Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Heartbreaker opens with an argument about a Morrissey song before the band kicks into the sloppy and rollicking "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)," and certainly the gloomster's self-referential sadness hangs over Ryan Adams's songs. But Adams, the notoriously raucous frontman for the defunct Whiskeytown, is a country boy at heart if not in attitude, so there is a lingering pastoral beauty that imbues the album with a happy sweetness as well. That, along with Ryan's expressive, gravelly voice (equal parts Paul Westerberg and Merle Haggard), gives Heartbreaker enduring power. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
With a touch of Robyn Hitchcock in his vocal timbre, a smidgen of Steve Earle in his narratives and instrumental writing, and a heap of Gram Parsons in the fullness of his overall sound and structure, Ryan Adams steps well above Whiskeytown with Heartbreaker, his solo debut. By turns raucous, wistful, raspy, and simply sweet, Adams makes the most of a top-shelf acoustic band, including Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and even a guest spot from Emmylou Harris on the tenderly yearning "Oh My Sweet Caroline." There's little dependence on the usual alt-country twang and a far more rounded sense of textures here (the multiple vocal tracks on "Amy," for example, sound Beatles-esque), with glockenspiel, organ, and more signaling a sonic field of extensive depth. His spare guitar and stretched-thin vocal delivery alternate smartly with a bigger-shouldered guitar and throaty voice, never leaving behind a band conception straight out of Parsons's oeuvre. Adams signals occupancy of the post-alt-country vanguard--if there is such a thing. --Andy Bartlett

life is hell.......2007-07-10
Ryan Adams/GillianWelch/David Rawlings.....What more do you want???? i still reach for this CD for OH MY SWEET CAROLINA....i'm a lousy guitar player but that one i can do....in my opinion Ryan Adams is our premier DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH...and should be honored as such....even his crapwork is better than most....mea culpa if i am wrong
A damn near perfect album.......2007-06-12
When I was just discovering Ryan Adams several years ago, a friend bought me this album, claiming it was his best. Not only is it Adams' best, it's one of the most consistent, timeless, ageless albums in the past 25 years.
There's truly not a weak track on it and the pacing is perfect. It never gets too twangy, yet has the down-to-earth, dusty lyrics that define the country genre (ie. "Be My Winding Wheel" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina", where Adams knows exactly where to use Emmilou Harris' haunting voice). "Bartering Lines" channels a young Neil Young and "Come Pick Me Up"'s drunken, almost-too-simple lyrics are made perfectly bittersweet with the catchiest harmonica melody imaginable. "Damn Sam" is a track that longing, scorned boyfriends will listen to on repeat. Rare, relaxed, pop/country/bluegrass sublimity.
Honestly, I Prefer Adams' Later Stuff.......2007-04-24
I guess i'm one of those Ryan Adams' fans that true Ryan Adams' / Whiskeytown fans spit upon, because I was largely unimpressed by this record. I think the alt-country thing is great and all, but after starting strong, this album gets a little tired towards the end and the songs all sorta run together. "AMY" and "To Be Young..." are the highlights in my opinion and are reason enough to buy Heartbreaker used, but if you're like me and loved Rock & Roll / Love Is Hell, then prepare to be disappointed. No smack against Adams, but this one just didn't turn my crank.
The Most Inspired Artist of the 21st Century.......2006-12-18
A diatribe in Spin Magazine sent me to buy my first RA CD which was the oft-maligned "Rock n' Roll". Figured any artist that generated so much controversy - everything from "Ryan Adams is Master of the Universe" to "Ryan Adams is a self-indulgent, derivative, over-prolific jerk that has squandered his talent" was someone I should check out. R&R had that 'certain something' catchy and intriguing enough for me to buy "Love is Hell" (which is utterly stunning) and thus began a Ryan Adams binge that is still in full force. "Heartbreaker" is definitive, yet only one of the thousand moods and musical styles he is capable of. If you are new to Mr. Adams, start here: get in your car and take a long drive with this CD turned up as loud as you can stand it. Listen all the way through once, then listen to it again. Lyrics, phrasing, composition, heart, soul, authenticity. Adams is at least Master of the Universe. Heartbreaker isn't my favorite of his expansive catalog, but "Amy" & "Call Me on Your Way Back Home" make my knees buckle.
When did cry-baby sob music become popular?.......2006-12-14
As if Jeff Tweedy and EMO music weren't bad enough for the music industry. I'd rather have my toes plucked off with bolt cutters than have to listen to this album again.

One spin through the debut of Austin-based singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney and you may think you've entered a time warp: The Longview, Texas, native so hearkens to the honky-tonk era of the '60s and '70s that you half expect to find her on an old kinescope of one of those syndicated Nashville TV shows, the special guest ("Let's bring up a little gal now from Texas...") of the Wilburn Brothers or Porter and Dolly. Sweeney isn't a power vocalist--she'd be called a "girl singer" in the old days, stepping up demurely to do her song or two--but she's got a sense of humor, poking fun of herself on "Next Big Nothing" and insisting if you play one song in reverse, you get a broken heart. She can also cop an attitude when she wants, as on "Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame," an original tune where she evokes the good-ol'-gal assertiveness of Loretta Lynn. Sweeney has fine taste in covers, too, offering up Iris DeMent's 'Mama's Opry" and the Lacy J. Dalton hit "16th Avenue," as well as two songs by Jim Lauderdale, who lends his vocals to Keith Sykes's "Lavender Blue." Otherwise, Sweeney doesn't seem to care a flip about what's going on anyplace but right there in the Lone Star State, keeping things twangy, tangy, and tonkin', the teardrop pedal steel functioning almost as a duet vocalist, and her guitarists eschewing Music City formula riffs for stuttering electric solos and the occasional walking bass. It's been a long time since any young female--think Joy Lynn White, maybe--got this deep-dish country. Sweeney may never get on the radio, but she'll keep the sawdust swirling on the dance floor for a long time to come. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, recorded in Floresville, TX and co-produced by Sunny with producers Tommy Detamore (guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, Dobro) and Tom Lewis (drums), isn't one of those quiet, timid little baby-steps records that slowly grows on you with hints of future potential. It explodes into the room with an ultra-confident, Texas-sized "HOWDY!" and demands your full attention.
Listen to Sunny rip and swagger her way through the dozen songs on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, and you wonder: Where has this gal been hiding until now? The first thing that grabs you is her voice - a big, bold and brassy instrument that brings to mind both the classic female country singers of the `60s and `70s that she grew up on as part of a country-music-loving family (both her grandfather and stepfather played in bands) as well as two of Sunny's biggest modern influences, Natalie Maines and Kasey Chambers, at their most unapologetically untamed. It's a voice that all but screams Sunny's adopted slogan: "Get your honky-tonk on!"
And on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, Sunny does just that. From winning originals like "Ten Years Pass," "Slow Swinging Western Tunes" and the title track, to classy covers of tunes by some of her favorite writers (including Iris DeMent, Keith Sykes, Thom Schuyler and Jim Lauderdale), it's an album that has little in common with either pop country or "Texas country." It's country, pure and simple - as primed for a Lone Star honky-tonk as it is the Grand Ole Opry or any radio station that still makes room for George and Tammy and Merle and Loretta.
Customer Reviews:
My goodness, Sunny!.......2007-05-22
Fantastic! I heard Ms Sweeney on a satellite radio station and was immediately hooked. She has such a sweet honesty in her voice, and her songs tickle that ol' thinkin' bone stuck up in the brain. I was most pleased with this cd and look forward to much, MUCH more from Sunny Sweeney. My family members will be getting this cd in their Christmas stockings!
Dancehall cowgirl.......2007-05-12
This is a great sound for country dancehall music. Kick-back with a cold beer and wear your cowboy boots. You'll feel like your in Austin, Texas on a summer Saturday night.
Crucial Country.......2007-05-09
I absolutely love Sunny Sweeney and this CD! The video for "If I Could" came across my path on YahooMusic one nite and I loved it. The CD has some tracks that are worth the 'price of admission' each by themself, including "East Texas Pines", "If I Could", and "Next Big Nothing". Great vocals, great pedal steel, strong guitar work. This album has revitalized my interest in singing again.
Move over Gretchen Wilson.......2007-04-21
Sunny does a perfect job of making honky tonk music with catchy tunes a twang in her voice and powerful rhythm. I find her similar to Jill King and Julie Reeves also great sounding country artists. I highly recommend this album to the serious country music lover.
Catching Texas twang with a gift for lyrics.......2007-04-17
Sunny Sweeney's debut album, Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame is compelling and catching. It feels more like a live honky-tonk performance in part because it has the pared down sound of a great bar band and not the over produced sound of too many studio albums. Sunny is a singer song-writer. The album offers a mix of her work and that of other song-writers.
What first caught my ear was the song, "If I Could." It's an infectious anthem for the average worker with an auctioneer's tempo for the catchy chorus. I found this song through Yahoo's Music Videos Country Music channel. Yahoo generates a play list, including new offerings based upon your past selections and ratings. It works. I loved this song and bought the album. A lot of catchy songs don't move me to buy. Sunny got my money.
Another special treat is a cover of, "16th Avenue," a song made famous by Lacey J. Dalton. The cover nicely matches the rest of the album in voice and tone and is not an exact copy of Dalton's version. Sunny Sweeney makes it hers.
The album is solid and engaging. It is real Country Music and Texas genuine. I'll be watching for more from Sunny Sweeney. She reputedly has a great following around her home base in Austin, Texas. I think her fan base is set to grow.

Heartbreaker marks Kathy Brier's solo debut recording. The album inludes original pop/rock tracks written by some of the countries best writers, and features "When It's Real," written by the legendary Diane Warren, as seen on ABC's "One Life To Live" as Marcie and Michael's wedding song

Brier's "Heartbreaker" a Heart Pleaser.......2006-12-04
Prime Cuts: When It's Real, I Survived You, Wrecked
Ever since hip hop and rap have had eclipsed the mainstream music scene, many traditional rockers have either turned to country (a la Michelle Branch of the Wreckers) or they are out of a recording label. Thank God for artists like Kathy Brier, who despite trends have released a consummate rock record that harkens back to the 80s and early 90s where a guitar riff is actually played rather than sampled. Better known for her role as Marcie Walsh, Brier's claim to fame caught was via her role in ABC's "One Life to Live." Vocally, Brier has invested a full-bodied approach to her material with the emotional intensity of a LeAnn Rimes and the austute pentration of a Taylor Dayne. However, this disc's pride of place is in the songs: against the milieu of non-melodic flare in today's pop music, these paeans are impeccably written with distinguishable hooks and memorable lines.
Perhaps the track that has caused the greatest clamor is the Diane Warren-penned "When It's Real." With all the imprints of this legendary writer, "When It's Real" starts off as a gentle ballad building up to a crescendo of a celebratory note at the discovery of true love. However, the haunting Warren connection makes its apparition again on "I Survived You." Though not written by Warren, this mid-tempo rocker with its cumulative intensity bolstered to its max at the chorus sounds like the Warren-penned Whitney Houston hit "I Learned from the Best." While the album opener "Wrecked" showcases some ferocious emoting in front of some serious guitar virtuoso as a broken hearted Brier lays the blame on her own choice. "O City," on the other hand, is a bluesy ballad dealing again with the issue of departure. However, this time he leaves not because of another woman, but the lure of the city and its urban lifestyle; a track that could well service country radio. Lest one thinks that this is a "victim"-style collection of songs, "Bend," a slow grinding ballad, finds a toughen-up Brier building fences around her heart refusing to "bend" for her no-good paramour.
Brier takes a wry turn with the hidden track "I'm a Brick Wall." Inspired by her dad who told Brier to embrace her larger frame, "I'm a Brick Wall" an Aretha Franklin R&B-like romp, in a comical yet noteworthy way challenges us to accept our bodies as they are. While the anthemic "A Chance to Change the World" with its stately drum beat and propulsive guitar riffs, essays an inspirational message of significance that ought to strengthen disillusioned hearts. However, not all the tracks excel: "Now," a piano-based ballad ought to be a welcoming addition, but it's tainted by the irregular chord changes. While the Jeff Cohen, Frank Myers and Boots Ottestad penned "Untouchable" sounds more like a slick Nashville reject with its average melody.
In may ways, Brier's CD is a standout. Unlike many rock albums which tend to yield to the temptation of having hip hop influences, this effort is unfettered pure rock with some tinges of R&B and country. Futher, despite this being Brier's debut effort, she sings as if her life is dependent on each note. And with songs this good, this by far one of the best CDs that have come by in a long while.
Heartbreaker is a Winnner!!.......2006-07-28
This CD is pheonomenal. Kathy Brier has such an amazing voice she can sing any type of music. The songs are a great mix of Older school Rock and Roll "Any Other Way"( I find myself rocking out to that one all the time when I am stuck in traffic) to ballads "When It's Real" to Pop/Rock "Wrecked" ( which I will not be surprised to hear this on any radio station across the country)"Forgiveness and Bend " are also great pop/Rock tunes. The one song that just got to me was a song called "Now" It is haunting and beautiful you can feel the words from Kathy's performance. Kathy has such a powerful voice it is hard to believe that a such a big voice comes out of such a tiny person. The bonus track is an awesome surprise as well.
This CD will be a great addition to any collection I strongly suggest it.
What a fab CD!.......2006-07-28
This cd will not only knock your socks off but melt your heart as well. Kathy Brier has a phenomenal voice with the grace of Billie Holiday to the edginess of Janis Joplin. Its a sensational collection of songs from Bend to the classiness of When Its Real (two of my favs!), all the while being contemporary and hip with today's sounds. Great Buy!!!!!!!!
Fantastic.......2006-07-28
Kathy Brier's voice is amazing. Every song has a different sound and feeling and each one has you feeling a different emotion. I Survived You..inspiring. O'City...reflective and Brick House? well, it's just fun and so is that little giggle at the end of it. Overall, a fantastic CD and a must buy. Another big plus if your a Broadway or One Life to Live fan.

CLASSIC Classic Rock.......2007-02-15
Theres not many that can match Paul Rogers' soul on the microphone. He is without a doubt one of the greatest vocalists of the 70s. This album is everything anyone could want in classic rock and now I'm going to order tons of sobs and fire and water. This album is amazing. Standout tracks include Wishing Well, Easy On My Soul, Heartbreaker, Come Together in The Morning, and 7 Angels. This album is not pretentious at all but it should be because it rocks so f'in hard. It hasn't left my CD changer in weeks.
Why did I wait so long?.......2006-07-30
My need to get "Wishing Well" which I will admit is one of my favourite songs, necessitated me to buy this album. I have heard Rogers and Kossoff many times before on other Free discs, but had missed this one. The title track is soulful, others are meaningful, and Wishing Well just rocks! What I truly liked is to hear Rogers voice as it was when Free really where a supergroup, and to see how many of the tracks could have been Bad Company songs without any problems at all. So why only 4 stars? Because there are only 8 tracks on the album, and I would have loved more.
Should be one of your "desert Island" music selections.......2006-05-15
This is one the best blues/rock albums ever recorded.
Every note, every song on this disk is outstanding.
Paul Kossof's guitar leads rival anyone's,
anywhere.Paul Rodgers one of the best lead singers of any
era. You do not need to spend the extra $ required for the
version of this disk with "bonus tracks" ---this version stands up just fine on it's own.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY A VERY PICKY INDIVIDUAL--MYSELF.Spend a small portion
of your entertainment $ for this one.One listen and you iz
hooked.
FREE-Heartbreaker.......2006-02-28
This is one of my favorite FREE albums. Although Fire and Water is my favorite heartbreaker comes in a close second along with Tons of Sobs. I recommend this CD from anyone who is a Bad Company Fan (with Paul Rodgers).
Incredible!.......2005-04-10
Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson covered 2 of the songs on this album during the Tattooed Millionaire tour. I bought this CD to hear what the original songs sounded like. Blown away cannot describe the feeling I got when first hearing this disc. Come Together In the Morning, Heartbreaker and Easy on My Soul are some of the best songs made by ANY group.

His Best Album.......2004-09-14
The music might break your heart, but the sound will enrich your soul on this post Whiskeytown solo debut by Ryan Adams on Ultradisc UHR SACD with GAIN 2 mastering from MFSL. The melding of influences ranging from Paul Westerberg, Merle Haggard, Robyn Hitchcock, Steve Earle and especially Gram Parsons yields an exceptional, stunning debut from one of today's most aristically pertinent & popular recording artists. At times raucous, wistful, & raspy, and at other times simply sweet, Adams fully employs a top notch acoustic based band inclusive of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. A guest spot featuring none other than Emmylou Harris lends a particularly tender yearning to "Oh My Sweet Caroline." Another unearthed classic recording brought to full sonic fruition via MFSL's acclaimed Discovery Series.

Customer Reviews:
one of the greatest early British hard rock albums.......2006-07-27
This album deserves to be (at least) as popular as Led Zeppelin's first two albums or Deep Purple's "In Rock" and "Machinehead" albums. Simply great. And by the way, you should check out Ten Years After's "A Space in Time" too.
The high point of the album, which includes many fine tracks, is "Come Together in the Morning". And the original version of "Wishing Well" is so much more powerful than the better-known version by Gary Moore, which just doesn't do the song justice. While many reviewers rave about Paul Kossoff's guitar work, I think this album is a real showcase for Paul Rodgers, one of rock music's greatest singers.
Heartbroken more like it..........2006-03-15
A patched up Free attempts to carry on as normal, but the chemistry is just not there - Fraser is gone and Tetsu struggles / doesn't even try to make the most of the opportunity given to him. Rather than contribute some great bass ideas, he is content just to plod along; Kossoff plays on 5 of the 8 tracks. Gone is the heart wrenching melody and beautiful vibrato of his playing. He's running on remote control. It sounds like he's slumped in the corner of the studio stoned out of his head; Bundrick writes 2 tracks / shares the credits on two others. His work sounds like album filler put there to satisfy the band's contractual requirements. The whole album is Lazarus with a triple bypass.
The only standout track is the EXCELLENT 'Wishing Well'... the other songs are just musical ideas i.e verse and chorus cobbled into a finished song... another album to buy if you can't stand blank spaces in your Free CD collection... What a tragic waste...

THIS IS TRULY A CLASSIC ALBUM THAT NO ONE SHOULD BE WITHOUT.EVERY SONG ON THE CD IS EXCEPTIONAL AND IT IS THE GREATEST SWAN SONG I HAVE HEARD TO-DATE. FREE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST BAND OF THEIR ERA AND PAUL RODGERS HAS A VOICE THAT IS AMAZING.PAUL KOSOFF'S GUITAR WORK IS TRULY SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED GUTIAR AROUND AND HE WAS HIGHLY UNDERRATED . HIS PRESENTATION ON THIS ALBUM EXCEEDS ANY OF HIS PREVIOUS WORK AND RIP BROTHER I KNOW YOU ARE ROCKING AND PLAYING WITH THE GREAT ONE HIMSELF -MY MAKER MUST HAVE BEEN A HARD HEARTBREAKER-

Though in the final throes of collapse, and riven by internal disputes, with `Heartbreaker' Free produced their final album, which against the odds has proved to be a minor classic. Although Paul Rodgers' vocals, Simon Kirke's drums and Paul Kossoff's lead guitar remained, a new bass player Tetsu had taken the place of original member Andy Fraser, and John `Rabbit' Bundrick was added on keyboards. Rabbit's contribution is critical to this album, his dramatic grand piano and organ work creating a much bigger sound than on the band's previous albums, and leading to `Heartbreaker' sometimes being dubbed Free's `stadium album'. Among the best tracks are the powerful `Wishing well', `Seven angels' and `Common mortal man', but the stand-out track must be `Come together in the morning' which is dominated by Rodgers' soulful vocals and the aching, tortured beauty of Kossoff's guitar soloing, which expresses most eloquently his inner turmoil. It is a travesty that Paul Kossoff was omitted from the list of band members in the album credits, considering that he played on most of the record and had been at the core of the band's sound from the beginning. If the album's original 8 songs were not enough, this reissue also contains several additional tracks of note, including a remix of `Wishing well', the single B-side `Let me show you', and two rehearsal versions of songs from the album.

2007 release from this London band who add their own twist to the Americana sound. Their use of piano, guitar, organ and melodic harmony-laden songs may recall Kings Of Leon, but their distinct Englishness adds understated charm to the songs. Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01
Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.
I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.
Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18
For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.
Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20
A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.
Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.
Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.
It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!
