A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars the perfect movie.......2007-03-10

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-20

This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.

4 out of 5 stars musical memories.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD DEBUT.......2007-06-09

A good debut by a young artist , the second album blew this away though

5 out of 5 stars Incredible debut...........2007-04-21

I went about this backwards. I came upon Steppin'Up first and back tracked to get this one. If I had heard this one first I would have anxiously awaited the second one. What impresses me the most is that he has cultivated a sound that is distinctly and most uniquely his very own. It is not heavy on vocals and that is certainly a most refreshing change of pace. Sometimes the instrumentation should just speak for itself and that is precisely what the artist has allowed to take place. Some of my favorites include, Hudson River Drive, Alicia Keys' Falling, Neighbors, On The Down Low, Dorothy and Going Home. The best was to describe the title song is I kept it on repeat for the better part of one day. This is a wonderful project and I hope that people will give it and a very bright and innovative artist a chance. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz at its BEST!!.......2003-11-16

I visited Andre's website at http://andrewardonline.com and heard two of the tracks as background music. They are absolutely awesome!! Andre's style is so smooth, it's like silk. I've ordered his CD and can't wait to hear the other tracks. Andre' is a fantastic musician - I've known him since his college days as lead sax in the jazz band. Buy his CD, you will not be disappointed, trust me!!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Find!.......2001-12-27

After hearing the song Neighbors from this CD on a radio station, I turned to Amazon to check out the rest. They all turned out to be great! Some have a good beat that will make you want to snap your fingers and tap your feet, while others are soft and relaxing. This is the kind of CD that once you buy it, you listen to it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD if you can find it!.......2002-01-30

This is vintage Hampton String Quartet. Recorded while they were still on RCA, this album shows the group's early potential. To see how they have grown, compare the "Stairway to Heaven" on this CD with the "Stairway to Heaven" on HSQ's independent CD "Sympathy For The Devil". The rock string quartets capture the vitality and energy of rock much better than other attempts by classical musicians. A great CD!

4 out of 5 stars Mozart Meets Steppenwolf.......2000-06-22

This is a great CD for studying and working to. It's all of your favorite songs but done classical style which helps improve on mental abilities. I listen to this while I am at work or studying in my dormroom. The Hampton Quartet really pulls through with this one. 4 stars!

This two-CD set collects a couple of shows by George and Ira Gershwin. Both produced in 1925, the two musicals--Tip-Toes and Tell Me More--are fairly obscure and don't boast as many famous songs as contemporary Gershwin offerings such as Oh, Kay! and Lady Be Good. Still, they are bursting with wit, invention, and joie de vivre. Based on a 1998 concert production, Tip-Toes is delicious, and several songs deserve a place in the Gershwin pantheon: the ballad "Looking for a Boy," the love duet "That Certain Feeling," and the rousing dance number "Sweet and Low-Down." The score is also notable for its spectacular writing for duo pianos. Tell Me More is not as immediately accessible (indeed, it had the shortest run of any Gershwin musical, with 32 performances), but it's delivered with élan by its topnotch cast, which includes Sally Mayes, Christine Ebersole, Diane Fratantoni, and David Garrison. Under the expert musical direction of Rob Fisher (from New York's famed Encores! series), this double set is, of course, essential for Gershwin completists. In fact, just about any fan of zany Jazz Age artifacts should relish it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Tip-Toes, which made its Broadway debut on December 28, 1925, was produced by Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley, who had been the producers of the Gershwins' smash hit Lady, Be Good! the year before. Attempting to repeat that success, they once again combined the same book writers, Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, with the Gershwin brothers. Tip-Toes was well received by audiences and the press, and ran for 194 performances. It was given a subsequent production at the Winter Garden Theatre in London, opening August 31, 1926, running for 181 performances.

One of the most overlooked Gershwin shows, Tell Me More was also the most unlikely of Jazz Age musicals. In an era marked by lavish extravaganzas and brash star vehicles, Tell Me More, which opened on April 13, 1925, relied on charm, modesty, and an impish sense of humor. Because it failed to recoup its investment on Broadway, it was relegated to the list of Gershwin flops; because its score was largely forgotten, it has been widely regarded as a minor effort. In truth, it's a key show. As the only full-length collaboration between George and Ira Gershwin and B.G. DeSylva, it combines the delicacy and grace of the scores George had written earlier in the decade with DeSylva and the bold wit he had pioneered in partnership with his brother Ira four months earlier in Lady, Be Good! The best of both worlds, Tell Me More was a one-of-a-kind achievement.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gifts from musical theater heaven!.......2005-07-24

The restoration of several complete Gershwin scores in recent years has been a gift from the theater gods. These two shows lack the bite of "Strike Up the Band," "Of Thee I Sing" and other earlier releases, but they have no lack of the Ira's wit and George's effortless melodies. Upbeat tuners "Kickin' the Clouds Away" and "Sweet and Low-Down" are especially engaging, and the authentic-sounding orchestrations lend a nostalgic aura. The first-rate casts seem to be having the time of their lives.

4 out of 5 stars Tell Me More and more and more.......2001-12-07

I bought this CD because I had seen the concert of Tip-Toes, which I found enjoyable if uneven: great songs in Act I and not much in Act II. But for me, the real revelation here is Tell Me More, a totally forgotten Gershwin musical from the Twenties. I only knew one of the songs, "Kickin' the Clouds Away," but this score hits all the right notes, from gently melodic to flat-out funny. And the cast couldn't be better. David Garrison and Christine Ebersole are hugely funny in the comic roles, tossing out their one-liners like the Broadway pros that they are. And what a delight to hear the romantic couple on one of these vintage recordings -- in this case, Diane Fratantoni and Philip Chaffin -- sing just like a real period couple: him with the creamy tenor voice and her with the boop-a-doop flapper sound. Their rendition of "Three Times a Day," a lovely ballad with a Kern-like flavor, is, for me, the highlight of this 2-CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Two restored little Gershwin gems.......2001-11-10

Although the Princess shows of Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse back in 1917 tried to introduce a solid plot into the American musical comedy, the story lines still did not amount to much until "Show Boat " set the standard. So when George and Ira Gershwin opened with two musicals in 1925, the first was based on a mistaken-identity situation already a cliché in the genre (Bolton did the book); and the second (again with Bolton, plus B.D. de Sylva) was about the Florida land boom that also formed the basis of Berlin's "The Coconuts" the very same year.

Both "Tell Me More" and "Tip-Toes" were part of the discovery of many Gershwin manuscripts buried in a New Jersey warehouse; and we can be most thankful to New World Records for restoring the scores and bits of the dialogue in a two-CD boxed set (80598-2). The music is what you would expect from Gershwin: 1920s jazzy with that special core of Gershwin genius. Yes, a good deal of it sounds like Berlin and Kern--as did just about every other contemporary composer except Romberg (who sounded like Herbert). On the other hand, "Kickin' the Clouds Away" from the earlier show seems to be the inspiration for Berlin's "Shakin' the Blues Away" written two years later! "Tell Me More" also does not shy away from ethnic jokes (i.e., mistaking a request to disguise oneself as British for doing so as Yiddish) that do not offend at all. And if we moderns grow impatient with the rich bubbleheads of the F. Scott Fitzgerald crowd, they are still a breath of fresh air after the population of "Miss Saigon" and plays of that sort.

The game casts have voices just right for this sort of characterization and delivery. The "Tip-Toes" production is taken from the Carnegie Hall Concert version and is outstanding.

This New World set deserves a place of honor among the other Gershwin Brothers restorations on other labels. And do not forget the New World complete recording of Kern's "Sitting Pretty," which (like these two Gershwin shows) did not produce any hits but is delightful from overture to Finale Ultimo.

1 out of 5 stars Another Tribute album..........2003-12-02

Upon listening to this CD, one ponders the question why re-create songs that are already in this arrangement? Norah Jones is very mello, dull and boring as it is. All of her work is through-composed. She just writes as she goes with no attention to form.
These Vitamin guys must be cranking these CD's out in bulk just hoping that one will cash in. Do we really need muzak versions of all these rock-pop artists? The music was created originally for a certain ensemble. Putting it in string format does not heighten it's credibility. Furthermore Vitamin keeps hiring the same people to do these arrangements, why not at least experiement and make logical new arrangements based on the music (i.e. maybe a smooth jazz for Norah) to offer a fresh version-whoops you might steal that idea now...also I heard the tracks from the guy that was originally hired to do this..Joe Andolino.. and he's a great arranger. Too bad Vitamin doesn't care. Based on the used copies available of this already it speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars slammin' CALDERONE & QUAYLE club mix!!!.......2005-10-21

Unfortunately, two really BIG club remixers names are NOT mentioned on the track listing. The "club mix", track 4, is remixed by Victor Calderone & Mac Quayle, and is a nine and a half minute peak hour diva anthem. The Nu Soul mix is a Maurice Joshua mix, and is his typical boring light disco house. All other mixes are hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars Im Feelin this.......2004-03-10

I love this song. It makes me fall in love again and again with by boyfriend everytime we listen to it. This is a perfect sunny day win the boy or girl of your dreams songs. I would never compare solange to her sister, she is a star seperate from Beyonce. Thanks to Solange for puttin her own flavor in this song. This is my jam.

1 out of 5 stars It doesn't run in the family.......2003-03-26

I know I'm not the first person to mention this, but when your sister is a good singer, that doesn't somehow mean YOU'RE a good singer too. Solange looks fine and all, but she has the weakest voice this side of Ashanti. And it's hard to hear what she's saying anyway because this song is ridiculously overproduced. And N.O.R.E. doesn't make things better with his tired verse. By the way, what's up with him repeating lines lately? In this song, he keeps mentioning that he's 26 (remember in "Nothin'" when he kept saying "I'm half Spanish"?). We heard you the first time, N.O.R.E. Anyway, this song isn't even tolerable. If you're around when it comes on, leave the room.

5 out of 5 stars Feelin' this song!.......2002-12-18

I love the song "Feelin' You!" For some reason I feel Solange's debut album Solo Star won't be released in the U.S. Just like all the other talented young R&B singers Christina Milian, Yasmeen, Latrelle , and almost Nivea (her self-titled debut album Nivea finally was released Tuesday,December 10.) I don't understand why every talented singer I like's album mostly never are released in the U.S. Rhona, Nicole, and Kelis all had atleased one album never released in the U.S. Oh well.
