beautiful ,beautiful.......2007-05-27
I am not a music critic nor do I "know" much about music but if you love lovely violin music you will love this.
Great Recording.......2007-01-04
The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

Customer Reviews:
Gabriela Montero CDs.......2007-06-12
Excellent service -- speedy, just as described, well-packaged. I'd definitely buy from this seller again.
Non-professional Review.......2007-03-27
Okay, I listen almost exclusively to classical music, but I do so simply for the pleasure and nothing more. I cannot tell you about Gabriela Montero's technique, and, when she improvises, I have no ability to judge the music's intrinsic value, authenticity, or whatever. I can only tell you this: while I own many dozens of albums, running the full spectrum of the classical genre, I value none of them above Montero's Bach and Beyond and her Piano Recital. Pure listening joy!
Absolutely Magnificent!.......2007-03-09
I first saw Gabriela Montero on 60 Minutes a few months ago and was taken by her playing ability as well as her ability to improvise on the classics. Ms. Montero's fingers fly over the keyboard, playing Rachmaninoff more dramatically and key-perfect than I've heard in a long time. I decided to purchase this CD and have not been disappointed.
Improvisations Unbelievable!.......2007-01-26
Gabriela Montero is a tremendous talent, both in standard classical repertoire, and improvisation. I have know her since she was a young girl, and she was by far the best pianist around, even then. She is an undersung pianist of our age, and should rise to the top very soon!
A beautiful breath of fresh air!.......2007-01-20
What a sheer delight hearing her play. I've never heard anyone quite like her. A phenomenally gifted player, and it's a rare treat to hear someone who defies pigeonholing. I had heard her on the radio, and knew I was onto something when her improvisation on a very simple theme gave me the chills. I love both CD's in this collection.
It's interesting hearing the negative response coming from some classical musicians and fans. At times it can seem to roughly follow the stages of grief as proposed by Kubler-Ross. I'm a professional guitarist, and it's funny because it's almost identical to how guitarists react to hearing another guitarist, but with an big class-conscious overlay (all very civilized, of course). Think of the "guitarist screwing in a lightbulb" joke. To paraphrase and extrapolate on what someone might say upon hearing her improvisation:
1. Shock: Wow, he's good. Oh, and it's a woman!? And you say it's improvisation??
2. Denial: That can't possibly be improvisation. Classical musicians don't engage in that untidy process. What she's playing must be written out, and I can tell! Don't ask, I just know it.
3. Anger: This stuff is no good. Only permanent music is of value through the ages, and that's why classical music (and only the European kind) is better than any other music. Besides, I can't improvise, so I reject it - and only THOSE people engage in improvisation.
4. Depression: She can play all the classical music, and seemingly can improvise, or at least pass her stuff off as such. Not only that, she's getting attention and money, and we're not. Why is the world unfair?
5. Acceptance: (sort of) Well, I guess she's selling CD's, and is becoming successful. She is, I hate to admit it, a great player. Even if she is a faker. Of course, they're begging my Muffy to become artist-in-residence in Spoleto....
The other reviewer has a point when he says that she may be viewed as a curiosity. Because she's crossing genres, people may not know what to make of it, and this often causes reflexive hostility. As an improvisor, I would agree that it's hard to say that something is 100% improvised - players tend to have pet phrases and favorite general ideas they return to. But to me, Gabriela's playing is at the highest level of skill, beauty, and feeling, whether improvising or playing written pieces.

Customer Reviews:
Marvellous!.......2005-11-26
I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.
The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26
All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Excellent recording.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.
Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.
Amazing.......2006-05-08
I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.
A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.
Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25
CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

It is great to have this material to play in any motor vehicle. Most newer vehicles do not have cassette any more. My new Kia Amanti has both a cassette and a CD making all my old favorites possible to play.
Who else, but Buti.......2003-01-18
Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!

A+.......2007-05-10
To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.
Even for a trained jazz musician who thinks classical artists are overhyped, this stands out as one of the best albums........2007-04-11
Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.
Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'
I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.
Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.
Fantastic.......2006-08-11
Midori produces some amazing sounds out of her violin!
You cant go wrong with Encore! Shes brilliant.
Enjoyable listening.......2005-09-24
I enjoyed this cd especially the first three pieces. Midori played Sarasate and Paganini pretty well.
very interesting.......2005-09-13
I as watching (and listening!) her play live in Dubrovnik this summer. In this record she is equally brilliant as she is when playing live!

Customer Reviews:
For Gould's fans.......2007-01-10
Glenn Gould was a great Bach interpreter. On this CD there are some less known recordings of Bach' music, like the transcription of Marcello's Oboe concerto. I boght this CD because of this piece, that is very beautiful and well played by Gould. The other pieces recorded here are not as good, including the Italian Concerto. But it is interesting for Gould's fans.
Be warned there are shortcomings, but also be prepared for brilliance!.......2006-05-03
There are some shortcomings to this album and they are pointed out by other reviewers. However, there are gems present here that continue to dazzle long after Glenn Gould's untimely death.
I was particularly moved by BWV 974, especially the second movement. I would happily pay the entire price of this album just to have this particular recording.
As everyone knows, Glenn Gould was eccentric and some of his interpretations of Bach are very unconventional. However, his intensity jumps out at the listener and he is often as dazzling as he is eccentric.
Considering that much of this music was not recorded on piano very often before Glenn Gould came around, I have to acknowledge his contribution to grabbing people's attention. He still continues to do this long after his death, which I think is a testimony to his brilliance.
If you are not a Glenn Gould fan or you are looking for more standard interpretations, this may not be for you. However, if you are looking for a fascinating musical odyssey that is at times quite unconventional, then you might be very happy with this album.
You can certainly get a feel for the music from the samples above. If you listen to them and are still intrigued, I don't think you will be disappointed even with the Chromatic Fantasy. It's an unusual interpretation, but what can you expect from guy who wears winter gloves on the cover of the album and didn't even want to record this piece in the first place - EVER!
An universal patrimony !.......2006-04-12
The huge and significant loss that for the musical world represented the disappearance of Glenn Gould resides in the simple fact that even twenty four years after his sensible departure, there has not been another pianist able to fill his place. His legacy seems to enhance proportionally through the years. His powerful cantabile line, his profound conviction still deserves him this status ?clat, that certainly have guaranteed a well wrought name in the immortality.
This enraptured anima state is not a mere product of the casualty or a mass media phenomena; he restored to music that divine majesty, sensitive effluvium and introspective gaze, far away from the delirious crowds, deeply focused on the meaning of the sound, and not in the beauty of the sound.
That `s why his legend has been increasing, in spite of his well known aversion to the advertising flashes. He never cultivated the public relationships, but the elevated rank of his musical partners, such Yehudi Menuhin, Jaime Laredo, Leonard Rose, Leonard Bernstein, Vladimir Golschman would seem to confirm that far beyond his countless irreverent behavior, his musical heritage eclipses all the previous misbehaved statements, opinions or his well commented and questioned attitude in the sense of deny to make future public appearances since 1964.
Perfection.......2005-08-02
There neither is, nor has been (am may likley never be), anyone who can interpret Bach like Glenn Gould.
BWV 974.......2001-10-18
When you look at the pieces that are in this CD, you might think that these were leftovers. Yet, this CD has one of the most stunning pieces that I think Glenn Gould has ever recorded.
The Concerto in d after A. Marcello, BWV 974 is not one of Bach's more popular and well-known keyboard works. Yet in the hands of Glenn Gould, it is played with a sincerity that is completely profound. Listening to the second movement of this "concerto" has to be one of the moving experiences that I ever had. It is undoubtedly one of the best in the Glenn Gould discography.
Also, after hearing the three Scarlatti sonatas, you'll wonder why he didn't record more of them. It's played with a childish glee that is a joy to listen to. The L. 413 sonata is piece that you'll listen to repeatedly.
Alas, the "infamous" version of the Chromatic Fantasy is in this CD as well. It's not a horrible interpretation like what most people tend to say, but you wonder what in the world Glenn Gould was doing with his left hand.
Overall, the BWV 974 alone makes this CD worth the purchase. It is a stunning recording.

Customer Reviews:
Where Are You My Brothers.......2005-08-04
Dmitri Hvorostovsky's voice is at its amazing, beautiful, passionate best. He seamlessly moves from silken pianissimo to forte, conveying all the tragedy and futility of life lost through war, the false hope and despair of soldiers who have trudged too far and seen too much death, destruction and experienced too much pain, fear and hunger.
songs of courage, loneliness, patriotism.......2004-08-02
Of my nearly 20 Dmitri Hvorostovsky albums, this one is in the Top 3, which has Dmitri singing in quite a different style than what he is most famous for, as one of the great operatic singers of our era, and this CD is far from the "opera singer does crossover CD" type of recording, which can sometimes be quite awful, but sings softly and with intense passion and sincerity, his dark honey toned baritone perfect for these melodious, gorgeous songs.
Though the focus of the songs is WWII, some were written as early as 1905 ("The Hills of Manchuria"), to the wonderful "Cranes" from 1969, and "Somewhere Far Away" was the title for a TV series ("17 Moments of Spring"), about a Russian spy in Nazi Germany, that was shown in 1973.
Some songs are more sublime than others, like "Unexpected Waltz" and "On a Nameless Hill", but there isn't a single composition that isn't filled with beauty and performed to perfection. Hvorostovsky has a voice that is a gift of God, with the technique of a master, and the soul of a true artist.
He is backed brilliantly by Constantine Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the folk group Style of Five, and the rousing sound of the Spiritual Revival Choir of Russia.
The booklet insert is excellent, with liner notes, bios, lyrics in English and transliterated Russian; the sound is good and total playing time is 57'28.
The most beautiful male voice there is.......2003-12-26
The sound of very beginning phrase of it's first song "Somewhere Far Away" grabbed me. This title song for TV series was sung in his natural voice rather than operatic singing. I found it absolutely beautiful. Have you ever heard Dmitri's speaking voice? Renee Fleming quoted "Dmitri has the most beautiful male voice I've ever heard". Well I must say many of us have to agree with her. This album is a good collection of war time songs that indicate harsh reality of soldier's life and emotional state. He expressed them very eloquently. Text has translations but you can feel the depth without it. These songs are melodious and tuneful, I liked his flexible singing of forte to exquisite pianissimo. This is not just sell out for Russians but to everyone. As a Japanese, we grew up in Russian folk songs were heard everywhere. It's nice he introduced us to further extension of Russian materials. Evidently his colaboration with his father and Orbelian worked well. I also appreciate the lightness of "Katyusha" is a nice bonus. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I recomend it to everyone. I hope I get to hear these in his recital someday.
I attended his recent opera(War and Peace /Onegin) and recital in Tokyo. This was his first public performances in Tokyo, yet he was extremely popular here. He received mountain of flowers and presents, and for autograph session, nobody seemed to left the house. His high quality of vocal art, stylish and expressive singing and at most striking impact on his stage presence were overwelming. I hope he'll come back again.

This miraculous recital was Chang's debut recording, made when she was nine years old. In Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy you can hear some very minor flaws in the technique, which were gone when I heard her play it two years later. There's nothing else to indicate that this is a young violinist, not even the tone Chang draws from a quarter-size violin. While none of these pieces is very heavy in musical content, she shows a wide range of sympathies, from the singing lyricism of Chopin to a very hip-sounding "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. --Leslie Gerber

What can I say that does not smack of praise for this debut album by one of the most gifted young violinists ever of the millennium?
The one thing that I find lacking in most violinists' playing is ... fire. Oh, of course, techincal ability ranks high on the list but one has to agree that most of the prodigial virtuosi we've heard so far have most of that particular area of playing down-pat. Chang certainly has the lightning-quick fingers required for virtually all of the songs she plays here, but as the Amazon.com review states -- she also plays with a good deal of _bite_. The deciding pieces are, in no particular order: Sarasate's very famous miniatures from Carmen, the Sabre Dance from Gayane (wonderfully played, with the tempo bright and fast-moving), Gershwin's It Ain't Necessarily So (when I first heard this track, I was in heaven! What jazzy playing for one so young! The violin literally sings and swoons in her capable hands), and Prokofiev's March from The Love of Three Oranges. The last piece, compared to Midori's version (which can be found on her "Encore!" CD), I feel, is better performed -- the speed and spear-driven flashes of the bow are just right. Midori overperforms on a song that's supposed to be a march.
Interesting historical document.......1999-01-06
Immaculate technique, remarkably good tone for a quarter-sized violin, and wonderful musicality for a nine-year-old. Of course, she still has some room for improvement artistically.
Her interpretation of Gershwin's "It ain't necessarily so" is the most sensuous (almost lascivious!) one I've ever heard--such abundant, luscious, provocative slides! Nonetheless, I love it!
This disc is an interesting historical document: hear how well a nine-year-old human can play. No other violinist in history ever recorded at such a young age.
