Throughout the entirety of Da Real World, Missy Elliott is determined to redefine the meaning of the negative, female-targeted b-word (the album was originally going to be titled She's a Bitch). Inverting the term to represent a woman who knows what she wants, Missy exhibits her new attitude by aggressively showcasing her strong songwriting skills and superb vocal talents. Her lyrics are relatively simple, but perfectly complement the syncopated orchestrations of the often-imitated, never-duplicated producer Timbaland. Climactic strings dance around the voices of Missy, Nicole, and Outkast's Big Boi on "All N My Grill" and on "Busa Rhyme" a punctuating tone accentuates the dark confessions of featured MC Eminem. A plethora of guests pepper Da Real World, but the multifaceted Missy is never outshone. --Celine Wong

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars.......2006-11-27

This album is almost flawless and in my eyes, it is a hip hop classic. It is Missy's best album, with Under Construction in a very close second place.

Timbaland's production on here is untouchable, even to this day. Unlike almost every other rap song out there, these songs aren't just the same loop repeated over and over again... they have movements. They unravel as the song moves on. This album, which spans over an hour, does not get boring for even one moment. Since Missy hadn't fully developed her flow at this point, she smartly made the album half singing, half rapping. This also further sets it apart from any other rap release.

This Missy Elliott album, although overlooked, is an essential recording. I would say that it paved the way for other artists... but no one has been able to touch the futuristic genius of Missy and Timbaland on this album. Ha!

5 out of 5 stars Da Real World for Real!.......2005-09-16

Timbaland is the man! He got some hot beats for Missy and Missy added some hot lyrics and came out with fire!. In my opinion this is one of Missy's best work. She showed us how creative and talanted she is. Also the guest apearances are very nice. We got Da Brat, Lil Kim, Aaliyah, Eminem, and Juvenille. I still spin this cd and it doesnt get old. "She's a B*tch"! Thank You

4 out of 5 stars Da Matrix.......2005-09-11

Missy Elliot's sophomore effort, Da Real World, is heavily influenced by the movie Matrix. It's more so the production of Timbaland that gives the feeling and also supports the album as a strong foundation. As the album begins with "Beat Biters", this song sets the tone for the entire LP with dark violin undertones. Missy turns to a more mainstream feel by singing on "All N My Grill" featuring Big Boi and "You Don't Know". Redman take control of the situation on "Dangerous Mouths" as he out shines Missy over a layered off-beat track. To a little rougher feel, "Hot Boyz", Missy actually sings / flow with grace and finesse. After the talking on "Checkin' For You (Interlude)" featuring Lil' Kim should have been an actual song or simply longer with the singing of Misdemeanor and the track. Aaliyah & Da Brat aid Missy on "Stickin' Chickens" for a good lady connection overall with solid performances. "Smooth Chick" and "She's A B****" sounds strikingly similar with only a slight difference, but both are upbeat and both good in their own rights. Another R&B tune, "Crazy Feelings", ends the album as the last song with a slow ride ballad. "U Can't Resist" featuring B.G. & Juvenile is a highlight all rap / hip-hop song on here as Missy takes two verses for herself. Da Real World's production and variety is what makes this a good release for a music lover in general.

5 out of 5 stars Missy is unstoppable!.......2005-07-08

Missy Elliott is one of hip hops poineers who has produced and worked with many artists and continually makes great music.
MIssy doesn't disappoint with this record! Her beats and flows are more aggresive and more street than her latter ones.
Aaliyah, Eminem, Beyonce, Big Boi (of Outcast) Juvenile, BG, Da Brat, Lil Mo, Redman, and Lil Kim(interlude) all contribute on the album but don't ever take away from Missy but only enhance the album.
There isn't one song on here that is bad and this is probably now my favorite Missy CD which used to go to SO Addictive!
Favs: Busta Rhyme, Beat Biters, Stickin Chickens, Hot Boyz, and Crazy Feelings, basically everything!
This album is way ahead of its time.... still is! Go get it if you like any of Missy's work!

4 out of 5 stars excellent companion if you are learning to play the recorder.......2004-05-05

I came to this CD after buying the sheetmusic with the same title in order to learn to play the recorder. (I want to learn since my 5 year old daughter is learning the piano and I want to be able to accompany her.) I was happy to get the CD and hear how the pieces are intended to be played. Actually my favorite tunes (some of them are actually very catchy) are performed with the shawm, forerunner to the oboe. I had to find this out from a google search, since little information about the instruments are included with the liner notes, not even which instrument plays on which track. I can't even pronounce some of the names of the instruments. As far as the recording quality goes, yes it has a low signal, so you have to turn the volume way up; but once this is done, I hear no backround noise, hiss etc. Anyway, a great way to learn the recorder, sure beats nursery rhymes.

2 out of 5 stars Good Performances, Bad Becording.......2003-02-25

This was my first introduction to music of the Middle Ages -- I purchased it to broaden my musical experience. The musicians and singers provide fine performances. However, the sound recording is very poor -- an occaisional pop is heard, as though it was recorded from an LP. Also, the signal level is too low (especially for a supposedly DDD recording). Increasing the volume makes the background noise annoyingly noticable along with a rumbling sound (as though from a turntable). Since, as another reviewer has observed, there are better collections available, I do not recommend purchasing this recording.

2 out of 5 stars good effort, but..........2001-08-09

...this is hardly one of the best CDs out there. Those who think so have obviously not listened widely enough. I suppose its popularity stems from its title, which gives it away as an easy introduction to the period. Multiple preferable CDs exist for each of the areas it surveys: medieval dance (Istanpitta I and II), Cantigas de Santa Maria (multiple releases under that title), Llibre Vermell (the Sarband release; The Black Madonna), Minnesang (Wanderers' Voices), and trouvere/troubadour repertoire (too many). The bottom line: nice intro, but unnecessary if you want to do more than graze the surface of available talent.

5 out of 5 stars Lively medieval song.......2000-08-17

I love early music, but some performers approach it so solemnly they take the life out of it. Sonus is one of those rare early music groups that actually sound like they have fun playing. They improvise brilliantly, the vocals by Hazel Ketchum are natural sounding rather than operatic, and their taste in material is wonderful. Hearing them, you know why people 700 years ago liked listening to music.

5 out of 5 stars I listen to this one alot!.......2000-07-03

At least twice a week lately in fact :-) I find myself fascinated with music of this era and I am very glad I got this album. If you like early music please give the clips a listen and I think you will agree this album is worth buying!

The liner notes contain the lyrics in both the language sung and an english translation. This is handy for folks like me who only know english and want to know exactly what is being sung :-)

5 out of 5 stars Really the Deal!.......2003-01-20

Missy's the real deal.

In a world with poseurs searchin' for street cred (and mysteriously gettin it) and bashin' their Moms for [bad] reasons, ain't it nice that we've got the likes of Missy to truly shake things up and make stuff happen bigtime. She spins the words, razzle dazzles with rhymes and serves up pitch after pitch of catchy, soul groovin' tunes.

Don't ask me about Casper the utterly unfriendly Goob when we got the real deal in Missy. I'll take original and unique any day.

Keep it comin.

4 out of 5 stars Great World Music Experiment.......2002-11-23

This is one of the more ambitious world music fusion experiments in recent years, bridging Tuvan, Russian and West African music. Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, (best known for his work with Huun Huur Tuu) is fabulous, as is Mola Sylla (Senegal). The album darts between Tuvan, West African, Jazz and many other fusions. While there are many times that these experiments don't work, there are also some true gems on the album.

2 out of 5 stars An honest but failed attempt at cultural cross-pollination.......2002-05-25

This album brings together Tuvan throat-singer Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Mola Sylla from Senegal, and two Russian jazz musicians in an attempt to combine traditional ethnic musics from two very different cultures into something new. Tuvan music is an acquired taste. I like it more than most people (in fact, I've seen Khovalyg in concert twice), so I'm as much a target audience as there can be for this album, and I just can't get into it at all. The album was recorded live. Only a few of the tracks even try to mesh the Tuvan and Senegalese sounds together--most of them go with one or the other while the other musicians jam in support. The CD is an eternal 72 minutes long, padded out with a jaw-harp track (an inevitable low point of virtually every Tuvan CD), the free-form jazz (or utter noise, depending on your generosity) "Doudobas", and two minutes of applause at the end of one mid-CD track. I'm presently debating whether this CD is worth the centimeter of space it takes up in my CD rack.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Cd, Short Shelf Life.......2000-07-02

When 'All in My Grill' came out, I knew I wanted to but this CD because I was hoping that the rest of the album would be as good as that song. And, for the most part, it was that good the first two or three times I listened to it. Many of the tracks are catchy and have good beats. However, after that, this album got old, REALLY old, and now it's tedious to listen to. It's too bad that such a talented artist like Missy couldn't create an album that had a longer shelf life.
