Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Three great performances and more good stuff !.......2005-11-22

The CD reissue of this long forgotten rarity of an album recorded during Kiki's brief late 60s signing with Motown is certainly cause for celebration. Apart from Chris Clark, Kiki was probably the only white female singer to have found herself on Motown's roster of artistes during the label's halcyon years. The result of her entire Motown sessions - including leftovers in the can - are included in this compilation.

Technically, Kiki had arguably a better voice than fellow Britgirls Cilla, Sandie and Lulu. She had a naturally strong and attractive raspy edge to her voice that should have been labeled "soulful" but wasn't, for it lacked "sympatico", an innate quality that's gifted, not learned. Dusty had heaps of it. Kiki wasn't so lucky, as a result of which success eluded her when the others were making it big in the 60s.

Kiki's Motown sessions sound as fresh today as it did in 1970. The original album contained at least three masterful and sublime performances that make this a lost classic, namely "Love Makes The World Go Round", "Johnny Raven" and "Jimmy". The album is worth owning for these three recordings alone. The first of these should have been an instant hit but sadly wasn't. The second easily tops the Supremes' 70s cover on their "Touch" album. The last of these is simply immaculate and from the sleevenotes, it looks like Kiki feels the same way. There're other good stuff like "Day Will Come Between Sunday and Monday", "Love Is A Warm Kind Of Sorrow", "Oh Be My Love", and a slowed down version of Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life". Others like "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" are blander and don't compare, respectively with Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell's and Dusty Springfield's (from "Dusty Definitely") more familiar versions.

Besides, Motown made some poor choices too. Kiki was ill advised to cover the Dusty #1, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". This dismal attempt at an alternative chorus arrangement to the Dusty original only succeeds in being awkward and inept. Likewise, Kiki sleepwalks through a perfunctory rendition of Smokey and the Miracles' "I Second That Emotion" that makes you wonder why they even bothered. The four previously unreleased bonus tracks (Tracks 15-18) are uneven including two similarly uninspired performances ("Walk On By" and "Put A Little Love In Your Heart") which are more like try out sessions and finally abandoned for good reason. Good to have for completists but that's about it.

Kiki's Motown session is more than a quaint slice of late 60s recording history. A little uneven perhaps - but hey, since when did Motown artistes make great albums before the Marvin Gaye "What's Going On " era ? - but there's magic in at least three of these performances and more good stuff, so that's good enough reason to go out and buy yourself a copy. Listen and enjoy !

Simply A Great Album.......2007-08-01

I'm probably a little biased myself, because I know Deon personally, but this album is simply great. It has THE BEST version of King of the Road, and I was crushed when Golden Classics didn't include it. I can't express just how excited I am that the original debut album is now on CD.

I may have a bias opinion since i've been hearing about him for years but this is actually a good cd. If Deon would of had a better manager he would have been a superstar, my personal superstar! But now he deserves to shine with this cd even if it's 40 years old!

I'm so glad to finally see Deon Jackson's debut LP released on CD. The original LP was released in 1966. I'm also glad that all of the tracks are in stereo, taken from the original stereo master tapes. Hopefully all of Deon Jackson's other great songs such as "Ooh Baby", "That's What You Do To Me" and "You Gotta Love" just to name a few, will also be released on CD very soon. Deon Jackson is an underrated performer whose music deserves to be heard.

I have been waiting for years for a new CD by David Sea. This is one of the most talented singing men in the world. He is right up there with all of the great singers and I have never understood why someone did not discover this many years ago. He should be making millions of dollars with a voice like his. Good that Tina is back.......2003-12-07

It's good to see that Tina is back. She tried it so often with B.O.Y., Sweetbox, ZZMusic etc and really deserves a comeback. The tracks are still very pop-ish which is good for the Japanese market but a bit outdated for the European market. It still reminds of Sweetbox but with less rap.

Great vocal melodies and lyrics.......2003-09-14

I like the sound of her voice and i remember her from the Sweetbox project. She toured with Brittany Spears and N'Sync. The song Everythings's gonna Be Alright.
