    Product Description

The Godfather of Soul appointed himself the Minister Of New New Super Heavy Funk for this 1975 release, and it was subtitled Disco Soul (if thats not entirely an oxymoron). This disc catches the hardest working man in show business in a transitional phase, as he slides his patented funk into a brand new, sequin-encrusted, spandex bag. Brown was in one of the most prolific phases of his recording career when this album was recorded, as he released seven(!) albums in 1975-76. Always keenly aware of changing public taste, JB embraced the new dance movement eagerly, even to the point of putting out a disc called Everybodys Doin The Hustle & Dead On The Double Bump, which they were, if only for just about as long as it took to play that album. The album resonated more keenly in the urban community than it did in mainstream pop culture; it managed to get to number 10 on the Black Album chart, while it didnt quite break the upper half of the Pop Album chart, topping out at 103. In fact, this was Browns last top ten charting album to date. Remarkably, he notched three top 25 albums in 1975, despite critics claims that he was beginning to repeat himself. One slight shortcoming of the CD version of this album is that it cannot reproduce at full size the unique typography for the words Sex Machine as seen in the original 12 x 12 artwork. But it still sounds great.

    4 out of 5 stars lost 1975 record.......2007-05-01

I was so plesed when I first heard that Hip-O-Select are prepare to put this 1975 LP to cd. I expected the best. Earlier I heard "I feel good 1975" or "Problems" on Make it funky compilation and the quality of these tracks produced by Fred Wesley was very big for me.
First letdown is that the lp package has no liner notes. Thats really shame because i think that year 1975 was one of most creative and interesting in J.B.'s sound. The second is not so good sound quality of this cd. Japanese imports from p-vine has mostly better sound quality and i gave only 2 stars for it. Shame.
What is undeniable, this is music quality. JB said he was run out of ideas in this heavy funk period, but i love all these remakes of his old hits.Second part "Sex Machine"is really treasure. I love "Deep in it" with his hard driving guitar and I think that Alicia Keys used this sample in her song produced by Timbaland.
Overall i give 4 stars and I ask music record companies to release other 1975 album "Everybody's doin the hustle, dead on the double bump" best in reedition with Sex Macvhine today album on one disc...

5 out of 5 stars I sure 'nough feel good!.......2007-04-14

This had to be one of my favorite James Brown albums. I'm glad they finally released it on CD. The version of 'I feel good' has to be the funkiest ever! Even though some of the tracks are 12 minutes of jamming, they are just outtakes of even longer jams. This is just some incredible Funk.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Williams is THE MAN.......2005-08-17

boy, you just can't get any funkier nowadays then the stuff that's laid down on this CD. Buy it!. You will definitely get your money's worth. If you like Howlin' Wolf, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Captain Beefheart, then you will appreciate this music.

4 out of 5 stars Number one album to listen to while intoxicated........2000-11-01

Man, I love this record. It's the voice. I could just about care less as to the indie rock credibility he's gained by playing w/ Blues X, Compulsive Gamblers, etc. and with the Beck-like production to boot. The godfather sings like he is quite literally losing his mind. He screams like he wants the devil to come out of his body. Imagine Joe Cocker in the body of Howling Wolf on some major amphetamines in a padded room. Simple arrangements with nods to punk, surf, metal and soul permeate the background for Mr. Williams, Esq's blow torch vocals, intimations on adultery, drug-dealing, stripping, and just being a godfather. One last thing, play this album late at night with an equal amount of drunk men and women in the same room. Fun.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Williams IS the godfather!.......2000-07-01

It's a tough task for 65 year old Mr. Williams to follow up his astonishing comeback "Silky", but he's done just that - ten fold. This album finds Andre backed by a number of different garage/punk/blues king pins including the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. This album has more of a soul/funk feel to it than "Silky" which was more of a straight garage record. This album is also louder and less lo-fi than "Silky" while still maintaining a crude, raw sound. Songs like "I Wanna Go Back To Mexico" come closer to bridging the gap between the sound of his old Fortune Records recordings and the modern garage sound of his current label In The Red than anything on "Silky". Also, this album has hands-down one of the best album covers ever - a hilarious send up of the whole No Limit/Hip Hop style. Album of the year on the only rock n' roll label that still matters!

    5 out of 5 stars MR.RHYTHM IS KING!.......2000-05-17

Andre Williams follows up on his amazing 98 "Silky" (with Mick Collins and Dan Akroyd, ex-Gories) and the soft-edged 99 "Red Dirt" (with his country-band "The Sadies") with a record full of friends, fans and fellows: The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Countdowns (who were his band on the 98 European Tour), the Dirtbombs, two ex-Oblivians and lots of other members of the CRYP/In The Red/SFTRI - Family. A rambling, kick-ass, dirty-as-rotten AND groovy R'n'R record that will tear you apart and will make your girlfriend RUN you coz she fell in lurve with ANDRE.

5 out of 5 stars YOU GOT IT AND I WANT IT !.......2000-05-03

A few weaker tunes but in general this CD reminds me of why I wanted to play in a band in the first place. This stuff just isn't generally available in the UK. These days when all thats promoted is bland processed throw away pop where mp3 formats suffice, its great to hear some first rate players. This is the real deal.

The James Taylor Quartet's A Message from the Godfather, certainly isn't going to win any awards for originality. You'd be forgiven if, after popping the disc in your CD player, you begin to think you've mistakenly ended up with a Lonnie Smith or Grant Green Blue Note reissue from the late '60s or early '70s. But, as fans of that era's organ-heavy funkified "soul jazz" could tell you, originality isn't everything. Produced by Snowboy, the British DJ and percussionist whose own recent releases have evoked early '70s Latin jazz players such as Eddie Palmieri, A Message from the Godfather is a throwback in the best sense of that word, a rollicking party album that places the groove front and center and never lets up. Dominated by the fat sound of Taylor's Hammond B-3 organ and by the analog production that makes the album sound as if it really were recorded on a sweaty night in 1970, this is one of the best albums Taylor has come up with to date, and certainly his most organic. That last quality can be a double-edged sword, as saxophonist and flutist John Wilmott and guitarist David Taylor's solos sometimes meander a bit and could possibly have benefited from a little editing. Still, warts and all it'll be hard not the throw this on the stereo next time there's a party in your living room. --Ezra Gale

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent funk.......2007-06-26

This is some of the best funk I have come across in a long time. The B-3 organ drives the tracks and makes you want to get down, but the other instrumentalists never fail to please, especially the sax player.
A great album if you want music for partying or simply appreciate a good groove.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat Acid Jazz at its best.......2005-12-17

Wow! I came across this by accident while looking at some other artists. Of course, you see the James Taylor name and you think of something quite different than Acid Jazz.

At any rate, if you like upbeat, driving, B-3 organ-driven instrumental acid jazz, you will absolutely love this album. I like every one of these cuts and that is a real rarity in my extended music collection. If you are like me, a high percentage of albums will have some selections that you just skip over or you edit your CDs (like I do) by burning just the cuts you like onto a compilation.

However, this album is excellent throughout and their best overall in my book. I tried to listen to some of the selections from their other projects and they did not spark my interest.

Also, if you want some other outstanding B-3 organ jazz music like this, please get yourself some Charles Earland music...like Intensity, Black Talk or Slammin and Jammin....great stuff.

      5 out of 5 stars Irresistable Grooves.......2002-04-12

Let's get one thing straight here: I'm not a jazz expert. I've never heard any of this bands other releases. But I am a devoted music fan and I know a groove when I hear one. and this here is a scorching hot collection of 10 B-3 driven grooves performed with such style, such energy and such soul that it's purely irrestable.
Say what you want about the apparent lack of originality here, but you can't deny the barrage of groovy goodness that this album attacks you with. The gurgling B-3, the thick and deep bass, gritty guitar, relentlessly funky drums and ripping sax/flute weave a sublime texture of fired up grooviness that you can't help but get down to. Highlights include the "Side Stepping" and the title track, but you really can't go wrong with any of these tunes.
So wether you want some tracks to cruise with, chill out too, party too or otherwise, this is disc for you. The grooves will move you.

      5 out of 5 stars Have Mercy!.......2001-10-25

This is quite possibly the best album that the JTQ has even made. They're loose but tight, free flowing and in the groove. It's the product of a group of musicians who have worked together so long that they all know instinctively where each of the others is going. This is the record they hoped 1989's 'Wait a Minute' would be, but in comparison that album sounds stiff and uncertain. 'Godfather' is the JTQ at their most relaxed and natural. To be sure there's no new territoty here - there are a lot of motifs you've heard before. What's new is their approach - never has the JTQ played with this much soul, swing and verve. Sonically, the album is warm and welcoming, the benefits of an all-analog recording (save the press to CD, of course). The best song on the album is "Chalkpit": a stanky New Orleans workout like The Meters used to kick, yet with just a touch of London allnighter amphetamine edginess. The perfect album for the die-hard fan who yearns for the JTQ of over a decade ago (when you used to play the "Blow Up" single until you thought the grooves would wear out), and for the newcomer who wants to discover the true soul of modern souljazz.

5 out of 5 stars JTQ have brought the funk back.......2001-10-03

I have all of JTQs' British released albums, and was only ever marginely disapointed with the last, "A few Tips about Living Underground" which lacked the usual hard groove attached to any JTQ album. The best thing about "Godfather" is its live appeal, recorded in analogue, it gives the air of its contemporarys ie Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson et al. The opening track sets the mood with mind blowing organ and sax solos by James and the amazing John Wilmot. Another track "Tough Chicken" pays homage to Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions" crossed with the illicit "Burning Spear" by S.O.U.L. If you want an album with no real suprises but containing all that is good about Jazz/Funk/Soul I suggest you order this now and wait by the mailbox until it arives!
I can't wait to see these tracks played live when I next go to see JTQ, now they've got the funk back!
