Love At First Sight.......2007-06-27

There is no doubt that Dionne Warwick has a magnificent voice. From the 1960s to today, her smooth R&B vocals have remained a factor on the airwaves of both AM and FM radio. From Warner Brothers Records, the 1977 release of Love At First Sight is no less a wonderful portrayal of the power of those vocals. Though it did not yield any significant hits, Love At First Sight does offer a "lost gem" in the East Coast Beach Music scene in track #10 "Do You Believe In Love At First Sight." Hard to find in most venues, this one song is worth the price alone.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

The Music You Were Playing Really Blew My Mind..........2002-10-28

The third smash international single from Kylie Minogue's smash album "Fever", is the second track promoted to America as a single. Climbing into the top 40, it was Kylie's fifth top 40 hit, following the top ten success of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". This Australian CD-Maxi release of the single is probably the best put together of the international releases, this package contains the b-sides and mixes that were released on two seperate pressings in the UK.
The b-sides of the single are wonderful, the first being a new version of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", filtered through New Order's classic single "Blue Monday." This new "Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head" is probably even better than the pop gem of the original. Next up is the great "Baby". An incredibly strong bonus tune, it could have easily made the album, and it did, as it's also available on the Japanese issue of the "Fever" album.
Next up is a trio of mixes, the best being the dance pop makeover by Twin. It keeps the pop feel of the song, but still manages to club the song up a bit. A nearly ten minute Ruff & Jam remix also holds it's own, providing a perfect mix to lose yourself in on the dancefloor. The only dud is the Scumfrog edit, a dark thumping mix, it really doesn't fit the song as well as the other mixes, and despite being in a bite-size edit format, it's still hard to swallow. Despite the one flawed mix, this package is excellent, and perfect for the fans of this song.

Since the smash-hit No.1 single Can't Get You Out Of My Head from September 2001, Kylie Minogue has enjoyed her biggest success since 1988. Can't Get You Out Of My Head sold more than 1,150,000 copies last year to become the 3rd biggest seller of 2001. The No.1 album Fever has sold more than 1,000,000 copies in the UK (8,000,000 worldwide) and the hit single In Your Eyes hit No.3 in February. Her sold out European tour kicked off in spectacular fashion in April 2002 and has yet to finish. Love At First Sight is the third single from the amazing album Fever. My Love At First Sight single is the UK Version and features three songs and a video.

1. Love At First Sight (10/10) - This has to be one of Kylie's greatest singles ever. Not as strong as Can't Get You Out Of My Head, but catchier and stronger than In Your Eyes. Shame it wont get to No.1 because of that Elvis tune.

2. Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head (10/10) - This stunning remix of the No.1 single is (dare I say?!) better than the original. This was the version she performed at the Brit Awards 2002 in THAT skimpy white mini-dress. The 9 or 10 fasts beats are so cool and catchy (I think it's 9 - they go so fast I can't count!).

3. Baby (10/10) - This amazing song was included on some Import versions of Fever. I just don't understand why it wasn't included on the UK edition!!! It's just so catchy; "ba, ba, ba/ba, ba, ba, ba, ba". I know that doesn't give much away about the song - but remember Cant Get You Out Of my Head? You loved the "la,la,la"'s on that didn't ya?! Eh? Eh? Eh?

4. Love At First Sight (Enhanced Video) (10/10) - The video to Love At First Sight is absolutely amazing!!! Much better than the In Your Eyes video. I love the white lines all over the screen and the way the camera never changes from one shot to another - it stays focused on Kylie or the dancers all the time. She looks a bit dizzy and smitten in the video - so much so that she forgets she has her thong hanging out!!! And what is with the blue eyeshadow. Two words Kylie: "Ask somebody"!!!

The whole of this CD is fantastic - apart from the sticker. I like to peel stickers off and now I can't because it doesn't say who it's by on the CD cover!!!

GREAT SONG BUT AVERAGE CD.......2002-07-22

A new single from Kylie's excellent album. 'Love at first sight' is a song that gets you right from the start and keeps you feel alive long time after you have heard the song.

Kylie has demonstrated that it is possible to make dance music for dance and general people without filling tracks with loud beats all along the time.

Though the song is very good and the song 'Baby' is interesting too, the remixes of the title track don't do justice to the original song. So you'd better go to thew album if you haven't already got it.

If you have the album, there is not anything essential in this CD that you haven't heard before.

The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

French edition is a must!.......2005-04-03

Kylie's release for "Love At First Sight" was a great choice from the "Fever" album that alot of people were very pleased about (that it was going to be a single). The single reached #2 in the UK and #3 in Australia but this French edition is also a must! It does not actually say what song it is but it does have the same gorgeous blue picture as the UK CD #1. It also includes the first same 3 tracks as the UK CD #1 and also features 2 unreleased remixes, especially remixed for the French edition of the single.

01 Love At First Sight (03.57) -- Kylie's pure pop candy heaven from the album "Fever", as most of the album was. The song was so memorable to fans and even adults which meant you could scream your head off at it (LOL). A great song for getting ready to hit the dancefloor or on a saturday night!!! Found on #2 on the "Fever" album. (10/10)

02 Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head (04.01) -- More of Kylie's pure pop candy heaven, here! with her #1 smash "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", mixed with Blue Monday's "New Order". It has no voice or singing from Blue Monday, just their music from "New Order". Dare I say (LOL), this version is better than the actual original! (10/10)

03 Baby (03.48) -- And again, more of Kylie's pop heaven! This totally memorable B-Side is excellent and such a great addition to this single which was included on the Japanese edition of the "Fever" album. I just don't get why it was not included on the UK version of the album!!! (LOL) If you get this version you are pretty much getting the full UK CD #1 apart from the video so get this one!

04 Love At First Sight (Dancefloor Killa Mix) (06.25) -- This is remixed Kylie pure pop candy heaven! And it's done very excellent! It includes alot of sounds and it is more intimate and lively (LOL) than the original version. Once you've finished listening to this stomping remix you should have worked your butt off! (LOL)

05 Love At First Sight (Mekaniko Mix) (06.22) -- This remix is absolutely superb. It turns Kylie's pure pop candy heaven world (LOL) into Kylie's dark, mysterious mechanical world (LOL). But this remix is superbly done. Also check out Scumfrog, Ruff N Jam and Twin Masterplan's mixes! Those are also excellent and check out the video!

Overall - A definate 10/10!

Kylie is still the princess of pop! This cute 25-minute packaging proves it! Also buy the Australian edition of "Chocolate" then you'll be on top of the world! (LOL) It includes "Love At First Sight" (Live) and "City Games" plus the video and 2 remixes!

This is a great single. Probably one of the best out there. The remixes are really good. You know how sometimes remixes aren't that good and they kinda get annoying after a while? Well, not on this one... You can actually sit there and listen to them! Wow! Also, the song "Baby" is really good, I love it. And "Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head" is almost as good as the original! It's really good, but I still prefer the original "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" over the Blue Monday version. "Love At First Sight" is probably the best song off of Kylie's CD "Fever" and is one of my favorite songs! I reccomend this single as well as the CD is was taken off of ("Fever") to anyone. Kylie is hot, and she can sing, what more can you ask for? Enjoy!

while back in 95 when Mary Hooked up with Meth everything was cool&It didn't come across as Contrived as this attempt does.this track has Re-Mix written all over it at best.Mary&Puffy have the Best Chemistry together of all the People Mary has worked with but you can't go back into a time travel Machine&Re-Create 92-94.Her Vocals don't move me much anymore either.Props for using a Tribe Joint but this Song could&Should have Been Better for 03.it sounds like a 93 outtake that still ahsn't fully thawed out.

Mary J. Blige returns with another top 10 smash, "Love At 1st Sight" from her forthcoming album "Love & Life". You can hear a happier Mary not only by her extraordinary vocal range, but also by the words she sings: "Looking at you from a distance/getting all of my attention/could this be love at 1st sight?"

Blige re-teams with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs on this song (along with Mario Winans) with moderate success. At first listen, it's nothing groundbreaking (the song samples A Tribe Called Quest's "Hot Sex") but after a few spins it becomes pure fun and happiness. It's no "Family Affair" but it comes close.
