Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

So good only Van could have picked the songs.......2007-07-31
You either love or hate Van the Man. Over 40 years he has given the world some of the most heartfelt beautiful music ever recorded. This best of provides a stunning glimpse into the breath and depth of what he is capable of delivering. Showing respect to those who came before him, this collection is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. In the hands of the recording company this offering could have been a diaster. Thanks Van for giving us your gems for this collection.
great new album.......2007-07-24
I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.
Great Value.......2007-07-23
This is a 2 disc CD with lots of great songs. I really like the mix of songs and definitely recommend this to Van Morrison fans.
Great selection.......2007-07-12
I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.
Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10
Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

Amazon.com essential recording
Van Morrison went a long way towards defining his wild Irish heart with his first two classic albums: the brooding, introspective Astral Weeks (1968), and the expansive, swinging Moondance. If the first was the work of a poet, its sequel was the statement of a musician and bandleader. Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You." The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favorite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grownup in a kiddie matinee. --John Milward

eternal listening pleasure.......2007-08-04
Van Morrison...Moondance...TERRIFIC...large jazz ensemble based music...simple, fun, and descriptive lyrics...what a joy to have this album once again...future generations will enjoy this one!
The Best.......2007-08-04
I am excited just thinking about this album. This is one of the top 100 albums of all time, period! Okay some people might disagree with me on that, but what most agree with is that Moondance itself is a work of art. Blends of Jazz, Folk and Easy listening with enough tinges of Americana to rival anything by Springsteen or Mellencamp. Oh, did I forget to mention there are some blues to this as well? Again, a work of art and I think Moondance and Into the mystic are a couple of my favorites, but it is hard to choose when again, the entire album is simply amazing. Despite being released over three decades ago, it still chimes with a radiance that words cannot describe.
The Moondance album is somewhat prolific to me when looking at all of Van Morrison's studio releases, perhaps because I do not think he put out an album after this one that could even come close to matching it. A one of a kind find that I will always treasure.
slice of heaven..........2007-06-22
She looked at me with those dark, mysterious eyes of hers and asked me to put on my favorite music. It didn't take but a moment for me to slip in MOONDANCE and so the night only got better from there. Smooth, mellow, rocking, with more soul then a Southern Baptist Church on a Sunday afternoon. No fillers here. Every song with a legacy of it's own. If music is the food of the gods then this one is a gift from the gods. Give it a listen and feel the rapture.
Moondance.......2007-05-03
This album came after "Astral week" I find "Moondance" every bit as good, in fact more enjoyable to listen to. It has a timeless quality about it, and it really dos not sound like it's 37 years old. Overall it has a good fel to it. The first song,"And it Stoned Me",reminds me a lot of the band, and the brass, which is used throughout. The album has a very soulful vibe. On a couple of the songs there's even a gospel flaver ("come running" and 'crazy love"). When he sings"iI want to rock your gypsy soul" in "into the mystic", he makes it sound like tere is nothing mor important in the world. The best moment on the whole album is"Turn it up? Turn it up? Turn it up? a little bit higher" in caravan.
If people listen to the album a few times, the songs will stay with them forever.
polished gems............2007-02-25
Every cut on this album is a polished gem; there are no fillers. "Stoned Me" starts the journey; "Moondance" still retains its sparkle (especially for Libras in October); "Into the Mystic" still haunts.
My personal favourite, "Brand New Day" still inspires me like a reverant hymn. Join Mr. Morrison for a quiet journey that soothes the senses.

Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming--which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-'60s band Them--speaks to his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Moondance as Morrison's most popular album, and for a reason: like that classic, it offers one deeply soulful, spiritually and musically thoughtful track after another. Much of his more "difficult" work is ignored here; in fact, Best of... gives us an intriguing picture of a Van who's almost eager to please. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Import pressing of this ace collection now deleted in the US! Van Morrison has boldly followed his own musical path since the '60s and this compilation proves that he has the talent to match his own vision. From the early days with Them ('Gloria') through his critically successful solo career ('Moondance', 'Brown Eyed Girl', 'Have I Told You Lately'), he remains one of the most beloved and influential artists in modern music, 20 tracks total, also including 'Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)', 'Domino', 'Here Comes The Night' and more. Universal. * Please note this version is not remastered.

Van the man..........2007-06-22
There's no organization to the music on this cd which has always been one of the great joys of a Van Morrison release where one song seems to lead to another and the sound as a whole is like listening to one inspiring arrangement but even with that in mind this collection is wonderful. Rather then having one large spiritual experience, you get 20 small spiritual miracles. Because to me, Van's music has always been so full of soul it is like a spiritual ride.
Always a writer of songs ...it's raining and i have this on..........2007-01-27
These are awesome..good album.
I like them as much as Philosopher's Stone, In the Midnight, Precious Time, Back on Top, When the Leaves Come Falling Down.....Rain check, These Dreams of You, Golden Autumn Day, Reminds Me of You, High Summer....opps there is my favorites list.
I'd recommend listening to Van. He's a poet. He's able to say what I'm thinking. And I'm going to see him one day because I have a ticket to go to an upcoming concert....like his concerts.Glad he comes to LA. So this is just a CD to get me in the mind frame. But even without that I'd listen to these. I guess I can IPOD my favorites now....
WONDERFUL.......2006-11-10
This is my favorite CD ever. I have bought it for many friends as gifts, and they all love it! He is the best!
Almost perfect.......2006-08-14
I had this disc once before and it was stolen. Loved it so much I had to buy it again. I wish it cotained Tupelo Honey and Into the Mystic. Other than that I love this disc . I recommend this to anyone. Whether you are a big fan or just only know a couple of his songs. Lively and uplifting. Great for traffic jams.
Wondering why they call this guy Van the Man?.......2006-07-15
Then you obviously don't own this CD. Fix that sometime soon. Any album with Brown Eyed Girl and a bunch of crappy songs is still worth a purchase, but you get lots more: Three good songs by Them (garage-band anthem Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Here Comes the Night) and several great songs by Van himself: the aforementioned Brown Eyed Girl, Sweet Thing, Moondance, And It Stoned Me, Domino, Jackie Wilson Said, Cleaning Windows and the previously-unreleased Wonderful Remark especially stand out, though there's more.
Still, it's not perfect. I don't care how popular Have I Told You Lately is, I don't like it. In my mind it's a sap-fest from someone who isn't really sappy. Same with Queen of the Slipstream. Get rid of these two, as well as Dweller on the Threshold and Warm Love. Swap in Madame George and Caravan. Then you'll have the true Best of Van Morrison.

Radio Edits? You've got to be kidding!.......2007-07-26
With a two CD set, there should be no radio edits. In fact, the CD doesn't say so on the back cover. It's only after you start playing the CDs, or load them into I-tunes, that you find out. What a rip off!
There is simply no excuse for not including the full version of the songs listed. None!
This mars what could have been a fantastic collection over two CDs.
Superb!.......2007-05-13
This double CD set is one of the best greatest hits compilations I've heard in a long time. If you want Doobies to listen to and don't know what CD to throw on, get this one. You have all the hits and more right here. A must for any Doobies fan!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Collection!.......2007-04-25
Since I moved abroad and needed to rebuild my cd collection, the Doobies were a big gap. This collection goes a long way to filling that gap. My iPod has been set to play this almost continually the last week. It captures the variety of styles that the Doobies encompassed, from the California folk rock beginnings to the jazzier, rockier Michael MacDonald era.
All the hits, not enough of the misses.......2007-03-19
Without saying so, what this 2-CD set includes is every Billboard chart single the Doobie Brothers ever notched - something no other album (except their boxed set) can boast. That means that 'Very Best Of' collects songs like 'Eyes Of Silver' (#52, 1974), 'I Cheat The Hangman' (#60, 1975), and 'Wheels Of Fortune' (#87, 1976) that were never included on similar previous collections. It even picks up 'Wynken Blynken and Nod' (#76, 1981) from the Sesame Street LP 'In Harmony.' And, two key non-hits ('Rockin' Down The Highway' and 'South City Midnight Lady') get tossed in, plus some stuff from the group's latter day albums.
What you don't get are enough of the Doobies' great album tracks like 'Spirit' (1974) or 'Nothin' But A Heartache' (1977). For those, you'll need to upgrade to the boxed set - which nevertheless omits 'Without You,' a perennial favorite previously included on 'Best Of The Doobies' and 'Greatest Hits.' Go figure....
Listen to all of the music.......2007-03-18
The Doobie Brothers started out life as a greasy California biker band and took their name after a fondness for getting high. That ethic led to big riff rockers like "China Grove" and "Long Train Runnin'," but was lacking in the eventual slick sophistication of Michael McDonald's urbane soul. The original 1976 "Best Of The Doobies" included songs up to "Taking It To The Street," which meant that the number one "What A Fool Believes" was after the cut off date. This time The Doobie Brothers recognize the debut album a year before "Toulouse Street" by including one song, the acoustically flavored "Nobody."
Once McDonald joined, the band entered a second era and began to move more towards urban soul and Steely Dan jazz. Tom Johnston split after "Living On The Faultline" over the Doobies' new direction with Jeff Baxter and McDonald, and the resulting "Minute By Minute" bore little resemblance to the mellow hippy-vibes of "Rocking Down The Highway."
What this CD does is successfully chronicle both Johnston's biker bar band and McDonald's more soul dominated period. When the Doobies broke up after "One Step Closer," it put the band on ice until a 1989 Doobie Brothers reunion that yielded "Cycles" and a hit in "The Doctor." The band soldiered on minus McDonald, which meant that Johnston and Patrick Simmons were able to regain the steering wheel and make bar-band riff-rock once more. (Even if - IMHO - "Cycles" was pedestrian and "Brotherhood" worse, but "Sibling Rivalry" is OK.)
For my money, this double CD rates a full star over the 1976 set by virtue of the extra songs post "Taking It To The Streets" and remastered sound. But then again, I totally lost interest in the band when they started churning out factory made classic rock like "The Doctor." You will also get a few essential songs dropped from both single disc sets, like "Eyes Of Silver" and "Another Park Another Sunday" (the original A-Side of "Black Water"), and the two-disc set recognizes once again that "South City Midnight Lady" is one of the band's best. Short of the Rhino box-set, this is a solid representation of the Doobies.

Never mind that Van Morrison is one of the most indelible songwriters of the 20th century--take each album on its own terms. On 1968's seminal Astral Weeks, a twentysomething Van Morrison can be found belting his gospelly, bluesy vocals in just as fine a form as he would be 20 years hence. In the sociopolitical context of the times, the album cried out about such ubiquitous '60s themes as cultural oppression and social upheaval. But it is Morrison's vocal dexterity and passion that maintains such timeless appeal. Take tracks like "Madame George" or "Cyprus Avenue" and you'll find such beautiful mourning, it'll be clear why modern songwriter Sinéad O'Connor once publicly exclaimed: "Van Morrison should be friggin' canonized." --Nick Heil
Customer Reviews:
Van's Best Album.......2007-08-01
This album is so beautiful i literally wept the first time i ever heard it and it never fails to touch me every single time i listen to it. It is in my opinion, the greatest album made by anyone at any time, ever. It makes you long to be newly in love, to feel those first butterflies in your stomach.
Album favorites are Astral Weeks, Sweet Thing and Madam George but every song is beautiful and the album flows effortlessly. I can't say enough about this one. Seriously, if you are a fan of Van or of music in general, you won't be disappointed.
I wish more stars were available..........2007-07-21
Moondance has always been one of my favorite CDs. Why it took me so long to buy Astral Weeks I'll never know. I can't stop listening to this album (and I've had it for almost a year now). I think it's one of the most honest albums I've ever heard. Van puts his all into every single line. Later on in his career it's almost like he stopped caring and just "talks" through the lines live. Here there is actual emotion and it's so precisely captured that every song takes you to a place that you feel like you've been before. The liner notes mention that there are no noticeable "singles" here, but I think every song works great in the context of the work as a whole and also stands on it's own admirably. This is in my top ten.
Ridiculous Good.......2007-07-03
Half the songs on here give me goosebumps. Astral Weeks is probably my favorite Van Morrison album, granted Tupelo Honey and Moondance are a lot more fun, Astral weeks is transcendental. In this album Van seems very in love, nostalgic, or sentimental. Key tracks (really all of them) include:
Astral Weeks- Strong and solid,
Sweet Thing- The strings in this are awesome
Cyprus Avenue- More like familiar Van Morrison
Madame George- It's long, and good. Again and as usual, an awesome arrangement. (for David Gray fans, this is where part of "Say Hello, Wave goodbye comes from)
The other tracks on here are all good, no real dancing numbers, but all the songs are beautiful, the kind you put on a mix CD for a new (or not so new) love. Anyone who considers themselves a Van fan had better own this.
IT STILL MAKES ME CRY.......2007-06-21
I think it came out in '68 when I was a sophomore in high school...shy, insecure, just moved to a new school. These songs became part of my very being, and they will always be a part of who I am. There was just something about Van: the words, the stylings, the chord progressions. His music made my soul scream, and it felt so good.
The Second Best Album of All Time.......2007-06-13
FREE FORM VOCAL STYLINGS
This album rates very highly on many critics list of the all time best. It routinely comes up in the top ten. About 10 years ago, Rolling Stone magazine voted it the second best album of all time, behind the Beatle's Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Released in 1968, this is Van Morrison's second solo album. It is 46 minutes long and the sound quality is good, although the music is mixed a little thin.
The Way The Young Lovers Do is the only thing on this album that is anything close to pop song along the lines of Brown Eyed Girl. I am not a big pop music fan, but I like this song. The rest of the album is something completely different.
The rest of the album is some nice music with some interesting playing, mixed really low. It is a mixture of jazz and folk with a little blues thrwon in. There are some interesting bits on flute, vibes and keyboards. But, the music remains just a back drop and is mixed in at a very low volume. The CD comes with a fold out cover that tries to give a historical perspective of the album. Intrestingly, it is pretty subdued and does not rave about the album like the critics do.
Morrison's wild and unstructured vocals are mixed loudly on top of the music. He seems to be always riffing and jamming. He'll be singing along and then he'll jump into a repeated riff, such as "you breath in, you breath out, you breath in, you breath out, you breath in, you breath out, you breath in, you breath out".
I know people are going to get mad at me, insult me and call me names, but I have to admit that I just don't get it. I don't think this is a personal, emotional album, and I don't think it has interesting stories. It comes off to me as an experimental album that didn't quite work.
Music is a very personal thing. People can get really mad when you don't agree with them on music that they really love. They take a low review on thier favorite album as a personal attack. They say nasty things about the reviewer.
To get even, people will mark a review as "hot helpful", like that evens things up. But, a review like this is helpful to buying public that might not know much about this ablum and are thinkging about buying it because of all the rave reviews (that is why I bought it).
Just because certain people love it doesn't mean everyone will. In fact, many people did not like this album. It is the only Van Morrison album not to chart. And you might wonder why Morrison did not do anything like this again. He certainly still had the artistic freedom to do what he wanted, because he had a pretty lose contract from Warner Brothers. What he came up with next, is Moondance, which was completely different. In later albums, Morrison did incorporate some of the Astral Weeks vocal stylings on some songs, but it was much more controlled.
Van Morrison started out in a group called Them. Them had a minor hit with Baby Please Don't Go, and bigger hit with Gloria, written by Morrison. Them was going through changes, so Morrison retired from music for a few years, before coming up with Brown Eyed Girl, and his first ablum, Blowin' Your Mind. He did not approve of the album and withdrew. His manager died, freeing him from his contract, so he was able to sign with Warner Brothers, have much more artistic freedom and came up with this.

"Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31
Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!
Time Warp.......2007-05-23
I guess only someone who was a teen or 20something could really appreciate
this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc
Shut up!.......2007-03-04
Like, for sure, half of it is like totally major gross-out, but the other half is like bitchin! Just shut up already and buy it!
missing tracks.......2007-02-26
lots of great 80's music available in these cds, but missing one of the greatest groups of the decade...Wham!
Excellent CD Set!.......2007-01-18
I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

There's a classic episode of The Little Rascals where one of the gang can't join everybody else on the ballfield because he has to stay home with his younger brother, who has the croup. "I can't come out and play," he whines. "I've got to stay home and grease Wheezer!" Nobody at Geffen Records knows whether this was the inspiration in naming Weezer, but it makes sense. Like many of their peers, the members of the Los Angeles quartet seem to have spent their formative years in front of the TV; when they were a little older, they were just as entranced by college rock. Finally, ala the Rascals, one of the gang said, "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!," and the result is Weezer's uplifting, unpretentious, and extremely endearing debut.
The self-titled Weezer is lean and mean at 10 short, punchy tunes, but nearly every one is powered by a larger-than-life chorus or a simple but effective lyric. "Undone-The Sweater Song" uses an unraveling sweater as a metaphor for a relationship on the rocks; "Buddy Holly" pays heartfelt tribute to the '50s rocker, and "In the Garage" paints a scene of suburban teens jamming while surrounded by posters of Kiss. Producer Ric Ocasek of Cars fame pushes the vocals and rhythm guitars, and this bare-bones approach may earn comparisons to fellow garage-pop band Green Day. But Weezer has more in common with the late, lamented Big Dipper, another group of slacker wiseguys that you just had to love. --Jim DeRogatis
Customer Reviews:
easy listening album.......2007-07-18
this album is great! standouts are buddy holly, say it aint so and of course the sweater song but each and every song has something to offer. i think this band was was overlooked due to the huge popularity of nirvana, pearl jam and stone temple pilots. i got into this album years after its release and am glad i finally picked up a copy. the album is short, little over 40 minutes with 10 songs (why i gave it 4 stars). also check out their green album.
90's was a great year for alternative rock.......2007-07-16
Weezer was a great rock band because they really stayed away from the rock and roll image (anti-rock star) and gave the alternative scene a great taste of geek rock than wasn't seen since The Descendants (Milo no doubt had influence on River's image). I don't approve of River's hating his fans for no reason (at least some of the good ones who don't ask for anything), although I sometimes did (the stalker type of fans who always want something).
The music, it's great music, it's not very technical, but they do great musically, so what do I care? The lyrics are decent, they don't take much time to figure out but their points are real and there isn't a single hint of fake (unless of course they are making an imaginary scene) emotion. Weezer is not an emo band either, there's a difference between emotion in rock and roll and just __________ emo. Weezer is the first. Weezer have plenty of emotion, yet these guys do like to have fun too. You can trust Weezer than they aren't pulling your leg with fake emotion.
Besides the lyrics, the music makes Weezer, _______ Weezer! IT's not technical, but the guitars are melodic and catchy. IT's also easy to sing along with Rivers, who never whines, and just sings. They might be compared to Green Day, although they are slower, and put a lot of melody onto their music instead. Weezer sound like a band that can be easily imitated, but it's actually so hard to do.
It's not the best album ever, but I enjoyed it. I took some stars off because I don't think it's always easy to dive into, it takes a bit of a mood. I reccomend buying it, and especialy Pinkerton, which is a bit unusual, yet totally different, but still Weezer. That's one of the best things a band can do.
Don't forget to try Milo Goes To College by The Descendants when your done.
8.5/10
A must own for any fan.......2007-06-27
This is where it all began and it's one of the best indie albums out there.
One of the greats of all time..........2007-06-07
I was a freshman in high school when this album came out, and, actually, I had to let it grow on me after I bought it. Now, 13 years later (damn, has it been that long?), it is, in my opinion, one of the greatest rock albums ever made. I listen to it only once in a while now, but every time I am blown away by the sheer quality of every track. The nuances of the guitars crunching through some old-school amps, the un-engineered sound of the drums, the genuine-ness of the vocals (does anyone else think Rivers is trying too hard on all their other albums?), all combine to make a perfect rock sound.
No band or album has ever had a bigger influence on my musical preferences. The only album that even comes close is Jimmy Eat World's 'Futures,' mostly because I deeply relate to most of the lyrics (it's a great album - listen to it).
'Only in Dreams' is epic, with one of the most spectacular slow-build crescendos ever and some sweet guitar and drum-work. Truly every song on the album is fantastic, and I have a really hard time picking out my favorite, because it changes every time I listen to the album.
Enough hyperbole. Listen to this album. Loud. Then listen to it again. And again.
Awesome!.......2007-05-31
I am relatively new to Weezer, and if you asked me a month ago who they were I couldnt tell you. My sister got an Ipod and didnt need her CD's any more so they were passed along to me. As I was listening to the CD's this one caught my ear. Within the first 2 songs I was in love!
Weezer is a great band! I love them, and if you dont own this album BUY IT! You will LOVE it!

The sound of the '70s.......2007-04-01
Few albums encapsulate America of the mid-70s as smoothly as Scaggs' 1976 commercial breakthrough. The bluesy-rock roots he sang with Steve Miller and the blue-eyed R&B he recorded since his 1969 solo debut provided a foundation for something more polished and sophisticated. The key was a production sound that took in the elements of disco - strings, horns, synthesizers and danceable beats - but didn't cast Scaggs' soul into slickness. The resulting record grabbed dancers by their velvet lapels and compelled radio listeners to the record store. Scaggs made the urbane turn Robert Palmer would visualize on video in the '80s.
"Silk Degrees" wasn't completely unprecedented, even among Scaggs catalog; he'd already been edging in this direction, bathing in the blues and soul of collaborations with Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. His preceding LP, 1974's "Slow Dancer," boasted horns, strings and some embryonic disco rhythms, but it didn't have Joe Wissert's sharp production or the L.A. studio rhythm section anchored by drummer Jeff Porcaro and bassist David Hungate. The blend of Porcaro's crisp playing and Hungate's lightly funky low strings creates a propulsive groove throughout the album. Their percussive opening on "Lowdown" is just one of the album's great instrumental moments -- and a popular sample to this day.
Scaggs' songs brimmed with optimism, fitting perfectly into an America that was still re-awakening from the debacles of Vietnam and Richard Nixon, and readying itself for a bicentennial celebration. The horn charts carried the warmth of an L.A. summer, and Scaggs is - for the first time at album length - completely at ease. The album sparkles with the band's intense studio craft, but still feels effortless and organic. Scaggs' tenor fits both the mid-tempo numbers and the soaring ballads with memorable perfection. If you were an American high school student in 1976, you no doubt have fond memories of slow-dancing to the six-minute "Harbor Lights."
Legacy's 30th anniversary reissue includes new notes from Scaggs and an essay by Bud Scoppa. Three bonus tracks provide contemporaneous versions of "What Can I Say" "Jump Street" and "It's Over" from a 1976 concert at the Los Angeles Greek Theater. They're a nice coda to the original album, showing how the songs translated to live performance (good, but not as good as the studio versions), but after ten perfect tracks, the reprise is nearly superfluous. Great 70's Album!.......2007-03-29
One of the great albums of the 70's! Still sounds great and as an added bonus, 3 live tracks from 1976, highly recommended!
Some of the best crafted pop music of the 1970s.......2007-03-18
Boz Scaggs, or this album in particular, is one of the enduring "guitly pleasures" of my misspent youth in the '70s... Now, I didn't own this album back then -- you didn't have to, since just about every track on here got tons of radio airplay, all through the disco era. It's whiteboy soul of the highest order -- slick, modern, immaculately produced but also soulful and sung with great passion. This 2007 reissue/remaster boasts wonderful sound quality as well as a trio of live tunes ("What Can I Say," "Jump Street" and "It's Over") recorded at a show in LA's the Greek Theater that demonstrate that Scaggs and "Silk Degrees" weren't just an in-the-studio phenomenon. One of the classic '70s albums that really stands up well over the decades.
Tight Album.......2007-03-05
gladto hear that silk degrees has finally gotten re-mastered&gotten a touch up. "Low down" Sounds as Great as it did back in the day. Blue-Eyed Soul is well served on this Album. Boz Scaggs hit his Artistic&Commerical Peak with this tight Mid 70's strong sounding album. Vocally He was on point as well.what can I say, lido shuffle&we're all alone are my main cuts off this album. Good strogn production&Instrumentation.
Blue-Eyed Soul Classic Remastered Finally..........2007-03-02
And the sound is wonderful-clean,full,dynamic,enachnes the vocals and music greatly without shrillness or compression."Silk Degrees" is,of course,Boz Scaggs commercial breakthrough, yeilding the smashes "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" plus the radio hits "What Can I Say?","It's Over" and "We're All Alone"(later a Top 10 smash for Rita Coolidge!).It is one of the definitve albums of the mid-70's-a record that seems very much of its time while still pulsing with the immediacy of fresh invention. The 3 bonus tracks are fine live takes of "It's Over",the rocking "Jump Street",and "What Can I Say?".A must-have!

Stands the test of time.......2007-07-16
The year I really started to take interest in music was 1986. It was the summer inbetween 6th and 7th grade and every song that I liked I would go out and buy the 45 single. Because I didn't have much money an album would really have to strike my interest to get me to buy it. "Back in the High Life" was one of those albums. The song "Higher Love" was a huge hit and I loved the song "Back in the High Life Again". Because there were at least two songs I liked I saved up the money and bought the tape. Every song sounded like a hit and I played the heck out of that tape until it wore out. When I got a CD player in the late 80s this was on my purchase list.
There were many albums and songs that I enjoyed in 1986 but very few albums that have held up well. Many albums had a lot of songs that sounded the same. You would have an artist that had a HUGE hit in one style and half of the next album would be trying to copy that style in order to get another big hit. Albums like this was an exception. Of course it helps that this is Steve Winwood's first big solo hit album. There is a lot of varity to keep this album interesting from the first to the last song and it is short enough that it doesn't over stay it's welcome. It is now 2007 and I have yet to get tired of this album and it has remained in my essential favorites for over 20 years.
If you are a fan of the 80s, even though you may have "Higher Love" on one of the many 80s compilations out there, the other songs are just as good and in some cases better (like "Finer Things" and "Freedom Overspill"). Give this one a chance.
My only complaint is this album is in much need of remastering. This is a minor complaint because all I have to do is turn up the volume a tad more than I have to do with other CDs.
Got it for "Back in the High Life".......2007-07-12
Discovered I liked "Higher Love" and "Finer Things" and that was it. The sound quality on my disk isn't great--I had to raise the volume and do some fiddling to get it to compare to the previous levels that had worked for months. Wasn't worth the price, IMHO.
Three good songs and the rest is forgettable to unbearable.......2007-05-28
I'm really surprised how high the ratings are for this. I'm a big Steve Winwood fan but really only three songs on here do it for me. The Celtic sounding Back In The High Life Again with nice mandolin and James Taylor harmony. Split Decision co written by Joe Walsh which gives the album an edge and My Love's Leavin' co written by former Bonzo Dog Vivian Stanshall(it's a shame the two of them didn't do this as a duet, as it's also perfect for Viv's voice). The hits Higher Love and The Finer things are okay but the rest isn't really any good in my humble opinion.
Great Variety In One Package.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful set of Steve Winwood's performances, and may be the best in all of his career. Althought there are "only" eight songs included on this disc, each one is unique and creative, with its own characteristicsand style. Also, each of these tracks is over five minutes long, for a total of about 45 minutes of play. Therefore, one does not feel shortchanged by listening to the eight songs, for each is great in its own right.
Steve primarily focuses on jazz, soul, dance, and island styles blended with good ol' rock 'n' roll. The lyrics of these songs explore fairly deep issues of life but the music tends to be light-hearted and suited for a party. Several of these tracks have become major hits on pop radio during the late 1980s, and the listener may be moved to sing along as the tune plays on the radio or on one's personal music player.
The album starts out with "Higher Love", a bouncy, lively hit with plenty of lighthearted percussion, and a memorable, sing-along chorus. This song is about finding a type of love in contrast to world problems and concerns, and was a popular hit on the radio. "The Finer Things" is generally an island sound, almost reggae-like, and was also a major hit. This track explores the enjoyment and appreciation of the good parts of a relationship with a loved one. "Back In The High Life" is perhaps the gentelest track, with a piano and synthetic fiddle in the background, and a folk/country sound; it was another major hit to reach the airwaves. It deals with returning to the good life after having to face responsibilities and problems.
The remaining five songs are of high quality as well, and noteworthy on their own. "Take It As It Comes" is the second track and is marked by a prominent brass section, giving it a jazzy flavor. This high-energy piece covers the necessity of dealing with and accepting difficulties in one's life. The next track, "Freedom Overspill" has a rhythm and blues style and brass horns, and could be misattributed to another very popular R&B singer. In this song, the subject encourages his friend to open up and talk about concerns and problems. "Wake Me Up On Judgement Day" makes a great dance song for a party, with a high-energy pop/synth background, even though the lyrics are about a guy who would rather sleep through the world's problems caused by human error. The second-to-last track "Split Decision" includes verses with a reggae sound and a chorus with a southern rock style similar to that of Joe Walsh. This mid-paced song tells a story about a guy in conflict with himself over making decisions and taking action. The last track "My Love's Leavin'" contains a synthetic string background along with extensive percusion and electronic keyboard. As the title suggests, this song is about experiencing the loss and heartache when one's lover leaves him.
Overall, this is probably the best of Steve Winwood's albums in his entire music career. If the listener obtains just one of his albums for their collection, this would be the best one to choose. It demonstrates his versatility in his musical styles and performances.
I'm not really under thirteen.......2007-04-10
I'm in my mid 20's and discovered this song a few years ago on the radio and just couldn't turn it off. It totally drew me in, musically, vocally, melodically and everything. Fortunately the radio deejay said the title and artist of the song as soon as it was over so I was able to go out and buy this album the next day and fell in love with it.
