A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

This is my favorite Christmas cd. I ordered it for Faith Hill's song but ended up liking all of it. I ended up playing this more then any other Christmas cd.

One of the Best Movie Soundtracks For All Age Groups.......2006-07-13

Frankly I have always been a fan of the movie. I own the movie as well as the soundtrack; they have been the best additions to my collection. Some advide on purchasing, if you have never watched the Grinch or have watched the movie but did not listen to the music while the movie was playing then it is most likely you will not like this soundtrack. You have to watch the movie and love it to love the soundtrack.

I can honestly say that I am fan of all sorts of music and I can appreciate pretty much anything when it is good quality. The Soundtrack has songs sung by artists like Smashmouth, the Eels, Faith Hill, etc. What was most amazing to me was not only the fact that I wanted most of those songs, but the fact that all the songs and music I heard on the movie were actually on the soundtrack, a total of 23-24 items. The CD is separated into two parts, the music I described above and then the music sung by the Who's, which is pretty much the musical score. In between all of the great songs in the CD there are pieces of the movie where the Grinch recites lines from the movie.

This movie soundtrack was very well worth what I paid for it. Please make sure you did enjoy at least the movie if you are thinking of buying the soundtrack, as the soundtrack is not for everyone's ears. Now, if you are into Christmas music and you liked the Home Alone 2 Soundtrack then I think you would like this. Good luck with your purchase!

Totally different from the TV soundtrack!.......2006-12-27

Here it is FORTY years after its premiere---and the "Grinch" soundtrack stands as one of the last of a great musical tradition that extends all the way from the 30's: completely scored in a colorful, very "legit" technical manner, based on a thorough grounding in classic song-writing and background scoring/orchestration. And this cd presents it all in bright, clean and detailed sound.

What is puzzling and fascinating is this: considering that the production of "How the Grinch..." in 1966 was apparently not an especially lavish one, how is it that the soundtrack exists in TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VERSIONS, each with its own similar but different background music, and each with DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT arrangements of the three songs??

It's too bad that all of the major musical figures---Albert Hague (composer), Eugene Poddany (the guy who did the intense work of scoring the whole thing TWICE) and Thurl Ravenscroft (singer of "You're a Mean One..")---have all passed on; as institutional memory goes, we may never know why the work was scored and recorded one way for the film and another completely different way for the MGM soundtrack album. I can see some cutting and patching together of the film soundtrack and an EXPANSION of the songs for the LP---that would be logical---but an ENTIRELY new score?

I know I sound like a broken (LP) record, but I will continue to wonder about this. In any case, the 21-minute version of the soundtrack contained on this cd is great. And I must say that Boris KArloff's narration is absolutely BRILLIANT; it's so easy to take it for granted, since we all know it practically by heart. But take the time to really listen to Karloff's reading---the subtlety, the nuance, the pacing---the amazing RANGE of sound and vocal color--and the sensitivity of "the Grinch's small heart grew 3 sizes that day"......GREAT stuff!

And to think, Karloff could pull off this tour de force barely a year or so before his own death. (You will notice a frequent change in the audio
quality of the narration--sometimes with much low rumble and surface noise; sounds like it was assembled from a variety of audio sources).

The cd also contains the songs themselves WITHOUT narration as additional tracks---so you can really enjoy the tunes and lyrics of Hague and Suess AND the fabulous work of Mr. Poddany.

Yes, the CHORAL work is quite different from the TV version too. The women's voices are really pretty raw in this soundtrack version (Thurl says they only used 4 women total in the session), but at least you don't have to put up with that raucous, out-of-tune kiddie chorus which was looped over the adult voices in the TV soundtrack.

All-in-all a delight, and a great tribute to the talent of the people who created and performed it.

This is the album version of the classic television special How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It is not exactly the same as the TV show. Boris Karloff's narration is still here, but the background music is different. None of the sound effects from the cartoon are included. Boris Karloff speaks Cindy Lou Who's dialogue himself, while on television those lines were done by June Foray. And the songs seems to be slightly different than they were on televison. These changes were no doubt made for the betterment of the album, since listening to an album is a different experience than watching TV. This is a wonderful listening experience. It chokes me up every time when the Grich learns the true meaning of Christmas and turns good (hope I didn't spoil the ending for you). The CD also includes the four songs from the show separate from the main story, although of course they are also within the story itself.

The Grinch has successfully displaced Ebeneezer Scrooge as the spirit of anti-Christmas for today's audience. And there are similarities. Just as Tiny Tim was a strong factor in Ebeneezer's redemption, the children are a strong factor in the Grinch's redemption.

It's a pleasure to be able to hear the great Boris Karloff narration, along with the songs, and then afterwards to again hear the songs reprised.

Of course, this is a short CD, just barely 30 minutes in length. One must realize that while the program was supposed to be a half hour long, nearly a third of the time was used for toy advertisements. The irony of it all, a beautiful story telling us that the joy of Christmas is in the spirit of Christmas, not in the getting toys is aired for the purpose of selling overpriced and non-imaginative toys.

Anyway, this is definitely a 5 star CD.

Dr. Suess TV Classic Is Great But...........2001-01-13

This album truly fits the bill. It does cover all the songs and full narration of Boris Karloff but be warned... it's not an exact soundtrack from the TV show. When Cindy-Lu Who speaks in this version, it's actually Boris himself which is quite a surprise. Charming nonetheless. A true classic.

For the Child (..and the Grinch) in All of Us.......2000-10-24

We all can be a Grinch sometimes, but during Christmas I love to be a kid (..and pretty much all year round). If you grew up watching "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" during the season then you will love this CD since it features not only the original songs but also the original narration by Boris Karloff. The movie is a timeless Dr Seuss Classic and now you can have the music to sing along with during the holidays.

Album Description

2 albums on 1 Eye To Eye & Shakespeare Stole My Baby. The pop duo Eye To Eye was the brainchild of vocalist Deborah Berg & pianist Julian Marshall. They issued two albums in the early 1980's, the first of which, their self titled Eye To Eye, reached # 99 on the Billboard charts and sported a top 40 single, Nice Girls. That album along with their second release, Shakespeare Stole My Baby, have only been available as high priced Japanese imports until now.

DANFANS MUST HAVE THIS!.......2007-07-21

I got the first album "Eye to Eye" on cassette in 1981 because Gary Katz was the producer and because the cassette "album cover" blurred vision of what appears to be a plane in flight resembled the artwork on Steely Dans' Greatest Hits blurred "train-like" image. Two plus two equals four?
Almost. It's not Steely Dan with a female vocalist but it sure is close. Every song on the original Eye to Eye is great with Nice Girls being the lead. You hear Fagen and Becker in the music, not in the lyrics. Deborah Berg has one of the best female voices you've heard. The music and guitar arrangements are right off a Katy Lied or AJA or Gaucho session with endings of some songs making you swear Becker's finishing it off. My understanding is that Fagen contributed for sure and it is clear he's there as well as Dan's musicians of that time.

Don't go looking for the Eye to Eye as a solo cd. This is a combo deal and the 5 stars come for the Eye to Eye tracks only. You can buy the combo or do as I did and buy the Eye to Eye album on itunes for $7.42. (receommended). If you love Steely Dan it is the best 8 bucks you'll ever spend.

I agree with an earlier reviewer, it took me twenty-five years to find this stuff long after I wore out my cassette. Like an idiot, I did not save the cassette artwork, but who knew it would be nice to have now.

Wonderful debut, so-so follow-up! .......2007-04-01

Eye to Eye's debut album was one of my favorites in the 1980's, with great pop/synth fusion and Deborah Berg's beautiful vocals I thought they would be around for years. I never bought their follow-up "Shakesphere Stole My Baby" so I was very interested to hear it when I saw the double CD for sale. Hearing songs like "Hunger Pains", "Life in Motion", "Nice Girls", "More Hopeless Knowledge", and "Progress Ahead" took me back to my early teenage years and my love of music. As a singer myself I can appreciate Deborah Berg's vocals, she has a phenominal voice and her background vocals are right on point. I agree with the poster after me that she does sound a little like Basia, but in my opinion she is the one who does a better job of interpeting and emoting on these songs, Basia bores me to tears! Julian Marshall's keyboards fused with a great back-up band make the whole experience incredible. You should buy the CD just for the first 8 songs, if anything. There are a few nice moments on their follow-up, but it just doesn't mesh like the first album does. The songs are too frantic-sounding for me, more of a rock and disco feel as opposed to the more new-wave/pop sound of the first. If it were just the first album on this CD I would give it 5 stars, but because of the follow-up being not as good I must give the overall CD 4 stars. It is definitely worth purchasing!

Don't be fooled.......2006-06-21

Don't be fooled by the musicians' pedigrees; this is overwrought art pop of the worst kind. The singer sounds like Basia with even less ability to emote and interpret the songs, and the grooves are just dopey. I come back to this record every now and again hoping to like it the next time, but no.

Inside Out.......2004-07-20

I found the much maligned (here, at least) second album, Shakespeare Stole My Baby in a cassette cut-out rack in 1983. All this time later, I remember where and when. The how was Gary Katz' name on the J-Card. Steely Dan had stopped recording, and suddenly, here was Katz. Had to check it out.

I was stunned and amazed. Deborah Berg was a voice I knew right away I could listen to forever, and the musicianship was every bit as precise and professional as anything Katz had done for Dan. "Guest" musicians read like a who's who of '70s studios. I was hooked. And I really, really liked the tunes. The lyrics were inspired in their simplicity - their anti-Dan straight-forward familiarity freed Berg's voice to dominate them - and the package was knee-bopping, toe tapping, finger snapping and anything but simplistic. Shakespeare Stole My Baby remains my most favorite cut-out rack find, and among my most remembered hooks and phrases at random times sources.

Oddly, again, at least based upon what I've read here, I never got into the first one. But a bonus is a bonus. Maybe living in my CD player for a couple of weeks will warm me up to it, too.

Either way, these recordings are unique, apparently rare, and cheap at any price. Get it.

Finally out on CD!.......2004-05-26

Great Jazz-Pop! Grab the CD while you can. I had these casstte tapes back in the day and had been looking forever for digital versions--now they're here.
Their first, self-titled album, featured the quasi-radio hit "Nice Girls." The album features Deborah Berg's great voice and Julian Marshall's smooth keys. While there are notable guests, the album has a very stripped down feel (sometimes it seems there's only voice, keys & drums) that highlights Berg's great voice but I prefer a more lush soundscape. Overall, tracks 1-8 seem a tentative 1st effort that I never got into.

I must respectfully, but completely, disagree with some of my fellow reviewers in regards to their 2nd (Shakespeare Stole My Baby) album (tracks 9-17). This is the true gem. Peppy and playful with catchy hooks and vocals to match. Combines Jazz & pop with some rock and even a dash of funk. My favorite, "TWA Sari," is propelled by great lead and rythym guitar licks from the phenomenal Larry Carlton combined with Marshall's somehow relaxing keystrokes. The sunny "Mermaind Man," the lovelorn "Falling for a Funny one," and the hopeful "Are You Listening?" also generate fabulous sounds.

The perfect record as day turns into night.

Let me start off by saying that I love the Grinch - it's simply not Christmas without him. But this soundtrack of the classic TV special is not what I had expected it to be. All the dialogue and songs are here exactly as heard on the TV program, but really if we wanted to hear the exact TV special, we could just as well pop in the tape or the DVD. Boris Karloff's dialog and Grinch are divine - no gripes here. When you're listening to the songs as interspersed throught the dialog as originally intended that's OK too. I like the idea of reprising the songs complete with no dialoge, except during "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" there are some large gaps in the song where dialogue exists. The songs in tracks 11-14 could stand better editing for better continutity.

What blows my mind though is that Turner (which now controls the film) has stooped so low as to package this delightful soundtrack in such moronic packaging as this. How cheap! I can honestly say that this is the poorest excuse for a CD case I have ever seen in a Turner/Warner product. The Grinch deserves better than this.

The Jim Carey movie notwithstanding, there are 2 soundtrack versions of the 1966 TV special: this one from Turner and the other version with the white cover from (I think) MCA. The other version is not taken directly from the soundtrack as this one IS, but is more of a studio recording. While you can't surpass the performances as seen on TV, I do prefer the MCA version of the album. The performances by Boris Karloff (on both albums) are essentially identical, and the Grinch's lines on the MCA disc are taken directly from the soundtrack. Thurl Ravenscroft's singing of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" is only slightly different between the two albums, but on the MCA disc is done with better continuity (and more clarity) and that is the rendition of the song you usually hear on the radio at Christmas time. I especially love the addition of the word "deplorable" in "You're A Mean One" on MCA's album, as follows: "Your soul is an appalling dungheap, overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable....."

4 Kids Only (But Some Great Music for DieHard Horner fans).......2002-11-09

I happened to come across a free "Starz" movie weekend and caught this movie. Normally I wouldn't dream of watching this movie and am not a Seuss fan.

However, this movie was so surprisingly funny and good, I watched it twice and I'm pushing 60! I absolutely LOVE Horner's music and wasn't aware he scored this one.

But, I was disappointed when I found there was so much narration from Carrey and Anthony Hopkins and mostly kid songs (it IS a kid's movie, though.) I found cuts 15,21,22 the best. Great Horner instrumentals, soaring and inspiring. Warning: Cut 15 is magnificent to 1:06, then come the farting sounds (it IS a kid's movie, though.) I would recommend it for these 3 cuts if you're a die-hard Horner fan. I would give these 3 cuts 5 stars, but only 4 for the entire CD because the majority of cuts are for VERY young juveniles.

The Grinch is back.......2001-12-06

You cannot not love this tale and after witnessing the horror that was the movie you can't help but, return to this tried and true release. This is a great way to fill a stocking, if you are the kind that puts a twelve dollar stuffer in that is, or to add to your holiday music collection. So, for those who grew up with this tailing and for those of us who have a more Solstice view of the season this is a wonderful release to own.

How The World Knows Christmas Is Joyful And Essential.......2001-10-30

WOW!!! This has got to be one of the most touching Christmas stories in history! This may not be the video, but this is still a great copy. The only thing is, Horton could've been axed to allow some alternate copies of the songs on here. Horton doesn't have much of Christmas at all, but is still a classic Seuss story.

As you know, the Grinch starts off desperate to get Christmas out of his life (and you can't do that! Ha Ha!!) with a smaalll heart. So he goes to Whoville with his dog and sleigh at night, breaking into every house, and taking everything out. Then he crests back to the top of the mountain (Mt. Crumpet, of course) to dump everything. He stops near the top to listen, and... his feelings for Christmas change all of a sudden with the aid of the Whos singing joyfully. His heart grows three sizes, his cup runneth over! He decends back to town and takes back everything he has ever done! He even carves the roast beast.

Dear Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray that You would touch everyone who indulges loneliness, who is lost in this world, and those who despise the Christmas season. Give them Christ, grow their hearts to to overflowing, and make them joyful! Reveal Christmas to them in Your spirit as a time to rejoice to the Lord, and to grow in their faith more and more, and to repent of their sins. Give them the power to move the mountains in their lives. Make everyone in Your whole entire world celebrate this joyful holiday with smiles on their faces. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.

He's a baaaaaad man.......2005-11-06

I've always heard about his x-rated records that they used to sell from underneath the counter at the record stores. Now I get to hear them. I'm not sure anyone but Boozoo could have pulled it off. Kinda raw, but in fun. After hearing the sanitized versions for so many years, its sort of like "hey, he can't say that on a cd". Maybe I need to get out more.

Boozoo's timing is ephemeral. Lots of stories about people having a hard time following him when playing with him. It shows more so in this particular cd than others I have by him, but, he makes it work, and he always does.

I'm not sure anyone but Boozoo could pull it off.

If you are looking for the kind of CD that has you "car dancing" like an idiot, this is the one to buy. This is one of the best examples of button accordian around, by one of the two most influental men in Zydeco (clifton Chernier being the other. From the opening song, "Dance All Night," your body starts to move on it's own-there is no need to look for the beat. All the way through, Boozo's hard edge voice drives to your very soul, and makes you want to howl right along with him. Be sure to send the kids away, then turn the volume all the way up for the X-rated songs "Uncle Bud" and "Deacon Jones," both long time Bar favorites by the master and now availible for home use. This disk will get the party jumpin' and the Spirits flying. By far, thisis the one disk I pull out for every party.

Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

One of the most underrated rap groups of all time!.......2007-02-28

Organized Konfusion should go down as one of the Top 5 rap groups of the 1990's. Combining some of the most innovative lyrics to go along with some of the dopest beats, Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po never quite got the credit they deserved. Their self-titled "ORGANIZED KONFUSION," "STRESS: THE EXTINCTION AGENDA" and "THE EQUINOX" were groundbreaking albums. Of course, Monch's first solo effort, "INTERNAL AFFAIRS" is a hip-hop classic!

As far as this CD-single goes, "WHO STOLE MY LAST PIECE OF CHICKEN?" was a clever hook that works unlike other gimmick-type songs. As good as "Chicken" is though, the other cut featured here... "THE ROUGH SIDE OF TOWN (SOUTHSIDE) is in my opinion one of the best songs lyrically you're going to hear! Here is one their lyrics:

Reading it doesn't give it as much justice. You have to hear it to appreciate the flow and you have a chance to by copping this single. As rare as this is, you shouldn't miss this one because you may not see it again for a LONG time!

Chicago's Isotope 217 sounds like a designation on the periodic table of the elements, but it's actually an art-groove collective that features members of Tortoise, Chicago Underground Trio (and the similarly named Chicago Underground Duo), and others. Guitarist Jeff Parker and cornetist Rob Mazurek provide melodic through lines to the material, giving the listener a foothold. When drummers Dan Bitney and John Herndon take the lead, the music becomes a spare, dubby dance workout. When all five get on the same page, however, letting Matthew Lux build a groove, the band really takes it up a notch. The music gains a purpose and the energy goes through the roof. The best example here is "Moog Ang," where the group simultaneously builds outward, free-jazz explorations piling atop a slow melodic line. Less groove-oriented than the group's other two albums (The Unstable Molecule and Utonian Automatic), Who Stole the I Walkman? still makes for interesting listening--it's just that the band has changed into something more experimental and cerebral. --Tad Hendrickson

Notional Bypass.......2001-03-06

This album has been maligned by many for being less focused than earlier Isotope efforts and for not offering more specific clues regarding the ongoing fusion of jazz and electronica. True, it is a more shapeless affair with a decidedly schizophrenic agenda, but it is these aspects which establish the album's unique merits. "Who Stole.." is essentially an uncharismatic index of musical possibilities, drifting in and out of locked grooves and avant-jazz motifs and overlaying them with an eclectic selection of organically generated cut-and-paste interludes. It provides a more subtle challenge to pervading ideas about stylistic juxtaposition, less concerned with the shock and entertainment potential inherent in such an exercise and more confident that its wide-ranging forays and contrasts will achieve lasting appeal. Don't expect any answers, only intrigueing questions.

Less focused.......2000-08-11

Isotope 217's first release, "The Unstable Molecule," is a definitive staple in post-rock annals. The follow-up, "Utonian_Automatic," lacked the smoothness of the debut, but what it lacked in that area it made up for in terms up improvisational spirit. This newest release from 217 sounds like they are experimenting more, but the overall aesthetic is less finished, more like a batch of random ideas and experiments and less like a complete work of art. There are more electronic gadgets and effects floating throughout the mix, which further widens the ever increasing gap between 217 and Tortoise comparisons. The only real clunker is the tenth track (" < <") which is anything but abstract; it consists of Damon Locks doing crowd shoutouts over a booty 808 beat. The rest of the album is less what you would expect, although those familiar with the Designer/Commander EP release from last year some of the more manipulated moments might not come as a surprise. While the album seems like an attempt to capture the improvisational flare of the group's live performances, it lacks the finesse or impact of previous releases. It's not a bad album by any means, but falls short only in comparison to their great previous releases. Check those out first, and then if you're wanting more, come back here.

If it's not jazz, what is it?.......2000-08-08

So the last two albums have most certainly been jazz - another level of jazz, but still jazz. But what is this that we have here? We have all the elements of jazz -- thrown in with all the usual elements that the boys and girls and whatevers have been known to throw in, but this time what comes out is an insane abstraction into the world of sound art. Perhaps its most concrete moment is in one of the greatest abstractions of all, the rewind song, < <. I recommend buying this just to see what its all about, but get their other albums first.
