5 out of 5 stars Solid Cannonball.......2005-02-20

Just a tad below his very finest work on record, but still a very impressive achievement. "Serves Me Right" disappoints somewhat, but "Just One of Those Things" cooks from the get-go. The other tunes are all very solid. Top-drawer Adderley.

5 out of 5 stars One of Cannonball's best - with great sidemen.......2003-09-01

I really hope that this CD has reissued the VERY beginning of "Things Are Getting Better", where Cannonball tells the engineer (Jack Higgins) what the tune will consist of, who plays when, and then tells the lineup to "speak your little sermon, then get the **** out". "Blues Oriental" is great, as is this whole CD, "Groovin' High" being my personal favorite, but what makes it one of the best are the collaberators - Wynton Kelly, Percy Heath, Milt Jackson, and Art Blakey, who, by the way, plays perfectly behind this band. Cannonball is at ease and blowing so well here because of these players. I really believe that Riverside (the label that originally recorded this and a host of other great classic '50s and early '60s jazz LPs) got the best out of many of these artists, for whatever reason. Another great Riverside Cannonball recording was "Portrait of Cannonball" with Blue Mitchell and Bill Evans, with Philly Joe Jones, and Sam Jones.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2000-12-03

Adderley's and Jackson's playing on this record speaks for itself. If you know someone that has never heard Cannonball, this is one of the records to have them listen to. His playing is truly among the most lyrical in jazz-he can bend and twist notes like no one else. The title tack swongs so hard its difficult not to move when you're listening to it. Also for any lovers of Art Blakey's drumming, this one shows how steady he has doing the most simple playing yet totally driving the rhythym section. A great one to have.

5 out of 5 stars Solid all the way around.......2000-08-24

Here is a solid Jazz disk. Bag's vibes sound so clear and crisp you think he is in the same room. The opening notes of Blues Oriental are unique and captivating. The interplay between the musicians is first rate. The solo transitions are flawless. Art Blakey throws in a few snare roll surprizes that keeps your attention. Jazz should be smooth, exploratory, intelligent, and most of all captivating. This disk is all of those things and more. The recording is top notch and so clear it sounds as though they are in your living room. Cannonball and Kelley deserve all the praise as well. Get this disk and you will soon realize great music like this is very refreshing

5 out of 5 stars it's just one of those albums you must get........1999-11-09

Explaining why this is a good album is similar to explaining why "Kind of Blue" is an essential album to anyone's jazz collection. If you want to hear the incredibly tight combination of Bags and Cannonball's sweet, bluesy improvisations--with Art Blakey, Percy Heath, and Wynton Kelly (an amazing rhythm section)--get this album. It's fantastic.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A masterful album from two veterans.......2001-03-26

This album is a meeting of two of the great trombone players from the bop era. Both J.J. and Grey are Count Basie alumnus, and it is no surprise that the Count would have had these guys in his band. It is demonstrated on this album time and time again just how good J.J. and Grey are.

The CD opens with a classic Benny Goodman tune, Soft Winds. It is played at a frenetic break-neck speed and both the trombonists pull out great solos. There are a good mix of tracks on the CD; fast swinging numbers; slow ballads, such as track 3 and 4; and funky numbers, such as tracks 7 and 8. The diversity of the music played on this album demonstrates how versatile both the leaders are. The all-star rythm section are not over shadowed by the two horn men. Barron plays an especially brilliant solo on "Let Me See" and Ray Brown shows why he is considered a master of the upright bass on track 7.

Throughout the album Grey muted (his trademak) and J.J plays open, allowing his brilliant tone to be revealed. This variation in timbre provides a fantastic textured feeling on all tracks. It is easy to hear the two distinct personalities of the trombonists in their solos.

A must for any jazz fan.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars One of Eddie's Best CDs ! ! !.......2001-01-10

This one was probably of Eddie's best and most venturous from his brilliant career... He tackles some great material (lyrics to Miles Davis's Bitch's Brew with the wierd sound effects (Saw and bubbles overdubbed) - - and a Jazz version of Thank You Falletinme Be Myself... WILD! !! ), and even though he recorded many of the tunes in the past, his level of performance, and the nice groovin' hard bop / soul Jazz / funky feel of the make this 1974 release produced by Don Schlitten a "listen straight through" album (Some of the tracks also appear on the 32.Jazz Vocalese compilation inidentally however, the tunes really flow together from tack to track on this CD, so don't pass it up.) The personell are also as good as you're going to get... Joe Newman, trumpet; Billy Mitchell, Tenor Sax; Mickey Tucker, piano, electric piano, organ; Sam Jones, bass an Eddie Gladden, drums - - Joe fields producer. Other high points of the album is the soulful Cannonball Adderly tune, Things are Getting Better... a very funky Freedom Jazz Dance ( <-- one of the few EJ tracks that tend to wind up on Acid Jazz compilations) - - Eddie's Classic "Night in Tunisia" (Giacomo Gates does a great version of it too on one of his CD), the ultra heavy swiging Trane's Blues (although Eddie didn't write the lyric, check out his wild phrasing !), I Just Got Back In Town, Eddie's rendition of "I Cover The Water Front" based on a James Moody solo that would have most vocalists let alone horn players gasping for air - - and finally, a great rendition of Charlie Parker's Billie's Bounce.

Another great thing about the CD... intact and very informative liner notes from the original CD ! ! !

I know this will sound like a cliche... but its true : No Jazz collection can ever be complete without this incredible Eddie Jefferson reissue !
