Kool G Rap DJ Polo's "Road to the Riches" had been a long time coming when Cold Chillin' released it in 1989. It didn't disappoint. After some successful singles and G Rap's contributions to Marley Marl's Juice Crew, the duo arrived almost fully formed on its debut. Whether boasting (his greatest strength at this point) or spinning tales, G Rap's knife-edged rhymes -- delivered with the hardest-sounding lisp in hip-hop -- tear through Marley Marl's productions and DJ Polo's scratching with all the ferocity of a pit bull devouring a piece of meat. Though tracks like "Poison", "It s a Demo", and the title track won this record a lot of respect, there are several other moments that help make this a remarkable debut. On "Men at Work", lines like, "I drop rhymes on paper and then build a skyscraper/When I die scientists will preserve my brain/Donate it to science to answer the unexplained" whip by so fast that it s easy to overlook Marl and Polo's perfectly snarling, densely percussive backdrop. Marl's imaginative sampling gleans from all sorts of unexpected sources, like the harmonica from Area Code 615's "Stone Fox Chase", the odd phasings of Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" (no one used it like this), and the burbling synths from Gary Numan's "Cars" (remember, this was the late 80s). A Great Deluxe Treatment for a Classic Rap Album.......2007-02-28

Kool G Rap-- His lisp is still crisp-- Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop, he blazed a trail for several rappers to follow, despite being relatively unknown by mainstream standards. He's kind of like Iggy Pop of the hip hop world-- he never sold a tremendous amount of records, but he maintains a cult following that won't quit, while scores of newcomers point to him as an influence.
The 2 disc collection starts off in the late-1980's, back when the Marley Marl-led "Juice Crew" was among the early hip-hop posses to achieve prominence, being signed to Prism Records, which eventually would become Cold Chillin'. Shortly afterwards, label head Ty Williams secured a distribution deal with Warner Bros.
"I'm Fly" and "It's a Demo" are sparse early tracks which makes listeners focus even more on Kool G's lyrics. At this time, he was somewhere between LL Cool J and Rakim, spouting whimsical braggadocio with occasional inflections of sober battle-ready aggression. His technique would be fine-tuned on his first album, "Road to the Riches", featuring the title cut, "Dope Car" (sampling Gary Numan), "Poison", and "Men at Work". Marley's 808-driven funk production is at it's best here. The first disc has the original album and a few bonus cuts including the early, non-album singles. The second disc has a great collection of rarities, including radio promos & interviews, as well as alternate takes, remixes & instrumentals which were previously only available on 12" maxi-singles during the original release of the album (the best of the bunch: an alternate take of Big Daddy Kane's "Raw" featuring Kool G. The collection has better than average liner notes, including commentaries from photographer George DuBose, Ty Williams and Kool G Rap himself. There are also lyrics printed for all the original songs.

The opening track here is aptly titled "The Feeling I Get," because there is a certain good vibe to Brown's style and his melodies. Brown's use of swinging horn sections and the way he pads his lines with reeds, blending in swirls of triplets with his Wes Montgomery/George Benson sound, can't help but make real smooth-jazz lovers feel good and smile. The expert pen of the tasteful veteran arranger Jerry Hey on the opener (and the following title track) magnifies this unique sound. This album takes a left turn on the four vocal tracks. Chante Moore and Michael McDonald totally dominate their turns, but the other two are real gems. Singers Debbie Nova and Miki Howard, respectively, on "Won't You Stay" and "Not Like You Do," mix in their neo-soul style perfectly as Brown sounds like himself, not just another guitarist playing behind a singer. Even then, the vocals get in the way of a fine guitar player. To really hear a great new Norman Brown record, program the CD player to skip the singing. Other standouts include the bouncy "Night Drive" (featuring Rick Braun) and Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile." --Mark Ruffin

The Best New Smooth Jazz Guitarist Around. A must have for your collection.

This album...weak weak weak... as far as I'm concerned, Norman hasn't played Jazz since After The Storm, arguably Better Days Ahead. Vocals are bad enough, but Norman singing lead on various tracks is just horrible.

Another strong outing by Brown.......2003-11-09

Norman Brown is that rare smooth jazz artist these days that falls comfortably between the roots of his form and the tastes of the forms modern audience. If you're into traditional jazz, you can't help but respect the guy's guitar playing. If you're into smooth jazz, he's the most complex mainstream act in the vein. Even when he handles such radio staples as Janet Jackson, he doesn't do what most acts do and simply play the vocal notes on his instrument of choice over an essentially instrumental version of the original. His covers retain and add mad soul, and his arrangements are not to be slept on. He covers stuff second only to Stanley Jordan (his cover of Michael Jackson's "Lady in My Life" from his 1990 "Magic Touch" album) is the most perfect smooth jazz cover ever), who simply refuses to release anything new these days, so Brown is a fine replacement. While he dots this record with fine singers, I'm ever-drawn to the instrumental work on his records. These tracks showcase his incredible ear for a well-constructed and pleasing song, and his playing really shines on tracks where his is the sole voice.

Not a classic like his "After the Storm" record, but a solid purchase through and through.

That which is Jazz is good music but, there are far too many vocal selections. I buy and listen to Jazz for the quiet times. I find most vocals contained on many Jazz CD's to be an intrusion. Were these vocal additives true Jazz vocals they would be fine.

Marley Marl remained on board, and Large Professor and Eric B. also hopped on to help produce Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's second album. With a wider range of sounds and the expansion of G Rap's lyrical range, "Wanted: Dead or Alive" is wholly deserving of classic status. The opening "Streets of New York" remains one of the most thrilling and unique rap singles released; the sparse rhythm, adorned with assured piano runs that complement the song to the point of almost making the song, falls somewhere between a gallop and a strut, and G Rap outlines more vivid scenes than one film could possibly contain. The track cemented their role as East Coast legends and showed Kool G Rap's talent as an adept storyteller like nothing before or since. Likewise, "Talk Like Sex" is the nastiest, raunchiest thing he ever recorded, with "I m pounding you down until your eyeballs pop out" acting as an exemplary claim, as well as one of the few that is printable, made in the song. The boasts, as ever, are in no short supply, but "Erase Racism" takes a break from the normal proceedings with guest spots from Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie. It's both funny and sobering, with Biz's Three Dog Night chorus providing comic relief after each verse. This album is only part of a major swarm of brilliant rap records from 1990, but it will never be lost in it, and it's important because it's the release that influenced Rakim and Kane to step their game up to levels they didn't know they could go to. Now a Re-Release? I just bought the original on ebay last fall for over $100 and now its gets re-released with a 2 CD packe with remixes for under $20, wtf? This is upsetting to me. But anyways, great album "Letf Me Lonely" is Classic!

Classic Golden Age Hip Hop from MC Shan.......2007-05-12

Shawn Moltke, a.k.a. MC Shan, was an aspiring hip-hop MC from New York City, who grew up in the now-infamous Queensbridge housing projects. Hooking up with cousin Marlon Williams (a.k.a. DJ Marley Marl), they produced a string of singles for the indie Prism label which led to a recording contract for a full album from Cold Chillin'/Warner Bros. Records. The results are contained here in Shan's first full-length LP, "Down By Law". Needless to say, Shan was affiliated with the loose-knit rap collective The Juice Crew, and his aggressive style brought him into conflict with the rap group Boogie Down Productions, who quickly became the Bronx-based regional rivals to the Queens-centric Juice Crew.
The new Traffic archival release, "Down By Law" has all the early, pre-album singles by MC Shan, like "Jane, Stop this Crazy Thing", Left Me Lonely", "Kill that Noise", and the undisputed classic "The Bridge". The 2-disc set (30 cuts deep!) also includes an almost overwhelming amount of bonus material in the form of numerous 12"-inch/EP alternate takes, remixes, and rare recordings like radio freestyles and live-in-concert recordings.

Pros:
Marley Marl's production was pioneering in hip-hop, one of the first to make extensive use of the then-available sampling technology of such machines as the TR-808 and SP-1200. Drum, bass and horn licks from the likes of James Brown and more can be heard here for the "first" time. MC Shan is a capable rapper succeeding more as a storyteller, though he has capable freestyles and battle-raps. With his Queens allegiance, Kangol cap and pin-up good looks, he was kind of a lesser-known LL Cool J. Surprisingly, Shan lays his substance abuse issues bare with "Cocaine".

Cons:
The romantic sentiments of "Left Me Lonely" are short-circuited by the sexism of "Jane..." and "Project Ho" (both about women who can't give up a sex/drug fix). Given that Shan's follow-up albums, "Born to be Wild" and "Play it Again, Shan" failed to have the same commercial impact as his debut, "Down By Law" is virtually his defining artistic statement, especially when you consider the bonus material. Only MC Shan completists should look further.

These are Marley Marl's classic compilations "IN CONTROL", vol.1 & 2 from '88 and '91. Some of the best of the "COLD CHILLIN'" recordings are here. Two classics for the price of one! DOPE!!

LIVE AND DIRECT FROM THE HOUSE OF HITS!!!!!.......2002-05-28

Any TRUE hip-hop fan of yesteryear knows that THE HOUSE OF HITS was the name for Marley Marl's studio. The new installment from "THE BEST OF COLD CHILLIN'" series is a long time coming. Some may disagree with the rating of 5 stars, but I'm giving it the 5 star rating mostly on the strength of the first installment "IN CONTROL VOLUME 1". Even though many magazines often overlook this album, when it was released in 1988, it was considered a classic. With classic songs like "THE SYMPHONY"(the FIRST posse song and arguably the best in hip hop history), "DROPPIN' SCIENCE", and "FREEDOM", how can you go wrong? This album also contains the underground late 88-89 mix show classics "WE WRITE THE SONGS" (featuring Biz Markie and Heavy D. in what has to truly be considered one of the Hevster's BEST lyrical outings EVER as they trade verses back and forth), "DUCK ALERT", and "LIVE MOTIVATOR". The second disc is "IN CONTROL VOLUME 2:FOR YOUR STEERING PLEASURE" which Marley recently admitted that he did just to fulfill his contract obligation with Cold Chillin'. The album isn't a TOTAL dud. There are some bright moments like "THE SYMPHONY PT. 2" (which can't hold a CANDLE to the original...but is decent nonetheless), "I BE GETTIN'BUSY" (LL COOL J), and "AMERICA EATS THE YOUNG" (featuring CHUCK D. and TRAGEDY when he was the INTELLIGENT HOODLUM and before he just totally thugged out and became TRAGEDY KHADAFI). Pick this double cd up if you want to hear some classic material AND a producer that greatly influenced many hip-hop producers from PETE ROCK(who Marley tutored)to DJ PREMIER. Along with 45 KING no one producer held it down as well as MARLEY MARL....the true QUINCY JONES/GODFATHER of hip hop producers....

When the Wu-Tang Clan came out of the gate in late 1993, they brought with them a new style, a style that literally changed the rap game just as Dr. Dre had done a year earlier. But even though it seemed like the Wu came from nowhere, they actually had a rather modest beginning. Â“Words From the GeniusÂ” is that beginning. Originally released in 1991 on the mighty Cold ChillinÂ’ label, the album features the Genius, and to a lesser degree RZA (here known as Prince Rakeem). Pretty good 1st album from GZA/Genius.......2006-10-18

This was way before the Wu-Tang days, I think originally recorded around 1990 (just look at him on the cover), when it was the the RZA (who was known as Prince Rakeem and had a single out around the same time called "We Love You Rakeem" which never really caught any buzz) and the Genius (not even the GZA yet) so don't expect the classic Wu sound and Ol' Dirty may have been with them at the time but I'm not sure. You get the golden age of NY hip-hop beats (mid 80's), nothin fancy but a drum machine and maybe a twist thrown in here and there. The album is good for it's age although I heard it only sold around 11,000 copies when first released due to lack of marketing (same with RZA's single which led them to start the mighty Wu-Tang). Standout tracks are the Classic "Pass the Bone" f/ RZA = one of my favorite tracks that any of the 2 are on - ever -- It's that nice of a song, and "Words from the Genius", "Who's Ya Rhymin Hero", "True Fresh M.C's", "Those were the Days", "Life of a Drug Dealer". They're my favorites but the others are still nice, a must ahve album for fans to see where the Great Wu came from.

GZA GENIUS.......2006-10-06

First Cd by Gza, and this cd plays like a dope old rakim CD. It is one of those chillen CDs, where your just smokin a nice blunt while you here the briliant rhymes and rhythems. Cop it, it used to be a rare cd, but now it was re-released in 2006. Peace out1

In 1966 James and Bobby Purify hit number six on the pop charts with "I m Your Puppet". Thirty-four years later Cutmaster Cool V and Biz Markie freaked "Puppet" and a generation of b-boys and b-girls got down to a loop their parents sock-hopped to. Lyrically I.U. wrecked the competition with punchy lines that bounce on Markie's drum pattern and float over these classic piano keys. "Soul Touch" is NY scratch rap at its roots and its best. I.U.'s brother Kay Cee provided the cuts and probably found the chorus sample. I.U. is great on this track. Line after line he commands rap cliches before they could be called cliches. The man raps, "So let the soul be heard, `cause it s preferred and that's word to Big Bird", I.U. had this on record way before anyone else. "Smooth Assassin" was entirely produced by the legendary Biz Markie with help from his DJ Cutmaster Cool V, recorded at the infamous Power Play Studios in Queens and engineered by DJ Doc of B.D.P. fame. Recommended, With a Couple of Reservations.......2005-11-18

This is the fourth Bach CD I've gotten in this series and the first one that I would rate as having less than a perfect score of five. The other three Bach CDs I have in this series are "Bach for Book Lovers," "Bach for Bedtime," and "Bach for Breakfast." The first two are intended to be for quiet times and relaxation and are similar to the "Bach for Relaxation" and "Bach for Meditation" CDs I have, to which I would also give a score of 5.

This CD gets a score of 4 instead of 5 because of 3 of the 17 selections, especially 2 of them. Track 8 is the famous Prelude in C major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, transcribed for harp and performed by Marisa Robles. Part of the beauty of individual performances of music is the unique quality of each performer's interpretation of that music; that can certainly include tempo, especially with Bach's music, where it is not completely certain exactly at what tempo he would have performed it himself. However, I have heard this particular composition performed by several different musicians, including F. Gulda on the "Bach for Book Lovers" CD and Sviatoslav Richter on his multi-CD set of the complete WTC. Moreover, I have heard it performed on piano and guitar and would normally welcome a performance on the harp. But Robles' performance is at a faster tempo than these others and sounds a bit rushed, not leaving one with the leisure to enjoy the beauty of the melody.

Two other less-than-satisfying tracks are the back-to-back extracts from Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. I have the complete 2-CD set of these Sonatas and Partitas recorded by Henryk Szeryng and, aside from preferring Szeryng's performance to Gidon Kremer's, I find these two selections out of place on this CD. This compilation is supposedly for persons having a few friends over for a barbecue. While that may seem like an over-literal interpretation of the CD title, even the CD booklet includes three barbecue recipes: (1) Sebastian's Special Sauce; (2) Tender & Tangy Baby Bach Ribs; (3) Branden-Burger.

The partitas and sonatas for solo violin have a great and timeless beauty, but one that is generally stark and intense. Not that this CD should only have "Bach-lite" on it. In fact, track #13, Contrapunctus No. 9, from Art of the Fugue, and track #14, Fugue in G minor "The Great Fugue" BWV 542, are masterpieces of Baroque depth and complexity. At the same time, these performances by Neville Marriner and the ASMF and by the Suttgart Chamber Orchestra are engaging as well as complex, and draw the listener in. Such is not the case for the two solo violin tracks performed by Kremer, which ask for more intense concentration from the listener.

At least the Bouree from Partita No.1 has an upbeat, optimistic tone that is consistent with the other tracks on the CD; one might conceivably hear and enjoy it at a barbecue. But the next track, the Preludio from Partita No.3 for Solo Violin, seems more appropriate for a barbecue cut short by gathering storm clouds. This is a beautiful but somber piece that doesn't fit in well with the other 16 selections on this CD. Its mood is heavy, deep, and intense, and its beauty is dark and melancholy. One can only imagine what the people at Philips were thinking when they decided to put a selection like this on a CD entitled "Bach for Barbecue."

The peformances of the other selections by I musici, Pepe Romero, Andras Schiff, and the great Belgian violinist, Arthur Grumiaux, are wonderful. Recommended, with a couple of reservations.

Invite Bach To Your Next Barbecue.......2005-09-27

Johann Sebastian Bach may be dead and one may present the debate that his music is also dead (1600-1760) but this doesn't stop Bach from being the musical DJ at a first-rate barbecue. This title from the Set Your Life to Classical Music series is perfect background music for a most interesting and colorful summer barbecue, 4th of July barbecue or Labor Day barbecue. The music is so brilliantly played, vivid, lively and entertaining that it will pose no problem to anyone who appreciates good music. The celebrated ensemble I Musici, as well as guitarist Pepe Romero and violinist ARthur Grumiaux contribute to the overall beauty of this recording. Bach's individual style, which indeed does not compare to Handel or Vivaldi's, is strong in these musical pieces which include the danceable, festive Allegro from the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, the Suite for Solo Cello, the Brandenburg Concerto 3's lively Allegro, Two Part Invention for Keyboard No. 1, Brandenburg Concerto 4 and 5's allegro movements, Partitas for Solo Violin, Fantasia and Fugue For Organ in G Minor, Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Major allegro and the CD closes with the Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D.

Particularly good are the Brandenburg Concerti, Keyboard and Violin pieces and the excellent interpretation of the Allegro movement of the Violin Concerto No. 2, which I've never heard sound better anywhere else. This is a fun, lively recording and a fine way to hook yourself or your friends into classical music. The dour-looking, highly religious Protestant Bach may not have himself attended barbecues, but surely he would be most pleased to know that his music is still beloved enough to suggested as a piece for background in a barbecue. I can't say enough good things about the Set Your Life To Classical Music Series. The cover art on these CD's are so cute, hilarious and witty and are the most perfect introduction to classical for young people. And for adults who would otherwise never hear classical.

This CD is one of the best CDs to listen to when you are a classical fan and you need some nice fast music. This CD is a really classical, very nice played CD. This CD is a Must Buy Product for Classical Music Fans.

A classic for true Hip Hoppers.......2005-07-04

In a commerical industry, there is always one who steps out of the crowd and distinuishes themselves as a truly innovative and unique artist.

Master Ace, is truly that. This album is a classic. All songs have a message and are lyrically tight with quality production.

It is a shame that nowadays, the youth only get to hear such a small tidbit of good hip hop.

If you are looking to have a classic collection, get this album.
It is great.

Just listen for yourself and you be the judge. I know anyone yet who didnt get this album.

One of the Most Heartfelt Rap Albums Ever!!!.......2004-03-17

Unfortunately, rap music this vital is all but extinct in the shallow world of hip hop today.I first heard this debut from Ace when it dropped in mid 1990.I played the cassete over and over everywhere I went. I recently picked it up on CD, and it sent me back 14 years in time when I last heard it. I can more appreciate the wide range of topics and emotions in the verses Ace spits from the heart, now that I'm older. In nearly every song, Ace creates an atmosphere through his words and the dope music that takes you to the scene of the rhyme. Being only 22 at the time of it's release, Ace has a very mature and confident demeanor throughout this record. Songs like "Brooklyn Battles", "The Other Side of Town", and the title track offer an emotional perspective of everyday life in the streets of Brooklyn. Though much of it is bleak, Ace also tends to keep a more positive outlook as well. In the title track he acts part ghetto informant and part motivational speaker, discussing the issues that face the increasingly less fortunate in America. His wisdom in this song, among others, seems stronger than any of the dribble coming out of the mouths of this nation's leaders, right or left.Back to the music, "Me and the Biz" was the biggest single off the record and had a classic video to boot. For those who don't know, the video featured Ace hanging out with a lifesize Biz Markie marrionet(puppet)! Ace is the ventriliquist for the song and video. It seemed that Ace had one upped his friend, the reigning prince clown of rap! Probabally one of my favorite rap videos of all time! Definitely one of the most original. "Music Man", also a single,sums up Ace's personality and style in the rap game in one funky-ass party jam. "Together", actually a single from late 89', takes you on Ace's journey towards success and meaning in life. He tells the listeners who are striving towards their goals in life "we'll take a drink from the fountain of success, yo let's all climb the mountain together" Wow, let's see if 50 Cent or Eminem can match that. In actuality Master Ace is probabally one of the most down to earth mc's who ever ripped a mic. I cannot say enough great things about the CD, you have to hear it for yourself. You will be wiser and more ambitious in life after hearing it. Probablly the best rap album of 1990, and in the top 20 Rap Albums of all time. Also of note is Ace's last album,"Disposable Arts", probabally the best rap record of 2001. If you are a fan of the REAL HIP HOP, and appreciate some intellageance in your lyrics, then Masta Ace is your man. If you're looking for the ho's, the blunts, and the bling blings, then you probabally got here by accident. Peace to all true hip hop lovers! I'm outta here.

Masta Ace is the most clever, intelligent rapper in the game HANDS DOWN! The fact his music over the years for the most part has gone unnoticed is a tragic episode. Not only does he lift rap to a respected art form but his clever ryhmes and teaching abilities is a asset to us all. The album SlaughterHouse is my favorite. Ace deserves more reconizing from the hip hop world as a whole. Unfortunelty greatness is never truly appreciated until the bitter end. Thanx 2 Ace real hip hop still exsists today in 2000 .
