4 out of 5 stars The second phase of Brown's career.......2006-03-28

The 70's heralded a harder, funkier Brown than had been heard in the 60's when Brown was more of a soul crooner who occasionally dabbled in raw R & B.

As has been stated earlier, most of the songs on this compilation can be found elsewhere; the purchase was worth it for this reviewer to have Brown's best dance anthem in its entirety: Super Bad.

And that is what Brown was and is!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Brown Collection, But...But!..........2003-09-30

The people who put this together placed a live version of "Give it Up, Turnit Loose" on here that I can't stand, and instead of running the full lenght "Payback" here, they have a version that fades out as if you've flipped the 45 to play part II. Irritating. And another madness is that they put canned applause on "Papa Don't Take No Mess". Insanity. To its credit, "Superbad" is presented in its entirety and "Make It Funky" (What You gonna do Now?) never sounded as good here. This makes the case for spending the extra bucks and purchasing a box set or 2 CD greatest hits package.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the New JB Fan.......2002-06-30

this cool for the New Fan of JB.if you have heard&seen the Songs used in various Clips&Older Footage then this will Hit the Spot.but once you are a Fan&Have Heard His Stuff then you will look at this like a Start Up Kit as to the Main Essence of James Brown.no matter what Compilation though the Material here is still Classic&Sounds as Fresh now as it did when it first was released.James Brown one of the Few true Original Musical Artists.

3 out of 5 stars More Classics For The Beginner.......2002-03-04

It's been a while since Polygram has issued previously unreleased JB and it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for a package similiar to many in the incredible Chronicles series.
Volume One of the Millenium series for James Brown at least had the prev. non-album "America Is My Home, Part One". Volume Two has nothing as interesting for historians (the poignant theme from the film "Black Caesar", "Down And Out In New York City", does made a rare appearance, however).
The hit single tracks are remastered and the instruments have more presence, but earlier pressings are also impressive. The spoken intro. to "Sex Machine" is more audible here.
The only non-45 rpm cut is the heavily reissued (apparently) live-in-the-studio rerecording of "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", the historic groove highlighting Bootsy Collins' bass, Clyde Stubblefield's drums, Bobby Byrd's organ, and JB's high energy hollerin'. The overdubbed audience is not removed as on earlier issues and that's fine with me.
What should have also been included are a few "lost" sides like "Love Me Tender", the super funky "Dooley's Junkyard Dogs", and George Harrison's (reported) favorite rendition of "Something". Space could have been made by using only "Part One" of the familiar tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Too many retreads for...The Millenium.......2000-11-19

You can't argue about the importance of the titles on this CD. What a loyal JB fan/collector *can* argue with is the apparent (presumed) haste with which it was assembled. Ofcourse the history-makers like "Papa's...Bag" and "Cold Sweat" are natural selections for the theme, but with the material so commonly available, you would think a peep inside the vaults for previously unreleased LIVE versions would have been appropriate for general listeners. One source suggests there are at least five basically untapped concerts on file. [Selling point for this reviewer/fan: 1st ever album issue of "America Is My Home" (Part One)"].

5 out of 5 stars Great For New James Brown Listeners.......2000-06-15

this isn't a Great Compilation when Compared Too other Fuller Sets.but for the new James Brwon Listner this is a Great Introduction too Some Of The Greatest Music Ever Recorded.James Brown is one of The Greatest Artists Ever. His Music is TImeless.

3 out of 5 stars I Want My Funk Uncut..........2000-06-11

This collection of James Brown's best "pop" moments is too limited in its scope, and too limiting in its depth. Yes, it has the essential (and played out) trio of pop classics, "I Got You," "It's A Man's World," and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." And a plus is the inclusion of the long version of "Cold Sweat," which many rate as THE most essential James Brown cut. But James Brown, the REAL James Brown, is not about being restricted to 3 minutes. Since less than 40 of the cd's 75 minutes are used, Universal could have done us all a favor by a) using the same songs in their long versions, or B) adding more of James' essential cuts, like "Please, Please, Please," "Out Of Sight," "I Got The Feelin'," or, yes, "Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud" (which was a top 10 pop hit, not that it's ever played on oldies OR old school stations). What's the sense of finally releasing "America Is My Home" on this set, and limiting it to part 1? This is one of the rarest of James Brown cuts ("World" is the other), and with all the extra room on the cd, it should have been issued in full length. Come to think of it, "World" was top 10 R&B. It could have been here, too. This set is not only a poor value, it is exceeded by every other James Brown collection out there. If you are a James Brown novice and think 20 Greatest Hits might be going a bit deep for you, pick up "In The Jungle Groove." In just 8 cuts (9 if you count the bonus beats), you'll have an introduction that should leave you salivating. All in all, even with the inclusion of "America Is My Home," this is a pretty lame excuse for a James Brown retrospective. I want my funk uncut!

I would have preferred another Lynn Collins song in lieu of the Marva Whitney song. They also could have added Maceo and the Macs (Soul Power) or A.A.B.B. (PIC UP THE PIECES ONE BY ONE) to this collection to give it a rounded sound. Nevertheless, you can't go wrong with James, Bobby, the JB's and Lynn...

4 out of 5 stars Balanced collection .......2005-06-27

While we're still dreaming of more adventurous offers from Polydor, something like the CD debut of "Live at the Garden", or the deluxe edition of "Revolution of the Mind", or any number of previously unreleased concerts believed to be gathering dust in the vaults, this set will do just fine: 12 tracks including a long version of Bobby Byrd's classic "I Know You Got Soul" (with a Brown countdown); "The Message From The Soul Sisters", a great recording with Vicki Anderson, who it appears returned to the musical family after about a three-year absence when Marva Whitney became lead diva; and the long, long overdue "What Do I Have To Do To Prove My Love To You", from the aforementioned Marva, another catchy cut from an artist who should have had many more charters, including this one. [Fans/historians look for JB's "You've Changed" from the recent "Motherlode" CD for an interesting similiarity]. Beyond these cuts, we have more familiar, heavily recycled things like "Funky President (People It's Bad)", "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved", the last of these presumed to have a live-at-the-Apollo companion sitting up on the shelf.
There are some classy photos adorning this package, some from television 1970-71. Maybe a future release will contain some performances from that period from the Mike Douglas Show, Playboy After Dark, Merv Griffin, etc.

      3 out of 5 stars 2 ringers-Plus his final hits.......2004-07-22

This sloppily compiled CD starts off with 2 original versions of JB's classics-"I Got You" and "Please Please Please". But why they're included on a collection of Brown's later hit years, is anybody's guess. Brown's final chart records were all in the 80's and early 90's (outside of "Living In America" he had no Pop crossovers) and here he only gets lucky 3 times , "Living In America" (this is the remixed LP version, which ran 6 minutes, not the 45 version which is a little over 4 minutes), 1988's "Static" and 1991's "Move On". The others fall flat, including a duet with Aretha Franklin. The rest of the songs are split between Producers Dan Hartman and the R&B group Full Force. Brown fares better with the latter, but neither one can light much of a spark. This is mainly for die-hards. All others should seek out JB's classic years.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Brother and the Father of Funk!.......2004-12-18

It's difficult to distil the very best of James Brown sine the man has been so prolific over five decades with countless albums and a plethora of classic songs. It opens with the passionate I Got You (I Feel Good), continues with the super funky Get Up and then it's into the gorgeous It's A Man's World with its wonderful lyrical twist. And there's Super Bad, the sax-driven Cold Sweat and the buoyant Get Up Offa That Thing, surely the blueprint for P-Funk years ahead of its time. Not to mention the brilliant Hot Pants with its propulsive rhythm and soulful eroticism. The album ends with the tender and moving Please Please Please. This is a great selection but would have been better with the inclusion of legendary songs like Night Train, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Soul Power and Say It Loud. Nevertheless, five stars for the quality material. James Brown sure is Soul Brother Number One and the Father of Funk!

        Album Description

The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."

To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at http://www.ilovethatsong.com/green.

UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam®, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Shorewood Packaging is the first North American packaging supplier to produce disc trays from PaperFoam®.
