As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

they made an awsome cd! the only thing i diddnt like was that they diddnt make an edited version that came out on cd! i wish they did cuz somtimes my mom gets mad at me for listining to music with bad words but somtimes she doesnt
Fun!.......2007-03-13
This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.
We listen to this in the Operating Room and it makes the atmosphere less tense.
NOTHING LESS THAN 5 STARS.......2007-02-13
New to this genre, I am blown away! Variety, beat, talent... I can not get to my other cds. CAN NOT agree with other unimpressed reviewers. Listen once, listen twice... Listen to that complex music and those words!!!!
Pretty good.......2007-01-31
I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

Burdon becomes Black-Man's burden.......2006-04-09
Here we're offered a clean and more polished Burdon backed up by some of the greatest musicians of the day. The Black-Man's Burdon didn't produce any hits, but it did showcase the raw power of War itself. Although Burdon's rhetoric is held somewhat in check here, it still manages to get in the way of the band at times on this 1970 MGM release. Eric Burdon & War's second offering (a double LP) would also be their last together. Burdon would never sound this poignant in his career again, and Spill The Wine (from Burdon declares "War") would be remembered as the only relevant material Burdon performed in the post-Animals era.
A point worth mentioning is that it's War's noodling (The Bird And The Squirrel and Nuts, Seeds & Life) in the wake of the classic Beautiful New Born Child that hold your attention. Setting you up for the relentless Out Of Nowhere (that should've been released as a single). In the twilight of the hippie era Jerry Goldstein produced some of the most social and introspective material of the year. Gun hints at a country sick and tired of the Vietnam conflict, while Sun/Moon soothes the listener for the pop sounding Pretty Colors. War's innovative fusion sound would carry them through the entire decade of the 70's, producing a string of 8 gold records in a row.

five reasons to add this one to your all time good ones:
1. Sun/Moon
2. Nights in white satin
3. Spirit
4. Pretty colors
5. to remember not only Billie Holiday or Charlie Parker but also the black man's Burdon. Cheers!!!
war rocks.......2005-02-17
Eric Burdon can be a little annoying on some of the tracks, he seems a little full of himself. But when he works with War in a more integrated fashion, it is a fantastic match. The song cycle of Pretty Colors, Jimbo and Gun is one of the most powerful marraiges of psychedelia and soul ever. Feel the heat rise.
The cover of "Paint It Black" is also really cool, but a little out there with the wacky Burdon lyrics. Recommended album!
Boring.......2004-01-21
This is the worst of the 3 albums Eric made with War. Way too long songs that keep on repeating themselves. The Paint It Black Medley is explosivly energetic, and makes at least disc 1 wort to own. The relatively short track 'Out Of Nowhere' is also found here with a lot of deep lyrics. The rest of the album is just too boring to me. Eric himself hates this album, and so do I (almost). The other two albums, Love Is All Around and Eric Burdon Decleares War, is much better. Especially Love Is All Around.
Just one outstanding song........2002-10-11
I bought this CD only for "They Can't Take Away Our Music," which is a very powerful and beautiful song about black music in America. It got a fair amount of radio play at the end of 1970, which is when I started liking it. Interestingly, I still have never heard a single comment about what African-Americans thought about this song. I'm white and I love the song. The rest of the album was definitely disappointing, although a few songs have a nice Caribbean sound with guiro, like "Pretty Colors." The cover songs "Paint It Black" and "Nights in White Satin" are pointlessly long, too loosely structured, and add no new interest; they seem like trashy afterthoughts meant only as filler. However, Eric Burdon does all these songs with soul and seriousness, so the album's not really bad, just not very commercial.

Customer Reviews:
Favorite disc by Favorite singer!.......2006-11-29
This whole disc is just so delicious. Not only to my subjective ears, either. Whenever I'm playing this in my salon, my customer always asks, "Who IS that?" Each song is different, gorgeously produced with a big, soulful 1970s sound that Creed Taylor had imagined would unite Jazz with R&B. And what amazing songs: starting with the angry "Justified"-"'cuz when I met ya, baby, Florence Nightingale shoulda been your Nurse but ole Red Cross Me, I'm gonna take the job but now I think I'm to the point I need one myself, really!" Mmm! Carolyn Franklin (Aretha's sister) wrote "Too Many Roads Between Us" surely up there with "Neither One of Us..." as one of the saddest love songs ever. "You Could Have Had Me..." by Leonard Feather could have been seedn as kissing up to the auther of The Jazz Encyclopedia so Esther hangs out on the song for almost eight minutes and finds meat never thought to be on that bone! "I've Only Known A Stranger" Wow! Breath taking. Old style Jazz with Duke Ellington's "I Got It Bad" but feel it, funk it, make it new. Go Esther! A big surprise for us old people who used to listen to Esther on LP or 8track- a NEW song "Tangle In Your Lifeline" is as personal and lovely as anything whe ever recorded. When I bought this cd, it was only available as an import at $22.95. Now you can get it for under $11! What are you waiting for?
Esther's 3rd CTI Masterpiece!.......2004-02-28
This was the third album that Esther cut for Creed Taylor's CTI album. It marked a change from the previous two in that the string arrangements were undertaken for the first time with this artist, by Bob James; it's a subtle but very important change. Secondly the material stretches out from the straight-ahead R&B to embrace a range of varying styles. This being the case, the album is not as 'immediate' as the previous two, but is just as satisfying when it yields all its nuances. My favourite tracks are her reading of Bill Wither's "Justified" which is a great version. There's a particularly sensual and burning version of "I've only known a stranger" and a straight ahead jazz version of Leonard Feather's "You could have had me baby".While I'm writing about it I should also mention the title track, which is a Joe Cocker track given a particularly good makeover. That's four out of the seven tracks mentioned already, so when you consider that there's a bonus unreleased track as well out of the remaining three,it makes you realise what good value it is. Add in an excellent set of sleeve notes, and this is another 'must have' Esther Phillips album!

A side project from Low guitarist-vocalist Alan Sparhawk, the Black Eyed Snakes don't deliver dreamy acoustics--they're are a rock & roll act through and through. With Sparhawk as the singing ax man again, Brad Nelson on drums, and Bobby Olson on guitar, the Snakes are one down and dirty punk-blues act. For fans of bands like the White Stripes, Zen Guerrilla, and the Immortal Lee County Killers, the Snakes speed through garage blues, turning the distortion high on both the guitars and the snarly vocals. On their debut CD, they deliver five originals, four covers, and one song Low fans have probably heard before (a much quieter version of "Lordy" appeared on the Low/Dirty Three In the Fishtank CD). The covers are impressively varied; Moby's "Honey," the Fall's "My New House," and Muddy Waters's classic "Mannish Boy" are all twisted into sweaty Snakes stompers. The final song, "Cheerios on the Floor," lightens the mood a little, but overall, It's the Black Eyed Snakes is a superbly intense record that shakes with just the right amount of insane energy to deliver the blues with a volatile new edge. --Jennifer Maerz
Customer Reviews:
Watch out! The 'Snakes have bite!.......2002-10-21
Like a masterful puppeteer, the 'Snakes will bring life to your body and make it dance. Whether it's foot stomp'in or head thrash'in, you're certainly not going to be sitting still while listening to this CD. Right from the get-go with the 'Snakes original "Chicken-Bone George", the CD grabs a hold of you and won't let go. In fact, it is with their original material that the 'Snakes shine most brightly. Like bookends, the first and last tracks are polar opposites. Where "Chicken-Bone George" is a heart pumping thrill ride, the last track, "Cheerios on the Floor" is quiet, playfull and reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Seamus". And right smack in the middle are slower blues riffs equally full of distortion, steel guitars and harmonicas. If you're feeling like you've got the blues, pop in the 'Snakes and you won't be alone. In fact, if you have a Quick Time Player, you can see them play live on this disk. A true must have for your collection.
