Good compilation of an overlooked artist's work.......2006-03-09

Leroy Carr deserves more attention than he has received over the years. His music was far more influential than most of the other blues artists of the 1920s and 30s - at least until white folk enthusiasts and rock stars "discovered" delta blues singers in the 1960s. Carr has a relaxed vocal delivery and piano style that really grows on you upon repeated listening. This is a good compilation of his work. I think it focuses a little too much on his 1934 sessions, and is missing the classic "When the Sun Goes Down" (the song that inspired Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain"). It also misses the true variety of his output. However, I think the remastering on this set is better than any other I've heard. I recognize that the remastering of 78 era recordings is a matter of taste. The approach with this set was to remove the random clicks and pops, but leave the background crackle intact. In my opinion, this preserves the dynamic qualities of the original recording. By contrast, the "Essential" collection on Classic Blues is a typical example of remastering using heavy noise reduction. This removes most of the background crackle but leaves the music sounding dull and lifeless (to my ears, anyway). My one problem with the sound on this compilation is that some of the source material is inferior - I don't believe that these records are particularly rare.

Great Music - Disappointing Value.......2004-07-03

Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell made great music - no question about it, and much of it is included here.

However, for the price, I found this compilation to be disappointing as the remastering doesn't strike me as all that solid. I believe a MUCH better value is Leroy Carr's "Essential" two disk set which contains virtually the same songs at almost half the price.

I gotta tell you. this is one great album. The hard rock music has a lot of character and is top notch, the song writing is excellent, the arrangements superb and I love the singer, who reminds me of Shirley Manson.

If you like female fronted hard rock music, this is a must.

This is an excellent album from someone that really didn't get a whole lot of exposure and that's really a shame. His explosive and soulful voice gracefully commands every song he does on this album. Of course, the title track is honestly one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in quite some time. Even though it was released in '98-'99, it still hits your heart whenever your hear it. However, coming in a close second is the soothing "What Everybody Knows". Other tracks like his tremendous reworking of the classic Shirley Murdock piece "As We Lay" and "Tell Your Man He's Gotta Go" are also very notable listens. As a whole, this album showcases a badly misused and underappreciated artist and I really hope to hear more from him.

Marc Dorsey - Crave.......2004-06-26

When I first heard Marc Dorsey remake "People Make the World Go Round" in 1994, I thought that he was so smooth. He made a comeback in 1999 with this debut album and I was slightly disappointed. I thought that Dorsey would deliver songs as mature as the aforementioned one and take it to some old-school soul level like Eric Benet or Rahsaan Patterson. Instead, he gave us those hip-hop/R&B-type numbers, sounding like another Ginuwine or Jesse Powell (not that those artists are bad, it's just that I thought he would be representing another genre). And there were one too many remakes, especially "As We Lay": what was that about?! He should have left that song alone. But there are some highlights like the title track and "In the Ghetto". This album wasn't promoted at all and I can kinda see why.

Sleeper.......2001-10-24

This album is another that most people slept on. I actually just found out about it a few months ago. His song, the title track Crave, is featured on The Wood soundtrack. His entire CD is very good. My favorite is Crave (#4), but he also made a commendable attempt at the Shirley Murdock classic As We Lay and Stevie Wonder's All I Do. I was impressed as I'd never heard a man sing As We Lay. All in all, it's a worthwhile purchase.

The second outing by Ireland's Cyclefly finds them putting further distance between themselves and the rap-metal and alterna-rock treadmills, embracing a downright '80s melodic sense and dramatic scale. Even the lyrics from the opening "No Stress" (I can't hide my frustration / I don't like generation / We don't need your limitations") suggest that this is a band significantly less interested in fashionably reinventing the wheel than it is grounding itself in a little powerful history. Singer Declan O'Shea has drawn comparisons with alternative touchstones Iggy Pop and Perry Farrell, but his expressive, riveting vocals actually seem inspired by more wildly disparate sources, variously recalling Rush's Geddy Lee ("Selophane Fixtures") and the Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler (the rhythmic, low-key impressionism of the title track and the edgy, entrancing "Crowns"). The twin guitars of Declan's brother Ciaran and Nono Presta are powerful underpinnings throughout, whether grinding out stereotypical buzz-saw chords or the more lyrical riffing of the anthemic "Drive." But while it's refreshing to find a young band savvy enough to realize that a quarter century of punk rock has spawned its own considerable body of tired clichés, Cyclefly occasionally plays it a little too familiar when spreading their songwriting wings. Still, it's hard to argue with results that immediately grab a listener's attention and keep it so masterfully. This is the sound of a great young band still finding its voice--and a far cry from the sophomore slump. --Jerry McCulley

Good, but somehow lacking.......2003-03-15

I loved their first album, Generation Sap. From the day I bought Crawl Down, their debut single, on the strength of a review that compared them to Smashing Pumpkins, I craved (sorry!) every Cyclefly release. Generation Sap was fantastic in places, though never matched the first single (and leaving off Sellotape (the B-Side from Crawl Down, and still their best song, in my humble opinion) was a big mistake.
Crave, on the other hand, has lost that 'oomph' that made them so original first time around. The songs stick to their set structure, there is no random meandering like there was before, and Crave stinks of an attempt at corporate acceptance. Some songs are great, others aren't, and you can't help but cringe at some of the lyrics.
No Stress and Karma Killer are my standout tracks, but ironically my favourite song was a bonus track, Weary, off the UK release.
They clearly are a talented band, and have a distinctive sound, but I can't help but feel that in their attempt to commercialise they are going to miss out on the very thing they crave (sorry, again!) - commercial success.
A shame.

bring back generation sap!.......2002-05-06

The press section of Irish band Cyclefly's website is headed off with a quote from Linkin Park's very own Chester Bennington, which might indicate exactly what the problem might be on their new album, Crave. The highly original, quirky pop-rock-metal sound of Generation Sap, their first album, has dissipated, leaving behind diluted melodies and rhythms that reek of mainstream radio rock. Luckily, Declan O'Shea's signature vocals are distinctive enough to set the band apart no matter how monotonous their music gets, but that's not enough to distract an old fan from the fact that, not only is Bennington polluting the otherwise catchy "Karma Killer" with his vocal contributions, even the font used for the bands name on the cover seems reminiscent of Hybrid Theory.
Crave is Cyclefly's second album, released under the patronage of Bennington as well as major label MCA. Those who heard Generation Sap might not like the change that is evident on Crave. The opening track of Generation Sap, "Violet High", featured innovative guitar with a lot of pedal, and Declan's typically abstract lyrics set to a more captivating tune than anything on Crave. On the whole, the sound of the album was much more open, in contrast to the heavy, almost rap-metal feel of Crave.
Mourning the "old Cyclefly" aside, the album does have some good songs on it. One of the best is "Selophane Fixtures", which sounds more than anything else like everything that was good about Generation Sap. The pedal guitar is there, and the rhythm guitar isn't so heavy that you can't hear Declan's voice. "Lost Opinion" is good too, for the same reasons. And, lest someone think I'm one of those people who just can't stand it when a band wants to change their sound, "No Stress", "Karma Killer" (minus Bennington!) and "Crowns" are all good tracks as well, even while they explore new musical ground and lean towards a more metal-y sound. If Cyclefly were looking to evolve and mature, this should be the direction they should be heading in. But the inclusion of such tracks as the totally non-descript "Crave" (the title track, for god's sake!) and "King For a Day" seems to indicate that Cyclefly are headed for not maturity, but conformity and mass acceptance. Or that they're trying to sound like Linkin Park, not that there's a difference.
For the record, I completely respect a band's right to experiment with their style and sound, but I fear that attention from MCA and Mr. Linkin Park are having a less-than-beneficial effect on the truly unique band that is Cyclefly...

This album is pretty damn good.......2002-04-04

Although they've softened up a bit on this record, the quality of the songs are still great. I honestly got into these guys first because Declan's voice sounds so much like Geddy Lee's, and although that doesn't change, I think lyrically, he's really come into his own. Best song on here is definitely "Karma Killer" because Chester Bennington from Linkin Park is on it. I hope this becomes a big hit for these guys.

For what turned out to be a breathtaking and utterly epic album, "Crave and Collapse" was a swan song for a band that is no longer together. Originally released in October of 2003, "Crave and Collapse" withdrew some of the fundamentals of hardcore and enhanced it with a progressive and seemingly graceful edge that was the equivalent to an album put out by bands like POISON THE WELL, THURSDAY and even EARTHTONE 9. Unfortunately, this will be the last vestige of a band that played their music with style and demanding conviction. This excessively precise album weaved in and out of hardcore beatings in between a crystal clear layer of ear popping melodies. This two-fold method is part of a currently popular flavor as we all know but NARCISSUS designed their songs to be fortified with more passion and power then their counterparts. Considering the album length that rings in at around 61 minutes, you are assured an honest effort from the band even though at times, it might have been somewhat too large in scope. It was a shame that such a piece of work will more than likely fall on deaf ears and may never receive the respect it deserved. Show some love for a band that was on the cusp of something huge and pick this one up.

a breath of fresh air.......2003-10-18

Hardcore today has become stale and boring. Everybody now draws their sound from some influences of another hardcore band in the past that was groundbreaking(see early Zao albums for a good example). Melodic hardcore isn't much different. Most melodic hardcore bands follow the same format: melodic guitars and clean vocals with a heavy breakdown midsong and some screaming. Narcissus could be classified as a melodic hardcore band, yet they defy the conventions of the genre. Instead of copying someone else's sound, they have managed to create a sound all their own. The vocals(both clean and screamed) do not sound like anyone else who has already done it. The guitar also has it's own unique sound. There is a heavy amount of ambience to the clean parts and the keyboard at the beginning and end of songs. The breakdowns have a sort of groove oriented heavy thrash sound to them. It's hard to describe. Narcissus has been perfecting their sound for a while now. New Wave Techno Homicide was mostly heavy with occasional clean parts. Becoming Leviathin was mostly clean with some heavy parts. This album seems to be a mixture somewhere in between. It is both heavy and clean, but more leaning towards the Leviathin sound. Although some comparisons could be made to other melodic hardcore bands like Haste or Silverstein, Narcissus is a very unique sounding band. Crave and Collapse is not a dissapointment at all. I was left wanting more when I got Becoming Leviathin. I found myself fully satisfied after listening to this album. It is 13 solid, great tracks. If you like melodic hardcore, this album is a must own. Hopefully, abacus will do a good job distributing and promoting Narcissus. They deserve it. A bunch of great guys with an original sound.

Variety, striking guitar work, and an attention to detail rivaling Stevie Ray Vaughan and Slowhand himself have created something great. The age of buying a CD for one good song is over: kudos to the Jerry Henry Band. The title track alone is enough to bring me coming back for more. One Way Ticket is a brilliant piece of work, carved out with obvious influences in mind, while Closing Time Blues is an instant blues classic with a great chord progression. The instrumental finale Return to Cero is (in my opinion) a musical masterpiece. Rock or blues, call it what you will, The Jerry Henry Band's "Rockin' The Blues" is a hit.
