About the Artist
Rashid Abdullah aka Sun of Life: A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Sun of Life brings a combination of soulful lyrical flow with strong, no-holds-barred attitude by blending a love for life, respect and social commentary as a package deal. If you think these subjects have no place in today's rap music, no one told Rah this. Sun of Life's smooth and low-key delivery is what sets him apart from the other members of Urbanotic Soul. There are no limits with this man, a philosophy he lives by in his personal and professional life.
Calvin Curtis, aka Calliown:
I was born in Seattle and raised on hip-hop and gangsta rap. My influences range from Master P and E-40 to Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. Rap has always been the one thing I identified most with, and it gave me a vehicle to express myself in ways I couldn't through other outlets. I define my style as laid back and casual mixed with serious and thought-provoking messages. Although I grew up listening to gangsta rap, I never really lived that type of lifestyle, so I gravitate more toward reality as it pertains to the everyday, urban life in a feel-good sense. My rhyme style and delivery are what set me apart from the others in Urbanotic Soul because I bring a party flavor to the group, and deliver with a sense of lyrical foreplay. Red Shack and Urbanotic Soul are just getting started, and we intend to blow the roof off the current rap scene.
Kendle Harris, aka K.J:
Every now and then rap music gives us a diamond. K. J. is that rare gift. He possesses a natural ability to tell graphic and lighthearted stories with just enough rawness to suit the hard heads. His style comes in the spirit of Slick Rick or Dana Dane but with a southern, laid back flow. Listen to some of his tracks (Ah' Day Like This/ It Gets Better) and you will immediately feel and see what he's relaying. Without a doubt, K. J. can very easily be distinguished as the ladies' man of Urbanotic Soul. In addition to his playful and charismatic flow, he gives solid, uncluttered delivery and timing. K.J.'s laid back style is what he brings to the group and can he certainly hold his own when sharing tracks with his Red Shack family. This guy is guaranteed to be a driving force on the local hip-hop scene and beyond, and he intends to push the envelope with a fresh approach to hip-hop music.
I'm a southern boy all the way. My musical roots stem from all kinds of music, especially jazz, R&B, soul and old school hip-hop. I come from a family of poets, writers and singers, and of course it was passed on to me. Working on the Urban Tongues project allowed me to find my voice and style, which is sort of playful and a bit mischievous. My styles range from a storytelling style, to a playalistic word play, to a spiritual awareness. I rap about the things I know: getting the honeys, finding the party and giving props to the Man upstairs.
Shaka Shabazz aka Big Easy Love, aka The Commissioner
I was born in and raised in New Orleans, LA where music is simply part of the landscape. From blues, to jazz, to the second line and Mardi Gras, I was in the middle of it all. I also grew up listening to soul, rock, R&B and funk. I come from the old school when it comes to hip-hop and rap. I grew up with original break dancing, pop locking and rhyming. The first rap concert I saw was Grandmaster Flash with the Furious Five and Sugarhill Gang. That was it for me. The music was about partying, boasting, and having a good time without the hate and animosity played out today. I started out writing stories and poetry, but by the same time I came into manhood, Run DMC, Public Enemy, KRS-One and Rakim's music reflected what I felt and experienced. Watching these guys perform and put out records made me feel like any cat from the inner city can achieve the same thing through expression.
I categorize my style of production as experimental with references to the old school. My flow is also straight old school. No antics. No acrobatics. Just easy t

The Urban Tongues CD is about the average, hard working, inner city man and woman. It's about urban love and frustration. It's about the soul food joints and the African shops. It's also about the Muslim brothers who sell bean pies on the street and church goers who fill up the church on Sunday morning, some after partying all week. It's about the world inside and outside the hood. We're all not wanna be gangsters, drug dealers and homicidal parasites. There is so much to our culture, history and who we are and we want to express these things in our music. Amidst all the crap we face, we still smile and laugh hardily in the ghetto too. We don't knock what others are doing; we're simply giving our version of the story.
Urban Tongues CD is about having a good time and dealing with the stresses of life of urban life as well. We want get paid and live the good life in our lyrics, but it's not our primary focus.
