Funny thing is when i first heard this album, i wasnt a fan of it. so i put it aside and listened to other things for awhile. years later, i got bored one day so i find this cd and i pop it in the player....best CD ever. end of story. dont know what happened. maybe my musical tastes matured, or maybe all it took was a second chance, but this is by far my favorite maiden album along side NOTB. Every song on this album is a classic. this album is a best of maiden cd on its own. it might be a little more progressive than their earlier works, but hey Iron Maiden has always been ambitious and i think it surely pays off here. I might recommend other albums like NOTB or BNW for fans new to maiden to start off with though.

5 out of 5 stars Maiden's Most Ambitious Album!!!!!!Their Best!!!!!!And The Greatest Metal Album Of All-Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-07

Let me just say that no other Maiden album captures the spirit of the band as much as this one.Every album from The Number of The Beast to this one showed you the evolution of this band. All of them were stepping stones to this.Listen to those albums in succession then listen to this one and you will see what I mean. The idea of this album was to perfect the dualling guitars in a melodic way and if you ask me they did just that.Sure they have heavier albums but this one is the one that shows you what this band is all about. Those people out there saying that this album is pop-metal misinterpret this bad.The lyrics on this were their best from the 1980's.The album revolves around a child with clairvoyant powers but doesn't know whether to use them for good or evil. How about Bruce's performance on this one,it is by far his best vocal performance,he does some very angry howls but still has a very operatic approach on vocals just listen to those howls at the end of every verse on the album's epic Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.He has never sounded this good in his career. This album is more moody than any of their releases in the 1980's.The album opens up with Moonchild a song about how Lucifer was plaguing the Seventh Son's mother, this one is old shool metal at its best,a great way to open the album.Infinite Dreams is about the idea of reincarnation and dreams that plague the Seventh Son's father, this one takes time to get used to but when you are used to it,it will become one of your favorite Maiden songs, this song has a very good instrumental section and some mesmerizing dualling guitars from the two gods themselves Dave and Adrian. Can I Play with Madness has Bruce at his finest with those soulful howls, this one is about the Seventh Son's father getting angry with a Prophet who will not tell him about his future. The Evil That Men Do is also Bruce at his finest, this song is probably about the Seventh Son's conception, this one can get a bit redundant but still a good song. Now we get to one of the best metal songs of all-time Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.This is probably the best song of the album. The song is about the Seventh Son's birth and that anything he does will not change his life because it is already written and he can't do anything about it.This song has one of the best instrumental sections that the band has ever done,Dave and Adrian trading solos on this one is a thing of beauty. The final guitar licks are absolutely beautiful with some great snare drumming from Nicko and if you listen closely you can hear Steve play the bass like a madman, one of the best Maiden songs of All-Time.The Prophecy is a song about the Seventh Son warning a village of an impending disater and they do not listen to him and then let's see who is laughing now, this song has a very beautiful acoustic ending which takes you to a wonderful world that you would never want to end, a thing of beauty. The Clairvoyant is a moody rocker about how the visions of the Seventh Son are ruining his life and that he cannot take it anymore, the riffs on this one are scary in a way just listen to them and you will see what I mean, this also has one of the best choruses in the history of Heavy Metal"There is a time to live and a time to die when it's time to meet the maker,There is a time to live but isn't strange that as soon your born your dying".I mean that is some pretty deep stuff right there.Only The Good Die Young is about, well you guessed it the Seventh Son's death. This song is very underrated, behind the synth this is classic Maiden. The lyrics poke at Christianity(which to me is very, very Metal). The band ventures into the dark side on this album, that is why it is my favorite album by them.Everything about this album is right on the target. With this album you have to let your imagination run wild and then you will understand the power of it.This album is best heard altogether and at night. The Maiden sound is perfected on this landmark album.Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A must own album from Iron Maiden All the songs are the incredible best one of bruce dickenson's best.

5 out of 5 stars Still The Best Album Of All-Time!!!!!.......2007-01-28

This is Iron Maiden's seventh studio album, and in my opinion the best heavy metal album of all-time.This album takes you into a magical world in which the Seventh Son tries to warn a village about a holocaust about to occur but they don't believe him.Later the village experiences the holocaust that the Seventh Son warned them about and they blame it all on him.You can hear this story in songs like The Prophecy(a very underrated song). This album includes classics like Infinite Dreams,The Evil That Men Do,Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son(song about the Seventh Son's birth),The Clairvoyant,is a song beyond words, you can't even describe it,just flatout wonderful!!!!.Don't forget songs like Moonchild(another very magical and very good song),Can I Play with Madness is a song that is just fun. This is my favorite album by Iron Maiden, thus the best album in heavy metal history and of all-time.Very innovative, original, and captivating.Just a flatout beautiful album. It makes me want to cry that this is better than life itself.I would give this 1000 stars if it was on a scale like that.Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The End of an Era.......2007-01-01

SSoaSS is probably the last really good album that Iron Maiden put out. There are a few weak cuts but, overall, the disc is solid. "Can I Play With Madness" is a Maiden classic. I hadn't listened to this for a decade; I had forgotten how good this disc is.

5 out of 5 stars Seven deadly sins, seven ways to win.......2004-04-05

Well i'll start off by saying how surprised i was when i saw there were only 5 customer reviews for this album! i like to hear different people's opinions on cds and im sure im not alone.
But anyway, i would have to say that this is one of maidens best albums to date! And for so many reasons too.
The highlight tracks are Moonchild, Infinate Dreams, The Evil That Men Do, the title track and The Clarivoyant.(taht's almost all the tracks anyway)
I find that all maiden fans love Can i Play With Madness, but personally i find it to be a bit of a weak track, but anything by maiden is good.
I think the Prophecy is an underrated song. I didnt put it in the highlight tracks but its still an outstanding track, especially the combination of the synth and guitar at the start and finish.
As for Only the good Die Young, well i think it an average maiden song at most. I think its the repeditiveness of the chorus that puts people off.
Now to the good songs.

The opening track Moonchild is great. And the way that album starts and end with the 'seven deadly sins....' thing is genius and it give the album a real theme.

Infinate dreams starts off soft and you get to hear the softer side of bruce's voice and then it plunger into yet anohter masterpeice.

For a long time i just couldn't get over the track the Evil That Men Do. It is a true classic, and sometimes underrated.

Now for the epic 10 minute title track. This is another amazing track. It gives you some background about the seventh son myth too, even though i still dont understand it too well, something about a clarivoyant who forsees disaster and noone believes him and i dont see where the whole seventh son thing fits in (if you know plaese email me at metal_mayhem01@hotmail.com)

Ahh the Clarivoyant. I especially like the chorus to this song, you can hear the agression in bruce's voice. Now that's music.

So in conclusion i highly reccomend this masterpiece of an album as well as most of maidens other stuff. now go out there and headbang your ass off!

5 out of 5 stars The Last in a String of Great Maiden Albums of the '80s.......2003-02-14

I remember when this album first came out. I had just become a huge Maiden fan after the previous record Somewhere In Time. By this time, I had bought their back catalogue of studio albums and
was swept up by the hype surrounding the release of Seventh Son. I remember Bruce Dickinson being interviewed on MTV's Headbanger's Ball and stating this album would be "quite popular to people who have never seen this band before" because it was the best album they had made to date and it was going to take Maiden in new, exciting directions. Then I saw the video for "Can I Play With Madness," and that whetted my appetite even more (O.K., many fans at the time thought the song was too commercial, but it is still awesome and one of their best singles ever!). I recall bugging the record store clerks many times with "Have you got the new Iron Maiden album in yet?" I don't think I have ever been so excited about an album release before or since! When I finally bought it (I wanted it on cassette, but the store was out so I opted for yes, you guessed it, VINYL because I couldn't wait), I think I was slightly disappointed at first.

My expectations were a bit too high. But the more I played it, the more I liked it. When I listen to it now, after all this time, I can really appreciate the genius of it. A true conceptual album about a child born with clairvoyant powers (the seventh son of a seventh son), who did not want to be born this way and has problems dealing with the strange circumstances he finds himself in as well as the forces of good and evil battling for his soul. The music is brilliant, with accoustical guitar, keyboards and other additions to transform Maiden's sound. In retrospect, Seventh Son was the last great Maiden album. Instead of being a stepping stone to more Maiden innovations, it proved to be Maiden's peak. Things seemed to go down hill after this record, with Adrian Smith and, later, Dickinson leaving to work on their own projects. I still only have this album on vinyl. My record has an Eddie illustration on the round sticker of one of the sides and the song list on the other side (a little annoying when looking for a track). The inner sleeve has lyrics and a small photo of the band on one side and a full page illustration of Eddie at a desk writing in book with a sphere in front showing the significance of his birth. The back cover of the album has an ice scene with Eddie figures as icebergs.

5 out of 5 stars SEVENTH REVIEW OF A SEVENTH REVIEW.......2002-08-11

THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST MAIDEN ALBUM AND HERE IS THE PROOF:MOONCHILD,INFINITE DREAMS,CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS,THE EVIL THAT MEN DO,SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON,THE PROPHECY,THE CLAIRVOYANT AND ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG.IT'S A TRACKLIST BUT IT COULD EASILY BE A SETLIST FOR A CONCERT.THIS IS MORE PROGRESSIVE THAN THE OTHER RECORDS AND FULL OF EMOTIONS.IF ANYONE WANT TO BYE ONLY ONE RECORD OF MAIDEN THIS COULD BE THE ONE.
UP THE IRONS!

5 out of 5 stars Maiden's first concept album ........2002-04-10

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was Maiden's first concept album, and it rocks. Every song is great except Moonchild and Prophecy. The title track is really eerie sound to it, especially in the middle of the song. My favorites off the album are as follows: Can I Play with Madness, The Evil That Men Do, The Clairvoyant, and the awesome Only the Good Die Young. Dave and Adrian the great guitar duo, play some of their best guitar work on here. And Bruce's voice never sounded better. If you are a Maiden fan this a must have, or if you just like really good 80's Heavy Metal than this is also a must have. UP THE IRONS

why the heck is everyone reviewing this?! this album is called "our finest flowers" by a band called "the residents". but for some reason it says Iron Maiden under the title. this has been confusing me for days. Do you guys see this as SSOASS?!?! if you want to review SSOASS type seventh son of a seventh son on amazon and actually review there not here where it says "our finest flowers"!!!!! This is not iron maiden!!!! this is a weird album called "our finest flowers" by a random band called The Residents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Experience........2003-10-30

I first became an Iron maiden fan after listening to the not so fan appreciated album "No Prayer for the Dying". After hearing that album I wanted to quickly by as many of their other albums as I could. After researching I decided that I wanted to make my first 2 album purchases be Number of the Beast and then Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Well, because of certain circumstances I was able to obtain mainy other albums, but never Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. After years of listening to the albums I owned I came to the decision that Iron maiden was one of the best heavy metal bands in the world, and that not very many albums could touch the greatness of work like Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind. Then finally came the chance to purchase Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Let me just start off by saying that this album is way underrated. No words could really prepare for how great this album was gonna be. For the first time I was able to listen to an entire Maiden album and like every single minute of every single song. You don't only listen to SSOASS, you experience it. Bruce Dickensons vocals are not only amazing, but flawless. On this album he continues to prove that he has the most unique voice in heavy metal and that a voice can be just as powerful as any other musical instrument. Steve Harris, like before, lets his instrument be heard unlike many other hardrock and heavy metal bands. The Title track of this album is one of the best, and even though it stretches over 9 minutes, it never seems drawn out. I'm not gonna get into any more of the songs because I would be talking on it all day long. I'll just finish by saying that SSOASS is Maidens best work, and probably in the top 5 of greatest albums of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars I am not worthy...............2002-03-30

Words that come to my mind when I think or listen to this album are : magical , beautiful , amazing, breath taking, etc. etc. etc....
This album takes me to another world of fantasy and mystery. I enjoy listening to it that much.
No one I ever heard was able to top 80s Maiden, and I doubt anyone will.

    5 out of 5 stars Underrated Maiden.......2001-12-10

Seventh Son of a Seven Son seems to have always been underrated especially by Iron Maiden fans. There are a lot of reasons why this album should not measure up to albums like "Number of the Beast" or "Piece of Mind"...and they all fall flat!
I feel that this album is propably Iron Maidens most harmonic effort so far, by that not saying it is the best. The album have an occult/supernatural theme that it keeps all the way through. All the songs seem to revolve around mysticism and the occult, which give great contiunity. The sound is different from their previous albums though, and that might be what a lot of fans dislike, metal-fans never been too happy about changes. I find the new sound refreshing though, and Iron Maiden seem to be at their best, both lyricaly and musicaly. The extra emphasis on keyboards might scare some fans too.
I truly enjoy the "theme" of the album, I find it entertaining with a subject for an album, almost like Bruce Dickinsons solo-album The Chemical Wedding. All the tracks seem wellcrafted and wellproduced and very maidensk. There is nothing wrong with this album.

    5 out of 5 stars A Mature Maiden.......2001-11-01

I bought this album when I was 12 and I've been a Maiden fan ever since. I still beleive this is their best effort to date and it amazes me when fans slag the record off. This is a complex album, you've got to put a bit of aural effort in before you can appreciate it fully! Granted, it doesnt have the immediacy of a "wasted years" or "run to the hills," but it repays the listener with an untouched complexity after a few listens. Maiden must have considered it a gamble to release a concept album at what was probably the height of their success, but it paid off on the strength of these songs. Have they ever before (or since) released an album with no "weak" songs? I dont think so. So I agree that there have been individual songs that may be better than any individual song on "seventh son", but this album is a classic and no other maiden album can touch it...so far. Up the Irons!

      5 out of 5 stars Epic.......2005-05-12

Not alot to say but a must for any iron maiden fan or any metal fan for that matter. Probably the most underrated cd maiden has released. It's title track is epic. One of my favorite songs ever and probably maidens most underrated song. The instrumental part at the end can't have been better. "The Evil That Men Do" is also a good song and has very interesting not very maiden lyrics. "Can I Play With Madness" is definitly the rocker of the bunch and probably the only song a regular maiden would've heard of on this cd.
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LACK OF HITS. Though it might not be the most popular album it is right up there with number of the beast which I might add is also definitly worth looking at.
      A good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Seventh album is first on the list.......2004-07-26

Iron Maiden's first and only one true concept album. Every song is there for a reason and the album couldn't stand the loss of one of them. It's just one piece from the very beginning until the very end.

1-Moonchild : Great intro with keyboards. It just prepares you for the excellence. 10/10
2-Infinite dreams : In the same vein as Revelations. Brilliant. 10/10
3-Can I play with madness : The commercial song of the album. But still has its place on a "serious" album. Catchy, very 80's sounding but is still good today. 9/10
4-The evil that men do : A great rocker and a great chorus. 9/10
5-7th son of a 7th son : A 10 minute long epic that sums all of the best things in this album (and in Maiden). A masterpiece very close to Rime of the ancient mariner, great instrumental break. 10/10
6-The prophecy : A very heavy and dark chorus with great voices by Bruce and a beautiful acoustic outro. 9/10
7-The clairvoyant : The other "commercial" song of the album. Great guitar work during the verses. Catchy. 9/10
8-Only the good die young : Closes the album in a great way, as good as Moonchild did open it. 9/10

Individually not the strongest album. But you have to look at the ensemble to see how genius this is. The ultimate Iron Maiden album. The ultimate heavy metal album. The ultimate album. This is the one I would like to be buried with.

This is the all time classic Maiden Album. Even the artwork is my favourite out of all their albums. The full spectrum of music from driving metal to entrancing harmonies create an incedible listening atmosphere. The entire band's performance is 5 star with the MVP being shared by Bruce and Nicko.

By the release of this landmark eighth album, Iron Maiden had settled into what's generally considered their classic lineup. With Bruce Dickinson, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Nicko McBrain operating at the very peak of their form, bassist Steve Harris, the band's mastermind and main songwriter, decided to extend the Maiden remit yet further by unveiling their very first concept work. Contemporary critics scoffed in the face of such a grandiose gesture, but Seventh Son of a Seventh Son spawned no less than four British hit singles and remains an indomitable highlight of the Maiden's illustrious career. From the strident commercial metal of "Can I Play with Madness" through the keyboard-enhanced epic bombast of the title track to the fretboard intricacies and chest-beating machismo of "Only the Good Die Young," Seventh Son finds Iron Maiden at their most assured and creative. This is a spectacular example of 22-carat heavy metal. --Ian Fortnam

4 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden tackles the concept album with great success.......2006-03-22

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988.), Iron Maiden's seventh studio album

Throughout the 1980's, Iron Maiden were a band that were hard to match. Every one of their releases were great, whether it be the definitive metal album in 'The Number Of The Beast' or the monstrous epic that was 'Powerslave'. The band had led the way in influencing many a metal band and had also along the way built up a massive fan base. With the band's previous effort, 'Somewhere In Time', Maiden's progressive tendencies became much more apparent. The band began to experiment more and more with epic tunes as well as the usage of synths in their music. When Iron Maiden released 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son', their popularity couldn't have been greater and the album duly debuted at #1 in the album charts. 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' is another of Iron Maiden's highly praised efforts and is also regarded as one of their more accessible works. So how well does this concept album work?

Eventhough I wouldn't quite say this album is in the league of the band's earlier masterpieces such as 'Powerslave' or 'Number Of The Beast', there is no doubting this epic and greatly assured album succeeds on many levels. The album demonstrates the classic Maiden line up on top form, something which would not be seen for a long time after this album, as guitarist Adrian Smith would leave the band following the tour for the album. For a concept album, this album is remarkably accessible, as many fans have pointed out. Hit staples such as 'Can I Play With Madness' and 'The Evil That Men Do' are great tracks that succeed without consideration of the album's concept. All of the songs on the album are quite easy to get into, even if you don't get the album's concept. The concept of the album itself is built around a child born with mystical powers who is tempted by the good and the evil. The storyline works very well in the album - to date Maiden's only concept work! The other great success with this album is the integration of synths (played by Steve Harris and Adrian Smith) into Iron Maiden's heavy metal sound. The synths add a bright texture to the music but at the same time don't burden or cloud the band's metal sound. The work is distinctly Iron Maiden, through and through.

Not too long ago, the Iron Maiden catalogue got totally remastered and improved. Hence the 1998 remasters are the way to go. The remaster job is great and all of the songs shine through with no sound glitches but also the recent version features and excellent accompanying booklet. The CD itself also has an enchanced multimedia section and you can view video footage of the 'Can I Play With Madness' and 'The Evil That Men Do' songs from your PC.

Iron Maiden kick off their great concept album with 'Moonchild'. A spoken opening from Bruce Dickenson sets the scene for the album, before the synth heavy riffs kick in. This is a great opening track, and one of the best songs on the album. The song has a great riff and is really well underpinned by an insanely fast bass line played by Steve Harris. The song also has a really atmospheric bridge section with great vocals from Dickenson. 'Infinite Dreams' follows; a very underrated Maiden track. This song incorporates softer, synth filled passages which are contrasted well with heavier sections. The song fades out quite cleverly into 'Can I Play With Madness', one of Maiden's more famous songs. A great song, perhaps just a little overrated. Still it is really catchy, has a great chorus and keeps the album theme running very well. 'The Evil That Men Do' follows and what a track this is. The song has darker undertones and this is reflected in Dickenson's snarling and biting vocals. Again, a song with a great chorus line, which made it an instant successful single.

The second half of the album gets underway with the title track epic. This is a phenominal song filled with differently styled sections. The chorus is grand and strong and the interlude is soft but atmospheric and captivating. However, the song get's really special towards the end where the band let rip racing guitar lines, solos and great synth effects. 'The Prophecy' follows, a weaker track but still good. The opening is great however the following call and response styled verses get a little repetitive. Still, the song has a grand feel to it. 'The Clairvoyant' follows; a great progressive song. The bass opening is entrancing before the guitars steadily build to a great climax. Bruce Dickenson gives an inspired performance throughout over some timeless guitar riffs. Next, to finish the album is 'Only The Good Die Young'. This song is an OK closer, although the band have done much better and there are certainly plenty more superior songs on this album. The guitar work is great but you can't help but feel the song could develop a little more. The song closes with another Bruce Dickenson spoken passage.

So there you have it, Iron Maiden's concept album. 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' is a awesome album which for me only marginally falls short of being a masterpiece due to a couple of average tracks. This aside though, this album has some thrilling stuff and also is a great mark of Iron Maiden's development as a band into progressive territory. Any fan of the band should definitely own this one. This is also a very accessible album and is one that even more casual fans of the band should fully appreciate. All in all 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' is the final mark of the great innovative heavy metal that Iron Maiden put out in the 1980's.

      MY RATING: 8/10

      5 out of 5 stars Almost Epic!.......2005-05-31

The best album Maiden ever, although many others will give this honor to PowerSlave, which is almost as good as seventh, but seventh introduces new sounds without becoming symphonic rock, giving the right balance of rock and mistic

5 out of 5 stars An epic masterpiece.......2004-04-05

Coming out in the year 1988, where disposable hair metal trash like Poison and Cinderella, Iron Maiden released what would be the pinnacle of their creative genius, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. This epic concept album brings forth an onslaught of power and emotion.

RANKING OF SONGS (*=1 star, 1/2= half-star. Example- ****1/2 would equal 4 and a half stars)

      1) Moonchild- incredibly powerful track to open up such an intense album, musically and lyrically. Easily ranks amongst previous openers for albums (Ides of March, Where Eagles Dare, Aces High, Caught Somewhere in Time, etc.)

      ***** stars out of 5

      2) Infinite dreams- a melodic and solid follow-up to moonchild. Dramatic song that is just amazing.

      ***** out of 5

      3) Can I Play with Madness- Maiden's attempt at a huge poppy single. Descent song, but at times embarassing. They tried too hard and ended up with a bit of a let down.

      ***1/2 stars out of 5

      4) The Evil that Men Do- 2nd single off album that succeded where "Can I Play with Madness" didn't. Overall great song, but isn't powerful enough to be amongst the lines of classics like the trooper or hallowed be thy name. Just short of a classic.

      ****1/2 stars out of 5

      5) Seventh Son of a Seventh Son- Every good maiden albums needs an epic track. Here is 7th son's, the title track. Dramatic and impactful epic track. Easily amongst the ranks of Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Alexeander the Great.

      ***** stars out of 5

      6) The Prophecy- a highly underrated song. Nice chorus and guitar work. Like the evil that men do, just short of a maiden classic.

      **** stars out of 5

      7) The Clairvoyant- a true maiden classic that is a fast-paced rocker that has one of the most memorable choruses (it's hard to get out of your head). I think this song is better than The Trooper or 2 Minutes to Midnight. Favorite song on the album.

      ***** out of 5

      8) Only the Good Die Young- an emotionally strong and moving close to one of Maiden's best albums. It brings forth the end and ends it on a powerful note. Incredible song. Literary expression does no justice to how great this song is.

4 out of 5 stars Maidens Supposed Dark Side Of The Moon.......2001-12-07

Before I listened to this CD I had high expectations coming in. Judging from reviews on this sight this was supposed to be an epic concept-album and Maiden's greatest moment. I was expecting, from a lot of high reviews and some low reviews, that this album is going to be a masterpiece or a pretentious synth-laden mess. I actually found a little of both. This album is sure overated. No way this is better than the immortal " Powerslave " or even better than its predeccesor " Somewhere In Time " This is still a great album to buy after you've bought " Number Of The Beast ", " Piece Of Mind ", " Powerslave ", " Somewhere In Time, and the awesome " Brave New World " It's supposed concept isn't well put together. Even for a concept album it's pretentious. You don't even notice the story while listening to the songs except for in the beginning and in the title track. It's also dissapointing that there's no epic songs on this album. Sure the title track is almost 10 minutes, but 2.5 minutes of a song with an insanely repetive chorus plus pretentious chanting plus 7 minutes of wankery, very good wankery though, does not an epic make. This album is also notable in that it was Maiden's commercial peak. It spawned an unprecedented 4 singles, 1 which was classic, 1 which was great, 1 which was good, and 1 which was an embarassing slice of cheese. Anyway heres my grades.

      Song Grades

      1. Moonchild-The " 7 deadly sins " intro is a great moment, it also closes out the album, but this, while a good opener, isn't as good as " Where Eagles Dare ", " Aces High ", or " Caught Somewhere In Time " The D & D lyrics also bring this song down and they could have made a better chorus. Still a rockin' tune though.

      Final Grade-B

      2. Infinite Dreams-Every Maiden album, except for the two Bayley albums has a masterpiece song on it and this one takes the cake on this one. This " Revelations " like energetic semi-ballad is perhaps Dickinsons finest vocal performance. They would rehash the subject matter of this song on " Dream Of Mirrors " on " Brave New World " This is Maidens best song ever released as a single.

      Final Grade-A+

      3. Can I Play With Madness-Here comes the first mistep on the album. Sure this got them some radio-play, but this embarassing cheeze-fest is still one of their worst songs. The chorus (is bad) and the lyrics sound like Poison using fantasy lyrics. " Flight Of Icarus " was a little cheesy too, but at least it was emotional and had great guitar. It wasn't ruined by the synths as this song was. Not that great to begin with anyway.

      Final Grade-D+

      4. The Evil That Men Do-It isn't the greatest song in the world, but its sung in such an energetic way and it has a great haunting chorus that you can't help but like it. I can't get the " Living on a razors edge, balancing on a ledge, you know... " chorus out of my head. It's the 2nd best song on the album. Great choice for a single.

      Final Grade-A-

      5. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son-You could view this either of two ways. If you view it as a song, it fails. If you look at it as a good mood piece on a concept album like " In The Flesh " from " The Wall " it's great. I'm still a little disappointed because as the title track it should be the best or close to the best song on the album. All of Maidens other title tracks are excellent by the way.

      Final Grade-C+

      6. The Prophecy-This is a pretty underated song. If they made better lyrics for this song it could have become a Maiden classic. The lyrics though bring it down.

      Final Grade-B-

      7. The Clairvoyant-Great guitar in the beginning. This was one of their big singles from this album. I really like the chorus on this song. This is a good song, but not as good as previous singles like " The Trooper " or " 2 Minutes To Midnight "

      Final Grade-B

      8. Only The Good Die Young-This song should have been released as a single instead of the retarded " Can I Play With Madness. The only problem I have is that as an album closer they could have made this song longer and more epic. This song had the potential. Could have made it into another " To Tame A Land "

      Final Grade-B+

I feel that Maiden should have kept only the good material they wrote from 85-88. Then they would have had a tremendous album. They should have kept " Caught Somewhere In Time ", " Infinite Dreams ", " Heaven Can Wait ", " Alexander The Great ", " The Evil That Men Do ", " Sea Of Madness ", " Wasted Years ", and " Only The Good Die Young " Imagine what a great album that would have been.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute masterpiece.......2001-10-11

This album shows just how deep and conceptual Iron maiden can be. This album is the only one I can think of by Iron maiden that actually has an on going story to it. The story is about an ancient legend where a god would have children and his seventh son would be gifted. That son would then have children and his seventh son would be the embodiment of a god with gifts like foresight and healing. The songs they wrote were a deep refelction of this, and were questions on whether the seventh son of a seventh son would be good and use his powers to help people, or be manipulated into evil and use his powers for his own ends. A common asked question is how these songs fit the concept yet most seem easy to conclude (although only the band know the whole truth). "Can I play with madness?" seemed to touch on the child hiding the truth of his visions to gain power over people, "the evil that men do" seems to talk of him being manipulated by the emotions of people who cause pain, "seventh son of a seventh son" seemed the easiest to understand as the lyrics clearly mentioned about the forces that were observing the child's growth and which side he'd choose (good or evil). Anyway enough of the concepts, what of the music? Well here it seems that they have created some great songs. "The clairvoyant" was good for its varied pace and awesome use of keyboards, "the evil that men do" was an epic all out track. while melodic underneath it still had some killer riffage and great vocals. The others all had their credits too, (Barr "the prophecy" as that song was weak) on the whole this experience will leave you thirsting for more. This is maiden at its best, in between all out speed tracks (previous examples being the trooper and aces high) and slow melodic songs (previous examples being "Alexander the great" and "Hallowed be thy name") with so much varied use of instruments and pace as well as concept and classic lyrics you understand why this album is held in such high stead. This album however will almost certainly flop with those who are only interested in Nu-metal as it is too mature to have roaring vocals and every track sounding the same. However if you liked albums such as "master of puppets" by Metallica, "Countdown to extinction" by Megadeath, "slave to the grind" by Skid Row and "Cowboys from hell" by Pantera then quite simply this album will appeal to you like honey to a bee, I shall end by saying buy this album as it is classic metal!
