Wonderful!.......2006-01-08

As a Seneca mother, I really enjoyed this cd with traditional songs intermixed with Shanendoah's telling of how she "found" her voice. This cd is refreshing with Iroquois ideas represented easily so that even my three year old daughter recognized them -- her eyes lit up when she heard Grandma Moon singing! (I alway KNEW she could sing pretty," my daughter exclaimed.)

I recommend this cd.

My four and a half year old daughter loves this cd, we both do, really. Ms. Shenandoah's voice carries itself into your heart and holds itself there. The songs are haunting and uplifting at the same time. The narration is compelling and interesting. I can't wait to explore more of her work. This is a must-have cd, especially for children.

Wonderful story & music - just wish she hadn't used "stupid".......2000-11-08

WE LOVE THIS CD. The story is beatifully told the music is eclectic, with a dash of blues, easy listening, country and just plain FUN. I highly recommend with one caveat ~ she uses the word stupid in the lyrics in the first song. Maybe it's just our family, but I cringe every time she bellows out "I'm just a stupid girl..." I usually lower the volume on that part. I have little ones and it's exactly the kind of terminology they'd pick up. That's the only reason I didn't give a whole-hearted five star rating. Other than that the CD is terrific. Everyone who gets in my car (great entertainment while driving to school) loves it. It's GREAT!

This album doesn't really give the full right to Shenandoah's enticing voice and the beauty of the harmonics, though it is fun to listen to.

Women Can Be Outlaws Too.......2005-07-05

For those of you who think Lucinda Williams is a dirty lowdown country slut but you like her anyway, you'll thrill to Mary Gauthier. My favorite of many excellent songs is The Ledge, a scary tune about being at the bottom and looking up at all the jerks above you. The reason Gauthier hasn't yet hit the big time may be that she doesn't write enough songs about BOYS. I mean, it worked for the Rolling Stones, but hey, this is a funny country.

Great but demanding album.......2004-05-22

"Filth & Fire" is a great album. I don't know whether Gauthier's previous albums are as good as this one, but, if so,
I wonder why she isn't as famous as the other gal coming from Louisiana (that is, Lucinda Williams).

The standout here is "Sugar Cane": a narrative about the environmental pollution caused by (guess what?) a sugar cane factory in the Mississippi Delta. Because of its social commentary, this song is steeped in the best tradition of folk music, but it's also a plain good country song with harmonica and fiddle providing a nice texture. After just one listening, you'll know the chorus by heart ("From Thibodaux to Raceland, there's fire in the fields...").

"Sugar Cane" also epitomizes the double nature of this album: committed, social-conscious lyrics, often verging on bleakness and hopelessness, wrapped up in upbeat layers of sounds supplied by harmonica, fiddle, lap steel, mandolin and slide guitar.

For instance, you'll love the mandolin that introduces the refrain in "Good-bye", even though the words are anything but joyful: "Born a bastard child in New Orleans to a woman I've never seen...". Or, in "Merry-go-round": "From the milky white of heroin as it bubbles and sooths, the dirty sheets you lie on with nothing left to lose". To complete this journey to hell, give also a listening to "Christmas in Paradise" and "Camelot Motel". I spare you the grim details here.

But beware, she's not striking a pose. She sounds honest even when she describes her homeless Christmas under a bridge with her vagabond companion (as in "Christmas in Paradise").

So, don't be intimidated by this album. There are also a couple of love songs; for instance, "After you're gone" is
pure vintage country, a nice duet with Gurf Morlix. Even though all players are top-notch, this guy deserves the
highest praise, because he plays most of the instruments and produces the album.

"Filth and Fire" ends in a calm tone. "The sun fades" is basically just her voice and an acoustic guitar. Her attitude is serene and makes me hope her next album will be a little bit brighter lyrically and the same musically.

One of The Best Albums I Have Ever Heard!!!!!!.......2003-07-03

I've been in radio for 38 years. Yeah I'm getting older. Part of the problem with loving music and having to work with it everyday is that you get jaded. You get cynical. Then along comes Mary Gauthier. Her 3rd album. Her first for me. It is dark. It is brilliant. She has made me remember what I felt like when I first heard Bob Dylan. When I first heard The Band. When I first heard John Prine. When I first heard Leonard Cohen. Thank you Mary Gauthier and thank you God for giving her this amazing talent. I can only give 5 stars. I would have given it 10!

Downright home spun fire and brimstone.......2003-06-14

Mary Gauthier is a prophet of country folk. She tales a dark tale of Johnny Cash spirituality and down on your luck grittiness. She is authentic and Louisianian. She is apocalypse coming to a bayou. She is real and a damn fine listen at that.

The authentic life she portrays is refreshing in a neuvo biblical Revelations sort of way. Her accent isn't a put-on. She knows of stories of hard times and falls and fires. Her music is stripped down unpretentiousness. Old country pure and black.

She summons ghost of Neil Young (if he were dead...God forbid), Cowboy Junkies, Nancy Apple, Roseanne Cash, Robert Earle Keene,and many many more. The songs, though sometimes painful and dark, invite repeated listens. You will get the real deal and turn heads listening this with windows rolled down, a hound dawg panting in your ear, '67 chevy truck at a stop-light in a one-horse town.

Excellent Mens Corale (about 100 men) sing inspiring Christmas Music !!!.......2005-11-22

This is probably the best men's chorus (approximately 100 singers from across America) I have ever heard recorded. The album jacket indicates each of the participants are professionals.

The songs are extremely well orchestrated and a wide variety of Christian Christmas music is provided. The track "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is breathtaking. I heard this track about 3 years ago and kept searching for the CD until I recently found it on Amazon. I have played it almost continually since I received the album.

The world would be a nicer place if everyone were as grounded, optimistic, and spiritual as former Arrested Development singer-rapper Speech. Whether he's decrying the commodification of music ("Brought to You By . . ."), unnecessary agendas ("The Simple Love of Life"), relationship woes (the eerily Boyz II Men-styled "Livin' in the Real World"), or flaunting his individuality ("It's a Challenge for Me"), Speech uses his aptly titled soul-gospel-pop-infused Spiritual People to soapbox for the greater good. Unfortunately, the Georgia-based musician's points often come off more as self-help prescriptions than declarative statements. And with a few notable exceptions ("Brother Speech," "Y-O," and the thoroughly ill-advised "Jungle Man"), there's not much rap going on. Still, when Speech hits, he hits the mark; the ridiculously upbeat "Cruisin' in My Super Beetle" is a corker even if, like most of the songs here, it's weirdly toothless. --Kim Hughes

This is a GREAT hip-hop album that doesn't use profanity or disrespect women. The beats are tight and the lyrics have a positive message.

Speech is still hungry..........2002-10-23

Speech is still hungry for the knowledge... I currently have Spiritual People in constant rotation in my player. I like how Speech with this LP has done something a bit out of the norm (for him) and has explore some of his other loves...his writing is still profound and uplifting but at the same time shows that he has experienced the ups and downs of fame and enjoys just making the music! And not necessarily the drama associated with being a celebrity.

Smashmouth...?.......2002-10-10

Speech sounds more like smashmouth then the Speech I remember and love...The CD is just plain cheesy and ridiculous...nothing can recapture that raw organic soul of his self titled debut, Hoopla was was i'd say 1/2 good and half cheesy...i used to love playing people speech for the first time...that cd had so much to offer...now i'd frankly be a little embarassed to play most of this CD....while i sound pretty harsh its because i long for that old speech...and while i sound harsh i have to mention songs that are ggreat..."late for my own funeral", "I really love you" "living in the real world" i love... "brotha speech" would be good with out that horrible guest rapper who ruins the songs and doesn't talk about anything(a common theme in ruing speech songs of late)...so i'm writing this in the hopes that the speech sound i know and love will one day return,

How about calling this release "Reverend Moon's Greatest Hits"? Speech's cd is heavy-handed, to be sure, just like the abusive and damaging International Church of Christ that Speech belongs to, who think people in their group are the only true christians, who allow their members to only marry other members in the group, and who call and harrass their members every week if they haven't given their weekly financial "contribution". Arrogant and self-righteous are his lyrics-- and as far away from representing "spiritual people" as are the day-to-day practices of Speech and the International Churches of Christ.

A fresh sound for a new world..........2002-09-15

This latest release by Speech has a depth and diversity that is rare in today's hip-hop marketplace. The vibe is so unique, yet familiar to anyone who has enjoyed his work with Arrested Development. He continues his conscious and positive messages, and weaves these into a rich and varied musical tapestry. The sound is reminiscent of early soul & gospel, yet mixed together in a unique and modern hip-hop funk. This is a cd that can appeal to a diverse audience and get everyone feeling positive!
