One spin through the debut of Austin-based singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney and you may think you've entered a time warp: The Longview, Texas, native so hearkens to the honky-tonk era of the '60s and '70s that you half expect to find her on an old kinescope of one of those syndicated Nashville TV shows, the special guest ("Let's bring up a little gal now from Texas...") of the Wilburn Brothers or Porter and Dolly. Sweeney isn't a power vocalist--she'd be called a "girl singer" in the old days, stepping up demurely to do her song or two--but she's got a sense of humor, poking fun of herself on "Next Big Nothing" and insisting if you play one song in reverse, you get a broken heart. She can also cop an attitude when she wants, as on "Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame," an original tune where she evokes the good-ol'-gal assertiveness of Loretta Lynn. Sweeney has fine taste in covers, too, offering up Iris DeMent's 'Mama's Opry" and the Lacy J. Dalton hit "16th Avenue," as well as two songs by Jim Lauderdale, who lends his vocals to Keith Sykes's "Lavender Blue." Otherwise, Sweeney doesn't seem to care a flip about what's going on anyplace but right there in the Lone Star State, keeping things twangy, tangy, and tonkin', the teardrop pedal steel functioning almost as a duet vocalist, and her guitarists eschewing Music City formula riffs for stuttering electric solos and the occasional walking bass. It's been a long time since any young female--think Joy Lynn White, maybe--got this deep-dish country. Album Description

Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, recorded in Floresville, TX and co-produced by Sunny with producers Tommy Detamore (guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, Dobro) and Tom Lewis (drums), isn't one of those quiet, timid little baby-steps records that slowly grows on you with hints of future potential. It explodes into the room with an ultra-confident, Texas-sized "HOWDY!" and demands your full attention.

Listen to Sunny rip and swagger her way through the dozen songs on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, and you wonder: Where has this gal been hiding until now? The first thing that grabs you is her voice - a big, bold and brassy instrument that brings to mind both the classic female country singers of the `60s and `70s that she grew up on as part of a country-music-loving family (both her grandfather and stepfather played in bands) as well as two of Sunny's biggest modern influences, Natalie Maines and Kasey Chambers, at their most unapologetically untamed. It's a voice that all but screams Sunny's adopted slogan: "Get your honky-tonk on!"

And on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, Sunny does just that. From winning originals like "Ten Years Pass," "Slow Swinging Western Tunes" and the title track, to classy covers of tunes by some of her favorite writers (including Iris DeMent, Keith Sykes, Thom Schuyler and Jim Lauderdale), it's an album that has little in common with either pop country or "Texas country." It's country, pure and simple - as primed for a Lone Star honky-tonk as it is the Grand Ole Opry or any radio station that still makes room for George and Tammy and Merle and Loretta.

Fantastic! I heard Ms Sweeney on a satellite radio station and was immediately hooked. She has such a sweet honesty in her voice, and her songs tickle that ol' thinkin' bone stuck up in the brain. I was most pleased with this cd and look forward to much, MUCH more from Sunny Sweeney. My family members will be getting this cd in their Christmas stockings!

I absolutely love Sunny Sweeney and this CD! The video for "If I Could" came across my path on YahooMusic one nite and I loved it. The CD has some tracks that are worth the 'price of admission' each by themself, including "East Texas Pines", "If I Could", and "Next Big Nothing". Great vocals, great pedal steel, strong guitar work. This album has revitalized my interest in singing again.

Sunny does a perfect job of making honky tonk music with catchy tunes a twang in her voice and powerful rhythm. I find her similar to Jill King and Julie Reeves also great sounding country artists. I highly recommend this album to the serious country music lover.

Sunny Sweeney's debut album, Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame is compelling and catching. It feels more like a live honky-tonk performance in part because it has the pared down sound of a great bar band and not the over produced sound of too many studio albums. Sunny is a singer song-writer. The album offers a mix of her work and that of other song-writers.

What first caught my ear was the song, "If I Could." It's an infectious anthem for the average worker with an auctioneer's tempo for the catchy chorus. I found this song through Yahoo's Music Videos Country Music channel. Yahoo generates a play list, including new offerings based upon your past selections and ratings. It works. I loved this song and bought the album. A lot of catchy songs don't move me to buy. Sunny got my money.

Another special treat is a cover of, "16th Avenue," a song made famous by Lacey J. Dalton. The cover nicely matches the rest of the album in voice and tone and is not an exact copy of Dalton's version. Sunny Sweeney makes it hers.

The album is solid and engaging. It is real Country Music and Texas genuine. I'll be watching for more from Sunny Sweeney. She reputedly has a great following around her home base in Austin, Texas. I think her fan base is set to grow.

My wife purchased this double CD collection for Valentine's Day of this year and she couldn't have bought me a better gift. These songs bring back a flood of memories from my childhood of listening to this wonderful, vocal "fearsome, foursome" from the late 60's and early to mid 70's. From sitting in my living room every afternoon after school to going to see the Imperials with my dad, at times listening to these recordings, it makes me want to "rewind" the clock and go back to those days when I really had it made. The majority of the songs focus on the group made up of Jim Murray, Terry Blackwood, Sherman Andrus, Armond Morales, and Joe Moscheo on piano. During this era of the Imperials, they won their first of 4 Grammy awards for the album NO SHORTAGE. This was and still is my favorite era from the group (1971-1976) and if I could thank every member of the Gospel Music Association that had something to do with the idea and release of this project, I would do it!!!!! Thanks Jim, Terry, Sherman, Armond, and Joe for a lot of great memories. Someday soon, in heaven, maybe I can re-live them all with my dad. He's been there since 1988 and I can't wait to see Him! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While this has become one recording that I find myself gravitating toward and playing quite often, I was not prepared for the performance that I witnessed live. Smilefest 2006 was scene of the crime. Incredible, inspired, and jammy. The smile on my face stayed for days. As with most 'Jam' bands the emphasis is on live music. And if you support live music and like the 'Jam' genre, well then this is for you. This band will be the leader of the next Jam wave. Someone has to and the Jam kingdom has no king right now. I can't describe how good this band is, you must witness it. The percussion alone with a tabla player, conga player, and drummer is something to behold. You will hear lots of sound influences from around the world. The band did Pink Floyd's Echoes and it was beautiful. Anyway back to the album - heartfelt, intricately textured rock tunes (ala String Cheese Incident, even Grateful Dead maybe) but better from a studio perspective. I hate to ring out names of other bands, but you have start somewhere so the reader gets the general idea. The record is pretty much flawless from start to finish. No filler, no useless material, all possible classics. They are picking up speed and getting a name. Seeing is believing though. Check it out.

If you're looking at this release, then you're well aware that one criticism against the "jam band" community has been that the bands are great live, but struggle in the studio. Fortunately, that concept has been proven false with a number of excellent studio releases over the last several years and that trend solidly continues with this release by New Monsoon!

I'd been aware of these guys for awhile and have copies of a number of their concerts, but didn't have any of their studio work because, to me, their live shows sounded like a band that was still in search of their true sound. Granted, the members of New Monsoon are incredibly talented, at various points in any given song they can sound like everyone from Santana to the Allmans to Zappa, with a healthy dose of wide open exploration layered over all of it. While those ingredients can make for an exhilarating live show, it's tough to replicate it in the studio (just ask the Grateful Dead).

But, with this release, New Monsoon (and the co-production team of Paul Kimble and ace percussionist Michael Shrieve) have managed to capture the lightning in a bottle and have come out with a stellar release! Each song is well crafted and appropriately loose limbed enough to have you bouncing around your living room, while remaining tight enough to have the jams serve the song and leave plenty of room for further exploration in a live setting.

You'll still hear passages that are reminiscent of their influences but those nods bear the imprint of paying respectful (and playful) homage. To my ear, the pacing and delivery of the vocals in "Rock Springs Road" are even pleasantly reminiscient of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

Stylistically, some might be tempted to describe "The Sound" as similar to "Anchor Drops" by Umphrey's McGee but that might be as much of a stretch as comparing, say, the Allmans to Rush. Sure, the music of both cover a lot of musical ground, but where "Anchor" uses elements of prog rock for a lot of it's foundation, "The Sound" has a much more natural or earthy feel. Put it this way, "Anchor" frantically lurches between styles, but on "Sound" the transitions flow. For my tastes, "The Sound" is my clear listening preference.

On that note, I'll suggest that this release easily compares favorably with the excellent recent studio releases by LoS, moe., Phish, WSP, Railroad Earth, Jupiter Coyote, etc...and it certainly will be getting more time in my changer than the underwhelming "One Step Closer" by former label mates SCI.

If you've read this far, then you know you like this kind of music - "The Sound" will make you smile and want to dance! Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars WHEN IS THIS CONCERT GOING TO DVD???.......2004-11-20

Fantastic concert, especially John Mellencamp's version of ROCK IN THE USA is not to be missed, great energy. Jerry Lee Lewis, the Late great Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, the list goes on, the CD is worth a listen.

But when is this concert going to be on DVD?? It is long overdue! What's the story, put the concert on DVD already for everyone to see. I was overseas serving my country when the concert was broadcast, so I missed out, help us out who missed the concert!

I've never liked the idea of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; it seems to me that institutionalizing the music and setting up some kind of semi-official Rock Aristocracy defeats much of the spirit and thrill of the music. It also seems to be yet another excuse for a lot of Rolling Stone nerd-critics to try and attach their names to those of their musical heroes.

And, with few exceptions, this album proves how misguided this whole concept was. The inclusion of Melissa Ethridge is annoying but predictable; the fact that she gets more tunes on this 2-CD package than Springsteen, Dylan, Johnny Cash or any other artist is beyond belief. It would be understandable if she did something special but she is dull as dishwater, screaming "Hello Cleveland!" (that's a deep sentiment repeated ad nauseum by almost every singer on this CD) before screeching "Can you remember the fine days when Rock and Roll...wore a drrrrrrress?!?!?!" Kind of an odd sentiment coming from a woman who refuses to wear dresses, but that's neither here nor there, the important thing to keep in mind is that Etheridge can't sing and has an extremely hard time finding the melodies of the three classic tunes she tackles. The Ronettes and Supremes were due more homage than this.

Disc 1 is rescued, temporarily, by Al Green, the most underrated singer of his generation, who turns in gorgeous renditions of "Tired of Being Alone" and "A Change is Gonna Come," but Chrissie Hynde does her very best to break the mood by screaming the name of every Cleveland suburb at the top of her lungs before phoning in a lackluster mumbling of "My City Was Gone."

After that things pick up for quite a while. Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Fogarty all deserved more space on Disc 1, and Jerry Lee Lewis rocks on Disc 2. Springsteen's "Shake Rattle & Roll" is surpisingly slow and doesn't display the Boss's usual energy, but he understands what he's doing, something that can't be said for every act on this CD.

Once The Killer and The Boss leave the stage, the show collapses. Natalie Merchant, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby and especially the Allman Brothers all phone it in, stumbling through dull performances of songs it makes no sense for them to sing. Browne's version of Bob Marley's great "Redemption Song" is downright shameful, and it is embarassing to listen to Slash trying to remember the guitar parts to Hendrix' "Red House."

Most annoying of all are the constant reminders that the show is in Cleveland, Cleveland rocks, this is for Cleveland and, over and over and over, "Hello Cleveland!!!" Outside the city limits, WHO CARES?!? For whatever reason, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has decided that Cleveland is the center of the universe...which probably goes a long way towards explaining why this album, and the Hall itself, have been ignored everywhere outside of Ohio.

The Hall may have been a good idea, and the concept of this CD--a group of Rock giants covering classic Rock tunes in front of a live audience--is a good idea. Unfortunately, the reality of the Hall and the CD fall far short of the dream.

THIS RECORDING IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE EXPERIENCE OF THE OPENING OF THE HALL OF FAME. A LOT OF ARTIST THAT PERFORMED THERE WERE NOT INCLUDED ON THIS CD. MAYBE ANOTHER VOLUME WILL FOLLOW WITH ERIC BURDON, BON JOVI, CHUCK BERRY, HEART, LITTLE RICHARD.... THERE WERE SO MANY IN THE 7 HOUR CONCERT, THAT A SINGLE CD COULD NOT COVER THAT CONCERT. IT WILL BE A COLLECTORS ITEM FOR THE AVID ROCK N ROLL FAN. I WAS THERE, AND I'LL NEVER FORGET IT AND IF YOU MISSED IT, YOU'LL NEVER GET THE CHANCE AGAIN EXCEPT TO HEAR US 65,000 FANS SCREAMING ON THE CD.

I Highly reccomend this CD. I like to hear Jerry Lee sing ballads and on this Cd he sings his best.He is in a catagory all by himself. Buy this one if you are a fan, you won't be sorry.

A lot of country stars used to sing "covers" of songs originally performed by others, and the results were usually not as good. Here, Jerry Lee Lewis sings a lot of old "standards" which technically are "covers" but with his unique vocal style and piano playing, it winds up being a new creation well worthy of attention. I originally bought both LP records containing the music on this CD, and they are two of my most treasured records of Jerry Lee's country period, which I think is his best genre. It is nice to have the CD so I can retire them from active playing. If you like the old standards, you will like the way Jerry Lee does them, I'm sure. I think he has more musical talent than any other performer of his generation and could have been greater than Elvis had he not made a few PR mistakes or if Elvis had not been so sexy looking to the women. But then again, he wouldn't have been Jerry Lee Lewis, the Icon. If folks would have only judged him on his music!

After helping Slave to create a major part of funk history, Steve Arrington broke ranks to do his own thing, and in the process, he created two albums that still, when played toady, sound as fresh, as the decade they were released.
Firstly, what makes this CD great is the quality of the singing. Steve was originally a drummer, when he was recruited to Slave, but, in time, he discovered that he could really blow. Boy, what a strong voice he has.
Secondly, unlike a lot of CDs then (and now) there were no fillers on this CD. Every track could stand on its own, and could have been released as a single. To prove this point, the CD I have has about 5 extra tracks, but apart from the remix of `Way Out', I think that upon listening to these toons, you can see why they were left out.
Personal favourites are: Nobody can be you (but you), Way out (particularly the Frankie Crocker remix), you meet my approval, but I can let the CD play and enjoy them all. Trust me. Funk heads need this in their collections.
Also recommended is the Hall of Fame Vol 2 .

This album came out when vinyl was still in effect. As any old schooler would know, most albums at the time consisted of 1-3 solid cuts. In my opinion this was one of the first albums from a group that contained absolutely NO FILLER. The album is bangin' from start to finish. We all know about Nobody Can Be You and Weak At The Knees. But to me the sleeper cuts are You Meet My Aprroval, and Speak with Your Body. How about the rock flavored Strange. Also the bonus tracks that are on the cd but weren't available on vinyl, are hot as well. A true classic. I still keep up with what Steve is doing by going to his web site: stevearringtonministries.com. He has totally dedicated his life to God.

Whether it was with groundbreaking group Slave or as leader of his own funk clan, Steve Arrrington always profoundly expressed his music abilities with such style and brilliance. First starting as member and drummer for the Ohio based funk outfit, Arrington scored many top R&B hits including the mesmorizing "Just a Touch of Love," "Watching You," and "Snapshot." From there, Arrington went on to form his own band, Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame, and what has to be one of the funkiest albums ever made, many will agree on this phenomenal debut. Kicking off the set is the hard funk-driven top 20 R&B smash "Nobody Can Be You." Also included is the thunderous "Weak at the Knees," that was later sampled by rap moguls Jermaine Dupri and Jay Z, and the essential "Way Out," which is also offered as a remix by the legendary late great Frankie Crocker. The soothing "Beddie Bey," also sampled on Tribe's classic 'Midnight Marauders,' is an essential cut that listeners shouldn't dare ignore. Another masterpiece worth owning.

from the days of Slave to his solo albums he has had that soulful feel all thru his music.nobody can be you but you,weak at the knees are just some of the jams here.his voice has been weakly emulated by alot of weak singers.not to mention the coutless samples and loops of the music of Slave&Steve's solo output.he deserves some Love.the Brother is Bad.he could rope circles around alot of these Busters out here today.he is a real SoulFul Talent.

The titles mislead. The funk on this first solo release was less than the funk and smooth soulful sounds found on Steve's last album with the group called Slave. Steve's presence is felt strongly on most cuts, although selections found on this album are almost juvenille in comparison to his albums with Slave, notably the last album "SHOWTIME". The first song "Nobody Can Be You" and two others "Strange" and "Weak At The Knees" are the most memorable selection on this CD. However, the powers to control the releases of these "OLD SCHOOL JAMS" performed by Steve Arrington of his subsequent albums(releases) should not be deterred from release. I believe his latter albums supplied more of a truer sense of his talents fully explored than his first solo album. Although Christian in nature, many listeners do not realize the gospel aspects of his latter albums. Which were enjoyed by the funky and the sanctified listeners equally. SAMUEL S. WAY COOL. If you are a fan of these two nuts and then you will want to add this to your collection. It is truely them at their all time best. I have several cassettes with thier works they are funny. But this CD is my all time best collection of their crazy parody music. A most excellent find and would recommend it to all.

An entertaining album of Homer & Jetho's early work. If this is to be your first Home & Jethro album, though, I'd reccommend "America's Song Butchers, The Weird World of Homer and Jethro" instead. This "Hall of Fame" album obviously takes from old 78's and is pre hi-fi. Not a lot was done to clean the sound up; listening with headphones can be painful. But the lyrics are amusing and the talent is there. (Please also read Thomas Ferranti's review. I listened to the album and it does not contain the Wurlitzer overdub, thankfully)

Now if they'd just re-release "Barefoot Ballads", their excellent hillbilly album that introduced me to Homer and Jethro in the first place.

Well - lets say it's the 1930s or 40s and you own a record company named King Records, and you sign Homer & Jethro to their first recording contract, produced countless 78rpm 10" discs, and sold a fair amount of them when all of a sudden, modern technology develops the 33rpm 12" disc, and no one wants to buy 78s anymore, Homer and Jethro move on to RCA records, and manage to get quiet a lot of attention so you repackage their back catalog via several 12" album collections.

Now it's many many years later. H&J have all but been forgotten. Except now - someone releases a couple of CDs of their RCA sides - and you get an offer from someone to license some of the old 78s recordings - and, well, to call it as such, maybe you won't sell as many, as if you billed it, instead, as some kind of "best-of" - and that's exactly what has occurred here. Well, for shame for shame. (Tho for all I know, maybe these WERE the most played 78s - could be.)

The material on this disc IS a must-have peek into those early days, when they werent as much into the country hillbilly humor then, and played alot of generally straightforward folk type stuff, albeit the humor IS still there - in fact - some of these early tracks are what got me hooked in the first place.

A good dip into the well of 78s, otherwise collecting dust. "Groundhog" is still a classic - their 'ad-libbing' is great - you can tell they were young, but really enjoying themselves!

Just a warning, though - back in the 70s, some idiot decided to take a batch of these 78s and record a new layer of wurlitzer organ or some such thing over the top - (as if it needed anything!)- especially not the sound of one of those cheesy keyboards with the silly synthesized drums and bassline!

So - I can't tell you if this is the one with or without that overdub or not. I was so excited to see I could write this review I didnt stop to see if there were any sound samples to hear! :(

    This is a great CD set. So great that the first copy I purchased during it's originally released was recently stolen. So I was thrilled to find that I could repurchase it on Amazon, since it is hard to find in stores. I'll never let this one out of my sight and I advice current owners to do the same. If you buy it, you will love it. Just be sure you tell your friends that they have to get their own and preferably not by stealing yours.

    I have been watching Soul Train since I was a little girl. I have watched it change to fit today's generation, sadly. These CD's took me back to the days of my childhood in the 80's. I loved the music. It was all the same, nothing had changed. I long for the 80's, which really were the good old days. If you like Soul Train, then get this set. It is well worth the money.

    Miss Kitty Wells, dressed demurely in gingham and uttering ne'er a cussword, was the role model for women in country music until Patsy Cline came along. "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" is one of country music's defining moments. In it--as in most of her hits--Kitty was wronged and betrayed by a feckless man. Titles like "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God," "A Woman Half My Age," "Icicles Hanging From Your Heart," and "I'd Rather Stay Home," pretty much fill out the story. Kitty sings with patent honesty, only rarely venturing off the three-chord highway, and never to dance on the tabletops. --Colin Escott

    I give this 4 stars not because this is the definite Kitty Wells collection, because it isn't. I give it four stars because it is one of the few collections that offer a good sampling of her ORIGINAL recordings.

    Now, let me tell you about an ideal Kitty Wells set. Take all of her top 10's and some of her lesser known songs and there you go, it's not that hard to figure out.

    By listening to the songs here, you imagine that Kitty bacically played the housewife who was fighting for a say in what went on. True, but there was much more to her than that.

    She was a masterful honky tonk singer, an excellent gospel singer, and when the "Nashville Sound" hit in the 1960's she mastered that also. In fact, Kitty was probably one of the most versatile performers in country music history.

    To summerize, this is a great set, all the songs are original recordings, and the notes are awesome. But, you need to hear a lot more of her songs to understand what she was all about.

    And also, avoid her Step One recordings as well as anything that in on Deluxe, Compass, or anything that doesn't say "Decca," "MCA," or "Bear Family" somewhere on the package.

    Pray that Bear Family will release a 28 or 30 song cd of her hits.

    There must be a reason amazon posts this selection first among the Kitty choices. This one is a winner. Muriel Ellen Deason ("Kiity Wells") is a true to life native of Nashville. According to Billboard, she had 64 chart hits from 1952 to 1968. A representative 11 of them are included here and the other 5 fit right in. Kitty's plain and plaintive woman wronged no frills voice shines through. Highlights for this reviewer were "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God?","Password" and especially "A Woman Half My Age". That one just may be in the "Stand By Your Man" league of forgiving women songs! Those last 2 came late in Kitty's career and were composed in the (then) new "Nashville Sound". This woman is versatile! She handles those just as well as the traditional releases. This CD is absolutely recommended for no nonsense country sung by a real lady of the old school. As we know all too well, that school has been out of session for a tragically long time.

    This CD is absolute evidence that Kitty is still the queen of country music. In fact I don't think she even has a close rival for the title. She is the Hank Williams of female singers, the highest compliment I can pay her. Buy this CD and see what I mean

    I'm a big fan of Patsy Cline's music but in all honesty her vocal sound was more in line with pop music than Country. It doesn't however take away from any of her greatness. But Kitty Wells was pure uncut Country all the way-The female Ernest Tubb if you will. Two of my all time faves are on this cd- The classic "Will your lawyer talk to God" and "Password"-- oh yeah "It wasn't God who..." is also a favorite. These are the original tracks and therefore make this cd worth buying. We love ya Kitty !
