el mundo de RBD!!!!!!!!!!!

Anahi, Alfonso,Dulce Maria,Chris,Mayte, Christian the people of RBD are really good as a group and have excellent voices. RBD Live in Hollywood is a good cd not for gays but for everybody!!!

      4 out of 5 stars RBD's live album #2.......2006-05-22

      RBD's live album #2

RBD: Live in Hollywood is the second live album for the group. A much better live album, although the first one (Tour Generacion RBD en vivo) and this one are very different. The first was in a much bigger stadium and you couldn't really focus on the music and the voices. This acoustic album is pretty good, although they should stop releasing them...2 live albums in less than a year? I know they want to get everything that there is from the fame that the group is having...but 2 is enough. The voices have improved and the way the music sounds is a lot better in most of the songs.

      1. Tras de mi- Great opening song. Anahi's voice sounds a little weird but it's ok considering that 2 weeks earlier she had an operation in the throat and could not even talk. The chorus sounds pretty good. 5/5
      2. Me voy- It's never been one of my favorite songs but it sounds ok. In the chorus you notice everybody's voices. 3/5
      3. Nuestro amor- I have to say that the original song its much better. They tried to turn an up beat song to a slow song and that didn't really work. Christopher's voice has never been the best of the group but in this song he sounds really weird. I truly didn't like It but it still a good song. 3/5
      4. Así soy yo- If you hear the original version you'll notice that the lyrics are totally different, I mean, they are the same but in different order. Anahí had a mess and forgot most of the song but it turned out to be better than the original. The chorus was pretty cool with the gospel chorus. And although Anahi forgot the lyrics she handled it pretty well. At some point in the song she says: "I always forget the song's lyrics!" and at the end "I am zero problems and have a great ass". She is crazy and thanks to that, this song is good. 4/5
      5. Que fue del amor- In the original CD, I believe this song was the one that you couldn't get out of your mind specially the "que fue del amor que un dia nos unio?". Great live song. Christian, Maite and Poncho sing it really well. 5/5
      6. A tu lado- Worst song in the original CD, in this CD, THE BEST. Wow, I was completely shocked. When you here it you can imagine the guys sing in it right next to you. The boys sing it beautifully. 5/5
      7. No pares- the only new track of the album. The lyrics are simple but good. It has a great message: "Never stop dreaming, don't be afraid of flying, live your life". Dulce sings it alone and she demonstrates why is she one of the most important voices of the group. 5/5
      8. Fuera- They turned a rock song into a "salsa" song with some other sounds. It's a pretty good song but I think I prefer the more rockish version. 4/5
      9. Solo para ti- Too up beat. It's a nice song but the original it's much much better. 3/5
      10. Este corazón -I have love this song so no matter how you put it I'll always like it. I think the original version is better but still it's one of the best songs of the CD. 5/5
      11. Aun hay algo- BEUTIFULL!! The violins sound great. They slowed the song a little bit and it sounds more personal more like a ballad. 5/5
      12. Que hay detrás- Good but not great. In the chorus, the gospel sounds super. The original version is better. 4/5
      13. Feliz cumpleaños- Crazy song. I like it but it is not the song that you'll remember from this album. 4/5
      14. Solo quedate en silencio (Hollywood version)- It's RBD's greastest hit so they had to sing it. It's an Studio version of the song but acoustic. It's good. If you compare the original one to this one, you will like them both but they are completely different. 5/5
      15. No pares (Studio version)- The live version it's much better. This one is more upbeat. 3/5

      5 out of 5 stars Good live/acoustic cd.......2006-04-05

I just bought this cd and I've listened to it once but I have to say, it is such a great live album! I really love the acoustic versions of the songs because it emphasizes the group's voices. A lot of people have said that the singers in RBD don't have good voices but I think anyone that listens to this cd will see that they have talent and lots of it. I especially loved the song "No Pares." I hadn't heard it before but it was a nice extra song and Dulce did a good job with this song. Overall I would recommend this cd to any RBD fans. It's basically the Nuestro Amor cd unplugged but it is great anyways!

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

          1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
