Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. Among the hymns and spirituals are two American choral classics: Randall Thompson's famous and oft-performed "Alleluia" and Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven." --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
The best choir out there.......2004-03-02
The Kansas City Chorale is a SUPERIOR vocal group. I am impressed by its large and wholesome sound that is produced by such a small group. The Alleluia CD is beautiful and also very diverse. "Sing me to Heaven" is gorgeous. The harmonies are beautiful on the page, but are even more beautiful when sung by this ensemble. "Alleluia" is also wonderful, and I was impressed by their interpretation of the many shaker songs and spirituals. This cd is a MUST HAVE for any choral singer or enthusiast.
Gorgeous.......2003-03-24
My choir sang "Alleluia", and used this recording to learn the dynamics. A brilliant performance of that piece. The others are, too, excellent. Good balance, dynamic, and overall sound. But the "Alleluia" really stood out for me.
An Excellent CD.......2002-01-23
My pastor bought me this CD and I wasn't sure I'd really like it. Chorale music? You must be joking. But I popped it into my CD player at home and was immediately astonished at what I heard. The Kansas City Chorale have done an outstanding job of singing hymns of various types, most without musical accompaniment. Track 7 ("Encouragement") is my absolute favorite song on this CD. It is so beautiful to hear, especially when I crank it on my big stereo or over my headphones.
Bottom line: if you like chorale music, religious music, or even classical music, you will really enjoy this CD. The quality of the recording is very good.
A moving survey of American hymns.......2002-01-02
This is an excellent, deeply musical performance of a wide variety of hymns, Shaker tunes, and spirituals. The choices provide variety and a thumbnail sketch of a time in America when hymn-singing was a part of every week's activities. I agree with another reviewer that "Precious Lord" is a highlight. Also noteworthy is "Give Me Jesus" at the end. Both the singing and acoustics of the recording are top notch. I have already played this CD many times since receiving it two days ago. I'm ordering copies for friends! Among my many choral CDs, this one stands out as a favorite.
a listener from North Kansas CIty.......2001-06-27
What a excellent CD! I got this for Christmas after going to a couple of their concerts and it sounds just as good as it did live. If you like chorale music then this is the cd for you. I personally know a man that sings in this group and is very talented singer along with the rest!

Are You Bound For Heaven or Hell?
Reverend J. M. Gates
Columbia/Legacy Records CK-65710
Legacyrecordings.com
"A horse will buck you, a cow will hook you, a mule will kick you, and the Devil's in the flying machine." Eternal, spiritual observations such as this permeate the 19 mini-sermons collected here by Columbia. Rev. J.M. Gates was the most popular, successful and prolific of all recorded preachers. His 1945 funeral was the largest black funeral in Atlanta until the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Anachronistically humorous on the surface, this CD is actually a deep, honest look inside Southern African-American culture in the second quarter of the 20th century. To be a successful preacher, one must address the daily concerns of one's parishioners and identify the evils and errors that afflict them. Well, here are those concerns, evils and errors in the guise of Satan, with Rev. Gates rolling up his sleeves and wrestling him down. A beautiful, thorough timepiece, the record includes "Things That You Can Move Don't Ask God to Move," "The Woman and the Snake," "Pay Your Policy Man," "Kinky Hair is No Disgrace," "Saturday Night Black Mariah Riders," "Meeting the Judge on a Sunday Morning" and "Did You Spend Christmas Day in Jail?"
That ol' time religion.......2004-05-29
The Rev. James M. Gates' (1884-1945) sermons are an absolute HOOT! Basically, he was doing an African-American version of the sort of thing Billy Sunday was doing at the time. Apparently aimed at a rural, fundamentalist audience (Rev. Gates preached at a church in Atlanta), these are old fashioned rip-roaring countrified hellfire and brimstone tirades against "You pocket pickers, you midnight ramblers, you whiskey drinkers, you mother heart-breakers, on the hell bound express." Hoo boy! For the most part, unless you subscribe to this kind of religion, you will find this more entertaining than inspiring, especially ones like "Mannish Women" (Some women are walking like men, and some men are walking just like the women!).
Rev. Gates seems to be earnest through most of the proceedings, but some of this was clearly intended to be comical, such as "Kinky Hair is No Disgrance", where our man gets into a dialogie with the sisters in the congregation about race pride, and "Scat to the Cat and Sooey to the Hog," some outrageously counttrified advice on marital bliss with even wilder responses from the congregation (this last one was banned in 1931, listen and see why).
Lots of fun here. Rev. C.L. Franklin (Aretha's Dad) was greatly influenced by Rev. Gates' "Dead Cat on the Line" (not included here) and one would suspect that T.D. Jakes may have given Rev. Gates a listen or two. Only problem is that while these selections make for great listening, as Rev. Gates usues a lot of imaginative imagery as well as well as (sometimes unintentional) humor, a lot of other fascinting sermons of his such as "Is a Rope on Your Neck," "Dead Cat on the Line," "FDR Is Everbody's Friend," "You Negro Haters" "Joe Louis," etc. are not included here. Those sermons are on other CD's though, so this is a VERY good start.

AMAZING !.......2000-06-05
This song is one of the best written AND performed songs that I have heard in this genre in many years. Shana is and should be on the same level as artists like Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Jo Dee Messina. Just one question... WHERE IS THE ALBUM ? C'mon Music industry! Give the people what they want !
Eagerly awaiting more.......1999-12-29
Shana's latest single, "This Time", is excellent. I've seen the video a few times, and she really does a beautiful job. The song is simple and she backs it up with her angelic voice. I can't wait for the full length CD. Love ya Shana, keep em coming.
Heaven Bound.......1999-12-27
Shana Petrone has a nice refreshing voice. I just don't understand why an singer with three videos out still doesn't have her first album released. I have seen the video for This Time, Heaven Bound, and Something Real on CMT. She has been a featured new artist for the last month. She truly does have an amazing voice and style.
Major Disappointment.......1999-11-04
The main reason that I bought this single was for the wonderful song "Something Real". I was very disappointed and upset when I played it and found out that all you get on this single is a brief SNIPPET of "Something Real" and "What Did You Think I'd Do". This sort of deceptive marketing should be illegal.
see below.......1999-07-27
I first saw Shana a little over a year ago and she only had the one hit then, coming out at the same time as Dani Leigh. I saw her again on Crook and Chase and not only is she beautiful and has a fantastic voice, she posesses an extraordinary energy and charisma few people can carry with poise and charm. I ahve been looking for the full CD and have been unsuccessful for a year now. When is it finally due?
