Product Description
World Class Noise celebrates its tenth anniversary with this eclectic release of rock and soul that showcases the best Chicago has to offer. The lyrics are thoughful, provocative and fun, and the music is an old school romp of acoustic instruments with the gut bucket funk of the Tough Love Horns sealing the deal. Of course no one tops the gritty soulful vocals of leader and founder, marc Pulido, and his foil is the powerful yet sultry voice of Julie Mc Gough. Six new originals, the awesome remakes of "Domino" and "You've Got the Love" plus eleven bonus tracks from the band's previous five CDs make this a must for 2003!

One of country's fastest-rising acts, Sugarland arrive at their follow-up to 2004's triple-platinum Twice the Speed of Life in a considerably altered state. Chief songwriter and founding member Kristen Hall is gone, and producer Garth Fundis (Trisha Yearwood) has been usurped in favor of crossover hitmaker Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill). One could argue that these are the predictable results of success--by opening for such megastars as Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn, the Atlanta-based trio was forced to retool its organic, singer-songwriter, folk-rock sound to fill arenas. And while their intricate vocal harmonies added a subtle creative dimension to their debut, Enjoy the Ride is made up mostly of songs ("County Line," "Mean Girls") constructed to showcase lead singer Jennifer Nettles's big voice in ways the previous album did not. While the repertoire was written by Nettles and surviving partner Kristian Bush in collaboration with proven songsmiths Bobby Pinson, Lisa Carver, and Tim Owens, much of the wistful intimacy of the first album is now diminished. Furthermore, it seems foolish to now call this act a duo, as Bush receives very little time in the spotlight apart from his vocal harmonies and performance on guitar and mandolin. None of this should matter on the charts, however, since the real focus was always on Nettles, whose twangy, force-field soprano more than carries the day. As before, the lyrics are upbeat and positive--if the message of the first album was of flight and searching, the theme here is of digging in. The winsome Nettles does a fine job of selling it all, positioning herself as the Ambassador of Optimism, the Deep South successor to Jo Dee Messina. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Sugarland, with the help of producer Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack), deliver the same ferocity on Enjoy The Ride. From the catchy coming-of-age kick-off single and chart-topping "Want To," to the reflective rocker "County Line" and the hopelessly optimistic "One Blue Sky," the combination of Jennifer's powerhouse country-soul voice with Kristian's passionate harmonies and deep-rooted musicality hits home, even if these two road veterans, each with a decade of club experience behind them, hardly ever see theirs. "If we can't go home, we do in our minds," Kristian explains of their songwriting process, which on this record, includes collaborations with country artist Bobby Pinson ("Want To"), Brad Paisley's co-writer Tim Owens ("Settlin'"), old pal Jeff Cohen ("April Showers") and Nashville local Lisa Carver ("One Blue Sky," "Everyday America," "County Line," "These Are The Days"). "There's a sense of nostalgia," Jennifer continues. "You pull from the time when you were figuring out who you are as a person. Like in 'Want To,' it's not only a story of falling in love, it's about that moment or a choice that could change your life. And with 'County Line,' it's about a place where you have your first kiss or get in a fight or talk about football and that time when you felt most free."
Customer Reviews:
If you buy it, you may become Sugerland's addicted !.......2007-07-28
First time I heard Sugarland was in an MTV HD special with Bon Jovi. I decided then to purchase this CD. Nice songs, well interpreted by the Sugarland group.
Annoying voice from an over-rated woman........2007-07-16
Sugarland is one of the worst country bands ever produced. Frontwoman Jennifer Neetles has one of the most cringe worthy voices ever! That stupid song, Everyday America is completely dreadful and that over-played, Settlin' should have never seen the light of day. If you want to listen to bad country/pop music then Enjoy the Ride is just for you, but if you want a great listenable country album then check out Miranda Lambert's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Lambert actually has some talent!
Enjoy the Ride.......2007-07-05
This cd has a few great songs but they seem to blend together by the end of the cd! Not as exciting as I thought...
Nettles is a Legend in the Making.......2007-05-23
In today's cookie-cutter music industry that is full of over-produced and studio-pastuerized songs, it is vital to have a unique tone and style that makes you immediately-identifiable on the radio. At the core, I am a Rock musician, yet I appreciate a variety of music styles when performed and recorded well. Sugarland entered the scene as a "hip" Country act and knocked us (the audience) into a full-on smile! While they have been admirable and impacting as a group, it truly IS Jennifer's voice that is a huge selling point as a member of the band. When she sings, you immediately KNOW that it is HER! Many musicians just DREAM of having a instantly-recognizeable style that people will love! Miss Nettles is THERE! Furthermore, just about ANYTHING Country that she sings is gonna sound great because of her deep Southern accent and her unique vibrato and determined energy. How many OTHER Country artists have had a hit single with Jon Bon Jovi? It is hard to NOT like Jennifer Nettles, unless you don't like Country music AT ALL!! 'Nuff said!!!
Enjoy the Ride by Sugarland.......2007-05-20
I loved the CD. I think Sugarland gets better with ever CD released. Would recommend almost every song on the Cd.

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17
This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.
Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04
This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.
The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07
The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.
Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12
I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.
Great Selections.......2007-03-31
This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

Amazon.com essential recording
Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
A gem!.......2007-07-21
This album is, hands down, one of the best albums ever produced IMHO. Every song has its story and even though they are all different they are all powerful. I fail to see, hear, or feel any weakness in this album; it is a complete work of art. The only other albums that come close to this one are Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and The Beatle's Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; the comparison of this album to these two speaks for itself. A real gem.
great second album..a masterpiece.......2007-07-15
This album has been one of my favorites for years. I became a fan of Metallica back in late 1989. I had always heard of them and knew of them as heavy metal. I was always up for hearing something heavy and this album surely delivers.
Fight Fire With Fire starts out like a nice classical piece with what sounds like three guitars. It's a sweet melody that fades away into a nice rising note that crashes into the riff. This song is fast and heavy and really distills war into its first line: Do unto others as they've done to you/ But what the hell is this world coming to? It ends with furious riffing and a giant explosion sound effect. And even before that fades away Ride the Lightning starts up. This is a great song with a fairly simple structure that the next few albums would make more difficult to play but more fun to listen to.
For Whom the Bell Tolls, while not a hit, is still played by many rock stations and has become a live staple. It's a great song with one of the best riffs ever written. Fade to Black starts out nice and slow and has a nice heavy chorus. This is the beginning of their progression from the standard thrash that was so prevalent on their first album. It's too bad for all the fans who think they sold out with the black album when on this album they were doing the exact same thing!! It's just that on later albums they took it a step further.
Trapped Under Ice is a nice short 4 minute thrasher that never really lets up. It's a bit of weak song compared to the rest, but a good song for head banging. Escape is probably the worst song they ever did (and the St Anger album) and the writing is a bit amateurish here. I didn't know at first why I didn't like this but i guess its the backing vocals that make it sound like a pop song. UGH!
To make up for this bad song the very next song, Creeping Death, is my very favorite track. This is pretty much about the killing of the first born as told in Exodus 22 I believe. This is a nice high energy song that's all the more powerful when played live. A note here, the best live version of this is from Tushino Airfield in Russia from September 1991. It's available on the Sad But True CD single I believe.
The Call of Ktulu is a great Cliff Burton instrumental that starts nice and quiet and builds to a big heavy song. I always liked this thing and the ending is always sweet and a great way to finish off this amazing album.
So this is 5 stars. Without question!
Some of their best work (pre-sellout).......2007-07-10
I do own this album. I bought it on CD and cassette back when they were released. And to this day, this is one of their best albums. It's just too bad that they they all had to turn into a bunch of a-holes and sign on to be monkey boys for the RIAA, suing children and P2P networks.
Ride the Lightning with Metallica.......2007-07-09
For sheer metal mayhem, there are fewer CDs available that are better than this one. Ride the Lightning features some of the finest Metallica material they produced. From Creeping Death to For Whom the Bell Tolls, this is a CD not to be missed. A five star metal masterpiece.
Great.......2007-07-06
This CD is classic Metallica ALL the CD's shine for a million different reasons. Each one is different and each one is great.

Customer Reviews:
Good selection.......2005-10-02
I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.
thunderous applause.......2005-08-31
This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!
Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06
I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.
You will like this!.......2004-02-19
I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.
This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.
I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!
Good for the novice.......2002-06-08
The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

Customer Reviews:
Vienna Teng- Waking Hour.......2007-05-30
Great music. Saw her on tv and bought the cd because of that show. Excellent quality cd.
Good times........2007-03-26
This music is beautiful and relaxing, but complex enough that it never becomes boring. I can fall asleep to it, and also listen to it all day at work. I'll definitely be buying her other albums when I have a chance.
Vienna .......2007-02-14
If you miss Vienna Teng the onus is upon you. Check out her latest. If lyrics which include more than three repeated words drag you down, then avoid her.
Vienna Teng...Walkng Hour........2007-01-03
It's a good cd. Worth owning. Her best is Warm Strangers, I highly recommend that one.
Nice piano work.......2006-11-04
Nice sound on the piano. Lyrics a little too melodramatic for my taste. I do look forward to hearing more from her in the future.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource - We LOVE This CD!.......2007-07-16
This is a GREAT CD! Both the children and my husband and I love it. We bought it as an introduction to opera for our homeschooled children, and never guessed we'd all enjoy it so much.
All the tunes are ones you will probably recognize - but hearing the words that go with the music and hearing them in *English* is so helpful! It has been really fun to find out what these songs are really about.
My kids and I often catch ourselves singing opera through the day now, which is really neat. It has helped build their understanding of music in many different ways, and has improved my oldest daughter's voice ability as she strives to keep up with the professional singers on the CD.
The music is beautiful, the words are lovely and give meaning, and this whole CD is just exceptionally good entertainment!
Great Intro to Operas.......2006-10-16
THE WORLD"S VERY BEST OPERA FOR KIDS is a collection of fourteen of the best loved arias in the world. The whole family will enjoy this CD, which is a unique version of these famous arias in that these are all sung in English so your child (and you) can appreciate and imagine the story that it illustrates. It is a wonderful introduction to opera and will have the whole family humming the memorable melodies, which are sung by some of the best of famous voices. You will be inspired to read the storylines of the operas to your children for a wonderful educational and delightful family hour. The CD includes an insert with the words so you can sing along
A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too.......2006-04-05
It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen CDs to distribute to family members and friends, with kids (and without). Everyone loves it. And at the end of the CD are several tracks of just the music, so you can sing along, which is a hoot. Your friends and colleagues, who hear you barking along to beats, will think you have taken leave of your senses. The lyrics (in English) are in the liner notes. I would suggest not reading the liner notes while driving.
Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.
World's Very Best Opera for Kids... in English.......2006-01-30
I listen to this with my 3 year old and we both enjoy it. I am not an operatic expert and to my lay ears the performances here sound great, and my daughter likes hearing the words to some of her favorite music ("Play the Torreadores again Mommy!") Its a nice break from some more traditional kids songs that we listen to.
Great for adults too!.......2005-08-15
I never had an interest in opera until I made a trip to Italy and dined in an opera cafe. I appreciate it even more thanks to this CD. Now that I can hear the lyrics in english and read a synopsis of the story, I appreciate and enjoy opera even more.

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey

Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10
This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.
Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05
Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."
Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.
Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.
As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?
A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.
Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15
Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.
But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

Smoothjazz.com Review.......2007-04-16
Wow, what a stunning follow-up to Dee's outstanding George Howard tribute disc of a couple of years ago! When I reviewed "Remembrance," I mentioned what an impressive job Dee had done in re-creating the distinctive George Howard style while putting his own unique signature on each tune. I was thinking to myself at the time that as good as that album was, I couldn't wait to hear the next Dee Lucas project, when he performed music that he could truly make his own. SOMETHING TO RIDE 2 is that project, and my expectations have been exceeded. This album is rich, tasty, classy, and I could just keep adding positives! This truly is a first-rate collection of soprano sax-driven music, and it should indeed be a breakout release for Mr. Lucas. There's not one throwaway track on this disc, with the hits "Bayou" and the cover of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" (including a bonus mix) in the forefront. Speaking of covers, Dee's takes on Kem's "I Can't Stop Loving You" and Brian McKnight's "Never Felt This Way" are exceptional. This is just a quality outing from first note to last... smooth and mellow, with an understated urban funk groove as a foundation. I told you that "Remembrance" was a "must have." Dee Lucas' new one, SOMETHING TO RIDE 2, is absolutely in the same category, and I expect it to propel him to the forefront of the Smooth Jazz format. You will fall in love with this album! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

Ride with Bob is the new and improved sequel to Asleep at the Wheel's star-studded 1993 effort, Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. The playing behind the high-profile guest vocalists is hotter and looser this time, with plenty of solo space and the Wheel's Ray Benson assuming Wills's jovial ringleader role. Merle Haggard delivers a wild falsetto version of "St. Louis Blues" backed by the Squirrel Nut Zippers' horns, and Willie Nelson steps out with the Manhattan Transfer on "Going Away Party." Steve Wariner and Vince Gill trade fluid guitar licks on "Bob's Breakdown," Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin share a mic on "Faded Love," and the Dixie Chicks romp through "Roly Poly." All of Asleep at the Wheel's recordings have been tributes to Wills's Western-swing legacy in one way or another, but this is as close as they've come to distilling the timeless essence of the sound. --Rick Mitchell

Fiddles!!!.......2007-01-16
This a frandamtastic tribute to Bob Wills & the Original Texas Playboys, & Asleep at the Wheel does ol Bob Proudly. AATW shines clearly & the well known artists, such as Willie, Reba, Dixie Chicks, Merle Haggard do not out weigh this fine rendition. If you like fiddle/country swing, this one can't be beat.
Stands the test of time.......2006-03-26
I loved this CD when I bought it back in 2000. Played it countless times while commuting in my car, danced around the house to it on several occasions I won't say more about - and six years later I still enjoy listening to it! I could live without maybe three of the seventeen tracks, but overall I treasure this music.
What a collection of artists here: the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, Clint Black, Lee Ann Womack, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Reba McEntire, The Manhattan Transfer, Tim McGraw and of course Asleep at the Wheel. The best talent, peforming strong songs. Classic country, Texas swing - whatever you call it, it's music to enjoy for years. At least, it has been for me.
What Country Music Is Missing--this album is not.......2005-06-20
As a resident of the Nashville area and having heard all the stories from insiders about the misdirection, if not indirection, of the major country labels, all one needs to do is to listen to "Ride with Bob," and one is suddenly aware of what is missing in modern country music. True that the album is "Texas swing," but it is a lot closer to country music than what is pouring out of Nashville these days. While I am not a prude, it is nice to listen to music that does not pound away at sexual and alcohol themes. "Faded Love" with Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett is my special favorite--Colvin's voice is as good as it gets. And if Willie Nelson and Manhattan Transfer don't convince you to play "Going Away Party" at your funeral,
your weren't listening.
The best they've ever done !.......2003-11-17
This is the pinnacle of Texas Swing! They add variety by adding cameos by other artists, with the ATW band providing instrumentals to the visiting star's vocals, and it works sooo well! I never get tired of listening to this album because it's not one of those that just drones on with the same tempo and style in each track - it has tremendous variety.
Asleep At The Wheel has produced some very good albums, but this is the best I've heard. Very glad I bought it.
Second great tribute to the king of western swing.......2003-09-06
Ray Benson and the other members of Asleep at the Wheel had never made any secret of the fact that Bob Wills was their biggest influence, but they emphasized the point by recording two tribute albums in the nineties devoted entirely to his music, of which this is the second. Both albums featured a star-studded line-up of guests.
Bob's best and most famous song is Faded love, though the song is generally associated with Patsy Cline who made it her own. Here Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett sing it as a duet and it works very well this way.
Among my other favorite tracks here are Roly Poly (with the Dixie Chicks), Heart to heart talk (with Lee Ann Womack), You're from Texas (with Tracy Byrd), Right or wrong (with Reba McEntire) and Going away party (with Willie Nelson and the Manhattan Transfer).
Another interesting track is Maiden's prayer featuring the Squirrel nut zippers - surely the least well-known guests here - I'd never heard of them till I heard them here. The version here is not based on Bob's standard recording but on a rare alternate version that Bob recorded with an arrangement reminiscent of Glenn Miller. The vocalist on this track is Katherine Whalen, who as an interesting voice that suits the song well.
All the tracks here are brilliant. Your favorites may be different from mine, but if you like real country music that swings, Texas style, this is for you.
