Customer Reviews:
Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28 These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.
Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20 For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.
Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.
Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.
Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04 Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.
Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.
I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?
sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30 I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.
this is a treasure.......2003-05-11 Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

y) in a big way, pairing her with the incomparable Nelson Riddle for her first outing, I WISH YOU LOVE. (They would collaborate again for another package, included on the Collectables release POLITELY / SWINGIN' PRETTY)
The tale's been told by Keely many times of how her signature recording came to be: Capitol producers brought her a stack of songs, lastly, I WISH YOU LOVE, a French song that "would never amount to anything". Labeled as a throw away, Keely immediately fell in love with it and bargained that if allowed to record it, she'd do whatever other numbers Capitol wanted. With all this agreeing going on, it's no wonder Keely Smith fans call this album her very finest! But there's more to this album than history or a stunningly gorgeous torchy title track. Nelson Riddle wrote some great charts for Keely to swing with as well; DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE FROM ME being one of them, as well as WHEN YOUR LOVER HAS GONE. Two songs from either side of the "love-line", both classics read with style here. Keely's dreamy version of IMAGINATION inspired all others to follow. With an ethereal sound from the woodwinds, and Keely's trademark plaintive voice soaring just when it needs to over this lovely Burke / Van Heusen evergreen, it runs a close second to the title track as the album's best offering. The heartfelt reading Keely and Nelson provide of the old Louis Armstrong chestnut, IF WE NEVER MEET AGAIN (recently recorded by Tony Bennett and Kd Lang with equally lovely results as a duet.) sits right in the middle of the album, and is not to be missed. Nelson Riddle was a master at his craft, perhaps one of the best arrangers to have ever lived, and he always got the most out of any singer he ever worked with (he had Peggy Lee hitting high notes in full voice years after her breathy phrasing became her trademark sound; and Shirley Bassey hit notes on Riddle charts she never accomplished again) I point to the lovely song I UNDERSTAND on this album and direct your attention to the tag on the ending. Riddle ushers out the orchestra and the chorus sings a refrain, compelling Keely to answer in a lovely high noted closing tag that caps off the song perfectly. Ever a fan of the Jerome Kern evergreen ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE, I was amazed at the fresh approach Nelson and Keely take to make a swinger of this one. This is probably the best of the bonus tracks (it was inexplicably omitted from the original LP) but the stark yet moving 'original' version of I WISH YOU LOVE definitely gives we fans a chance to do the comparison and judge for ourselves, and also offers insight as to the work and thought put in by all parties involved to get the "proper" version of the song out, which brings us now to full circle. Without running on any further, this album IS Keely's finest hour, and well worth the waiting for.

Customer Reviews:
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12 This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

in the pieces where he seems to feel at home.
He has obviously put a lot of thought and work into some of these recordings and I would single out the Schubert-Tausig March, Rigaudon, the Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo, his Gershwin and Tschaikovsky transcriptions and the Blue Danube arabesques as particularly charming and well-performed. I doubt anyone could play his beautiful Embraceable You transcription as well as him. The 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody is also good - solidly played and with plenty of gypsy spirit, and he doesn't pull the piece about all over the place like most pianists do. And the Bumblebee isn't bad either. Also excellent is Gluck's Melodie d'Orphee. He plays this beautifully with exquisitely judged balance and tone. It's a shame some of the other pieces aren't quite as good - Isolde's Liebestod is off target, unfortunately.
I think Earl Wild was one of the great transcribers and it's a shame he didn't write a lot more transcriptions because each one is a beautiful addition to the piano literature. His short and sweet transcription of the Pas de Quatre from Swan Lake (which he plays on this CD) is a total masterpiece. He also dared to play entertaining pieces and to indulge in showmanship, and why not? Why should a concert be a dry lecture? Yes, he is one of the great pianists but not because he had a unique sound or technique - more because he was a great and daring performer and because he made a contribution to piano literature for which the world ought to be grateful.
Riveting.......2000-07-03 This is an incredible CD, marred only by audience coughing and the unnecessary, deafening applause at the end of most cuts, reminiscent of a sitcom laugh track (hence the 4 star rating instead of 5); otherwise, it would have been perfect. The excellent selection of music and Wild's virtuoso playing are both marvelous. I was particularly taken with the Bach fuge and the splendid Gershwin transcriptions. Don't miss this one!
A true romantic........2000-06-21 If you've never heard Earl Wild before, this is a good starting point for you. His technique is impeccable and his mastery of tone allows him to play the most intricate music in the clearest manner. I must admit this disc didn't grab my attention from the very beginning. I found many of these recordings to be an inconsequential jingle-jangle of notes with no true meaning. I still feel that way about the two Thalberg pieces. He may have been Liszt's worthy pianistic rival, but as a composer he comes nowhere close to the great Abbée. Here these pieces get as good a performance as they are likely to get. Also I think Moszkowski's arrangement of the D minor Prelude and Fugue is greatly inferior to Busoni's. I don't care for the way it's played here either. It's too rushed for my taste and it sounds too homophonic, I don't hear the counterpoint of the fugue. This, I believe, is the fault of the arranger and performer alike. The rest of the recordings are excellent. Schulz-Evler's Arabesques are brilliantly played although my favourite recording will always be Jorge Bolet's. Godowsky's transcriptions are so complex and crowded with melodic lines and sonorities that it will leave you gasping for breath. Their performance demands technical powers of the highest caliber. Without that the music will drown in notes. Earl Wild posesses precicely this technique, and in his hands these pieces sound spectacular. Henri Herz's variations may lack profundity but are charming nonetheless. The gems on this disc are Wild's "Virtuoso Etudes" after Gershwin. "Concert Etudes" would have been an even more appropriate title, for despite all the virtuosity, harmonic and melodic invention is the true protagonist. The mood ranges from witty to atmospheric and together with Wild's technique and beautiful tone these pieces create a wonderful unioun. Last but definently not least, I would like to mention the Glinka-Balakirev Fantasy. Here the art of transcription is at its peak and as before, Wild is in full command. Here especially is where his musical gifts shines the brightest. He has it all, perfect legato playing, beautiful singing tone and crystal clear pedaling. A flawless performance. Earl Wild is without doubt a member of the pianistic elite, an old school romantic. I for one think he would have deserved a second unit in the "Great Pianists" series.
Redemption of the Transcription.......2000-02-24 Be prepared: the first piece on this album weaves such a magical spell that you may be startled out of your chair by the applause at the end. The bulk of this collection is from a concert performance, and it was a humdinger. Wild not only displays his astonishing virtuosity, but demonstrates that many of these arrangements and transcriptions are valuable pieces of music in their own right. The Rameau becomes 20th-century neoclassicism through Godowsky and Wild. The Arabesques on the Blue Danube Waltzes becomes a more serious piece than the original ever was. And so on: the bottom line is it's an experience that you don't want to miss. The real gems of this collection, however, are not from the live recital: what I find myself going back to again and again are the Gershwin transcriptions by Wild himself. Breath-taking virtuosity, fascinating arrangements, a beautiful recorded sound, and some great tunes!

A loving tribute to a father from his son.......2005-03-25 It has always been Andrej Szpilman's dream to have his father's songs published in the western world. As the executive producer of this cd, he has fulfilled that dream. Some of his father's songs recorded for the cd were composed during his times in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941. Wendy Lands lovingly sings these songs with a beautiful heart-wrenching voice.
Hunt down the originals.......2005-01-20 happened to be living in Poland at the time of the release of Polanski's film 'The Pianist', and Polish Radio issued a commemorative boxed-set of archive recordings of Szpilman as pianist and composer. Unfortunately, this set does not seem to have been released outside Poland (though some of the piano tracks have been issued separately by Sony). One of the discs is devoted to some 25 of Szpilman's 'Piosenki' (chansons, popular songs) in archive recordings from the 50s, 60, and 70s of (predominantly) the composer's own arrangements - typically for sumptious dance orchestra or big band, and featuring some of Poland's most popular singers (unknown of course in 'The West').
Only when one hears these songs with their original Polish texts (whether one understands them or not), harmonised, arranged and sung in a style that bears the authenticity of their own time, can one appreciate the (no doubt well-intentioned) folly and inadequacy of this Wendy Lands collection. These new English texts are not translations, so the words have been artificially grafted onto a melody that has been crafted to set and convey text with quite another meaning. Of course the quality of Szpilman's material

Customer Reviews:
He is great.......2005-08-03 Fantastic. Great music of jazz. Still one of the best Jazz muscians that I have heard in a long time. He learned a lot and he never surprised me with his music. Great to listen to any of Haryy Connick Jr. music.
Simply Put, Harry Is The Best!!!.......2004-04-11 I have been playing this album and I really enjoy it. The superior talent and musical vision of this jazz giant is just overwhelming. Who would have ever imagined back in 1993 when this album was released that 11 years later we would be experiencing the greatest resurgence of interest in songs from the Great American Songbook ever. Almost single handedly he has managed to create a new fresh awareness to these musical jewels. His original interpretations of these classic tunes brings them back to life, and sets the bar high for all other artists to follow.
If you LOVE listening to GREAT CROONERS and BIG BAND SWING, I would also recommend, MONTE PROCOPIO "SWINGIN' WITH STYLE" CD. He is also a Great Crooner that can really SWING and deserves a listen. Buy both these CDs, you can't go wrong!
Great CD.......2000-07-17 A wonderful collection of some of Harry's best - from big band to piano solos. "I wish you love" is only released on this CD, and is a great song. I definately recommend this CD to any Harry Connick, Jr. fan.
