Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another good album by a great singer and writer........2007-03-15

I have all three of his albums and this one I confider to be more jazzy and romantic. I still cannot believe that Rahsaan is not known worldwide because he has great singing and song writing skills that is being ignored. I wish that a major record company will take notice and sign him up. I love to hear him sing and always will. Some of the other male artists out there, don't have half the talent he has and they are making big bucks and well known. Rahsaan's music is real music that I can listen to all day. I am spreading the word about this Artist.

5 out of 5 stars SO HOT!!!.......2007-02-10

Literally, I listen to all three of Rahsaan's CD daily while at work. I remember watching him on 'Kids Incorporated' some years ago in the '80's. He was an proformer then, not only can he sing his is a excellent songwriter as well. We have been listening to his work for years but did not know it, Rahsaan I love your work. I can't wait for the next CD, I know it will be just as HOT as 'After Hours'.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-11-09

I am very fortunate to have come upon Rahsaan's music by chance. This CD is outstanding. I am a new fan!!! I bought Rahsaan Patterson first and could not stop listening to it so I just had to buy this CD. My ears are singing praise!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not The Best, But Still Good.......2006-07-02

If I haven't listened to his former two albums,I would give 5 stars without hesitate...But still a good album! His vocal is sooooooo incredible! Funky Guy..

Great tracks: One For Me,I Always Find Myself,So Hot, Loving You, The Best, You Make Life So Good, Seperate, Yeah Yeah Yeah...Huh,Almost every one!

5 out of 5 stars After Hours.......2006-04-10

This album features stellar vocals, beautiful lyrics and exceptional overall production so why has the mainstream not heard of this artist? I agree with a previous reviewer's comment that there seems to be a conspiracy to silence the truly talented neo-soulsters but Rahsaan Patterson just keeps rolling out terrific albums.

As I listen to this disc again & again, I feel sad that another breakthrough talent, John Legend has received all kinds of accolades and press while Rahsaan is known largely within the wide circle of fans who know how truly magnificent & consistently excellent his music is. I'm not knocking John Legend but it's sad to think that because of whose "crew" one hangs with an automatic pass is given while other equally talented musician/songwriter/singers in r&b are ignored by the mainstream.

I especially loved the tracks Rahsaan worked on with Van Hunt. These two collaborate so well & the sound they create is funky, soulful & original which makes them stand out a little more from the other tracks.

My favorites are: SEPARATE, APRIL'S KISS (magnificent love song), THE ONE FOR ME, BURNIN', SOMETIMES (YOU GOTTA LET GO), THE BEST, SO HOT & DON'T RUN SO FAST.

Rahsaan makes it hard to recommend which disc to get first for the uninitiated but in my opinion, LOVE IN STEREO was his best work followed very closely by this one then his debut. Frankly you can't go wrong by picking any one of his 3 releases first since they're all equally magnificent (hate to keep using this word but it fits this artist).

5 out of 5 stars JUST WONDERFUL!!!.......2004-05-17

THIS IS GREAT! WORDS JUST CAN'T EXPRESS MY EXCITMENT WHEN I FOUND THIS ALBUM. MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE ONES I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR SINCE FOREVER! I'D HEAR IT ON THE RADIO AND WONDER HOW I CAN FIND IT, NOW I HAVE

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for finding hard to locate songs.......2004-02-20

I am a fan of this series as it often is the only place to find old school classics. Songs that were popular back in the day, but by either one-hit-wonders, or artists with out of print recordings. This CD is the only place I could find "Firestarter" by Tease, and "Sugar Free" by Juicy. I also enjoyed "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright and "Come into My Life" by Joyce Sims. This collection is from a day when slow jams were more than just the whining you hear on the radio today. There was rhythm, there was funk, there was soul.

5 out of 5 stars very smooth!!!!.......2003-07-31

A very nice selcetion of songs that are nice there is a song by Eugene Wilde who was popular in the 80's but he didn't get a lot of exposure who is a good singer he has a song on here called don't say no tonight and firestarter, I'm curious, Silver Shadow, Slow down and many other great songs and I would recommend anyone to buy this album I am almost finish with completing the whole collection of smooth grooves but this is a nice cd to add to your romance cds!!!

4 out of 5 stars A fine anthology of the songs that helped define the "Quiet Storm" sound........2003-06-11

Most of the songs included on this great compilation deservedly became Quiet Storm classics. "Firestarter" (Tease), "Gotta Get You Home Tonight" (Eugene Wilde), "Silver Shadow" (Atlantic Starr), "Come Into My Life" (Joyce Sims) and "Sugar Free" (Juicy) still sound great after all these years. I did NOT give these otherwise-superb CD a 5-star rating because the songs by Oddysey and Reel To Real do not belong on a Quiet Storm-oriented anthology. If you are a fan of 1980s R&B, however, you shouldn't pass this CD up. I also like the front and back inserts' photos also.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Smooth Grooves.......2003-03-27

This is without doubt one of the finest in the Smooth Grooves series. A good mix of laid back soul (Juicy, Tease, Keni Burke) and smooth dancers (Bernard Wright, Odyssey, Atlantic Starr). Lots of the tracks here have had a hammering on my soul radio show, and feedback has been excellent. Do yourselves a favour, if you've not purchased this yet, don't waste time putting it on your wants list, get it now.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall Blues Instrumental Cd.......2007-04-07

What initially drew me to this compilation Cd was Ronnie Earl's superb "Baby Doll Blues" which is on three of his Cd's, but all are out-of-print. I was pleasantly surprised as most of the tracks on this compilation are quite good, with standouts (besides 'Baby Doll Blues') being Mike Morgan & the Crawl's "Blues for Al and Peggy" and Tutu Jones' "I'm not Ashamed to Play the Blues." The price makes this a good bargain for the quality of music. Definitely worth getting if you like Slow Blues instrumentals.

Al Anderson is an anomaly. Taller than six-five and built like a linebacker, he's a mammoth of a man who could pile-drive any other musician off the tallest Marshall stack. But stick a pen in his hand, and Big Al has the heart of a lover. This is the Al Anderson of NRBQ fame, but not the faux apologist of "It Was a Accident" (1979's Kick Me Hard) or the guitar menace of Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm" (1977's NRBQ at Yankee Stadium). Since leaving the band in 1993, Anderson's been content from behind the Nashville vista, penning chart-topping country hits for Deana Carter, LeAnn Rimes, Vince Gill and Diamond Rio. His first full-length recording since 1996 offers half a dozen examples of Top 10 potential--including "It's Only Natural," "In My Dreams," "Another Place I Don't Belong" and the remake of NRBQ's "Better Word For Love--and Anderson's inimitably golden pipes breech new territory on "Let's Get Away For the Weekend," a bulls-eye for Randy Newman. "Sounds like a pretty good plan," he croons at chorus end. And a good record, too. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars great songwriting!.......2007-01-10

I've heard several of the songs from this c.d. on Sirius satellite radio and subsequently purchased the album, it does not disappoint, I like every song. You will not be sorry to have this album in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Anderson's Pleasurable "After Hours".......2006-03-24

Prime Cuts: Do Nothin' Day, Love Make a Fool of Me, Better Word for Love

Veneered with a sepia-tone ruminative gloss that throws back to the days of yore where songs were more than just three and a half minute of noise, Anderson's first CD in ten years, "After Hours" is a stunning effort. Unlike his previous CD "Pay before You Pump" or those NRBQ's albums of which Anderson was the guitarist, the music here is not barrelhouse rock. Rather, at the risk of being reductionistic, this collection as the title suggests is a collection of mellow country songs largely designed for a saloon swooning in the wee hours of the morning. Such a rustic orientation should not come as a surprise for, of late, Anderson has become one of Nashville's most sought after writer, penning songs recorded by Tanya Tucker ("You Don't Do It"), Trisha Yearwood ("Powerful Thing"), Diamond Rio ("Unbelievable"), Alabama and Jann Arden ("Will You Marry Me") among others.

Teaming with Jeffrey Steele and Bob DiPero, Anderson has crafted the opener "Love Make a Fool of Me." Here he sets the pace for the album as "Love Make a Fool of Me" has a languid lite-jazz feel augmented by some tasty steel moans and delightful sounding piano. As most singer-songwriters would do, Anderson reprises a couple of his own hits he has had written for others. "Better Word for Love," which first was recorded by NRBQ and later Alabama, is perhaps one of the most gorgeous attempts at trying to capture the true essence of love. Anderson truly has the uncanny ability of alchemizing such a simple sounding melody into a soul-catching song. The other cover is the more upbeat Jimmy Buffett and Martina McBride hit "Trip around the Sound." Though Anderson gruff and sometimes limited ranged vocal is no match for the melismatic Martina McBride, "Trip Around the Sun" has such an affecting melody that it's hard to muff.

Anderson vacates the microphone for two of his fellow songwriters on a couple of tracks. Sharon Vaugh appears as a guest vocalist on the showstopper "Do Nothin' Day." "Do Nothin' Day" a gorgeously written jazz-slanted ballad with its superior sounding musical construction, sounds like it's a freeze-frame resonance to those Cole Porter days. While Tia Sellers who has a more mellifluent vocals compared to Vaugh, sings lead on "What's a Thousand Miles," a Conway-Twitty-like ballad about the unmitigated power of love over the trifles of life.

However, lest one thinks Anderson has altogether become mellow in his primal season, he does join with Delbert McClinton in penning "Blues about You Baby," a surging blues number that is as crusty as the delta in the middle of July. Other than the presence of the unnecessary instrumental "Interlude," there's nothing much to repine about. With the years of experience as a singer and writer, Anderson has become the paragon of expressing the deep intricate details of the heart. Like vintage wine, this is a CD that deserves repeated listening in order to savor the texture, the taste and the maturation of the softer side of Anderson.

5 out of 5 stars Ray plays straight ahead.......2007-03-31

This is a rare opportunity to hear Ray playing straight ahead jazz with legends Joe Harris on drums and Oscar Pettiford walking the bass. Listen to Ray bop along side Joe as he stirs the soup on the brushes during "Dawn Ray". Make no mistake this rhythm section swings hard; after all bop mastro Dizzy Gillespie hired Joe to play drums in his band during the mid 1940's. Enjoy all 38 minutes!

5 out of 5 stars What can you say? It's Ray Charles!.......2007-01-24

The only reason one might not like this would be because they simply don't like Ray Charles and that would be reason enough not to buy it. But if you do like him as I surely do, then this is a must have of his work if you don't have it.

5 out of 5 stars Instumental Ray.......2005-12-17

A lot of folks forget that Ray Charles was a killer jazz-blues pianist. And this CD showcases that side of his talent. An all instrumental set that focuses on his jazz piano style with a heavy dose of the blues!
This is perfect late night listening. An especially nice are the trio cuts, which make up about half of the CD.
Late-night stripped down Ray with a serious case of the blues is what you get here!

5 out of 5 stars Late night soporific (no ice).......2005-08-08

If I was in a quiet bar, enjoying a quiet drink, late at night, feeling mellow and relaxed ... this is the music I'd be listening to. I know nothing about jazz (my wife told me) but even I know a stunning recording when I hear it. Released in 1961, therefore only 38 minutes of music on this album, but hey, it's 1961 right? If you want more, play it twice.

      5 out of 5 stars Lost treasures.......2004-02-20

This Smooth Grooves compilation is great for 2 reasons: 1. It's a great mix of 80's R&B, and 2. it includes lost gems you can't find elsewhere.

I bought this CD as it was the ONLY place I could find "Heaven In Your Arms" by RJ's Latest Arrival, an uptempo ballad from an obscure R&B group from the 80's that didn't get very good promotion.

A pleasant surprise was the 12-inch mix of "I Can't Go For That" by Hall & Oates. Not the version that you hear on pop stations or the regular CDs, but the funky club version that 'those in the know' were listening to back in the early 80's.

5 out of 5 stars 1980s Sophisticated R&B dance jams at their best!.......2003-06-11

After the rise and fall of the disco era, urban club music took on a new level of sophistication as evidenced by the 12 tracks included here. Although "Human", "I Can't Go For That" and "Keep On Moving" were the only major crossover hits, you should not overlook such rare and underappreciated gems like"Heaven In Your Arms","Change Of Heart" and "On The Beat". 12 great mid-tempo dance hits and very informative liner notes make this one a worthwhile addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars After Hours 2: More Northern Soul Masters.......2004-06-27

Here's another blistering compilation of American soul that we have to go to England for. This 26-song disc comes from Warner and includes rarities from the Warner Bros., Atlantic, Atco, Loma and Reprise labels from 1964-72. This one is just as good for cranking on a car stereo on a summer night (as I discovered one night last summer in NYC) as it is on a dance floor.
Many of the tracks are lesser-known cuts by better-known acts ("Baby Help Me" by Percy Sledge, the bouncing "Here I Go Again" by Archie Bell & the Drells, Ben E. King's string-filled "I Can't Break the News to Myself"), along with a tracks by people better known for other things (Bill Cosby's lighthearted romp through Stevie Wonder's "Uptight," future TV theme-meister Mike Post's stirring instrumental "Afternoon of the Rhino" and Leslie Uggams' snappy 2-minute stomper "Don't You Even Care"). And in most cases, no way does lesser-known mean lesser quality. Most of these songs qualify as parallel-universe top-40 hits. There are some average tunes, such as Mary Wells' "Keep Me in Suspense" and Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles' "You Forgot How to Love," but they're the exception.
The most radiant of the rarely heard gems: Joanie Sommers' tough-yet-resilient vocals over the deliberate, piano-driven stomp of "Don't Pity Me"; Deon Jackson (of "Love Makes the World Go Round" fame) delivering more smooth vocals over a dynamic horn bed on "That's What You Do to Me"; "King of the Horse," The Delights Orchesta's raging response to arguably the best soul instrumental of them all, Cliff Nobles' "The Horse"; and "Fireman" by Vala Reegan & the Valarons -- think a high-rev "Come See About Me" with a tribal beat, rhythmic guitar accents and timely horn bursts.
