Though the esteemed guitarist hasn't released an album since 1990--leaving his career as a recording and touring musician to study violinmaking--David Bromberg's feel for folk and blues tradition and his encyclopedic command of it remain undiminished. This is a back-to-basics affair, just vocals and guitar, as Bromberg puts his own stamp on material from seminal influences such as the Rev. Gary Davis ("I Belong to the Band," "Trying to Get Home") and Bob Dylan ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"), one of the many recording artists who employed Bromberg as a sideman. Though the tricky time shifts of "Buck Dancer's Choice" show his dexterity, there isn't much showoff guitar here (and no guitar at all on the a cappella "Moonshiner" and "Lonesome Roving Wolves"). He's singing better than ever, from the falsetto on Robert Johnson's "Kind Hearted Blues" to the expressiveness of his own title track, as he sounds more than ever like one of the masters he began by trying to emulate. Three long-awaited words: David Bromberg's back!

Roots music fans will rejoice in the release of "Try Me One More Time," the first new CD in 17 years by guitarist/vocalist David Bromberg, a master practitioner of folk, blues, bluegrass and other musical genres. This new recording is undiluted David: one man, one acoustic guitar, and a repertoire of mostly traditional material performed with the intimate, assured touch of a musician who has nothing to prove.

Originally a "must-have" session man for everyone from Bob Dylan to Dion and subsequently a hard-touring bandleader and recording artist with an enthusiastic following, Bromberg gradually phased himself out of the continual record-tour-record cycle starting in 1980. "I got burned out," he reflects. "And I didn't want to be one of those musicians who ends up `phoning it in.' Music was too important to me to treat it that way."

So he switched his focus from performing to studying, moving to Chicago in 1980 to learn violin-making. Based in the Windy City until 2002, when he moved to Delaware to open a violin shop, Bromberg has continued to tour periodically, but has mostly stayed away from recording studios, with 1990's "Sideman Serenade" his last album until now.

On "Try Me One More Time," Bromberg harkens back to the acoustic folk and blues music of his early days on the mid-'60s Greenwich Village folk scene, a period when he guided the blind gospel-blues singer Reverend Gary Davis to concerts and churches in exchange for guitar lessons. Bromberg performs two of "the Rev's" compositions on his new CD - "I Belong to the Band" and "Trying to Get Home" - as well as songs written by Robert Johnson, Elizabeth Cotton, Tommy Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, sometime Bromberg employer Bob Dylan ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh . . ."), and songs from the traditional realm, including two exquisitely rendered instrumentals ("Buck Dancer's Choice," "Hey Bub"). The title track is Bromberg's first recording of a song he wrote more than 30 years ago.

In liner notes as conversational as his distinctive, low-key vocals, Bromberg maintains that this CD is the first record he's made where he "wasn't trying to impress anybody . . . I'm just doing the tunes." Nonetheless, the outcome can't fail to delight listeners who appreciate an understated virtuoso playing and singing the music he loves.

Having been a David Bromberg fan for 30 years now, I have seen him appear alone, with a few people,and all the way to a 10 pc+ band. This album brings David and his primo guitar and vocals back to us, full circle.
The title song,was one of the first songs David had ever written, but finally recorded and it really projects true Bromberg at his best.
If you enjoyed any of the other acoustical Bromberg CD's your going to love this one, Hey david Try This one more time for us!

One can only hope that this is the first in a new series of solo albums. More Bromberg songs, more Dylan songs, more instrumental mastery, more,more, more! I've all but worn out this CD--how long will I have to wait for more????

I've seen David Bromberg twice, years ago and used to have some of his music on tape. Seventeen years is a long time to be away, but this album is great and I hope to be able to see him live again. Talented on so many instruments!

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

In "All I Ask Of You," he excitingly explodes like a bursting water balloon. His duet with Carly Simon ("Last Night of the World") works in an intergalactic way--music makers from separate planets can successfully collaborate. In "Send In the Clowns," we are reminded of the tune's prettiness; while others find a poignantly delicate moment, Domingo's personal revelation is the size of Mt. Olympus. And why not? He is a god of song. An exception is made for "Our Love is Here to Stay," winner of the most-likely-to-appear-in-an-elevator award. Overall, a dazzling music experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

This is a compilation of lovely Broadway songs, beautifully sung. I liked most of the selections in every way--singing, orchestration, etc. I found the piece from "Miss Saigon" ("The Last Night in the World"), with a moving duet with Domingo and Carly Simon, to be astonishingly beautiful. I was surprised that these two could collaborate so well reminiscent of Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza), I have enjoyed repetitive listening of this track. The only downer, in my view, was "Over There." Sad to say, Placido does not do justice to George M. Cohan. For reasons I don't completely understand, he substitutes "The boys are coming" for the very triumphant "The Yanks are coming" line, which is the heart of the song. Toss this ridiculous mistake out, maybe a fifth star.

I found this one in my library system and checked it out because of "So In Love" -- and quickly fell in love with the rest of it! There are classically trained opera singers who cannot pull off singing Broadway, but Domingo is not one of them. Granted, the idea of hearing "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin'" sung with an Italian accent seems a little strange, since everyone knows that a cowboy is supposed to be singing it, but I think Domingo's accent adds to the charm of the songs.

I only gave this album four stars because I didn't care for the arrangements of the songs from "West Side Story" and also because the combination of Domingo and Carly Simon seemed mismatched. The duet with Rebecca Luker, however, in "All I Ask Of You," is what I would consider the highlight of the CD. Their voices blend so well and they have the same classic style. Ted Huffman's boy soprano adds a lot to "Try To Remember," enhancing the soaring prettiness of the melody. The arrangement of "Send In The Clowns" is a masterpiece, while Domingo sings it with convincing sadness. Also his portrayal of "Our Love Is Here To Stay" has the gentle simplicity that I believe the Gershwins meant for it.

As for the rest of the songs, they are just plain GOOD! All in all this is a very enjoyable recording and it goes to the top of my wish list.

This is a very distinctive album that either attracts or disappoints. It's certainly not Leo's best work ever. Personally I would reserve that distinction for a record like Guitar Music, Greenhouse, One Guitar No Vocal, or 6 and 12 string guitar. But it's a delight for many of us who prefer his instrumental compositions and loathe the introduction of a drum track to an otherwise captivating foray into guitar virtuosity.
In general, Try and Stop Me is a creative departure from Leo's earlier stuff. But it retains the medium he most excells at: solo acoustic guitar. The tunes are beautifully played and often very well arranged. And to some extent I think it is the abstraction of the music that makes me want to listen to it again and again. Plus it is clear that he is improvising on some of the tracks. While this may lead to songs that are sometimes hard to follow such as Mora Roa, Unbar, or Axolotl, I like hearing what Leo plays like when he is just practicing and experimenting (though I must admit that I sometimes feel that way when I go to a show of his also). And then you get songs like Bristol Sloth, Then, Monopoly, and the peerless Gewerbegebeit. The vocal track The Banks of Marble is even a success. One thing I really like about this album is the movement and flexibility which most of the songs have. In songs such as Mora Roa, Leo first expresses a melody, then slowly elaborates and transforms it into something quite different but still recognizable.
I chalk up the mixed reception of this album to the fact that Leo's music is so eclectic. Different listeners like him for different reasons. I'm shocked that people enjoy That's What, Great Big Boy, Balance, or a lot of the stuff on Ice Water and Time Step, but some people really get off on that stuff. But haven't those folks had their day in the sun for long enough with albums such as Standing in my Shoes (featuring Leo's old material, other people's old material, and miscellaneous soullessly overly studio-ized material)? Personally, I was overjoyed to find that Leo had put out an album which, notwithstanding some familiar licks and riffs, broke such new, creative ground.

... even if you're a big leo kottke fan from 20+ years ago. as a guitarist, I like to listen to guitar music. I really don't like kottke's singer/songwriter material. there's nothing wrong with it, but it's just not my "thing." I've listened to leo kottke albums off and on over the years and this is the first one that I HAD to buy the second after I heard the last note of "the bristol sloth." I see a lot of complaints from other reviewers that kottke keeps "tuning down" his guitar more and more with each successive album. I rather like it. there are VERY few solo guitarists that can keep notes and passages audible and controlled while playing a guitar in the register that much of this material is written and recorded in. it was this that really grabbed my brain as I listened to the album - and I'm a big Michael Hedges fan... hedges used a lot of low register tunings (although admittedly not as low as some on this album) and often there would be so much information being conveyed in his solo pieces that a lot of it would get lost because it tended to run together into one single sound. what's so amazing about "try and stop me" is the clarity with which kottke pounds all these low register notes out of his guitar. (...and could the title also be a message he's conveying to his long term fans who don't want to hear him depart from his 30 year old material...?) The main reason I like this album so much is probably because I'm a relative newcomer to leo kottke in the fact that I'm not already a big fan... and also the fact that his guitar tone is quite comparable to being hit in the face with a prison pillowcase full of unopened soft drink cans.... if you love solo guitar music and can appreciate leo kottke's more experimental side, this is a fantastic album.

Based on the previous reviews, Leo Kottke is both blessed and cursed with the reputation of being one of the best fingerpicking guitarists of the last thirty-five years. He is revered by a legion of fans, but it would appear that many of them (the amazon.com reviewers, anyway) aren't happy unless he keeps repeating 1971's 6- AND 12-STRING GUITAR.

At 59, Kottke is still performing and releasing a new album every few years. TRY AND STOP ME is similar in vein to his last solo effort, 1999's ONE GUITAR, NO VOCALS. In fact, except for the final track (recorded with Los Lobos), this is unadorned Kottke--just Kottke and his guitar creating his unique mixture of folk, jazz and blues.

The eleven tracks feature eight Kottke compositions and three covers. The first cover is "Mockingbird Hill," an instrumental version of a 1951 gold record for Patti Page. Next is his third recording of Carla Bley's "Jesus Maria." [Kottke first recorded this for 1990's THAT'S WHAT and then as a part of 1998's guitar album SOUNDS OF WOOD AND STEEL.] The third cover is an old Weavers' song, "The Banks of the Marble," which features Kottke's warm baritone vocal.

While I would have enjoyed a few more vocals, this album has everything I look for in a Kottke album--a master musician playing his guitar with passion, skill and beauty. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars AN ABSTRACT NEW GROOVE.......2004-11-02

Aside from Lou Reed's infamous "Metal Machine Music" I'm not sure what a "contractural obligation" record is, but "Try and Stop Me" is no such a thing. And even if it is, I doubt it affected the music. Here's what I'm hearing:

Kottke's music and playing -- unusually difficult to separate from one another -- have always tended to be remarkably clear, concise and at the same time complex. On this CD I hear many of the same elements, with the new addition of a much higher degree of ABSTRACTION than any of his other work. The harmonic and rhythmic content is being pulled in directions that are frankly atypical of what Kottke is known for, and the resulting music really can't be approached the way a listener might approach other, earlier work. The abstraction is emphasized all the more forcefully by the little snippets of familiar pieces tucked in here and there: those comfortable sets of notes set suddenly in less comfortable surroundings have a profoundly interesting, almost disorienting character, especially on the first few listens.

After so many records over so many years, Kottke still has the important ability to be self-critical about his work and to seek new ways to articulate one of the remarkable talents of our lifetimes. No let down here...

I agree with the other reviewers who said this album is a little uninspired -- just a lot of fancy pickin'.

Kottkephiles like me think that's better than 99% of music out there, but I have to agree, it's a "take-no-chances" album.

Sigmund Romberg isn't in fashion today, but he was one of the founders of what became modern musical comedy, and in listening to this compilation of songs from three of his best-known operettas, you can understand why. Kirsten's soaring soprano and MacRae's rich baritone combine flawlessly to give the very feel that contemporary audiences must have gotten when they attended a performance of a Romberg work (MacRae also starred in the film version of "Desert Song"). The best pieces on the disc are the duets, some of which can give you authentic chills ("Deep in My Heart, Dear," "Wanting You"), and MacRae's thrilling solos ("Serenade," "The Riff Song," "Marianne," "Stouthearted Men," and the tango-esque "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise"), but Kirsten's renditions of "Romance," "The Saber Song," "The Girl on the Prow," "One Kiss," and the classic "Lover, Come Back to Me" are almost equally good. I've replayed this collection at least 20 times in the last month and I'll do it again. If hearing it doesn't it make you want more Romberg, your tastes are obviously not for classic operetta. Highly recommended.

Kirsten was a first class opera singer who sings this music with technique, voice and style. MacRae has a pretty voice- but I miss the true operatic baritone depth, volume of sound and range of Merrill, Tibbett or Nelson Eddy in this music.

This album is not a "performance" but a studio recording of music from three operettas by the great Sigmund Romberg. The singing is superb. Gordon MacRae is a known quantity from his role in the movie version of "Oklahoma" and his voice is never disappointing. Dorothy Kirsten is less well known these days but her voice is well suited for operetta. This album is a deal as it contains most or all of the music of Sigmund Romberg and his lyricists for three operettas, "Desert Song", "New Moon" and " Student Prince". The only quibble with the album is that it begins with the weakest selection ("Student Prince") and if one plays it all the way through it's a long wait for "Desert Song" and the extraordinarily tuneful "New Moon". Most of the tunes are known these days (if at all) from instrumental "mood music" recordings. The singing of MacRae and Kirsten is enunciated well enough so one may enjoy lyrics as well, by the likes of Oscar Hammerstein III. The inclusion of all three operettas gives this album an advantage of the often mix-and-match approach to many available Macdonald & Eddy recordings.

I am one of those who, as a great fan and collector of operetta songs, find this album (actually a compilation of 3 LPs from 1963) the single most brilliant one ever recorded.

There are very few singers who could get so completely into the spirit of the songs and characters of operettas as Gordon MacRae. A technically magnificent voice with a phenomenal range, vibrant intensity and great warmth and sincerity - the rare singer whose performances all felt spontaneous and who could go from caressing the ear one moment to singing in the most powerful tones the next - all in a glorious legit voice of course. His rousing numbers like "The Riff Song" from The Desert Song and "Stout-Hearted Men" from New Moon are so exilarating that they actually conjure up a larger-than-life vision. His haunting "Softly as in the Morning Sunrise" obliterates all other versions and in terms of passion expressed in song, it would be difficult to surpass his rendition of the Desert Song.

Kudos also of course to the everlasting charm, grace and talent of the great Dorothy Kirsten who sounds perfectly convincing and fetching as the youthful heroines she portrays even though she was already fiftyish at the time this was recorded. Her solos of "One Kiss", "Romance" and "Lover Come Back to Me" are nothing short of superb and convey the longing of her characters beautifully. Truly enchanting.

As someone who loves to compare as many versions as possible of the great musicals and operettas, I can truthfully say that I have never heard more exquisite versions of those songs anywhere. While many versions I have heard elsewhere seemed either over the top or emotionally detached, these ring with true romantic ardor and the arrangements are beautiful. If the beautiful duets like "Wanting You" from New Moon and "Deep in My Heart, Dear" from The Student Prince don't send shivers up your spine, nothing ever will. They litterally take your breath away.

I do feel, however, that a couple of the songs from the earlier MacRae version (from the early 50s) of The Student Prince rank a bit higher than the songs from this version if only for the fact that the arrangements of the "Student Marching Song and The Drinking Song" were livelier and performed not just by the chorus as they are here, but led by Gordon MacRae at his very best. I miss hearing him on those when I play this CD. (Most of the songs from his earlier versions of The Desert Song and The Student Prince are available on various CD compilations. His earlier version of New Moon has not been released on CD yet, but can be found on vinyl).

The Robert Wagner chorale is absolutely outstanding and does a splendid job throughout.

Yes, I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves operettas, melodious songs and rich singing voices!

      Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
      It was worth the wait.

      The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
      I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
      The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

      I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

      There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

      But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

      First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

      Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

      On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
      So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

      The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

      There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

      With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

      Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

      In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

      Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

      Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

      Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

      Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

      * Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

      * Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

      * ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

      * Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

      * The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.


      Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

      "Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
      Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
      ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
      Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

      This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
      The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
      My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
      A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!
