Many of the Songs on this Compilation, Despite Being Standards, were Unknown to Montez, but Most were Perfected in Just a Few Takes. Songs which Would Seem Alien to his Vocal Style Became his Trademark. In Total, Chris Montez Recorded Four Albums for A&m Records Between 1966 and '69. There is a Large Helping of Standards, from the Day and Much Earlier, Played in a Rhythmic Lounge-jazz Bossa Style by Seasoned West Coast Studio Musicians. Handclaps were De Rigeur, and as Laid Back as Chris's Vocals. The Blend of Styles was New, and the A&m Recording Quality Excellent, Still Sounding Fresh Today.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!.......2007-07-31

I've been waiting for Chris's A & M hits to come out on CD for years.
Even though he may not have had the greatest voice in the world, he had good material and style. I'm glad Herb Alpert was able to persuade him to change his style from rock and roll to the soft smooth sounds that he became so noted for. As is the case with most of these anthology themed CDs, this is an import.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Pricey but Worth It.......2006-09-24

I listened to Chris Montez's A&M LP's back in the 60's when they were selling in the stores but I had borrowed the records and had not bought them for myself. I bought two of his hit singles and still play them but missed some of the other songs in the original albums.

In addition to Chris's smooth vocals I enjoy the musical arrangements and backing vocals equally as much and some of the live performances retain a vibrant quality not often found in other " Live " performances.

In recent years when I became equipped for ( legal ) music downloads from popular download sites I was surprised that Chris Montez early Monogram recordings were available but not the songs he did for A&M. When I found this CD available I felt it was just a bit pricey but I did want to hear those songs and own them for myself on CD. I am often reluctant on buying compilation or re-issue CDs if they are not from the original label as you dont know if you will really get the original " Hit " version of the song that you remember or what the actual source was for making the CD you are buying. As far as I can tell the tracks featured in this CD are indeed the very same as featured on the original A&M Singles and LP Albums. The sound levels and quality may vary slightly from track to track indicating various sources may have been used in this compilation. If you want this music however, to me, it was well worth purchasing although I am still going to keep my eyes open for the original albums at flea markets, tag sales etc. For now however, I believe this CD is as close as you are going to get to having those original A&M Albums and this is close enough for me. The Hit Singles are in this one and some of the best Album Tracks as well. I would suggest buying this CD while they are still available.

Thanks, Polidor ( UK ) / Eclipse for making this compilation available.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on the queso.......2005-08-30

You definitely have to be of a particular mind set to appreciate the dulcet tones of Chris Montez. Yes, he carried the gauntlet (or is that margarita glass) passed to him by Ritchie Valens. Yes, "Let's Dance" was on the Animal House soundtrack, which I used to hear at frat parties in the mid 80's. Yes, John Lennon got mad at him for some reason and dumped a beer on his head. Yes, Deke Dickerson's old surf band Untamed Youth did a cover of Chris' "Some Kinda Fun." Is it so wrong for me to drive around Nashville in a 1986 Oldsmobile with my windows down, singing at the top of my lungs along with "Time After Time?" Is it wrong for me to remember a particularly "special" moment associated with Chris' version of "There'll Never Be Another You?" Listening to the A&M recordings, you almost feel like you're right there at the party at some swanky tiki looking club, clapping along and pounding down tequila. Chris Montez helped to make lounge music cool. If only someday, I can see him perform in Vegas, I will be a happy chiquita.

5 out of 5 stars Very original sound!.......2003-04-05

Ok, first, I have to say, this man is my Uncle (I know him as "Uncle Zeke" for Ezekiel). So, anything I say is biased. But here goes anyway... Uncle Zeke has a very original voice and songs like "Call Me", "The More I See You", and "I Ran" are simply fantastic. No, he's nothing like Ritchie Valens and I don't think he ever wanted to be. He was a solo artist from the 60's who happened to be hispanic - so everyone drew up comparisons. But listen to his music. A hint of the Beach Boys in the early years and something sounding completely original in the latter part of his career. Nothing like Valens. And he was very original. You should buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Some Kinda Fun!.......2000-11-06

This was a great overview of Chris Montez's career."Let's Dance" is one of the greatest rock'n roll songs ever recorded. To be honest,I preferred Chris's early rockin' stuff more than his later jazzy pop period.Don't get me wrong,I love "Call Me"and "The More I See You",but 10 songs in a row in the same style got a little repetitious. All in all, though,a great tribute to a guy who carried on the Ritchie Valens tradition of Rockin' good songs!

5 out of 5 stars Nice representation of Chris Montez' career.......2000-05-04

This compilation of the two phases of Chris Montez' career was a welcome find, since no domestic CD existed and his LPs have been out of print for years. The Monogram cuts (1962-1964) showcase his phase as a protege of Richie Valens or aspiring Latin rocker. I've always enjoyed the organ part on "Let's Dance," which compensates for a relatively weak vocal. The A&M phase (1965-1968) is well represented, although there was ample space on the disc for more songs. The party atmosphere of these recordings, plus the instrumental work of Julius Wechter and Pete Jolly, compliment Montez' vocal style well, resulting in a satisfying and upbeat effect. What makes this package really special is the thorough and well organized biographical and recording history notes. This information is valuable because the LPs lacked complete credits. What we really need now are reissues of Chris' A&M albums THE MORE I SEE YOU-CALL ME, TIME AFTER TIME, FOOLIN' AROUND, WATCH WHAT HAPPENS and CARTAS DE AMOR. All are late 60s except the latter, sung in Spanish and issued in 1983 on A&M Discos (Mexico).

5 out of 5 stars Not up to an earlier standard but still very good.......2000-06-20

Back in 1994, Marco Polo label released a real gem, almost every note of the Georges Auric score to "La Belle et la Bete" (8. 223765) possibly the finest score to any film--ever. In 1998 they followed up with suites of his music for "Orphee," "Ruy Blas" and "Thomas l'imposteur" (8.225066). Wonderful scores but they pale somewhat compared with the first recording. And that is my only negative concerning the 3rd volume in this series, Actually there are two suites from the film based on the Notre-Dame tale: one for full orchestra and one for two harps, two guitars and cello. This is, by the way, the awful version with Anthony Quinn and Gina Lollobrigida. So as I always have to say about film score recordings, the music stands or falls on its own merits. And if one listens as if one is hearing a series of very short tone poems, then this CD, as does Vol. 2, succeeds very nicely indeed. As always with Marco Polo, the liner notes are quite helpful. But please go for the "Belle et Bete" offering first.
