Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David Stubbs

What can I say?.......2007-08-01
Some songs I realy liked and some I did'nt. I re-lived some of the good things in my past.
a true classic.......2007-07-30
Jimi Hendrix wasn't just a very good guitar player. Sometimes he was also very good at just writing catchy, memorable songs with a touch of blues and a heavy emphasis on vocal melodies. Axis: Bold as Love proves that. While the dazzling display of guitar work Hendrix was famous for is still noticeable throughout the album, mostly this is an album that catches your attention by way of pretty vocals, short rockers, and some dreamy aspects. Guitar jam lovers might have mixed feelings with it, but I'm sure everyone can find some songs to like on this classic album.
Arguably his best work........2007-07-24
Amazing how well this album holds up. If anything it seems more creative and masterful forty years after it was released. When it first came out, this album astonished young and old guitar players alike. We could not comprehend how Hendrix was making the sounds he so effortlessly created. In the USA we did not yet know about the sound of an overdriven Marshall amp and a Univibe effect pedal. It is ironic that Jimi, a professional R&B player with serious chops and road experience, had to go to London to be appreciated as a soloist. On this album he is confident, explorative, poetic and emotionally expressive. The dissipation and excess that mars some tracks on Electric Ladyland had not yet set in. Pure artistry and genius. Mitch Mitchells drum work reminds me of Keith Moon at his best. It is a shame he never worked with the Who after Moon passed. The engineering by Eddie Kramer is masterful and captures both the delicacy and drive of this trio. I suggest you skip over bass player Noel Reddings middling compositon "Shes so Fine". It detracts from the work.
Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04
I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.
Classic Hendrix.......2007-05-29
This is a must for any Hendrix fan. This is in my top 20 albums of all time. Buy it NOW!

Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line. --Steve Stolder
Customer Reviews:
LAYLA: A PASSIONATE MONUMENT TO UNREQUITED LOVE (and a blues-rock guitar masterpiece).......2007-07-31
Of course, just about every serious rock music fan knows the story of Eric Clapton falling head-over-heels-in-love with his friend George Harrison's wife, and creating a testimonial plea to her, in the form of the blues-rock double album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. Eric had taken the name, Layla, from a character in the poem, Leyla And Mejnun, written by the Persian poet, Nizami. In the poem, Mejnun goes insane, over the fact that Leyla's parents would not allow her to see him. That poem is where the fiction ends on this album. The passion, pain, and intense longing in these songs is as real as the day you were born. Clapton's singing voice is pure emotion as he cries out in painful and passionate longing. Keyboardist Bobby Whitlock's backing vocals complement Eric perfectly. Guitar great (and according to Whitlock, Eric's kindred spirit) Duane Allman came in to play on one or two songs, but fortunately (for us) ended up playing on the rest of the album, making this the blues-rock guitar masterpiece that it is. From the emotional pleading of Bell Bottom Blues and the frantic sorrow of Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad, to the pure, unadulterated blues of Nobody Loves You When You're Down And Out, and Have You Ever Loved A Woman, the two guitarist spur each other on to heights of guitar magnificance, that still stands among both legendary axemen's greatest works. Guitar greatness is everywhere on this album, from Allman's slide guitar magic on Anyday to Eric's blistering lead on the extended jam, Tell The Truth. They do a great rocking version of the Hendrix song, Little Wing, as a tribute to Jimi, and then go unplugged and acoustic on I Am Yours. The song, Layla, is a masterpiece itself, and one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music. From Clapton's impassioned vocals and Allman's fiery slide guitar solo to the sad beauty of Duane and Eric's twin slide guitars during the piano coda at the end of the song, Layla reaches heights of passion unparalleled in modern music. Without question, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs is a masterpiece, a sonic Van Gogh, a landmark in rock music, and a monument to the saddest of all love, unrequited love.
25 years, 1000+ CD's, and this is my favorite ..........2007-05-25
I bought this LP's, as an angst ridden, teenage girl. I'm now very settled and happy but I continue to love music. I have over 1000 CD's (that are ripped of course) in the blues/rock/alternative genre and actively seek out new artists to add to my collection every year.
It occured to me recently, that out of all the music I own, this is my favorite. I have listened to it countless times, yet it still moves me. So many other reviews have detailed what's so great about this music, that I won't repeat, but somthing magic happened during these sessions.
The studio was on fire........2007-05-08
Duane Allman was the fuel that powered these sessions and the slide playing on this session is as powerful now as when it was recorded. A fantastic collection played with the raw fire that ignited when Clapton and Allman tore into these songs. You can see Eric Clapton playing a number of these songs in 2007 with Derrick Trucks playing the slide parts which is excellent, but Duane had a soulfulness in his playing here that is timeless. A great CD.
The greatest album ever recorded.......2007-03-02
Remember vinyl? Back when records were put out on vinyl I used to say that vinyl had never been put to better use than making this album. It is the greatest album ever made by anyone at any time. I'm not even a big Clapton fan, I don't care about "Guitar Gods" or endless solos or any of that crap. Every song here is heartfelt, anguished and played by musicians who sound like they're on the ledge and could fall at any second. But they don't fall, they hang together and no one ever played better.
Everything builds to the end of the title cut where Clapton invokes Robert Johnson, "Please don't say we'll never find a way, And tell me all my love's in vain." Then the piano coda, and the quietly resigned "Thorn Tree." Perfect, never matched, never surpassed.
EC & Skydog in the Miami Heat.......2007-02-19
The best and sincere white blues there is, Erics masterpiece, this and Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac is the real deal. "Skydog" Duane Allman plays his heart out here also. One note about the guitar(s) sound on this album. This album was recorded using 5 watt Fender Champ tube amps from the 50's, that is why the GTRS sound big, small amps = big sound in the studio.

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17
This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.
Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04
This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.
The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07
The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.
Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12
I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.
Great Selections.......2007-03-31
This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward Garabedian
Customer Reviews:
Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04
This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.
Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17
I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.
Too much opera.......2007-01-10
If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.
Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15
So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.
That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.
Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.
To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.
Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)
So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.
TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10
This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

something to have.......2007-03-14
These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.
Excellent Music.......2007-02-19
This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!
buy now.......2006-09-01
Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.
Lovely.......2006-02-22
This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.
Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14
I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.
As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!
I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Love listening to the love songs!.......2006-01-11
This is probably my favorite Phil Collins album. Most of the songs here are easy-going and calm to listen to. Perfect for listening to on a long trip. Listening to it on a short trip wouldn't hurt either. Or just letting the music put you to sleep at night is good to do, too.

After several years at the top of the rock world, Springsteen pulled back the reins on Tunnel of Love--a lot, not just a little. Members of the E Street Band played on the album but seldom in full-band arrangements. Then, too, there are the deeply conflicted songs--"Brilliant Disguise," "Two Faces," "Tunnel of Love," "One Step Up"--that may have been written in response to the imminent failure of his first marriage. There's more to the album than divorce-court play-by-play, however. There's also the raw rocker "Spare Parts," the sprightly "All That Heaven Will Allow," and the bold declaration "Tougher Than the Rest." Overall, these are some of his most thoughtful songs and most intimate performances. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Very introspective but very memorable........2007-05-24
After all the hoopla over BORN IN THE USA, Bruce came out with the most opposite album possible in terms of lyrical content and mood and of course it did not sell as well as its predecessor. The title of the album would make you think of romance, dating and being in love but the album is more about love lost, insecurity and lonliness.
Ironically BORN IN THE USA sounds dated today especially for Europeans like myself. It is a very American album but seemd more focused on America in the Eighties. TUNNEL OF LOVE dealt with more universal heartfelt issues that eveyone who has been in a relationship can easily relate to and that is its strength. It is very introspective and most songs are similar in mood apart from one or two (SPARE PARTS and TUNNEL OF LOVE). But it is a very honest album and very brave.
Springsteen had swung back and forth in mood on previous albums with darker albums like NEBRASKA and THE RIVER showing a subdued side as opposed to BORN TO RUN, GREETINGS FROM ASBURY PARK and BORN IN THE USA being more pop rock orientated.
Standouts are near the end of the album. VALENTINE'S DAY, ONE STEP UP, TUNNEL OF LOVE and BRILLIANT DISGUISE are some of his greatest compositions with hard hitting lyrics especially ONE STEP UP, my favourite song on the album. Apart from WHEN YOU'RE ALONE, all the other songs are very effective. This album shows Bruce Springsteen at his most hard hitting. Listen to CAUTIOUS MAN and VALENTINE'S DAY. Here is Bruce Springsteen, the epitome of the blue collar working man of America dealing with very masculine issues in a very vulnerable way. Men do not talk about this stuff!! So that is why I admire him so much more. I love BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, ROSALITA, BORN TO RUN and all the rock stuff he has done before this album. But this is a much braver collection of songs and he did not shy away from dealing with these issues in a very public way.
Track times are listed below:
1. Ain't got you 2.06
2. Tougher than the rest 4.34
3. All that heaven will allow 2.38
4. Spare parts 3.39
5. Cautious man 3.56
6. Walk like a man 3.38
7. Tunnel of love 5.10
8. Two faces 3.01
9. Brilliant disguise 4.15
10. One step up 4.21
11. When you're alone 3.21
12. Valentine's day 5.10
Tunnel Of Love.......2007-05-05
Bruce Springsteen-Tunnel Of Love ***
Now supposedly this is by Bruce Springsteen and The E. Street Band but since almost half of the band does not play a single note on the entire album this is really just a Bruce Springsteen album with a little help from some friends. Released after the massive success of the classic Born In The U.S.A. this album was destined to be judged, this is like Goats Head Soup for The Rolling Stones, it came out after Exile On Main Street so no matter how good it is people will compare it to the album before.
Tunnel Of Love is not a bad album, but at the same time Tunnel Of Love is not a great album. It is just average, and Bruce Springsteen should never make a average album because his talents are anything but average. Had Clarance played sax on this album maybe it would be better but he is not on here once. The same can be said for almost the entire E. Street Band.
The lyrics are personal and maybe the most personal of Springsteens career but in a lot of places they seem almost cheesey and that is just not Bruce. In other places they are so amazing and brilliant like 'Brilliant Disguise' which is a Springsteen classic, and the title track 'Tunnel Of Love' is a great track song lyricly. 'Tougher Then The Rest' is one of Bruces more personel and best songs ever lyricly and musicly. There are some more bright moments here and there but not too much.
Tunnel Of Love plays like sports comentary of a Chicago Bulls chapionship game except for the imminent divorce of Springsteens first marriage. Overall this is not a bad album, for the good songs it is worth it, the average songs not so much. Maybe had the production been better so would this album. For a true Bruce fan this is worth owning.
WTF happened?.......2007-02-08
After the brilliant Born in the USA, this is all Bruce could offer. Interesting... anyway, the whole damn thing is smothered in '80's production, which is one count against it. The lyrics, which were supposed to be personal but turned out weak, are another. To make things even worse, Clarence Clemon's doesn't play a NOTE on this recording. The silver lining is Brilliant Disguise, which is indeed brilliant, plus he cooks up a nice extended metaphor on the title track. Even then, the tune itself is thin. This is easily Bruce's weakest - I'd go with Born to Run, Born in the USA, The River, Darkness at the Edge of Town or The Wild etc. instead - hell, even mediocre stuff like the debut and Lucky Town are better.
DESERVES MUCH MORE THAN FIVE STARS.......2007-01-21
TUNNEL OF LOVE IS ONE OF THE FINEST ALBUMS FROM THE BOSS AND AMONGST HIS BEST AFTER BORN IN THE USA.RECOMMENDED TO PEOPLE WITH A GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC.
PS:IGNORE THE PREVIOUS ONE STAR REVIEWER.HE HAS A BAD TASTE IN MUSIC
Gimme a break!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-20
Just was listening to Bruce Springsteen in my car stereo and then realized how crappy his voice is and the way his songs were.I think he screams and he sounds more like a duck. I was a fan to him for several years and still cant remember then either. my dad loves bruce and he buys his albums while he only likes all these pop singers such as Sheryl crow, bob seger, Bruce springsteen and the crappy Rolling stones. All four of them are overrated and pretty much suck. Why cant he like Metallica who were miles better and heavier except their debut sucked. I just kinda wish that Bob Seger, Rolling stones, Sheryl Crow, and Bruce springsteen would all fade out as they are all just for adults. I am still a kid and I like what i listen to.Gimme one break from this guy.I could only remember 1 song he did good that could have been title Tunnel Of Love which I think even Dire Straits made a different song titled that but earlier and I like them better. Take my advice, go with Metallica(Ride The Lightning till Load), and Green Day (Nimrod till American Idiot) or Foreigner CD with Waiting For A Girl Like You which all those albums were much, much better than just a stupid pop singer..dont listen to San Francisco's KFOG because they may play this crap!!
Adios.

This set of Anna Russell's inspired satirical monologues should be labeled with a warning notice. Why? Because after listening to her whirlwind explication of Wagner's Ring Cycle, even the most confirmed Wagnerite will be unable to listen to the Ring for weeks to come. Just listening to Russell declare in an incredulous voice: "I'm not making this up, y'know" is enough to induce you to shed bucketloads of laughter-induced tears. Gilbert and Sullivan fans will find their heroes savaged in her concoction of a typical G&S product, complete with a soprano lead who "loves below her station." Other targets include "the nymphs and shepherds" style of quavery English singing, complete with "hey-nonny-nonny's," coloratura mad scenes, and much else, including Russian folk songs, like her "Da, nyet, da, nyet." This disc is packed with laughs, chuckles, smiles, and everything. --Dan Davis

Intelligent and musical fun.-.......2007-01-13
Due to the recent passing away of the legenday Anna Russell I bought this record and certainly did not regret it.- Inspite of having been originally recorded in 1952 and 1953 the sound is very good.- Ms. Russell combines a great sense of humour with profound musical knowledge, a wonderful timing of her jokes, and the talent of a gifted and very musical singer.- She captures the essence of the German lied, the French mélodie, the efforts of a dramatic soprano to make herself heard over the huge Wagnerian orchestra, culminating in her famous, already classic, 22 minutes long analysis of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs.- I listened to this recording three times in a row and had great fun.- Only Victor Borge can be compared to her with respect to this rare combination of deep musicianship with a real gift for comedy.- If you don't know yet these numbers, don't hesitate - buy the record, you will not be sorry.-
The Genius of Anna Russell.......2006-03-15
If you love music, but are happy to see the funny side of even the great composers, then this album is for you. Anna Russell is a singer of note but a comedian of greatness. She finds the pivotal styles of composers and caricatures them to great effect. The explanations she gives of the basics of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas and the way she dissects Wagners Ring Cycle bring tears to the eyes with laughter. I recommend this album to all music lovers with a twinkle in their eyes. Truly a great comic experience.
If you enjoy laughing.........2006-02-23
I love opera, but I also enjoy spoofs of opera. Anna Russell was a classic "spoofer" of operatic stories and conventions. Nobody does it better. My favorite on this album is her take-off on Wagner's "Ring."
This CD can probably also be enjoyed by those who have only a nodding acquaintance with opera, but may not be enjoyed by those who take opera with 100% seriousness.
Anna Russell strikes again!.......2005-10-14
I have heard all of these Anna Russell selections at one time or another, but having them all together in one place, and on a CD, is a real plus. She is absolutely riotously funny. I teach a course in "Introduction to opera" and use her segments on Gilbert and Sullivan and on the Ring Cycle in class, just to lighten things up a bit for the students.
Anna Russell is a SCREAM!.......2005-08-05
I've had the vinyl of this album for over 20 years; the CD purchase was to update my system. For anyone who loves classical vocal music, and in particular the Wagner Ring Cycle and Gilbert and Sullivan, this album is a MUST. You will split your sides laughing; Ms. Russell is so very accurate in her comedy. Also, truth to tell, her Ring synopsis gave me, a newcomer to Wagner (years ago) a solid understanding of the musical plot and story line.

This two-record set on one CD collects 16 Paul Simon hits from his solo career after Simon & Garfunkel without much rhyme or reason. The selections are not in chronological order and several of the cuts are oddly chosen. Those minor points aside, there are some landmark works presented on these discs. "Hearts and Bones" is a brilliant depiction of a crumbling love affair, while "Slip Slidin' Away" uncovers the hurt of divorce and middle age with a groove that's pure mid-'70s decadent. Simon's infatuation with rhythm is all over the place, from the reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion" to the South African bounce of "You Can Call Me Al." --Rob O'Connor

You can call him genius.......2007-02-22
Paul Simon not only wrote words and music, he performed his own songs too. His passionate voice displays a quiet yet potent masculine strength to it on this album. The CD gives us most of his very best from the years 1971 through 1986. The sound is great and this CD ably demonstrates Paul's prowess as a musician.
The CD opens with the reggae ballad entitled "Mother And Child Reunion." Although the title might suggest a happy event, Paul sings from the perspective of a man who might not be too comfortable with this reunion. "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" is a playful, upbeat song even though the person Paul sings of is in trouble with his parents and probably the law as well. Nevertheless, Paul's character remains unrepentant for any errors in his judgment. Indeed, he plans to run away with his buddy Julio so that he can be free from his parents and the law.
"Something So Right" boasts a beautiful melody and Paul delivers this song with great sensitivity; and "St. Judy's Comet" is a touching ballad about a father putting his child to bed. The words and music for "St. Judy's Comet" make this song a masterpiece.
Other classic and famous ballads on this retrospective CD include "Kodachrome;" "Have A Good Time" with its laid back musical arrangement and exquisite lyrics and "Still Crazy After All These Years" which tells the story of two former lovers meeting by chance and spending some time together. "Still Crazy After All These Years" sports a wonderful instrumental segment between verses, too.
"50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" certainly got its share of air time when it was released. Paul meets a woman and she encourages him to leave his current lover even if he doesn't become her own boyfriend. The melody stuns you with its sophisticated arrangement. The numerous "ways to leave your lover" are presented in a sing-song manner that is in sharp contrast to the sadness of a couple's breakup.
"Late In The Evening" also sports a reggae melody with a great backup chorus; and "Slip Slidin' Away" explores the experience of a couple's breakup with dreams of what could have been instead of the sadness of their failed relationship. In addition, "Hearts And Bones" has a great musical arrangement--love that guitar!
The CD closes with the famous "You Can Call Me Al." Amazon correctly notes that this number has a South African beat to it. The song sports a catchy, upbeat melody as it explores the good and bad of relationships.
The liner notes spend too much time on song credits. I would have liked an essay about Paul and his work but that is a minor disappointment.
Paul Simon remains one of the most successful songwriters of our time. Paul Simon's words and music explored universal topics relating to basic human emotions and everyday experiences. Paul will never be forgotten; his work will live on for quite some while to come. If you liked this CD I recommend other Paul Simon CDs including The Paul Simon Anthology and Surprise. Fans of rock and pop will also enjoy this CD.
My favorite.......2007-02-06
This is my all-time favorite album. Ever.
Although I only ever listen to half the songs on it, it's not the quantity that counts here. It's the quality.
The fact that Paul wrote both lyrics and music for every song on this wonderful album is a testament to his incredible talent in both those areas. The unique lyrics to songs such as Call Me Al, Slip Slidin' Away, and Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard are what set him apart from more mundane, cookie-cutter lyricists. They push him into the category of poet. And, the music is equally as refreshing, even after all these years. His unique phrasing also sets him apart.
The variety on this album makes it one I never tire of listening to. A definite gem, and the prize of my collection.

Twilight Zone.......2007-05-16
Still one of the best pieces of music, Twilight Zone "Rocks" as much today as it did when it was new! The entire CD is great!
Great For Golden Earring Fans.......2007-04-20
'The Continuing Story of Radar Love' is a greatest hits collection of songs by the (mainly) 70s rock group Golden Earring. With 'Twilight Zone' being one of my favorite songs of all time (and still is), I continually have the vision of the bullet slicing through the apple in the music video which was a mainstay of MTV in their early days. Radar Love is Golden Earring' opus achievement according to most fans (I feel Twilight Zone is better), and never fear, that headline song is present, along with several other tracks which pale in comparison to these 2.
If you are a Golden Earring fan or 70s rock music in general I think you will be happy with this collection but the top 2 hits blow away everything else on the disc (Quiet Eyes is pretty good though).
**** RECOMMENDED
Twilight Zone.......2007-04-19
The Continuing Story of Radar Love is a 12-song hits collection from rock band Golden Earring, containing both the 70s rock staple "Radar Love" and the full eight-minute version of "Twilight Zone." These two songs are the most notable on this compilation and both cracked the Top 20, with "Radar Love" hitting number 13 in 1974 and "Twilight Zone" peaking at number ten nine years later. The other ten songs on the album consist of long, heavy guitar-filled runs that surround obscure lyrics, the best of which are "The Vanilla Queen" and "Mad Love's Comin."
TWILIGHT ZONEMany American music fans had forgotten about Golden Earring after "Radar Love," but the Dutch group hung around and remained popular around the world as it performed its mix of hard rock with other sounds and subsequently created many albums worth noting. Their consistent hard work paid off when the group released the major hit "Twilight Zone," a rocker that paired edgy lyrics to a hard-hitting, slick rock sound, not unlike the much newer song "Kryptonite" by Three Doors Down. I guess you could say these guys had thirty minutes of fame, having had two big hits nine years apart. "Twilight Zone" seems to be a story about paranoia, desperation and betrayal. It paints a lonely portrait of "a double-crossed agent, all alone" who is trying to carry out a mission only to find himself betrayed at every turn: "Help, I'm stepping into the twilight zone/This is a madhouse/Feels like being cloned/My beacon's been moved under moon and star/Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?" The music replicates the angry tone of the lyrics by mixing certain melodies that build from a meditative mood to an angry boil with a swirling chorus that consistently shifts direction conveying the frenzied confusion of the agent. Golden Earring's recording of "Twilight Zone" is equal parts hard rock and heavy metal. Anchoring the song is George Kooymans' angry, somewhat bluesy guitar work in conjunction with pulsating synthesizer lines that add a futuristic mood to the recording. Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk adds plenty of exciting percussive frills, providing a major contribution to the song's scorching instrumental break. Singer Barry Hay provides an exceptionally emotive performance with a gruff vocal that enhances the song's mixture of anger and paranoia. This is a thrilling rocker that became an major U.S. and international hit.
A very good distillation of greatness.......2006-11-26
Golden Earring, the talented Dutch foursome of long duration (they've basically had the same configuration for more than 40 years now, since 1965) has an amazing body of work. Many of their finest moments occurred throughout the 1970s and 80s, and this period is fairly represented by the song selection here.
While simple popularity has dictated more selections from the 1973 smash album, Moontan (including the hit single "Radar Love") and its 1982 counterpart Cut (with its MTV favorite "Twilight Zone"), at least a sampling of the vast amount of other great work the Earring produced in the 70s is present.
Hopefully this collection will inspire new fans to explore the deep and pleasurable Earring catalog, including such landmark albums as Switch (1974), To The Hilt (1975) and Grab It For A Second (1978). And it'll certainly remind longtime listeners why they took a shine to the Earring in the first place.
Happy listening!
Golden Earring Rocks Like No Other.......2006-08-14
Can it be that utopia is riding my Harley Davidson along the shores of Lake Michigan, with Golden Earring blaring forth from my twin speakers. I know my wife hates it--but who cares?? After all--she likes Barry Manilow, and that music will NOT be played on my Harley!!!! For years I have grooved to "Radar Love", and "Twilight Zone". For the first time I have listened to an entire album of songs. What was I waiting for?? Wow--plug me in and turn up the volume. Great guitar licks, awesome vocals, and hip lyrics. I WILL be searching for more Golden Earring music soon. Time to put snow tires on my bike!! lol
