Customer Reviews:
A terrific compilation.......2002-06-08
The idea of a greatest hits album for a classical composer is nearly an absurdity, but the selections for this package are almost perfect. The signature magic sound of Ormandy and his great Philly Orchestra open with Symphony 4 movement 1.Ormandy and crew reappear later with the war march from Athalie-a true crowd pleaser. Not to be missed is the On wings of song piece sung by Elly Ameling in all her pristine glory. The song is simply beautiful beyond words.Movements 3&4 of the Incomparable Octet for strings are included. At the tender age of 16 Mendelssohn may have reached his peak with this work. The 6 Children's pieces are delightful,if insubstantial. The 4th movement of the 5th Symphony is a force of nature, perhaps the highlight of the disc. The only quibble is the inclusion of the hackneyed Wedding March instead of the achingly gorgeous Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dream.Even for the Mendelssohn fan there are performances here you'll want to add to your collection. At such a low cost you cannot go wrong.

Electronic Classics.......2006-12-03
As far as I know, Isao Tomita is not an original artist in the sense that he composes new works. He is, however, an original artist who puts a new spin on existing compositions and reinterprets them in a new and, mostly, delightful way.
The selection on this album come right out of a "pops" concert given by any symphony orchestra but they are not performed my symphonic orchestras. They are performed electronically by Tomita. This results in some parts being more emphasized than one would expect to hear in a concert hall. It is a new experience.
This work is new and different in its presentation. It is quite enjoyable.
Tomita, Will You Enjoy His Splendor?.......2004-01-08
If you've never heard any Tomita then answer these questions:
1. Do you have a taste for classical music?
Good, you should know some of these peices, and be able to enjoy them.
2. Do you enjoy odd music, peices that are unique?
I personally don't have a taste for synth. But Tomita is very unique and is very enjoyable to listen to.
3. Do you hate pop music?
This shows your intellegence level. Like pop music? Then you are just another sheep and should NOT buy this album. Dislike pop music? You sir or madame may just show a ray of intellegence and should consider this.
This is a nice addition to your collection if you are a serious musician or student of music, (and I don't mean high school band class, I mean like music theory).
Enjoy the sonic explorations into the mind of Tomita.
Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05
5 stars for the music, but why do all the Tomita compilation CDs have almost the same tracks with so much available?
A big box set of every classical Tomita album would be even better. Most of the CDs out of print for years are absolutely fantastic. Four of his albums would fit two on one CD. Here's the complete list...
Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.
Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)
Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)
The Planets 1976 (Holst)
Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)
The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)
Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)
The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)
Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)
Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)
Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home. My favorite live concert CDs.)
A millenium must-have........1999-11-05
This is the true reason God invented the CD player. Ravel's "Bolero" and Holst's "Bringer of War" are standouts, in my opinion. If Mr. Tomita is still living, perhaps, he can grace us with Camille Saint-Saens' "Organ Symphony" or "The Carnival of the Animals" electronically interpreted.
Cleverly-synthesized, familiar classical tunes.......1998-11-02
I use this CD with elementary school children. It's classical music with an electronic twist--fun, sometimes surprising, and well-done!

Amazon.com essential recording
At their best, War walked a line between bleak evocations of inner-city life seen from their California vantage point ("The World Is a Ghetto," "Me and Baby Brother") and delightful affirmations that came complete with winking humor ("The Cisco Kid," "Why Can't We Be Friends?"). All those songs and more fill Grooves & Messages's first disc; the second collects remixes of some of the classics, both strikingly effective (Soundprops' mellow take on "Tobacco Road") and less so (the Ganja Kru's by-the-numbers drum & bass "Low Rider"). Still, those with an ear for both old- and new-school sounds who haven't invested in a War CD may find this two-for-the-price-of-one package irresistible. --Rickey Wright

War...proves themselves to be most worthy Funksters.......2004-02-03
One of the 70's most Influential funk acts, with the impressively consistant catalogue of acknowledged hits, that even to this day, are a marvel in soul-laden grooves than have found their unique music, sampled relentlessly into the dance music scene, (although prominently in the `house' & `R&b' music fields). "Slippin' into Darkness" is a widely sampled track, and its easy to see why..slickly produced, impeccably sung, and toe-tappingly funky, and much of what on this album sticks to that template, of keeping the listeners attention for the use of P-funk, soaring Choruses (sometimes sung by several members in a upwardly spiralling crescendo), also providing significant firepower in getting their funk itinerary across, are "The World Is a Ghetto", "Low Rider" (which is such a excellent track, it's frequently used in films, has been used in a TV. commercial & been cover-versioned by metallers "Korn") & "Why Can't We Be Friends?"......a case of Soul-funkers on a mission to convert the uninformed???...Mission accomplished!!!
Great music, but a disappointing product.......2001-11-12
I bought this CD partly on the strength of the Rough Guide review that described it as a compilation of "full-length" versions. Although it's a very well-chosen collection of songs, it's not true that all the tracks are full-length: at least two definitely aren't. I'm speaking of "Spill the Wine" (in which the second verse is completely omitted) and "The World Is a Ghetto" (which is nowhere near the length of the original album version). It's especially a shame because it's such a great-looking package and there is surely plenty of room on a two-disc set for the full-length versions.
Very Essential.......2000-06-13
War is One Of The Baddest All-Around Groups ever.this Double Set Showcases their Great Talent.War is Long Over-Due for their Props.the Grooves Never Let up.Their Music has so Many Different Styles. They Asked a Very Human Question here Why Can't We Be Friends?Very Powerful&Uplifting.Great Music.
The flyest........2000-03-06
This CD is a plus for many reasons; I'd give it more than 5 stars if possible. First of all, it contains most of WAR's best known and best loved hits on the first CD. The second CD, which is especially attractive for dance fans like me, consists of some good remixes of really great WAR songs. Second of all, the price is more than reasonable--almost like getting 2 CDs for the price of one. WAR is a very underrated band, and they have a wide range of styles and sounds, probably due to the fact that they were a true multi-culti clique. They are right up there with Earth, Wind, & Fire, the Isley Brothers, and any of the various incarnations of George Clinton's groups as far as funk, funk-soul, and or funk-rock with something that most acts don't have today: actual instruments (not computers). This set has classic dusties made just right for cruising, and even the original, non-remixed versions are tight for moving. Wanna be a TRUE big tymer? Grab this CD; you will not be disappointed. Everyone can learn something from this CD, even "current" artists with their manufactured, sample-heavy, test-rabbit sounds. Add it to your collection.
It's hard not to like this cd.......1999-10-19
War never received the radio airtime that it probably deserved, and that is why this cd is so great to hear. Like EW&F, War has been overlooked as a great group...fortunately, we're reminded of their exceptional talents with songs like "Low Rider", "Cisco Kid" and "East L.A"...an all-time favorite that was largely ignored by the disc jokeys (pun intended.) For crusin and having fun, buy this album. You won't be disappointed with anything but the remix cd; that is a useless production

You may be tempted to check out one of the other compilations. This is the best album of War music on the market. If you want loads of filler then get one of the Best of War mishmashes. If you want the cream of the crop, this is it.

Rerecorded and chopped up songs.......2004-06-29
This cd is culled from the import-only Starship release titled, 'Greatest and Latest.' Vocalist Mickey Thomas released 'Greatest and Latest' in 2003 (never in the US) with a different lineup of Starship. The songs were all rerecorded versions of Starship, Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas tracks, under the Starship banner with the current lineup. The new studio recordings happened in 2002. That 'Greatest and Latest' cd contained fourteen songs and came packaged with a dvd, I have the songs from that album.
On the plus side, the rerecorded songs sound great. "We built this city" and "Nothing's gonna stop us now", given all the times I heard them, sound quite different with a stripped down production, louder guitars and minus Grace Slick's voice. Without Grace being there, Mickey Thomas handles all lead vocals. It's interesting to hear him sing verses in songs that were originally handled by Grace Slick.
So the new versions of the songs sound good, which is why I give the album two stars. The songs from 'Greatest and Latest' were licensed for several Starship budget compilations in the US, such as 'Forever Gold', 'Greatest Hits-Delta' (this compilation right here) and 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant.'
The Delta company that put out this cd, for some reason, decided to cut short three of the tracks on this cd. The rerecorded version of "We built this city" runs over six minutes long on 'Greatest and Latest' as well as the other US budget compilations. On this cd it is under five, as the label chops out the great closing instrumental to the song. The new recording of "Fooled around and fell in love" was originally five and a half minutes long on other cd's it appeared on, but here it is again under five minutes. Additionally, the rerecorded track "Stranger" is also five and a half minutes long, or so, and that is also chopped up to under five minutes.
I don't understand the decision since it is only ten tracks and the cd clocks in at roughly fifty minutes. They could have fit the extra 40 or so seconds cut out of those 3 tracks. It all sounds like a hatchet job or bad radio edit. Additionally, the 'Greatest and Latest' import has the full set of 14 rerecorded songs and this one only uses ten of those new recordings.
The point is, the rerecorded tracks sound great. This collection of them, though, sucks. If you want to hear the new versions, get the import 'Greatest and Latest' off Ebay, which has all 14 rerecorded songs. Otherwise, pick up 'Forever Gold' or 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant' (both under the Starship name).
Pretty ordinary or worse - even the big hits.......2004-03-10
Having seen Starship ranked by Blender as the fifth worst artist in music history, it is embarrasing to recall and admit that I once bought a "Greatest Hits" compilation by them.
However, as a child I must admit to adoring their hits "We Built This City", "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" as a child, so that my interest in them when I was wanting to collect the commercial music of that decade is understandable.
It was clear to me even back in 1996, though, that whatever the catchiness and apparent (not real) charisma of Grace Slick on "We Built This City" and especially "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", the rest of the material included on Starship compilations (they're all naturally much the same) was horrible by any standards. Basically, it had the loud pomposity and thickly produced electric guitars that even then I could recognise as having almost no substance or feeling in them. Thus, even before I began exploring new styles of music, it appeared to me that Starship had nothing to offer me.
There was nothing memorable about any of their earlier songs with Paul Kantner - not one remotely memorable hook - and his vocals and those of Mickey Thomas sounded mumbled with thinner (but no less airy) production. Indeed, as they are produced, most of the material on this album sounded and sounds literally featureless and really boring. Even the two ballads "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" have lost the tenderness and beauty they once gave me.
Whilst Starship might not deserve to be so high on Blender's list of the worst bands ever, their music was still of little if any value.
