5 out of 5 stars Splendid relaxing CD.......2005-01-31

I am not a guitarist, so I cannot really comment knowledgeably on Gerald Garcia's achievement here, but I feel I must add my voice to those who think this is a splendid CD: Naxos have always been good for a surprise, and I was surprised indeed to find them releasing music like this in 1988! The center of the disc, in more than one sense, is Heitor Villa-Lobos, with Garcia playing all five of his Preludes and his Choro No. 1 (which, due to a printing error on the cover, is accredited to Garcia himself as arranger, but that is not correct, he only arranged the following traditional melodies in the style of Savio). Around this center are arranged pieces by Bonfá, Jobim, Savio, Pernambuco, Almeida, Baden-Powell and Machado - all names that I had never heard of until I purchased this disc out of curiosity. The music is relaxing, only the Villa-Lobos is truly classical, and the sound (the recording was made at a studio in Heidelberg, Germany) is excellent, worthy of a full-price disc. To cap it all, there are Gerald Garcia's own notes giving plenty of background information. You can't go wrong here!

3 out of 5 stars Rhythm is way off........2004-02-24

Great music (but not the jobim pieces). ---Like so many classical guitarists he obviously lacks rhythm- particularly on the *Jobim* pieces. if your releasing a cd of music from brazil and you are a classical guitarist from england you should have more understanding of the music. -However it is only seven bucks and there is some definite magic on this cd.~

5 out of 5 stars And the price is right, too........2003-05-24

This is an exquisitely beautiful album that captures the very essence of Brazil.

Of all the solo guitar albums in my collection, this is the most expressive and poignant.

The performance is masterful, intricate and sensitive. There is a wide mastery of inflection and style.

Gerald Garcia is one of the true masters of solo guitar at any level much less Brazilian. (This album was recorded in 1988.)

So treat yourself to the best 72'46" of listening pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Bonfa and Jobim: what a double header!.......2001-06-07

I met the two of them in the past. I saw their shows and I bought their recordings. They never disappointed me, on the contrary: I always was amazed by their style and classy quality of sound. Now they return, together, to make us enjoy life in this way and mode: pleasantness in sound. If this would not suffice, there is a bonus, the performance of Gerald Garcia. Splendiferous! GF

4 out of 5 stars He's pretty good!.......2000-07-04

This is a nice C.D. Fans of the Brasilian Classical guitar style will love it. Purists will probably have a lot of trouble with it. Gerald Garcia is from Canada originally (don't quote me on that though) - it seems there are still strong academic overtones in his playing. However, it's a great collection of Brasilian pieces which spans classical composers to Bossa nova and in between. What I like about this album is the fact that most pieces presented by Garcia are his own arrangements. It's truly a unique recording (which is rare in the classical guitar world). His greatest work is on the smaller, traditional Brasilian pieces. These are really charming rustic melodies which were first harmonized by Isaias Savio and very easy to play. But, Garcia takes them to a higher level - more technically demanding without ever losing the essence of the original works. In fact, with all due respect to Mestre Savio, they are great improvements on the originals.

There is a generous number of tracks here, displaying the wealth of work by a great guitarist. More importantly, the repetoire on the album moves away from the standard Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, Sor collections that so many classical guitarists feel compelled to release. The pieces are probably familiar to most classical guitarists who enjoy playing Brasilian music, but, for those who've never heard or played the works of Almeida, Baden-Powell, Savio or Machado it will be a pleasant surprise. And for people who just like nice music, it will be a fantastic investment.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Energy.......2000-09-17

What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

5 out of 5 stars You'll never know how good they were.......2005-10-04

Earth Wind and Fire are still around. Maurice still sings with the group, Philip is the lead on tour, Verdine is still crazy, and Ralph still brings it together.
This album, released in 2002, reminds longtime fans of how well EWF performed live. This group really knew hot to perform at a level that far exceeded what you heard on vinyl. The best portions of the CD are those when the band is absolutely jamming like in "Getaway" and "Rock That". One of the biggest surprises was the reworking of "Serpentine Fire". At first I didn't dig it, but after the 2nd and 3rd listen, it became my second favorite behind "Getaway." I must say, it was great to hear "September" live, and hear the crowd really respond to it. It's a great song. This is must-buy for a collector, and for a starter, I dont' think you can appreciate it unless you have delved into the catalogue of music (avoid the compliations and get the original albums/cds so you can see how it was all put together. It's something special.). This is clearly the second greatest live album by EWF behind Gratitude.

5 out of 5 stars No Other Band Has This Much Power!.......2005-09-24

The first time I heard this CD, I was immediately hooked! To truly appreciate this show, you've gotta listen to it on a good Digital Audio System. You can feel the joy in this performance. It's so powerful, it moves me emotionally!!! Earth, Wind & Fire's music and The Phenix Horns have always touched my heart. I want to meet Maurice White one day, give him a big hug and thank him personally for sharing his gift of EWF with me and the entire world!!!! My eyes are tearing up already!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BAND EVER, IN THEIR PRIME!!!.......2005-05-13

Earth Wind & Fire Live, and in their prime! This is all an EWF
fanatic like me has to hear! This live concert is PHENOMENAL!
Maurice, Philip, the Pheonix horns, all at the peak, of
perfection! The only thing that could top this, is having this
concert on dvd! Soon I hope! Make yourself very happy, buy this
fantastic EWF live concert, ASAP!

4 out of 5 stars Solid performance with lots of energy..........2005-05-04

This is a recently released EW&F CD that was recorded live in Brazil when they were at their commercial peak in 1980. There is lots of energy here and the band is 16 members strong including The Phenix Horns just before they jumped ship and joined Phil Collins' band. Solid 15 song concert with my two favorite tracks being "Serpentine Fire" and "Fantasy" with Philip Bailey hitting those amazingly high notes.

5 out of 5 stars HELL YEAH!!.......2004-05-24

Great live album!! WOW! This was in 1980 when all the original members were still in the band, Larry Dunn and the great Don Myrick (R.I.P.). When you listen to this album it REALLY makes all the current R&B sound awful. This was time when the music and musicianship mattered the most. Great arrangements of Magic Mind and Runnin'.

There seem to be primarily two types of Calypso currently available in the U.S. There's the huge back catalog of reissues by classic Calypso kings like Atilla the Hun, Roaring Lion, and Lord Kitchener, and an endless stream of cheap, meaningless, and vacuous party music spawned by labels in both the U.S. and Trinidad. But Trinidad Rio and Brigo straddle a small but important group of artists who use new sounds and new grooves to make Calypso that is still relevant, witty, politically sly, and thoroughly Caribbean. These two artists use a contemporary band--electronic keyboards, bass, electric guitar, and drums create a sound sometimes punctuated by horns--to make statements about life and music in Trinidad today. Sex (and sometimes sexism) dominates, both for its own sake and in the service of subtle political comments. But there is also topical broadside aplenty in songs about the foibles of the electric company, the local politicians and radio stations, and the complexities of modern living, all poured out with high sprits and humor in a live recording. Calypso survives, thrives, and defies mass marketing on Raw Kaiso. --Louis Gibson

If you've been to Trinidad during the Carnival season and visited one of the Calypso Tents, then this is definitely a CD for you.

Rio delivers a diverse array of selections, some with subtle sexual innuendos, others with biting political commentary.

Brigo re-emphasizes his unique beauty with 'Mama Popo' and continues belting out his classics with his roaring, yet stylish demeanor till the very end.

The cd is MC'd by none other than the Revue's Dennis "Sprangalang" Hall and backed by the competent (quite at that) Frankie Francis. Michael Goodwin gives a very good introduction with included lyrics and liner notes (for dem who doh understan' d' Trini talk).

THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE TRINIS!

            Album Description

Recorded in Rio, the 4th full length album from hip-hop's nomadic wanderer, Ithaka, is once again testimony to the artist's "live it - write it - rap about it" philosophy. Although produced in Brazil, this album's unique brand of rhyming stories takes place in Mexico, Portugal, South America and the U.S. and revolves around deadly hurricanes, heroin zombies, monster waves, chaotic public transportation, materialism, torturous manual labor, drunk driving, questionable government policies, absent fathers, petty crime, lifetime loves, "middle-class poverty", nostalgia and the graceful wonders of marine life.

The audio part of the project actually began in Los Angeles during January 2003 where Ithaka spent four months pre-creating the album's instrumentals (soundtracks for his lyrical short films) with Reason, a simple to use, entry-level production software. From there, he relocated to Studio Monoaural in Rio de Janeiro, spending another four months recording live instruments and vocals with up-and-coming Brazilian producing talent, Berna Ceppas (who along with Studio Monoaural partner, Kassim, earned a Latin Grammy in 2001 for their production of the Lenine song, "Sonhei").

With the help of an eclectic array of musicians and vocalists from Rio de Janeiro and beyond, Ithaka's songs became sonically branded with a subtle yet distinct Brazilian flavor. Guest players included: rap stars Gabriel O Pensador and Bnegao(Planet Hemp), Thalma de Freitas(singer for Orchestra Imperial and costar of the famous Globo novelas, Colonial and Kubanacan), Liminha (bassist for Os Mutantes), Pepe Cisneros (Cuban transplant to Rio, mega-talented keyboardist and percussionist formerly of Hiphop Havana, now playing for Orchestra Imperial), flute and guitar player Felipe Pinaud (from Seu Jorge's band), Cezar "Bodao" Farias (drummer for Lulu Santos and Fernanda Abreu), Alberto Continentino(bassist for Ed Motta), Negralha (DJ for O Rappa), Claudinho Andrade (keyboardist for Giberto Gil), and Portuguese-Angolan artist/spoken-word poet, M'loa.

Post-production, final mixing and mastering of Recorded in Rio were handled in Los Angeles by Conley Abrams, who Ithaka collaborated with on his acclaimed 2001 release, Somewhere South of Somalia.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deep Thinking, Sexy-Voiced, Funny Man.......2004-12-28

I've been following Mr. Ithaka's career for a long while now (since his heavenly song "Escape from the City of Angels" was in Antone Fuqua's flop, Replacement Killers) and this man's
voice and lyrics just seem to get better with each release...semi-goodlooking too.
