4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking lyricism over incredible production.......2007-06-01

You might recognize Mad CJ Mac's name from a few high profile guest appearances he made during the 90s on some other west coast artists' albums. His 1995 debut, "True Game," was released on Rap-A-Lot Records, making him one of the Houston label's few west coast artists during their mid-90s heyday. Mad CJ Mac is an immensely talented individual, both on the mic and on the mixing boards. As a producer, he has a great formula, his sounds are polished, funky, and consistent. He tends to use the same instrumentation on each track, usually consisting of a high, whiny synth, rolling bass, a hard beat, and often a choppy sax or horn. His sound is strictly g-funk, but it's not quite as laidback as Warren G or Dr. Dre's early beats, they have a harder feel. Although the beats are really great throughout the whole album, a few sound very similar, and they're actually a little too consistent. On the mic you'll find CJ Mac to be an enticing MC. He has a nice delivery, deep and commanding. He has a lot of radical ideas and speaks with experience about life on the streets and drug trade. I enjoy him most when he challenges the legal system and talks about incarceration, but he's also really good when he talks about the hood and the lifestyle. What's a little disappointing is a few tracks where he falls into clichéd and average gangsta rap subject matter. I get the feeling that he's too good of a rapper to ever have to rap like that. "True Game" has a few flaws, but there are a handful of absolutely classic tracks that make this album totally worth the pickup, and the beats on this album make it worth it alone. Musically and lyrically, this album is really a gem and it's a severely underappreciated west coast album.

Following a totally dope intro, the album begins with the lyrical gem "Let My N...s Out the Pen." On this song, CJ is truly powerful. He criticizes the American prison system and injustice in the legal system. He addresses government conspiracies that really make you think. On one verse, he states that the only reason there's a "war on drugs" is because the government doesn't profit from drug money because it's untaxed. At the end, he slams California's three-strikes law as "unjust, prejudiced bulls...t," after complaining about the unfairness in sentencing. He really makes you think and makes great arguments for his cases on this song, he's radical yet convincing, and I think that's a sign of a great rapper. On the title track, CJ speaks of his experience and wisdom of the streets over a fast and synthed-out beat, it's not the best song on the disc but I definitely like it. The next song is an absolute classic, "Come and Take a Ride," a collaboration with fellow South Central rapper and labelmate Poppa LQ. The beat is absolutely perfect, a laidback, vibesy g-funker with an awesome synth-line. It's got an awesome chilled-out vibe but maintains a raw feel to it, both rappers' deliveries sound great and this song is just awesome. "Realism" and "Powda Puff" are two solid tracks, lyrically they're not standouts but the awesome production makes these songs keepers, especially the later, a rough diss track with a bumping, sax and string-laced beat. My favorite song on the album is "Losin' My Mind," a really engaging song both musically and lyrically. The beat is gorgeous, a bouncy, woozy track with sax and great electronic instrumentation and a pounding synth line on the hook. CJ speaks of urban paranoia a la "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me," his raps are insightful and emotional. At this point, the album sort of loses it's focus, and although the beats remain tight, lyrically it does not quite remain as excellent as the first half. "N...s Can't See Thee Ahh!" is another nice woozy track, he represents his hometown and coast. It's not a real highlight but again a very solid track, showing his consistency as a producer and rapper. "Tryina Survive" is a pretty average song about struggles in the dangerous ghetto, and "Trust No" is kind of forgettable. "Dead Man Walkin" is a return to form, a heartfelt and musically excellent song. The album closes with the pretty good "I Can't Stand a Rat."

Rap-A-Lot couldn't exert the same pull on the west coast as they could in the south, so this album went under the radar despite its quality during the nineties and remains really slept-on to this day. I highly recommend this one to fans of west coast rap, his lyrics will appeal to 2Pac fans and anybody with ears could enjoy his awesome production. While he would go on to release one more album, 1999's Platinum Game, this was the crown jewel of his career, but with the flood of California g-funk in '95, it was swept under the rug with other gems like Jayo Felony's Take a Ride, Twinz' Conversation, and B.G. Knocc Out & Dresta's Real Brothas. 1995 was a great year for hip hop, especially on the west coast, and this reflects the great state of rap at the time. There are points on this album where you'll find yourself thinking it doesn't get much better than this, and it's true, there is some incredible hip hop on "True Game." If you get the chance to pick this up, I highly recommend a purchase, this music is thought-provoking and musically excellent.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most hidden treasures in west coast rap.......2005-06-11

Mad CJ Mac True Game was the best album few heard about. What makes this cd so enticing is not only good production (classic g funk circa 1994-1995) but Mad CJ is one of the most intelligent mc's I have ever heard. He feels strongly about the incarceration of many black males, and how the system is seemingly set up as a viscious cycle more than a mechanism for rehabilitation. His argument is well structured and compelling. This album about awareness to this and many other issues. The thought critique is very in depth, and gives us accounts of abhorrent instances of institutional racism. "Come and Take a Ride" is the feel good song, which is classic g funk. This album is a twist of g-funk and innovative progressive thought. Being that this album came out in the "renaissance" of rap (94-95)and it still ranks in my top 10 of all time says a lot. I give it five stars, and a must for any hip hop fan.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star Hit and Underrated.......2005-05-23

Mad Cj Mac (now just CJ Mac) spits nothing but fire in his debut album "True Game." "True Game" has angry, hard-core rhymes set over an interesting array of G-Funk beats, ranging from laid back as in "Come and Take a Ride," to jazzy as in "Powda Puff," to bass heavy and menacing as in "I Can't Stand a Rat." Of course, it may be gangsta rap, a genre hardly new in 1995, but CJ Mac throws in his own especially angry persona, which makes the album awesome. The use of the whistly, whiny keyboard synths in about half of the songs adds an even more gangsta feel to the cd! Of course, this album is one of many great non-mainstream albums slept on! Despite being from South Central LA CJ had to holla at Lil' J in H-Town to get this record, and aside from the West Coast mentality here, there is a certain third coast influence on many of the beats like the hella sick "Dead Man Walkin'" and the seriously political "Let My N----s Out Tha Pen" and even the classic track "Come And Take A Ride." All in all, the neat mix of Texas and West Coast beats and CJ's firey flows will satisfy any real hip hop head. Another Rap-A-Lot classic!!

4 out of 5 stars C.J. Mac - True Game.......2005-03-02

7. Losin' My Mind - The first minute and 48 seconds is a skit, Great beat, C.J. comes real nice, hook is good - 4.5/5

8. Can't Cee Thee Ahh! - Good beat, C.J. tears this beat up, hook isn't bad at all - 4.5/5

9. Tryina Survive - Good beat, C.J. comes nice, hook is decent - 4/5

10. Trust No - Great beat, C.J. talks about not trusting anyone, good hook - 4.5/5

13. I Can't Stand a Rat - Great beat, C.J. comes nice, hook is alright - 3.5/5

Overall: 45.5 /55

4 Stars

C.J. put out a good debut album to get into the rap game. The main thing that this album lacks is the hooks, most of the really suck or are borderline average. If they would have been more creative and hard, this album would have been so much better. But don't get me wrong, this album is still good!

4 out of 5 stars Good debut.......2004-11-05

CJ Mac delivers a quality cd for his debut. He was already 30 when it came out but it has some tight west coast beats and he tells his stories well. He gets on the young players in the game saying he been bangin since '79 and used to get birds for $4300. It has a few classics and doesn't feature many people (one song w/ Poppa LQ & 2 chorus sung by some woman). No real weak spots. Neveretheless it is a good CD and a must have for gangsta rap west coast fans.

#2 - 7
#3 - 10 (a classic w/ a tight beat)
#4 - 10 (another classic w/ a tight beat - f/ Poppa LQ)
#5 - 7

#7 - 9.5 (great song w/ a long intro)
#8 - 8

#13 - 8 (talkin' bout snitches)

Whereas most early No Limit product sounded like it had been recorded on dusty four-tracks, Master P broke out the serious cash for Tru, his collaborative project with his two younger brothers, Silkk the Shocker and C-Murder. The production is cacophonous and manages to speed up the hollow San Francisco Bay area bass with some of the jump-up funk of the South. Of all their trife tales, Tru are known best for "I'm Bout It, Bout It," the track that spawned the movie (I'm Bout It), the catchphrase, and the worldview. But apart from that, Tru are at their strongest when bringing in lyrical help from outside, mixing their own thick soup with meaty soup bones (King George and Big Ed on "Anything Goes") or some hot spices (Mia X on "Last Dance"). --Jon Caramanica

5 out of 5 stars The Hardest Crew Record Ever!.......2006-09-26

Even though they're long gone now... this record still has such a great hardcore street feel its unreal. From the cover art to every track on the LP, this defines what a hardcore rap act should be. One of my all time favorites and I'm sure it'll be included in yours as well. If you can get your hands on it, do so. It'll be near impossible to find sooner or later so if you have the chance pick it up. One of the BEST records from the camp. A+

5 out of 5 stars Tru at their best.......2005-05-07

This was trus 3rd album and also their best, excellent tracks and hard lyrics. Master P was on point as were the rest of tru. This was up with the best of what gangsta rap was offering in 95 and was a straight classic. Its nice to hear the others rap with P instead of just him alone too like his solo albums. There are a couple of tracks that aren't too good, but most of the album is heavy with nice beats that you can ride to and nice flows about real life things that go on and you can relate to. They were not the best lyrically, but for gangsta sh#t, it was hard and untouchable. Everyone in tru is real and also do and mean what they say. You have to respect the hustle. You can play this straight through and just chill. No limit at its best and what made it. So if you ain't got this, or if you are wandering about it, just get it. Later!

1 out of 5 stars Light Tinkling by Delicate Fairy Children.......2004-10-19

I expected some heavy-duty crunk mixed with the kind of bad@ss ghetto nastiness that'll kill your granny if she hears it. Instead I find, much to my disappointed surprise, that these two "killas" are reduced to the kind of giggling little patty-cake songs you might hear in a "special" nursery school for rich white children afflicted with Down's Syndrome. Good G*d, it's unbelievable how p*ssified they've become! What the hell happened? Tracks like "Talky Doggie Bow Wow Boo" and "Mommy Bake a Cake for Us" leave one wondering what the f*ck went on at those recording sessions at Wacko's studio in Neverland Ranch. I know that these two hardcore brothas spent some serious time down there, sequestered for months on end, under the complete domination of their Lord and Master, the King of Pop. Maybe he took advantage of their trust and seduced them, breaking their wills and "reconditioning" their minds through sensory deprivation alternated with intense "play dates" in the notorious Rumpus Room (about which some frighteningly Orwellian rumors are currently circulating). Whatever happened down there, the shockingly saccharine results are fully on display in this pitiful album. Oh what noble minds are here o'erthrown!

4 out of 5 stars Tru- True.......2004-01-06

Tru's debut album "True" (1995) opened some eyes back in the day when No Limit was just another unknown record label to many of us. While Master P had been in the game for a number of years, he combined forces with his brothers Silkk the Shocker and C-Murder and collectively they would release three group albums as Tru. This was the first No Limit release I came across. Executive produced by Master P, guest appearances come from Mia X, King George, Mo. B Dick, Tobin "TC" Costen, Big Ed, Uhuru Wright and C-Bo. After the intro, hardcore "Last Dance" feat. Mia X starts things off, a track where Tru talk about murder, drugs and life and death. "That's How We Break Bread" feat. C-Bo is laced with a killer beat. Tru talk about the hustling life on "Living that Life" and "Another Day, Another Dollar" has a laid back beat and is about getting money. "I'm Bout' It, Bout It" is that track that blew up and made people pay attention to Tru, laced with a sick background beat, this is one of those cuts that became an anthem. My favourite track on this album is "Ain't No Glock" a track where C-Murder excels and P drops a nice chorus over an addictive beat. "Would You Take a Bullet for Your Homie" feat. Big Ed is anothers standout track about loyalty and death. The second to last track "Keep It All Good" is a nice feel good track to bump. The album ends with Tru giving shoutouts to fam, friends, industry peoples and God. I enjoyed alot of the production on this release, and while Tru's lyrical content is limited and there is some skip material, overall they came out well on "True" delivering some real standout cuts that still play well many years later.

5 out of 5 stars No Limit at its best.......2003-10-09

Posiibly one of their best albums, this was release back in the day when the No Limit family consisted only of Master P, C-Murder, Silkk, Mr.Serv-on, Mia X and Big Ed. Each one of these rappers has a unique style except maybe Silkk, who is the pretty boy of the group. Master P should have kept his style like this-pure underground music. Again we see excess favoritism to Silkk the sucker. He appears on 11 of the 19 cuts whereas C-Murder is only on 4 cuts. In terms of raw talent, C-Murder is clearly superior to Silkk, but he was always less marketable.
Anyway, the good tracks are 2,4,5,6,8,11,12,13,15,18,19. Trust me if you like true hip hop, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Mack 10's best album to date.......2005-11-30

After hos solid self-titled debut album and the huge success of Westside Connection's "Bow Down" , it was the perfect timing for Mack 10 to release his second album. "Based on a True Story" continues what Bow Down had started - GREAT beats with nothing but West Coast gangsta rap on it. Although Mack 10 lacks Ice Cube and WC's carisma or lyrical abilities, he's still a talented rapper, with a unique voice and high street cred. "Based on a true story" is much beter than his debut, with much much better production and rapping. On this album, Mack 10 sounds the best he's ever sounded - nowdays his rapping is a bit to laid back, lacking emotion - but on this one, Mack One O raps with energy, sounding real hard on quite a few. Lyrically it's all about the streets on this one, drug dealing, killing, hustlin'. No sex songs, no cars songs, just gangsta sh** to the fullest. The production is very impressive. Ant Banks did 4 songs (some of the best are his), Young Tre, Soopafly, Bob Cat, Mack 10 and Ice Cube did the rest. It's West Coast rap at it's highest form and I feel it's a great follow-up to "Bow Down". Guest rappers are AllFrumThaI, Comrads, Ice Cube (on 2 songs and all over the album as well), Snoop Dogg (you can hardly hear his voice on that song, he almost whispers his verse)...I only wish WC was on it too, but it's all good... There's no attempt to go mainstream on this album: It was recorded when West Coast rap was at it's peak, in terms of quality and popularity, so rappers could go on and do their thing without fearing the album won't sell. You won't skip a track on this one, I give you my word, Mack 10's second album is his best solo release ever. Nothing he did after that can match "Based on a true story".

5 out of 5 stars Mack-10-A Westcoast Classic.......2004-02-15

this album is mack 10 at his best.thys album is a banger from start 2 finish and tha outro song based on a true story seals tha greatness of thys album and takes it 2 classic westcoast status.PERFECTION AT ITS PEAK

4 out of 5 stars Like it.......2003-12-17

I like this CD by Mack 10. I cant say its his best, thats why I gave it a 4, but I still find myself bumbing this cd in my truck quite often. Backyard boogie has a tight beat, and the chicken hawk 2 is also a great hit. If you like Mack then grab this cd. Mack still keepin it GaNgStA!

4 out of 5 stars WESTSIDE ONLY IN KALI !.......2000-11-06

MACK 10 DID GOOD IN THIS ALBUM.ONLY IN KALI.

4 out of 5 stars A little more laid back on this album........2000-06-01

With this album, Mack 10 starts to mature as a rapper. His lyrics are less "in your face" most of the time and a little more introspective. The last track on the album, BASED ON A TRUE STORY, is most reflective of this. BACKYARD BOOGIE is a bumpin' party track, INGLEWOOD SWANGIN' is a salute to his hometown, and THE GUPPIES is a mafia type gangsta tale.

The production on this album is very good...tight beats and slick interpolation. Mack's lyrics have matured and have acquired a unique flow. Overall, this is a very well rounded album. A definite gem in the rap game.

1 out of 5 stars give it up silkk.......2006-03-17

silkk and master p needs to give it up, nobody feels them no more but for some reason p still wants to make trashy cd's went from copying 2pac to biting lil jon I wonder how much money is p making these days.

    4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2005-05-09

it's a pretty good cd.the thing that made me give it 4 stars was some of the music on the songs sound the same.but i still like the cd . it's one of my favorite cd's. no limit rules!!!free c-murder!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars REAL MUSIC.......2005-02-26

If you don't like this CD you are just a hater. It is an original piece from Silkk the Shocker. One of the Best CD I have heard from No Lomit in a long time. You need to Stop Hating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2 out of 5 stars I'll answer.......2005-02-23

Master P's Ghetto D debuted at no.1 on the US pop charts and went on to sell 3 million records. Juvenile's 400 degreez was a slow seller initially, but some singles helpes the album climb into the top 10 eventually. 400 degreez has sold 4.5 million so far.
By the way, this album by Silkk is unoriginal, uninspired, and clumsy. Buy that B.G. OR Lil Wayne album instead.

4 out of 5 stars to the guy below me.......2005-02-23

About the 400 degreez being/not being the standard of southern hip hop. You said that the master P album came out in the late 90's, well so did 400 degreez so obviously i know what i'm talking about. And that is your opinion that the master p album set the bar. I want to know how many units he sold in comparison to 400 degreez, which sold 4 mill. Also look at the status of no limit and cashmoney now, so obviously people like cashmoney more, now cashmoney is not the head of the game but they have a name for themeselves, unlike no limit who has fell off.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a Video Game Soundtrack.......2006-02-21

Being a Playstation 2 owner, its a pleasure to be able to have a game "and" have a killer soundtrack to go with it. True Crime has an all around cast of rappers making with some very good rhymes and the beats are excellent! Snoop Dogg gets things started and Warren-G has by far, one of the hottest cuts on this CD! There are about 20 tracks on this CD and at least 15 of them were hard hitting tracks. Now thats quality!!!!! The CD lives up to the hype of the actual game itself.

    1 out of 5 stars Crap.......2005-01-16

I think True Crime is an excellent action game. However, I feel the soundtrack is extremely lackluster. Most of the songs sound the same, and aren't really that interesting. Even worse, my favorite songs from the game(such as the one that plays during the spa shootout or the music from the battle with Kim) aren't even on the CD. Personally, I think only extremely hardcore fans of the game should check it out, the rest should stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have been better.......2004-11-15

With all of the rap songs that are onthe video game they could have put together something much better. It has it's highpoints but after about the 10th track, there is nothing really worth listening to and I usually turn it off. All of the big named rappers and good songs are in the beginning of the CD (except 1)then they get some no names that make junk. Not recommended - download the 7 or 8 that are worth it and skip the rest.

    #1 - 8 (snoop)
    #2 - 9 (WC, Ice Cube, Mack 10 {Westside Connection} - also on thier "Terrorist Threats" cd)
    #3 - 7 (suga Free)
    #4 - 7.5 (Warren G f/ RBX)
#5 - 7.5 (Bishop Lamont, Young Dre, Black, Gangsta ...)
    #6 - 9 (Damizza & NUNE - upbeat track)
    #7 - 8 (Jayo Felony)
#8 - 9 (Bizzy Bone - maybe the best song on the album)
    #9 - 2 (hlooywood)
    #10 - 8 (Caviar, Above the Law {KMG & Cold 187 um} & Kam)
    #11 - 6 (Boo Yaa tribe)
    #12 - 6 (dee dimes)
    #13 - 6.5 (sly boogy)
#14 - 5 (lil half dead, quicktomac, kontroversy, showtime)
    #15 - 4 (soulstar)
#16 - 7 (tray deee, threat, mr. short khop)
    #17 - 6.5 (pomona city ridaz)
#18 - 3 (horrible song by Young billionaires)
    #19 - 6 (Styliztik)
    #20 - 6 (lil Eazy E)

    1 out of 5 stars I suggest you don't buy this........2004-03-04

It does feature a few BLAZIN tracks like "Hollywood" by Bizzy Bone, "Legends" by Boo Ya Tribe, "True Crime Rmx"(The New West Edition) by Young Dre, "Don't Do The Crime" by Above The Law & Kam & "Thug Night" by Jay-o-Felony...
