On their full-length debut, Denver quartet the Fray don't exactly reinvent the wheel, but those looking for melodic, mid-tempo pop could do far worse. That said, the 12 songs on Top 40 hit How To Save a Life are barely distinguishable from each other. If you like one, you'll probably like the rest (and you'll be in the company of thousands of other listeners.) If you don't like one, it's unlikely the others will change your mind. Formed in 2002 and signed by Epic in 2004, the band consists of Isaac Slade (vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, vocals), Ben Wysocki (drums), and Dave Welsh (guitar). Since their formation, the Fray have elicited comparisons to British groups like Coldplay and Keane, and American ones like Counting Crows and the Wallflowers. They've also toured with Weezer and Ben Folds and had songs--like first single "Over My Head (Cable Car)"--featured on such popular programs as Grey's Anatomy. Though they incorporate guitar, unlike Keane, Slade's expert piano playing is prominent on every track. To his credit, he can also hit the high notes just as gracefully as Coldplay's Chris Martin, but therein lies the rub: As with the band as a whole, Slade hasn't quite found his own voice yet. How To Save a Life is polished and professional, bland and inoffensive. It goes down easy, but evaporates into the ether just as quickly. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

By now, most people who listen to alternative rock have heard of these guys. If you are reading this, then you want to know "Do I really want this album?". I think if you like the genre of music a lot (like Coldplay, Blue October, Keane), the go ahead and give this album a try. If you just like one of their songs, consider downloading that song and a couple more (chose from tracks 1 - 6 for more upbeat melodies and after for slower ones). The album tended to grow on me but is still not one I listen too all that often because of many of the songs sounding very similar.
Over and over again.......2007-06-16
I heard "Over MY Head" on a TV cable series, found it catchy, and wanted to find out who recorded it. After an eventful personal odyssey, I finally discovered this. Unfortunately my journey was a wasted effort. HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, the debut album for this piano-based-sounding group (from Denver-if that has any significance), is pleasant enough, that is, on first listening, but it is clearly superficial and soon becomes redundant. The enticing single "Over My Head" does have an entertaining chorus and a memorable refrain that makes nice use of the cable car metaphor. The majority of the other compositions on this album, however, sound as if they were manufactured by a cookie cutter song machine. Indeed, I don't think I recall ever hearing selections that were so much alike: they use a very (VERY) similar musical structure, are almost identical in studio production, and follow the same form- opening with an understated verse which then moves speedily to a chorus (that sounds like the chorus of the previous song) and repeats ala loop to make the statement. A slight exception might be the title track "How To Save A Life" (apparently among those heard on Grey's Anatomy) with its delicate piano intro and tender ballad-like message or "She Is" which demonstrates a bit of a driving rhythm. But even those do not stray too far away from the mold. They both, for example, still employ the same repetitious chorus device (in fact, when I was listening to "How to Save A Life" I thought it was "Over My Head."). The rest aren't even worth comment other than to say they are undistinguished. At best, they are derivative in content (borrowing from other vanilla-type ensembles) which nonetheless still does not excuse their own absence of variety. Likewise, the lead singer's voice, reminiscent perhaps of David Gray's, fits the tone of "Over My Head," but by the time you hear its whining character on two or three of the other tracks [incidentally- NOT like David Gray], you may want to be rescued from the experience. The continued exposure will either annoy you or put you to sleep.
To the point, this first album for The FRAY indicates that the group understands the concept of formula far too well. They should appreciate, however, that comfortable and familiar often leads very quickly to boring. With that in mind, most, if not all, of this can be thrown in the waste bin unless you are looking for sounds that will induce deep slumber. To be honest, its most salient feature is monotony. It is unobtrusively bland and shallow, with little evidence of either creative or original effort.
very listenable tracks.......2007-06-04
I spend most of my time in Europe, so I don't get too much exposure to up and coming bands. By chance on a recent trip home I heard The Fray on one of the 'Top 40' programs. I liked what I heard, sampled a few tracks online, and bought the music. While I might agree with the numerous reviews that say many of the Fray's songs sound similar, I still enjoy them. I recommend giving a listen to the Fray and look forward to seeing what comes next from them.

Carol King's album, Tapestry, is a spiritual journey through time. I used the song, You've Got a Friend, to devote to my husband during our wedding and it has always been my favorite song. It really tells the truth about life and how love from someone can get us through the difficulties of life. If You Lead I Will Follow, is a personal song from me to someone I love very much as is, I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet. The lyrics are timeless and classic. James Taylor totally agrees with me!!!
Simple, Complex, and Brilliant.......2007-07-26
Carole King is more than just the voice of a generation. She is a voice in the wilderness of modern music. She does not draw attention to herself, but attention to every single person who listens to the albulm. This is a personal album in so many ways. Carole King does not have the attitude that most of the artists of her generation have and that is why this collection of songs will be around for many many more years.

Classics get to be classics...............................2007-06-11
........for a reason. This is generally considered to be one of the very greatest albums ever. It is. Carole King wrote and sang the songs of my generation. She and Carly Simon made the music that pretty much defines the baby-boomer years. There is little point in discussing individual songs...we've all felt the earth move, followed her lead, and been glad that she sings of being our friend. If ever a girl was a natural woman...she is, indeed, a beautiful tapestry.
The sound and the songs remain fresh and new, and the pure joy as great as ever. There are very few albums that everybody really ought to have....this one heads the list.

An Oscar win might suggest a score that would need a miracle to be bettered--but this colorful stage adaptation of Disney's The Lion King does so with flair. Composers Mark Mancina and Lebo M worked closely together to fuse the movie's many disparate elements. Where there was a veritable army exercising creative influences for the animated tale, this brings it all under the wings of a like-minded few. This is genuinely apparent as one track flows into the next. The African rhythms--both vocal and in instrumentation--come across as authentic and original all at once. No doubt this is largely through Mancina's passion for peculiar instruments and the possibilities suggested from nightly live performances. "Grasslands Chant" is a good place to hear this. The hit favorites are here of course, but both "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are pleasingly unrecognizable with chorus and shifting beats. Better still is the likelihood they will now be eclipsed by some of the new numbers. Mancina's own "He Lives in You" being a strong contender. With a sound mix as crisp as you'd hope to find, this is rousing stuff. --Paul Tonks

Choose this one over the movie soundtrack..........2007-06-28
I bought this cd after seeing the show on broadway. If you like the African-influenced music present in the movie version of the Lion King, all of the original is present here as well as some really good new stuff. My favorite of the new songs is "Shadowland", which really just takes some recognizable background music from the movie and adds lyrics to it. other standouts include "He Lives in You", which you may have heard if you saw The Lion King 1 1/2, and the song Simba sings after his father has died.
I took off one star because I am not a fan of the singer portraying Scar in this recording, and I don't like most of his songs or those the hyenas sing. But the excellence of everthing else makes up for it.

We had just gone to NY in March 07 and saw the play live. The CD is just as beautiful and the music brings tears to my eyes. My five year old knows all the words. We play it on the way to school and back everyday. He particularly likes "I just can't wait to be King".

This soundtrack is just as breathtaking as watching the musical and brings back all of the memories of NYC! This is the original cast recording, so if you've seen the production recently, most of the actors aren't the same; just keep that in mind.

"I've Been Here And I've Been There/ And I've Been In Between".......2007-07-20
One can only imagine what it was like to hear King Crimson's debut album back in 1969 (unless you're at least 38 years old, I guess. Okay, I probably I could have picked a better sentence to start this review. Moving on...). In the Court of the Crimson King was a bold, dramatic statement, an uncomprimising record that seamlessly combined hard rock (in the 60s sense of the word. Think Blue Cheer and Cream) with psychedelia and elements of jazz and high-minded poetic grandeur. The eye-popping cover art and suite-style song structures sealed the deal, and a new style of music was born: Progressive rock. Indeed, just about every act that has ever been labled "prog," from Pink Floyd to Yes to Jethro Tull and onward through the likes of Radiohead and the Mars Volta can trace the basis of their sound back to the 'Crim's first record. Robert Fripp's slashing guitar chords and nimble melodies bridged the gap between hevy metal and art rock (before either style was really a full-fledged genre, Black Sabbath and the Velvets notwithstanding), while multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald gave the music a jazzy, textured complexity, weather he was playing the flute, the vibes, or the mellotron, and Greg Lake's vocals were quintessential prog: Technically acomplished, dramatic, and high-minded. Michael Giles' drumming picked up where Fripp's guitar left off, spanning the (not all that wide) space between rock and jazz. Topping the whole shebang off were Peter Sinfield's lyrics, which were abstract and poetic in the extreme, a set of textures and images rather than coherent statements.
But you probably want to know if the music's good. Well, here's the deal: No matter how good a progressive rock band is (and believe me, King Crimson were very, very good), they (pretty much) inevitably succumb to a few pitfalls. The most common is pretention. On this particular record, the most obvious victim of that malady is "Epitaph." The song's eight minutes don't produce a single memorable melody, and Sinfield's lyrics are obtuse in the extreme. They amble through a series of references to men being "torn apart/ with nightmares and with dreames" and "the iron gates of fate" without producing a single good line. It doesn't help that Lake seems to think he's singing scripture, stuffing each sylable with forced drama and unreasonably present passion. The song does have a sort of lumbering majesty (created, pretty much, by sheer force of will), but it's far from a classic. And its typically bloated length insures that it'll overstay its welcome. And then there's the notorious "Moonchild," which features a ten-minute instrumental "freak-out" section, the only truly interesting aspect of which is its odd quietness. Otherwise, it's every bit as overblown and indulgent as the very worst of 60s sound "experiments."
Otheer than that, though, this is a really great listen. My personal favorite track is the achingly beautiful "I Talk To The Wind," a haunting dreamscape with some of Sinfield's most poignant lyrics. The chorus shows off the subtleties of Lake's considerable voice, as he twists his vocal chords over and around the words, enunciating them with an uncanny grace and power. Good stuff. In a similar vein, the first two minutes or so of "Moonchild" (pre freak-out) are a gorgeous accoustic rumination, full of imagery and joyous sound. Of course, there's also the eternal "21st Century Schizoid Man," which foreshadows Rush, only without the nerdiness. Fripp's brutal, slashing bar chords fuse with McDonald's white-hot trumpet and Giles' thundering drums to form the ideal bed for one of Lake's most uncharacteristic and awesome vocal performances ever. He spits pure venom, snarling the lyrics (a rush of fiery, apocalyptic imagery) with menace and boundless energy. The song then breaks off into an awesome intrumental section, which sees Fripp and McDonald spitting melodies at eachother. It's a lava-spewing jam that dazzles the listener with its polymelodic ferocity, its shape shifting intensity. Crank it up, dude. And then there's the title track, which closes the proceedings with a burst of endearing bombasm (that is almost certainly not a word, but I can't think of a noun form of "bombastic") and shape-shifting insanity.
So, the end result is one of the coolest debuts of the sixties, a fantastic rock album, an introduction to some really gifted musicians, and the Rosetta Stone of prog. Neat!
Whimsical Progresive Rock.......2007-07-17
The debut album of King Crimson is one of their finest (though not their best; see Red if you want their top recording). This is the only Crimson album that features Greg Lake (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fame) on lead vocals. Although there are only five tracks, each one is rather lengthy and showcases the hallmarks of progressive rock as a whole.
My favorite two tracks are 21st Century Schizoid Man and The Court of the Crimson King, the first and last tracks respectively. Both are epic progressive songs, and are essential for any progressive rock fan; well worth the price of admission for this album.
Back in the day.......2007-06-28
I had a fairly adequate stereo which was centered on a Thorens transcription turntable with an excellent stylus. It always cheered me up to hear this album played at moderate to somewhat loud volume levels. I won't get into the progressive rock chicken and egg debate, for I also appreciate many of the other groups mentioned but KC has a very special place in my hierarchy of rock bands. They made several other good recordings, again duly noted in several reviews but I always have liked this one the best.
For those who have not heard this I would suggest attempting to hear part of it at least prior to buying as I realize this particular genre of rock can be considered an acquired taste.
Sophisticated progressive rock!.......2007-06-24
I knew this album of course before buying it, but it really amazes you when you listen to the whole thing song by song in your home stereo.
Let me join in the chorus of praise for this album, one of the greatest prog rock albums ever...........2007-06-12
This is arguably one of the greatest debuts in rock history (alongside The Velvet Underground and Nico). It is an almost perfect album, a feat that doesn't happen very often. Every song is so beautifully written, crafted, sequenced, and performed by some of the greatest musicians the rock world has ever heard or seen. The starter, 21st Century Schizoid Man, is amazingly intricate. It's one of the best songs from Crimson's library, and the middle section is blistering in its intensity. The quieter songs (just about the rest of the album) are so mellow, moving, and haunting, with lyrics (courtesy of prog rock's greatest lyricist, Pete Sinfield) that still hold up today. There are only 5 songs on the album (all running epic length), but they're pretty much perfect. The only one that gives me a slight problem is Moonchild. The last 10 minutes of the song (after a beautiful introduction) are kind of aimless. But then, maybe a few more listens, and the song will finally kick in. This is one of my favorite albums ever.

The 56th album by the 73-year-old godfather of British blues is a tribute to one of his major influences, the late Texas-born guitarist Freddie King. It's also a nod to current Bluesbreakers picker Buddy Whittington, an underrated pyrotechnician who follows a long line of distinguished six-string Mayall sidemen that includes Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Coco Montoya, and Walter Trout. Whittington measures up, recreating the terse energy of King's biting, blunt phrasing on the legend's classic "Going Down" and the swinging "You Know That You Love Me." And he puts his own grinding, slashing brand on the riff 'n' rip guitar of "The Palace of the King," a biographical tune Don Nix, Leon Russell, and Duck Dunn wrote for King. Guest guitarist Robben Ford lends his own instrumental King homage, "Cannonball Shuffle," but it's Mayall's piano-led "King of the Kings" that's most touching. John Mayall, the "Godfather of British Blues", returns with the Bluesbreakers for his latest studio album "In The Palace Of The King". This new album is John's tribute to one of his blues heroes, the late, great Freddie King. King was a blues guitar pioneer from the mid-50's through to his tragically early death in the mid-70's and he influenced everyone from Peter Green to DaveEdmunds to Stevie Ray Vaughan and probably most of all Eric Clapton, who produced and played on King's final album. "In The Palace Of The King" features John Mayall's take on his personal selection of Freddie King favorites and is a fabulous combination of two true blues legends.

Stuck in a time warp..........2007-07-25
This CD is reminiscent of the John Mayall recordings from the 60's and 70's...in fact it sounds like the same recordings remixed. The best song on here is Big Legged Woman, and it is only OK with further listenings. The rest sounds like it is 40 years old, and not in a good way.

Superb Musicianship, tight arrangements, so what's wrong?
If you're new to the work of the great Freddie King, consider
investing a few bucks in the real deal. Most of Freddie
King's best work is still in print, e.g., "Getting Ready" or "Texas
Cannonball". His soaring vocals and wicked guitar phrasing are
like comparing a fine whiskey to this...I don't know...lemonade?
I found the tracks with Mayall singing (most of them), immediately
annoying. His straining, thin and unconvincing vocals pretty much
derail most of the material, which is too bad considering this is
a lineup of musicians with talent to burn. The "jump the shark"
moment - Mayall doing the line about not being able to "get a chitlin'
pizza at any price I pay...". I've never been a big Mayall fan as his
elephant sized ego always seems to intrude into his material and often
push it into the realm of precious and pretentious.
This is a John Mayall CD that happens to cover Freddie King material.
If you're a Mayall fan you'll probably like it.

Another great album from the British Father of the Blues. Albert King is one of my favorite performers, and Mayall does him justice. I've yet to find a Mayall album I didn't like, although some weren't as strong as others, this is a very good listen.

Good album, but not as good as THE PUPPET MASTER.......2007-07-26
I must say it took me about 2 songs to get into this one, but by THE CELLAR, I was hooked. LaRoque shreds on this album similar to the glory days of 87-93, but I hated the fact KD didn't give us the grand falsetto that I feel we all miss.
That being said, it's still a great listen. Second best of KD's this decade with THE PUPPET MASTER way out in front. But you'll love this one as well. Keep rocking KING!

King Diamond has released another great album "Give Me Your Soul Please" is an excellent follow up to "The Puppet Master". With great riffs and a creepy as HELL storyline, The King has found magic again, let's hope there is more twisted tails to come.
A Masterpiece.......2007-07-20
The King has done it again!
King's command of his voice is more controlled than it has ever been in his career. The story line is as good for conjuring up images in the imagination as ever.
The guitar work is just as inspirational as it was since Fatal Portrait but with a maturity that allows Andy and Mike to hit the sweet spots regularly.
The rhythm section is groovin with Hal putting down some very memorable bass lines.
The production makes me ever so glad these guys are able to have control over their recordings since Puppet Master. You can hear everything. The sound is warm. I would love to hear the album 'Them' re-recorded with Andy's mobile studio.
The true greatness is that all of these points, while they stand on their own, don't just stand by themselves. They mix together in a greater blend that makes this album one that gets replayed again and again, not only through the speakers but in your head as well.
More Tales Of Gothic Menace From The King.......2007-07-08
King Diamond has really created his own distinct style and genre, and in a playing field with no other contenders, he reamains the King indeed. King Diamond albums have been something I look forward to since I was 13 or so, when I first heard "Them". Bizarre, gothic and dark concept albums featuring the phenomenal classic metal guitar work of Andy LaRocque and others and, of course, King Diamond's incomparable caterwauling vocals and sinister storytelling, there is nothing else quite like it.
"Give Me Your Soul Please" is no exception, and an excellent addition to King's canon, his latest tale of the supernatural involves murder, suicide, a ghostly apparition of a little girl in a bloody dress, a black cat, and a floating severed head. So, business as usual. (laughs) I always love the way King assumes the voices of different characters in his stories in an almost theatrical manner, and the eerie music and amazing, intese riffs and solos laid out on this release by Mike Wead and Andy LaRocque are just sick....I had a blast with this disc, but for other King fans it is perhaps a bit weaker than some of his other releases (although it is hard to top the trifecta of "Them", "Conspiracy" and "The Eye", which remain my favorite). For folks who are new to the King, this really isn't a bad place at all to start. Be sure to listen all the way through, preferably in one sitting (the only proper way to listen to a King Diamond album). In a crowded metal scene, this stuff really comes off as being quite original....recommended!
From beyond the grave..........2007-07-07
Another splendid musical horror novel from King Diamond, the little girl in the bloody dress comes through the mirror, uncertain about her state of being... the introductory song "Dead" is laden with mood-setting organ, haunting voices explaining the basics of the disturbing plot, dealing with a little brother and sister who were murdered by their father, but are scheduled for different destinations "after death" - it is up to her to save him from Hell, after being accused by "the powers that be" of suicide. She reveals the true circumstances of their demise - to set the terms "right" so they may 'rest in peace' together, presumably in "Heaven", although 'demons' pine for both their 'souls' in this supernatural adventure / thriller concept album.
The album features the spectral voice of Livia Zita, whom you may recognize from 'The Puppet Master' as well, adding an enchanting compliment to the music as well as storyline. Besides the intricate Metal instrumentation, cellos and the harpsichord are included, adding an eerie feel to the brilliant orchestration.
Of particular note, My personal favorites herein are "Dead" {the 'gothic' horror instrumental}, "Give Me Your Soul" {really displays the talent and skill of the band}, "Shapes of Black" {great beat and harmony; one can actually relate to these occurrences, environment, and denizens}, "Cold As Ice" {the cold temperature in the dark room even in remmus}, "Girl In The Bloody Dress" {the rhythms and correlations of voices}, and "Moving On" {the hypnotically-melancholy quality and voice combinations} .
The aesthetics are predictably wonderfully ornate, of course featuring the band, and one Magic, King's black cat familiar, perceiving the ghost as familiars are said to sense. It was also gratifying to see the band dressed in black robes within, each signalling the Cornu, adding a most evocatively mystical impression. King promises a Hell of a show to accompany this chapter as well, repleat with horror psychodrama.
Overall, 'Give Me Your Soul... Please' is definitely one of King's best.

It sounds like the beginning of a story: "So, Slowhand and the King of the Blues were riding in a car ..." If this is a musical journey, it's the kind that rolls down long, empty stretches of country highway at 80 miles an hour, with the top down and the stereo blasting. Clapton and King may be more city than country, but this collection has the relaxed, laid-back feel that only comes from a pair of veterans doing what they do best. What they do here is cover 12 classic blues songs, many of them staples of King's repertoire, so the title of this album makes sense. If you love the Blues you have to have this cd. These 2 guys are the best in the business. They do not compete with each other. They simply make beautiful music as a team. With some new albums I have to play them a few times so they can grow on me. Not this time. I fell in love with it the first time I played it. Claptons band is there with them and that just makes it that much better. The only thing I think I could enjoy more is to see them together on stage. Who knows! Stranger things have happened. Buy this cd and buy it now!!

This is a good solid blues CD, with songs varying from toe tapping to mellow. This pairing of performers, was certainly more beneficial for Clapton, than for King. Even at BB's age, his voice is smoother, than Clapton's. As mentioned earlier, there is a full spectrum of songs, ending with the silky smooth, old classic, "Come Rain Or Come Shine".

I'm really glad my mom turned me on to bb king when I saw a kid, I owe her.
Just buy the cd, make up your own mind. Yes, it's a polished piece, perhaps overproduced; they have the bucks, the studio and the talent - who can blame them for making the cuts the way THEY wanted?
You and I certainly can't do it and that's why I'm gratfeful BB and EC did do it. It's a shame it's over so quick however.

The Album Riding With the King has some really fantastic blues songs but is lacking the elements that would make this album worth buying. The 12 songs are all repetative and dull; they should have put some classic blues songs like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman". You would think two notorious classic blues guitar artists would collaborate to make a better album. Spend the extra money and buy Eric Claptons live album "One More Car, One More Rider", its worth the money.This album definatly didnt meet my expectations. But what do you expect from a guy who refuses to play chords.

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

This collection rightly concentrates on Dale's instrumental exploits as the Jimi Hendrix of surf music. Nineteen sixty-one's "Let's Go Trippin'" was the first real surf instrumental, although the pyrotechnic fretwork of later Dale records is largely absent. Those divebomb runs, reverb drenchings, and impossibly quick picking displays materialize on the next single, "Shake & Stomp," then bloom on the revved-up Middle-Eastern standard "Misirlou." Dale's instrumentals generally fell into two camps: standard-progression frat blasts ("Take It Off," "Night Rider," "Mr. Eliminator") and minor-key Middle-Eastern excursions ("The Wedge," the "Pipeline"-esque "Banzai Wipeout," "The Victor," even "Hava Nagila"--which Jewish purists must have regarded as a hora of Babylon), on which his blistering technique was more likely to find its spotlight Some of his best work is found on "King of the Surf Guitar," a Duane Eddy knockoff with great vocals by the Blossoms garnished by lightning flashes of boss guitar. With all the dazzling axe-work on display (also including a beautiful 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays' unearthly "Pipeline"), the coolest cut here may be the sole vocal, "Mr. Peppermint Man," on which Dale's rasp oozes a concupiscent slime over the murky tale of a lollipop Lothario who "carries a little sign that says, Have some dessert." Dick Dale was the Pioneer..........2007-05-31
I knew of Dick Dale's more well known tunes, his first "Let's go tripping" & "Misirlou", but the lesser known tracks are quite good. It demonstrates Dale's growth from his first to the "Pipeline" remake. The tracks are pretty much layed out on chronological order, and that's good.
His style is all over this cd, no mistaking it. He's described as "High Energy", and I'm not a fan of harsh surf - some of that here, but all good.
I recommend this cd for surf tune lovers and how surf all started with Dick Dale.

Dick Dale was left-handed, yet didn't reverse the strings on his guitar. His technique is most accurately described as electrified mandolin that was augmented in 1962 with a portable Fender reverb unit. He is widely considered the father of surf music and there's no denying that those who came after Dale used his music as a starting point.
The Del-Tones never had a hit record in their time; not even "Misrilou" made much of a splash (forgive the pun). That song and Dale enjoyed a sort of notoriety 30 years after the track's release thanks to the film PULP FICTION. It was featured in the movie's opening credits.
In comparison to the surf music that followed in Dick Dale's wake (pun again), his stuff had more energy perhaps, but it just wasn't as good. Dale had a penchant for reworking tunes to his style that probably should have been left alone-- "The Wedge," "Riders In The Sky" and "Hava Nagila" are good examples of this.
The last selection, "Pipeline," features Stevie Ray Vaughan, and was recorded in 1987. RHINO did a fine job of remastering the older sides, and their liner notes are informative. THE BEST OF DICK DALE & HIS DEL-TONES is a collection that will appeal most to surf music completists, and historians of the "California Sound."

A Great Album but not easy listening music . . . ........2007-02-17
I am more partial to metal and hard rock, but Dick Dale is great! The first man to blow up amps and melt guitar picks. He used to start with a handful and flick them off into to audience.
Most of the tracks are a good cross section of the times; has artist as well as studio written and produced tracks. If you are interested in pre-Beach Boys 'surf guitar', this is one to get.
Most people will recognize Banzai Wipeout, but there are some 'studio produced' tracks as well that Dale was forced to record. They are insipid, but a good contrast to the artist's material. Dale wanted to see what he could do with a traditional melody, Hava Nagila has to be experienced . . . .its a great revenge track for all the boring whiny gangsta rap you hear in the summer.

I've owned this particular CD for years, but I have been kind of reluctant to review it. Y'see, to me, Dick Dale is kind of like the Tao; "the Tao that is spoken about, is not the Tao..." The Dick dale that I speak about is not really Dick Dale.
Dick Dale needs to be experienced in order to be appreciated. I can't explain his music. It's kind of primal, kind of tribal, it's kind of raw and will gnaw at your gut for hours after listening to it. It takes a "different kind" of soul to not only listen to Dick Dale, but appreciate him. This isn't said out of arrogance, it's just said out of a knowing that not everybody will like him just like not everyone likes the Mills Brothers...

He is truly amazing. I saw him in concert a few times, but I remember one time he was playing so fast and so furious that he broke a guitar string in the middle of a jam session. Big deal you say? What would you say if I told you he changed that guitar string while he was playing it? He had a stage hand hold the guitar, while he changed the string with his left hand and played with his right. You wouldn't even believe how thunderous the applause was after that happened.
Every time I've seen him, I've been "deaf" for days. I've never left a Dick Dale concert without somehow changing in some way. He's like a Shaman, a wizard, an alchemist. He can transform the ordinary into something pure and golden. He is truly one of the world's greatest (and most overlooked) musicians.
He is the King.
So, buy this album. It's a great little starter and after you learn to appreciate this album, go to another, and another, until you'll finally be able to say, "Wow, I really do know Dick..."

Though the uptempo "Wrecking Ball" shows that King Wilkie can function just fine as a straightforward bluegrass band, most of the music by the acoustic Virginia sextet draws more from classic rock and vintage country, and particularly from the influences where the two converge. The harmonies of "Millie's Song" recall those of the Everly Brothers, "Savannah" sounds like one of the Band's evocations of the American South, the singalong "Crazy Daisy" and the atmospheric insistence of "Stone & Steel" suggest the Byrds of the same era, and the honky-tonk shuffle of "Angeline" draws from the country side of the Rolling Stones. Yet bittersweet ballads such as "Rockabye (Farewell Lonesome Dove)" and "Captivator" are the sort of material that could fit just fine on country radio. Do yourself a favor and buy/download/share this album. Best so far of 2007, and combines influences such as the beach boys, the byrds, stones, simon/garfunkel. But the voices here (both literal and lyrical) set them apart as their own. They aren't a bluegrass band, or a country band, or any other "kind" of band - they're just King Wilkie.
oh, and see them live in small venues while you still can.

Playing Time - 42:48 -- From Charlottesville, Virginia, King Wilkie has a new contemporary Americana sound. Named for Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe's favorite horse, the band's easy-going acoustic jaunt in this set is more of a canter than a gallop. Rather than high lonesome bluegrass, King Wilkie's "Low Country Suite" gives us a soothing folk-pop sound with rootsy feeling and earthy lilt. Striving for a more personal musical statement than traditional bluegrass afforded them, their approach has come to emphasize life experiences, their individual strengths and personal influences.
Initially formed in 2002 by Ted Pitney (guitar) and Reid Burgess (mandolin), these two graduates of Kenyon College in Ohio moved to Virginia to start a bluegrass band. The rest of the group includes Abe Spear (banjo), Drew Breakey (bass), Nick Reeb (fiddle), and John McDonald (guitar). In 2003, King Wilkie signed with Rebel Records. In 2004, they won IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year Award. In 2005, their thoughtful melody-driven songs began marking an evolution of their musical makeover. The compositions on "Low Country Suite" are a number of pleasantly smooth movements that take us on a breezy jaunt through nostalgic, romantic or placid emotions. With some understated lap steel, organ, piano, harmonica or percussive embellishment in the mix, the set's result is one of mostly serene, laid-back imagery. "Angeline" is one of the more raucous offerings, with a hint of 1970s folk rock tonality. With its raw emotion and gritty realism, "Wrecking Ball" is a wild, thrilling ride with old-time spirit. "She's a wrecking ball coming through my wall so tall, like a house of straw these beautiful dreams will fall ....." The slow swing and bright lyricism of "Ms. Peabody" also provides some nice diversity to a mostly ethereal set mainly about "restlessness, coming of age, loss of innocence." The themes of absolution and liberation are clearly stated in "Captivator."
Produced by Jim Scott, an objective of "Low Country Suite" was to capture the band's own pioneering spirit in a manner reminiscent of the Byrds, Gram Parsons, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, or Bob Dylan. "King Wilkie creates their own genre of music -- a beautiful, true and honest sound," Scott once said. It's a lofty goal, and King Wilkie demonstrates both the aptitude and confidence to make a significant mark. The band now has the support of the reputable Rounder label, and I commend them for their flexibility, adaptability and relaxed sophistication. Thirty years from now, "Low Country Suite" may not be looked at as their defining work that established King Wilkie as an irresistible, clarion voice, but it certainly is a genuine, relaxed, good-time vibe full of alluring radiance and emotional pathos from their collective gut.
