Amazon.com essential recording
Earth, Wind & Fire were consolidating their jazz influences into a tighter meld of funk and rock when Gratitude appeared near the end of 1975. Still, the improvisatory spirit burns hard on the three-quarters of the set taken from concert performances in the wake of That's the Way of the World's success. Highlights include hot takes on "Shining Star" and "Sun Goddess," as well as the studio cuts "Sing a Song" and "Can't Hide Love." --Rickey Wright

A message from Olivia...
"I am very proud to introduce you to my latest CD, Grace and Gratitude, so named for my appreciation of this incredible gift of life I have been blessed with! I hope these songs will help you to take time out of your busy life for relaxation or meditation. As a long-term cancer survivor, I have learned how important it is to take care of both my physical and emotional health. In my recovery, I became even more aware of the power of music. It can heal the body, calm the mind, and lift the spirit; but above all, it can connect us to our hearts."
Grace and Gratitude This "healing" CD was released in America September 25, 2006. It launched Olivia's signature line of body, heart and spirit wellness products for women.
Recorded in Toronto, Canada with Amy Sky who recently collaborated with Olivia her Stronger Than Before CD.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-06-26
I am going through a battle with cancer and I found the music on this album so uplifting and calming - I recommend it to everyone , and especially anyone facing some hard times, this is a great Album.
A Truly Healing CD.......2007-06-19
My mother gave this CD to me, and being in my middle twenties the only experience I have had with Olivia Newton-John is from the movie/musical Grease. To be honest, I was little skeptical about the cheesiness of this CD, but let me say that Olivia blew me away. The mixture between eastern and western religions, as well as melodies, is refreshing. In some of the more eastern influenced songs, the sound of Olivia's voice is almost haunting in a beautiful way. I would highly recommend this CD to everyone from Olivia Newton-John fans to people seeking relaxation through music.
Livvy - still brilliant.......2007-06-12
I, like a lot of these other review-ers, have been an Olivia fan for many many years.. 33 to be exact.
i remember buying my first Livvy cassette - Totally Hot. I think it burnt out (sorry!) after a couple of hundred play sessions.
BUT, I had not heard of this particular album, until a couple of weeks ago. As soon as i did, i was straight onto the website for a listen..
I think it took about 3 minutes to find my c/card & order two copies. One for myself, and one for my "new-age" mother-in-law-to-be. Who, after only knowing Grease), is now a new fan.
It's a brilliant album. whatever your mood.
Thank God CD's should last longer than the old cassettes - cause this one is going to get a huge physical (sorry!) workout.....
Livvy sounds brilliant.
"........AND I THANK YOU!!!!"
GOD what an album !.......2007-06-06
This is one of her best albums in her almost 40 years of her career , nice music which relaxes ur mind , ur heart and soul ...the lyrics are wonderful...Olivia's voice is fantastic in this new age album.
she has proved that she can sing pop, rock ,country, and new age as well ...this album is a real Gaia !i actually bought two cds one for my car and the other one as a gift for my family ( wife and kids)...thanks for OLivia who is still giving us her best talent.
Grease and Gratitude.......2007-06-01
Dear O has rather found her form again in recent years. Her covers album, 'Indigo', which debuted in 2005, was her strongest release in 15 years and 2006's 'Stronger Than Before' was a return to her lovely mid-70's hey day. When Olivia decided to release a 'healing' album that tied in with her body, mind and spirit wellness products, I couldn't hide my lack of excitement. Fearing a reprise of her 1994 self-written and produced 'Gaia' CD, an album filled with clunky lyrics and syruppy melodies, I nearly didn't get this album...
Well, luckily I was hopelessly wrong. This album ranks as one of Olivia's best ever. Over the past 10 years or so, Olivia's voice has suffered a little, but this could have been recorded 25 years ago. It's beautiful.
There are no real standouts, it's all wonderful and totally works as a soothing 60 minute CD with no tracks you'll want to skip.
That at 58 years old Olivia can come up with something of this quality is an inspiration to us all. I've often written her off but have to eat my words here. If the album only had a decent release, some strong airplay, I honestly believe it could go through the roof. Well done, Olivia!

The quintessential sound of the era.......2006-01-01
This is one of the few recordings I've owned in 8-track, cassette, vinyl, and now CD formats. The live cuts are so superbly tracked it sounds as though you are standing on the stage with the band. I love the slighly overdriven bass speaker cabinet, especially. Gorgeous vocals and an audience that came to celebrate... a must-have among your must-haves!
The Best Live Album, From The Best Group!!.......2005-01-05
I was introduced to EW&F's music while I was growing up. My dad has always been a huge fan of their music; he played their songs all the time. This album along with 'Spirit' really made me see that EW&F can't be touched when it comes to pleasing people musically. When I was really young I loved this album, and to this day I still love this album. In my opinion, 'Gratitude' is the best live album that I've ever heard and believe me, I've listened to many live albums. I also would like to add that this album includes the live versions of two of my favorite EW&F songs, 'Reasons' and 'Devotion.' I prefer the live versions of these songs better than the studio versions.
A very good live album.......2004-07-15
This is the kind of live album that shows that Earth, Wind & Fire was a strong combo on stage, featuring a dynamic set with lots of improvisation and hot playing. Just listen to Sun Goddess, Africano or Reasons. Unbelievable! isn't it? Definitively of one the best live albums ever.
We Give you Gratitude EW&F.......2003-12-04
They don't make them like this anymore. EWF has always been known for their live performances. Unfortunately, hardly any were recorded in those days and even fewer video taped. Which makes this classic disc even more of a keeper. As always, let's look at it song by song:
Intro/Medley (Africano/Power): This album was all about the excitement of being at a concert and that excitement starts from the very beginning. The crowd is cheering, overwhelmed by anticipation. MC Perry Jones announces them, "Presenting, Earth!...Wind!...and Fire! With that, the band comes in with that funky/jazz style that would later become their trademark. They launch into Africano first. In the midsection, the horns bellow out (literally) the intro to Power. The title fits the song, trust me. As usual, Verdine is really thumping that bass on this one. All in all, a great intro. Yearnin'and Learnin': One of my favorite songs by EWF and it's done even better live. During this time, the band had two drummers and if you listen closely, you can hear one set of drums in one speaker and the other set in the other speaker. The horns, always a strong point with EWF, really sour and bite hard on this one. Again, a great song made better live. Devotion: One of the more spiritual songs from the group, this song done live shows the communal part of an EWF show. When the ladies are singing "Yeah, yeah, yeah", it sounds like the ocean itself. Truly amazing. If you're a fan it makes you feel like you're there. If you're another musician, you envy it! Sun Goddess: This is a cut originally done with Ramsey Lewis, Maurices old stomping partner. Again, the sound of the crowd is as musical as the band itself. Larry Dunn's keyboard solo is great and just as good as Ramsey's original. Of course, Verdine just keeps rumbling along. Reasons: This live version I feel is one of the best songs of the 70's. The band is so much in sync, the crowd is again completly into it, and Philip Bailey's falsetto has never been better. Besides the the sax solo, which is grea, listen to the bass part. Verdine keeps it interesting to say the least. Sing A Message To You: This is a live interlude. It last about a minute and is repetitive but still cool. Check it out. Shining Star: Okay, I know I'm going to get it for this but.... this is probably my least favorite performance from the live set. Don't get me wrong, I love the song and think it's one of the best of the decade but in it's original studio form. Shining Star is such a studio creation that it just doesn't sound right outside of the studio. The best Shining Star live performance I've heard is on the EWF Greatest Hits Live disc but even that doesn't get a complete thumbs up from me. New World Synphony: This is a gift. From EWF to us, the listener. It is the best cut on the album. It shows the band as the jam session band that they were. It also shows the jazz influences they possessed. The last section is the best. Verdine White, or as he's known to his friends, the Fire, takes over on bass here with a lenthy solo that finnaly burst at th seams in the climax. But wait, that's not all! The band comes in to re-state what Verdine just did and finally the song is over. The cheers and screams heard at the end of this masterpiece is amazing. When Maurice says to the crowd "Can you say yeah?", they answer with a deafening sound. Again, a gift. Sunshine: A good, catchy pop song, with a great performance by Philip Bailey. Sing A Song: Another good pop tune with a sing-a-long type chorus. Nothing really special though. Gratitude: This is just low down funk. Verdine lays it down on the bass and Maurice takes care of the main vocals. Celebrate: Another funky yet eird tune about celebrating life in general. Chek it out and see what you think. Can't Hide Love: The best new song on the disc. Another gift from the elements. Maurices singing is awesome, Verdines bass intro is amazing and the horns, well, they're the EWF horns! The new CD includes a live set from a TV show but it pales to the concert. My only regret about this album is that the entire thing wasn't live. But if that was the case, we wouldn't have gotten Can't Hide Love in the package. So let's leave it like it is.

Alive in '75 and Gratitude both showcase the phenomenal sound of EWF on their 1975 world tour. The Super Audio CD(SACD) format is the ultimate playback format. Both SACD's have clarity, dynamic range and a sense of being eveveloped in the sound.
Incredibile!!!!!.......1999-02-26
This is one of the all-time best CD's. EWF was my 1st concert ever and subseqently saw them 3 other times. Gratitude and Interlude are the cd's best tracks. Maurice White's voice is pure magic!!! This is a must for any EWF fan.

Invite friends of all races, break out the bud and the Budweiser and get ready to party! This is an incredible album, from the bombastic MC-"Presenting- Earth-Wind-and Fire! to the anthemic "Devotion the Maurice White led crew never fail to deliver. Gang, this is how it should be done! Take notes!
All the Classics and it's a Live Concert !!!.......1998-09-18
All of your classic pre-EWF hits. Recorded during a live concert back in the early 1980's when EWF was at their peak, the pure energy of EWF. I had gone to all of the concerts of the pre-1980's and this is the best "record" of the pre-EWF hits. "Sun Goddess" is the "bomb", pure artistic energy and is not tracked on any other EWF record. If you want to know why Earth Wind & Fire are still performing today, buy this cd!!!

Saxophonist/flutist/bass clarinetist Chris Potter played with a lot of musicians in the 1990s--from Renee Rosnes to Grammy winners Steely Dan. On his first CD for Verve, he's backed by drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and keyboardist Kevin Hays, and the leader pays tribute to the great saxmasters of jazz with his muscular tenor tones and snaky soprano lines. "The Source" is a second-line-tempo take on John Coltrane's "sheets of sound." "Shadow" is a moody look at Joe Henderson, and the "saxophone colossus," Sonny Rollins, is heralded on the Latin-tinged "Sun King." Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" comes courtesy of Potter's bass clarinet, and Ornette Coleman's "Vox Humana" gets an Asian-toned flute treatment. Potter's love letter to his elders is music to our ears. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
One of the great new albums of the 21st century.......2005-06-22
I think Chris Potter is one of the most underrated saxophonists on the music scene today; he has played with so many great artists (steely dan) yet other saxophonists continue to be more recognised than him (branford marsalis) whom are in some ways not as skilled or musically diverse as Chris. There is not a bad track on this album; highlights for me are definitely Shadow, The Minds Eye and Sun King as they are the most progressive tracks. However everything is strong, perhaps the two solo tracks could have been lopped from the album however I see them as more of a bonus than as essential tracks. A modern classic.
Gratitude to you Chris!!!.......2004-09-12
If you love driving emotional saxophone reminisent of the 60's Quartets; this is a must own. The depth of the performers talent is clearly expressed on this wonderful effort. Brian Blade's ability to interpret, meld and create moods with his percussive prowess is outstanding. A must have!
Theres not much I can say.......2003-10-14
The only qualms i have with this album are with his supporting cast. And its not with their ability, but it seems at certain points that (especially the piano) are being too timid. He seems like he has tremendous ability, and shows his great ideas every so often during his solo, but never expands on them. The bass also struck me as a little timid.
Nothing wrong with the drums, Brian Blade plays his heart out on this one.
And as far as Chris Potter goes, what can I really say? His technicality is out of this world, and it seems there isnt anything he cant play that he would want to play. All his ideas flow straight from him exactly as he hears it. His phrases are extremely well constructed and preformed.
The music choice is outstanding. He doesnt try to "thank" the legends by playing how they did, but instead by trying to progress in the ways that they themselves progressed. On Star Eyes for instance, he takes a classic tune in to the realm of today and shows his prowess in it.
An overall MUST buy for ANY fan of jazz
A New Voice.......2002-07-24
It is not often these days to develope an individual voice in jazz. With lables dictating who is to recorded and distributed and telling the public what is good and not, Chris Potter is a rarity. This CD is one of the best CDs to come from a saxophonist in a while. Although it is a tribute CDs to the great sax players from the past, the tunes are original (like the players they pay homage to) and fresh. The blowing is first rate by the whole group and the production is beautiful. It is a must for everyone, not just jazz fans.
mesmerizing!.......2002-07-21
Chris Potter was a real discovery for me. This is THE best sax player i've heard... My only criticism is that there isn't more variety..it's low key in that respect...but very listenable time and time again.

Gratitude seems primed to take over where Jawbreaker and Promise Ring left off. Which makes perfects sense, since the band contains former members of emo stalwarts Far and Crumb. Full of emotion and conviction, the 12 songs on their debut ring out for their audience to jump and sing along at shows. Even the slower songs--such as "If Ever" and the unequivocal "Someone to Love"--are anthemic and catchy. If you're looking for some new emotional punk-pop, this could very well be it. --Robert Arambel
Album Description
Former Far frontman Jonah Matranga, along with ex-Crumb guitarist Mark Weinberg, is in charge of San Francisco-based Gratitude. While it's true that their resumes are filled with influential sounds and cultlike followings, Matranga and Weinberg are too excited about Gratitude's self-titled debut to think too much about the past. The 12-song album is filled with timeless rock and a batch of delicious hooks.
Customer Reviews:
Great Band, Great Music.......2006-06-30
This band is in my opinion one of the greatest highlights of Jonah's musical career. Every song on this cd is good, its just a matter of what songs are better than others. Driven, Someone to Love, Greatest Wonder, are my favorite. An excellent debut.
Finally.......2006-06-17
It's not too often that a great band comes along like Gratitude. I read about them in Rolling Stone Magazine and they gave Gratitude the highest score out of everyone on the "Up and Coming" artists. I was weary when I bought the CD, but once I slid it into the car stereo and "Drive Away" began, I was sold on Gratitude. They have become a regular in my rotation, which is saying a lot because I'm very picky when it comes to music and I don't listen to the radio, because they overplay everything. I recommend this band to anyone who enjoys U2, Matchbox 20, or even more pop-punk like The Academy Is. I have not gotten tired of this CD and I've owned it now for nearly a year. This is an amazing album, buy it!
Best Debut of 2005.......2006-01-17
It just is. Yeah, it's unfair to say. Jonah Matranga has been around the rock block a few times, and so it's hard to really feel like this is a debut, but it's the best that I've heard this year, in the wake of Bloc Parties debuting and Fall-out Boys breaking out into the scene. Unfortunately, neither of the best markets for Jonah's new work are destined to be very receptive.
It's safe to say that Gratitude isn't the jonah matranga of old, or indeed OLD. But it is. Listening to Far is a darker experience than listening to Gratitude. Onelinedrawing is more sad. New End Original is more experimental. But every one of Jonah's incarnations is the same naked lyricism, the same power-through-fragility vocals, and the same purpose musically. Gratitude is called Gratitude for a reason. It's a CD of hope. It's not as diverse as the rest of his work, but it's nothing unexpected and it's nothing of a reversal from what he's been going toward. We, the young, do not realize that a musician who's been in the business for a while changes, and must change to some degree to be honest to themselves. If you can't respect that, you can't respect the musician at all, even in their previous work.
As for the other side of the coin, it's hilarious for me to read the reviews of teens on here who would think Gratitude is trying to profit off the "emo" explosion, as if Jonah wasn't in Far paving the way for emo in the mid to late 90s. If there's anything I've learned about emo, it's that nothing IS emo unless you like it. Unless you hate emo, then it's the opposite. For example, forebears of the genre, like Sunny Day Real Estate, Weezer, and indeed Far, are not emo because they're well respected by non-emo people. Because of this, let's not use such a sordid and meaningless term. Gratitude are what modern rock in 2005 should sound like. Given the musical climate around them, given the changing tastes of people in general, Gratitude is the pinnacle of what modern rock radio should strive to be. It's straightforward, it's meaningful, it's well-produced and well-written and well-performed by some of the least pretentious people ever. It gets its point across without growling, without needing to mask words or add artificial anger (even the self edit in "This is the Part" reflects maturity, intentionally or not. Vulgarity is nothing to be ashamed of, but too much unrestrained makes anyone look like a dullard). It's the band you could play for your mom and dad and they might like too. It just encapsulates 2005 through rock music, and every other similar band is a reference point.
I'm not sure what show other reviewers "saw" them at, but when I got to see them, as headliners, Jonah seemed to be playing for his friends... he was half ecstatic child and half proud parent and seemed to make eye contact with everyone, as if the fact that we were there meant the world... and I'd assume that if you saw them at Warped, with scads of meaningless screamy flashes-in-the-pan, it would be safe to say this would be lost in the sweaty expanses of pseudo-punks shouting for the stuff that actually is generic emo. It's also safe to say no one should blow 50 bucks on merch for a band they didn't really like, but that's nitpicking.
The point is, simple though this CD is, there's a lot to it. If we were to listen to it without the blinders of the angry "devoted fan" who NEEDS more of the same from before, or with a mind open enough to accept that not everything need be tortured, whiny, and peppered with growling, there would be much more appreciation for this.
if ever.......2005-11-22
worth the 3 bux for the song "if ever".....but better yet.. save ur money and by the masters of horror cd cuz u get the acoustic version of that and a bonus mudvayne track.....but dont pay over 6 bux for it. this band sounds like every other pop rock band not emo but on the verge of it. 3 stars just because u gotta have talent to make music.
Excellent Pop-Rock/Pop-Punk CD.......2005-08-28
The best investment of $12.99 that I made this summer. I saw Gratitude at the Warped Tour in Orlando. Playing live, they sound just like their CD. It's a mix of mostly pop-rock and pop-punk tunes. "Drive Away", "Feel Alright", and "Begin Again" are the rockers. "This Is The Part" and "Sadie" are the pop-punk tunes. Gratitude sounds like they are influenced by U2. Overall, an excellent CD.

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "GRATEFUL FOR TOMMY'S BLUE COVER!".......2007-01-25
This is a good fun blues "cover" by Tommy Castro. It's probably the best, stick to blues CD (with some R&B) of his that I've heard. Covering everyone from a "bluesy" Ray Charles, to Albert King, to Howlin Wolf, to James Brown. Even finishing with a real good rendition of Buddy Guy's "When My Left Eye Jumps". On a personal note, one of Shaq's all-time favorites, Albert King, is covered with a surprisingly, bouncy, "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven." Tommy, certainly isn't laying any new, creative, roads, into the blues world, but with the dirge, of living, practicing, blues, performers, out there, this is worth picking up while you wait for Shaq, "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", to find some new "classic", gems for you!
Tommy's Cover Album.......2006-11-29
"Gratitude" is Tommy's tribute album to the blues pioneers who influenced him coming up. The album is all cover tunes including Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Howling Wolf, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Albert King, Wilson Picket, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Sam and Dave. Virtually a who's who of American blues rock. All of the songs on this album are done very well, and Tommy gives them enough of his own style to separate them from the original versions. I am not a huge fan of all the covers he does but some of them really work well. "44", "Bad Case Of Love" "Tulane", "It Serves You Right To Suffer" and "When My Left Eye Jumps" are all great. I feel like he played it a little bit safe on this album choosing obvious songs instead of some more obscure material that he might have been able to take in different directions, but overall this is a solid disc for fans of electric blues.
Tommy Castro's finest hour.......2006-11-13
This is the best album Tommy Castro has ever made. Nothing before or after has come close. He has a genuine talent for inturpreting other peoples material, yet he doesn't play each song in a note for note recreation, but brings some of Tommy Castro to each song, yet never loses the intent of the original.
He should make more albums like this. He is really, really good at doing this sort of thing. It is really hard to do. Many artists have tried to do this sort of thing but very, very few have been sucessful at at. Tommy has been blessed with a true gift.
2003! Tommy Castro is back in a big way.......2003-09-15
WoW! Two CD's out from Tommy this year. Both are a little different from what we have heard the past few years. This disc is Tommy's tribute to the blues masters who inspired him. This disc is gritty and tough and will easily go down as one of his best discs. The other "Triple Trouble" was really a disc that really isn't a Tommy CD but a guest starring role for him. Still a solid disc but if you want 100% Tommy Castro (and I sure do!). Gratitude is the CD to buy (although I bought both :))
Tommy Delivers Again...........2003-04-16
I have to say that this album, on first listen, was not what I had anticipated. I had hoped for more of Tommy's punchy guitar style and vocals. What I heard on numerous replay of this extrordinary CD is his attempt to recreate the style and nuance of the original artist, but with a subtle "Castro" overtone. His rendition of BB King's guitar style brought an enormous smile to my face as I drove down I-95. Buy this album. Period.
