Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Coolest of all are two tracks at cross purposes-- "Chelsea Rodgers" fuses funk with disco until it's so far off the hook it's in a heap on the floor, and "All the Midnights in the World" paints a picture of artistic maturity through piano and lyrics that lean hard on positivity. There's an elegance to it that Prince fans, no strangers to pop music that's truly sublime, won't fail to appreciate. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Simply put, Planet Earth is the album longtime Prince fans have been waiting for. Several cuts on this album revisit some of the classic Prince sound the captured fans all over the world and helped deem him an incomparable music icon. Superstar and legendary musician prince kicked off 2007 with a show stopping Super Bowls Half-time performance. Prince pulled out all the stops during the second most-watched super bowl broadcast ever. With an estimated 93.2 million viewers to entertain, Prince wasted no time showing off his stages powers and irrefutable guitar skills. He masterfully captured the attention and respect of music fans in general, while sending a message to long time Prince fans that he was ready to once again reign supreme.

5 out of 5 stars PRINCE - A RETURN 2 FUNKY-POP!.......2007-08-06

After a considerable dive to the bottom of incoherent babble and nonsense noise, that was suppose to be music (example "The Rainbow Children"). Prince has dusted his guitar off and finally written some understandable funky pop tunes that are actually fun and even listenable! Take note- I have been a HUGE Prince fan from the very beginning, however, Prince lost me (and a lot of other fans) with his constant personal battles with Warner Bros and himself! Now, with the exception of (in my opinion) TOO MANY love ballards, Prince hits the mark with two songs that are worth the $10.00 admission to play- "The One U Wanna C" with a '60's surf guitar rift that is SO catchy and a tune that the listener wants to hear again and again! The lyrics are cool and the rythmn stays with you, way after the song ends!

The funkiest song on the CD is the gospel-pop "Chelsea Rodgers," which reminds this Prince fan of his "Controversy" days, and even a bit of his teaming with Sheila E on "A Love Bazaar" and "Erotic City," with a lot of catchy lyrics and funky music. The remainder of the CD is mostly what many of us die-hard Prince fans have been avoiding- enviromental "peace" songs and "overwhelming" ballards. Though, "Mr Goodnight" is the best of the love ballards, the number of them overloads the CD and almost sinks it. Prince is at least finally headed in the right deirection, let's just hope he doesn't start straying again- we'll all still waiting for another "Purple Rain," "1999," or a VERY rare "Sign O' The Times," in other words, we're still waiting "to live to see the dawn."

5 out of 5 stars Very Prince.......2007-08-06

This is classic Prince. The music, guitar, and vocals are very much the 1970s/1980s Prince. I love Somewhere Here on Earth. Good job Prince.

5 out of 5 stars Prince is back!.......2007-08-05

Prince returns with his latest album "Planet Earth." Wow is this album amazing or what? I've been a Prince fan since the hit "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World." I love that song! I also heard his 80's music and fell in love with it as well. When I found out Prince was releasing new material, I wondered if it would be as good as his older stuff. Well I was right, it was as good as his older stuff and then some! The lead single "Guitar" is classic Prince. Iti's original and unique just like him. I'm a fan of various music styles and I was pleasently surprised with Prince's latest release. itunes classified it as R&B but I think it's a combination of styles. I didn't get "3121" or "Musicology" (the title track rocks!) but now I want to after hearing "Planet Earth." Definately the most original work of 2007 so far. I highily reccomend you buying this if you love Prince. You won't be dissapoined at all!

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 STARS!!.......2007-08-05

The first time I listened, there were only a couple of cuts I wanted to hear again. But, after listening a couple more times, I can't seem to get enough of the whole album... it's catchy, funky, addicting, it makes me happy! :) Prince is the best, there's just no way to ignore this man's music. He's pure genious!

5 out of 5 stars And I thought "3121" was good!.......2007-08-05

Prince returns with another strong conglomeration of R & B funk and soul, coupled with some straight out rocking jams that only the Minneapolis native can compose.

Though some may feel that he has lost some of his genius, especially since his conversion to the Jehovah Witness faith, I find the tracks on this album to rank with some of his best of the 70's and 80's.

The best include the thought-provoking title cut, the playful "Guitar," the Smokey Robinson-sounding "Somewhere Here on Earth," the enigmatic "Future Baby Mama," the sexually-suggestive "Mr. Goodnight," and "Chelsea Rodgers," a really hard-hitting dance cut that pulls no punches.

The disc should lose a star for not including the lyrics, somewhat necessary to analyze the words without the music.

But, I can't do that to "THE PURPLE ONE!"

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

5 out of 5 stars Beasties are Back.......2007-08-04

Off the charts outstanding! The Boys have mastered their instrumental stylings, and have created an amazing cornicopia of sound. Far more advanced than earlier instrumentals that were wooven through out various albums, or collected on 'In sounds from way out'. If you dig this side of the Beasties, you need not dig any further!

5 out of 5 stars the beastie boys have done it again.......2007-07-30

a lot of people are basing this album on from their prevous popular albums like check your head, hello nasty (my favorite), 5 boroughs, ect. but there are a lot of ignorant people out there and dont realize that they have already made an album with just instruments called the in sound from the way out. and it was excellent and so was this album. put it on and just sit back and chill to it. the beastie boys do a great job mixing it up, which is one of the reasons why i love the beastie boys and one of the reasons why they are my all time favorite! its all about the music, a good band can make music with lyrics but a great group can produce music without lyrics. this album has been everything i have asked for, if you loved anything from the beastie boys, im sure you will love this. i know i did!

2 out of 5 stars Skip it.......2007-07-30

I would say if you are new to the band you might find this appealing. For me it was not the same as past musical experiences I had in listening to albums of the past, including several that came after the famous "Licensed to Ill" which I have heard is one of Capitol Records all-time best selling albums. This CD left me frustrated as I did not feel there was very much creativity at all. As they say; "to each his own" but I personally felt this CD was a letdown.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2007-07-28

Picked this up, was so excited, first song...all insturmental...i was like ya cool, i dig, then next song...no lyrics, all the way through the 12 tracks. very dissapointed, sure the mysic is good, but thats not what makes the beastie boys the beastie boys. if you are eager to listen then give the sample on amazon a quick listen, chances are that is all you will need

4 out of 5 stars Chill Background.......2007-07-27

The Beasties are always giving the people what they want. They may not know they want it but after you get it, you realize you needed it. This is one of those records. It's not anything ground-breaking but it is just what you'd expect form an all instrumental (that's right, no lyrics) record from them. This record is great to chill to or have on the background of any get-together. It takes you right back to the instrumental songs of Check Your Head and Ill Communication records but is totally all brand new music. Nothing here appears on their The In Sound From The Way Out Album but it is similar in it's construction. I enjoyed The Mix-Up and I hope you do too.

As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

The Staple Singers: Greatest Hits

Album Description

From the liner notes, by John Lewis:

When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.

Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.

The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.

It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.

Rep. John Lewis

4 out of 5 stars We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05

I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.

5 out of 5 stars Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28

This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!

3 out of 5 stars quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27

This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.

3 out of 5 stars Yes and no.......2007-06-27

A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.

5 out of 5 stars Passion and soul.......2007-06-26

Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison

One of my favorite Beatles albums. I've had it on vinyl since it came out many years ago and have all of the Beatles compilations on CD, but I wanted to have this whole album on CD, too. Finally got around to it and after I played it once, I was reminded what a great album this is!

5 out of 5 stars Fusion Album.......2007-07-18

At an abundant time of musical creativity, George Martin keeps released material progressing at a pace that connects us with some familiarities found in their earlier music and yet must begin to open the door for us to witness the musical revolution he saw emerging shortly, and still managed well having the support of the four.

In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As good as Joss Stone's previous efforts are, Introducing Joss Stone represents a giant step forward: there's a freshness to these songs that suits her age (19 as of the album's release) and a funkiness that suits modern pop sensibilities. There's also a cross-hatching of visions with artists like Lauryn Hill and Common that will rightly advance her reputation as an artist who can sling disco, R&B, and rock almost as convincingly as soul. Splicing girl-group harmonies with blaxploitation-style funk with Joplin-esque and, at times, Shelby Lynne-reminiscent vocals, Stone works these Raphael Saadiq-produced beats with the stealth and steadiness of a '70s-era legend who's still going strong. "Girl They Won't Believe It," she wails against the tight hoo-hoo harmonizing of talented backup singers on the opening track; get a load of how much she's accomplished in the space of three albums, and you won't believe it, either. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Bruised But Not Broken.......2007-08-01

My aunt used to talk about Joss Stone all the time but I never knew who she was. Even after hearing "What We Gonna Do Now", I still never really knew who she was. It was not until I was listening to the song "Bruised But Not Broken" on a cable music station that I fell in love with her music. I decided to adopt this phrase as my mantra and ask all my friends to get her CD.

Now honestly, there are a a couple of songs that are over the top, but overall I was pleased. And I like Raphael Saadiq also so I was excited about the purchase. This the kind of CD that the more you listen to it, the more you like.

4 out of 5 stars ongoing developing talent.......2007-07-28

Some great stuff in here, and I really do enjoy JS's voice. Listening to this CD gave me this urge to go research older Stevie Wonder for some reason...I suspect that's a good sign. For some reason, though, I like her previous effort more. It's going to be interesting to continue to watch this still-young artist continue to develop.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money...........2007-07-25

If you're looking for a great follow up to her first CD, you'd be hard pressed to find it here. "Introducing Joss Stone" sounds nothing like her first album, all of the songs are R&B based (not the jazz/blues/soul music of the first) and most of the lyrics I couldn't understand. I would think twice in purchasing this if you really liked the first album and are expecting something similar.

I love Joss Stone's voice. There's no denying it, the girl's got a set of pipes that are un-matched in this current generation of musicians, but I'm not sure Joss has found her groove yet.

Admittedly, at 14 she was too young to make the important decisions to launch her career, but this girl's been through more changes than the weather.

I think when she really hits her groove, folks will stop comparing her to Shelby Lynne, etc. It'll happen, but 19 may still be too young.

You want to hear a great Brit chick with more heart and identity, you need to listen to "Put your Records On" by Corrine Bailey Rae. Corrine doesn't have Joss' voice, but she's got down who she is.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

5 out of 5 stars So good only Van could have picked the songs.......2007-07-31

You either love or hate Van the Man. Over 40 years he has given the world some of the most heartfelt beautiful music ever recorded. This best of provides a stunning glimpse into the breath and depth of what he is capable of delivering. Showing respect to those who came before him, this collection is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. In the hands of the recording company this offering could have been a diaster. Thanks Van for giving us your gems for this collection.

5 out of 5 stars great new album.......2007-07-24

I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-07-23

This is a 2 disc CD with lots of great songs. I really like the mix of songs and definitely recommend this to Van Morrison fans.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection.......2007-07-12

I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars One Word...Amazing!.......2007-08-04

Elliott Yamin is the best kept secret! I loved him on American Idol and always thought he had the most amazing range of vocals and should have won! I'm delighted his CD is out and every song is better than the next. This is a perfect combination of soul, funk, jazz and easy listening. His songs give me goose bumps and bring me to tears.
I particularly love the song - "One Word"!

5 out of 5 stars Takes my breath away.......2007-08-03

Elliott Yamin was my favorite on season five of "American Idol," which was filled with talented singers. I purchased his debut CD the day it was released. However, I wanted to listen for awhile before writing a review. I definitely liked it when it was first released, but "Elliott Yamin" is a relatively subtle CD that takes a few listens to fully appreciate. The CD tends toward up-tempo ballads and love songs, which is really what Elliott excels as singing. Overall, I think he did a great job at selecting songs that suit his voice and also blend into a cohesive CD.

The first single ("Wait for You") is particularly beautiful and has become a solid hit. The song had a slow start before eventually making it into the top 20 of Billboard's Hot 100. I also enjoy "I'm the Man," which features an atmospheric intro and incredibly catchy chorus. "Free" has somewhat clichéd lyrics, but Elliott's vocals blend with a beautiful piano backing for a real highlight. My final favorite song is "Train Wreck," which is a somewhat bluesy ballad with one of Elliott's most soulful vocals. Elliott also co-wrote "Trainwreck," along with "Movin' On," "Find a Way," "You Are the One," and "Alright." The CD ends with the only remake; of course it had to be Donnie Hathaway's "A Song for You," which was one of the highlights of Elliott's "American Idol" stint.

All in all, Elliott has released a very good debut CD that has obviously pleased most of his fans. I'm enjoying it more than four months after its release. Some listeners might find the focus on ballads a bit tiring, but do yourself a favor and listen to the CD for awhile before judging it.

3 out of 5 stars Not up to hopes.......2007-08-02

I was realy excited to get this cd, as I felt Elliott should have won American Idol. However, I don't think the songs were well chosen to showcase his talent and many of the songs arrangements overshadowed his dynamic vocal capabilities. I have listened to it twice and not been tempted to listen again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Talent........2007-08-02

When I first heard him sing, I knew that he would win American Idol. But he didn't have the so-call look. Each song can hold it's on against some of the music out there now. I hope that his cd doesn't get lost like I've seen so many do. I pray that on his second cd that he works with stronger producers. Give this cd a try and you'll see what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive debut!.......2007-07-30

I admit it, I watch the show. I've watched it from about mid-way season 1. This is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. Elliott's voice and genuine feeling captured me, no question. I don't care about his mother (sorry), I don't care about his diabetes, or his deafness (again, sorry--I know other people care about this kind of stuff, but I don't). He has a voice that fills me up!! I don't know a more eloquent way to say it, and for that, I apologize. But, his voice makes me joyous!

Some of the songs on this CD felt a little lacking at first, but just let Elliott overwhelm you with his feeling--and believe me he will. He takes these songs--some of them average, some impressive--he takes them to a different level. He's shown it here, give him better songs, and he will hit them outta the field! Honestly, I can't wait to see what he does next.

If Hollywood's marriage with pop music is too often a marketing-driven shotgun affair, there remain musicians whose artistry can't help but elevate whatever film project they're associated with. This 19-track compendium underscores that notion, gathering a career-spanning collection of the Irish rock-R&B legend's contributions to an eclectic body of films that stretches from Pope of Greenwich Village's effusive early solo hit "Jackie Wilson Said" to the unlikely live collaboration with Roger Waters on "Comfortably Numb" that seasons Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated The Departed. The collection serves as a concise primer to the high points of Van Morrison's mercurial career, from the gritty career-breakout hits ("Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go") of his British Invasion band Them through such early solo touchstones as "Wild Night," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and the collection's fine, previously unreleased live version of "Moondance" from An American Werewolf in London. But, as tracks like "Wonderful Remark," "Bright Side of the Road," "Someone Like You," and his Chieftains collaboration "Irish Heartbeat" ably argue, it's also an invitation to explore less heralded, if equally seductive, corners of the singer's rich oeuvre. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2007-07-23

I am a huge Van Morrison fan, and really like most the songs on this CD, but they are not my favorite version of the songs. A lot of the songs are live, and I expected the studio versions.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD...Van's The Man.......2007-07-19

This is a great CD if you like Van Morrison...Kind of like a greatest hits album really from the various stages of Van's Career....Did not realize how many different movie soundtracks Van has appeared on..My only issue was that the studio version of Into The Mystic is not on here..they used the live version which does not have the same impact on you...still a recommended CD

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collection.......2007-07-13

Just got this in and it's a great collection. It pulls together some very famous Van performances (like Caravan from the Last Waltz) and mixes it up with his best studio efforts. It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Van the Man at the Movies.......2007-07-10

As Michael Heatley notes in the excellent accompanying booklet, when Van came in at The Last Waltz, it kicked that last concert of The Band up a notch, and the ensuing energy never came back down. He has that effect and, I think, in general, helped the films his music accompanied, rather than the other way around. This compilation ranges from "Gloria" with Van's early band, Them, to a duet with Roger Waters on Pink Floyd's The Wall of "Comfortably Numb". The question is, however, how well does it hold up for general airtime in the CD player?

Quite well. If you already have The Best of Van Vols one and two CDs, you already have most of the best songs this disc leaves off. Heatley makes the choice of soundtrack songs for the films seem so much a matter of director's decision, that rather than lionizing them for what they did include, you wonder why they left off your favorites. Where's "Full Force Gale"? "When Will I Ever Learn (to Live in God)"? "And It Stoned Me"? One could go on and on. Change of tactic, therefore, to celebrate what is included rather than decry what is not.

This disc ranges over what might be considered the various Van periods, which are distinctive musically. Hungry For Your Love" comes from what Heatley calls the "often overlooked" Wavelength album, which hails from the era of horns and gospel vocal back-ups. Astral Weeks, yes, but I think Wavelength is one of Van's best albums ever. Some songs exist in alt/ live versions here, to good effect, as with the best known classics, "Domino", "Caravan". "Moondance" and "Into the Mystic". The studio versions are easily available but most fans will enjoy hearing the new takes. Van handles them confidently, and drops into his effortless live groove, slurring the words of "Into the Mystic" which, like these other songs, can survive any number of interpretations. "Bright Side of the Road" comes from another Wavelength era overlooked album, Into the Music, which unveiled the amazing "Full Force Gale", the latter conspicuous by its absence. '90s Van appears with the standout "Real Real Gone" and "Days Like These". Two songs will already be familiar to non- van fans, having been hits for John Cougar Mellencamp and Rod Stewart.

As I write, Van still hasn't gotten the Nobel Prize, although he's done more to bring enjoyment and harmony than almost anyone on the planet, with the possible exception of Mother Teresa, who already did get it, so it's Van's turn. But until that oversight is addressed, at least there's this compilation which shows he's not only raised the bar for music but also significantly improved the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome album.......2007-07-03

A great Van Morrison album for someone who really loves Van Morrison and his legendary sound. It's in my CD player all the time.

Back to Basics, Christina Aguilera's first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the--let's call it "sexy"--aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single "Ain't No Other Man," for one, and the hushed stunner "Save Me from Myself" for another. That doesn't mean she's foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you'll reach a playful and familiar raunch; "Candyman" celebrates a "one-stop shop" who "makes the panties drop" to a boogie-woogie beat, and "Nasty Naughty Boy" sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to "sip on my champagne/Cause I'm gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist." Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina's undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they'll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number "I Got Trouble" and "Mercy on Me," an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of "Back in the Day," the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of "Still Dirrty"). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera's baby--she executive-produced, and she's found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to "Ain't No Other Man," written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: "You got soul, you got class/You got style, you're bada--." --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2007-08-05

I am not a big fan of the pop princess sounds, such as Britney, Jessica or even Avril, and thus I do not particularly care for most of Christina's work. I will however say that Christina unlike the others has a very remarkable voice and I really enjoyed this album.

4 out of 5 stars Still Growing As An Artist.......2007-07-17

Honestly, I have only listened to 2/3 of the double album set, but I have enjoyed every minute of what I have heard. Christina is a little dynamo and she brings it full force. It is ashamed that so many of the tracks on this album will be lost in the over play of Candyman and Ain't No Other Man on the radio. If you like pop music, this is a great addition to the 2006/2007 year's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Back to Basics.......2007-07-11

Great CD. Love most of the songs. Some are OK, and real different.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected pleasure.......2007-07-05

I never thought I'd like any of these bubble-gum-pop stars, but I found myself really enjoying the songs on this CD. And I was pleasantly surprised by Aguilera's voice -- much better than the rest of the mouseketeer pack.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greastest singers of all time.......2007-06-14

This album is fantastic. She is truley and talented musician and really sets herself apart form all of the rest. Keep on doing what your doing!

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

An excellent Hendrix compilation. All of the famous stuff still played on the radio is on here, as well as lesser-knowns. Definitely get this if a Hendrix fan. 20 tracks, over an hour of music. Great value.

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal........2007-06-17

I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!
