Customer Reviews:
Pretty close........2005-09-09
This single-disc compilation makes a pretty good introduction to the legendary folk/ blues musician, Lead Belly. The sound quality is good and comparable to the more recent collection Absolutely the Best, and this CD contains many of the same standards as that album, including "The Bourgeois Blues," "In New Orleans," "Goodnight Irene" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," as well as additional classics such as "Yellow Gal," "Blue Tail Fly" and "The Boll Weevil Song." The only thing stopping this collection from being indisputably more definitive than Absolutely the Best is the unfortunate absence of "Midnight Special," a song famously covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival in the late 1960s, and probably one of Huddie's four or five most popular songs. My suggestion? If you're willing to shell out a bit more, then get this album along with Lead Belly Sings for Children, also available on Amazon. The latter contains the aformentioned "Midnight Special," as well as a number of wonderful children's songs, spirituals and medleys.
Almost.......2004-11-06
You can't go wrong with this compilation. For a longer review, see the other reviewer's remarks. Remember no "best of" is best without "Midnight Special", recorded by a kajillion other artists. (Is there a Leadbelly estate?) Be prepared though for the sellers of any compilation including that song to stick a gun in your ribs for the CD(s). If you can afford more money, skip this one for the one with ...you get up in the mornin', you hear the ding dong ring...
One of the very best single-disc Leadbelly compilations.......2004-08-16
This Cleopatra disc is a great place to start for those just getting acquainted with Huddie Ledbetter. It's not definitive, of course, but these fine transfers of Leadbelly's best-known songs will satisfy most casual fans, and while "Take This Hammer" (a part of the "When The Sun Goes Down"-series) is probably a little more accessible for the casual listener, you can't beat this disc as far as the song selection goes.
More serious fans will of course want "The Definitive Leadbelly" from the Catfish label, or the multi-volume "Leadbelly Legacy" series from Smithsonian/Folkways, but this is a terrific starting point for the curious. Huddie Ledbetter, who usually performed solo accompanied only by his own twelve-string guitar, was the first black musician to gain recognition amongst the white audiences of the 20s and 30s, and this is essential early American blues and folk music.
Must have original blues.......2000-06-15
Lead Belly was the basis of todays modern blues. If you have ever heard the gospel blues of the early 20 th century you must have this album. Blind Willie Johnson, Son House, and Lead Belly these were the original deep rooted spitually agangst singers.

Great Blackfoot CD Even Without Rick Medlocke.......2007-08-04
TRAIN TRAIN is a great Blackfoot CD, even though Rickey Medlocke is no longer involved with the band. Instead, we have two other great singer/guitarists- Bobby Barth and Jay Johnson- filling his shoes, creating a sound that's sort of like a harder and heavier version of the Outlaws. The band even opens with "Railroad Man", from their rarely heard debut album NO RESERVATIONS. Moreover, the bandmembers' advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, increased funding for law enforcement, and capital punishment for kidnappers make this CD/DVD an essential purchase for your ears, your eyes, AND your conscience.
This is southern Rocks BEST!.......2007-07-12
WOW!,Medlocke is not missed on this one.Blackfoot always were the heaviest and most guitar savvy southern rockers.Everything on this disc is sonically awesome,Greg's Bass is like a punch in the gut.Great guitars and vocals. Buy this no worries. Also, Charley Hargrett is the coolest person in rock.
The flag is flying high.......2007-07-12
As a long time fan it's great to see and hear Blackfoot in such good shape. They are still rocking and rolling with that boogie thing they have always had. You might think they are just old farts playing live jukebox like so many old bands but they are not. You can see they really enjoy playing live and you can feel the spirit and fire. Of course, we all miss Jackson and Ricky is making bigger money elsewhere. But still, Greg T. and company are keeping The Flag Flying High.
NO MEDLOCKE NO BLACKFOOT.......2007-07-11
i bought it, and could not get past the fact that ricky medlocke and jakson spires are not a part of this. the vocals are not even close, nor are the two new guitarists trying to match medlockes ability.
the new lineup gives it there best shot, not a total waste of money, but
for me blackfoot is and always will be fronted by medlocke.
Not all original members, but still very good.......2007-06-18
Ok, typically I will slam bands for using the original name and not having the key players on board and I was prepared to do that here, but this is not bad at all. Yes, Ricky Medlocke is not on board and yes he was the primary force behind Blackfoot. They do have the original bass player (Greg T Walker) and second guitarist (Charlie Hargrett) on hand though, so that's 1/2 of the band and I guess if Skynyrd can still use that name with only 2 of the original members out of 6 or 7 on board, Blackfoot can do the same. With that said, we have not one but two other guitar players/singers: Jay Johnson, who worked with Rossington-Collins and did the Skynyrd Tribute Tour, and Bobby Barth, who has extensive experience in the music business and was the mastermind behind the band Axe. Both capably contribute vocals and guitars. As a matter of fact, Barth handles the lower register vocals and Jay the upper register vocals and that are easily able to handle the range that Ricky had on the original Blackfoot material. Having both of them play guitar only adds to the fuller sound not unlike Skynyrd, Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. Bottom line is, you can approach this as a new spin on an old band that is very good or you can stay rooted in the past and run this down since Ricky is no longer involved. For the people who do that, you're really missing out as this performance is very energetic and captures some great old music. Everything is taken from the trilogy of "Strikes/Tomcattin'/Marauder" with the exception of two songs---and some of this material, I don't think Blackfoot ever played live back in the day, so it's very nice to hear some of the old album faves. Being an old-school Blackfoot fan, I recommend even though Ricky is not involved.

Worth the money.......2007-06-14
This CD has decent quality sound, considering the year the movie came out (1971). I still love it, because I love the movie! It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they remastered the soundtrack at some point, using current technology. You will appreciate this more by owning/watching/liking the movie, which is available on DVD. The movie is now a cult classic and the DVD version includes a "director comments" option. If you are a true fan of this classic, you will own the DVD, Soundtrack and the VHS.
Best Soundtrack Ever..........2006-08-12
There's no other way to say it. This is just pure perfection... in the film, each song is perfectly suited to each scene... but alone, all the song are still great! Definitely recommended!
MUSIC.......2006-08-04
Without having any prior listening to this cd, it was an okay review. My husband and I were under the impression that there may have been some more hit songs on the cd. There was only one.

rocks hard!.......2007-08-06
on the hamburg dvd, bobby tells that MH doesnt necessarily need 3 guitarists, but points out that 2 strong players will do fine - now for the first time since the early 90s (ingram & duane roland), MH got again 2 strong guitarists...welcome back Dave! that alone justifies this release. however bobby shows clearly that he's still the main man. considering the running time of 80 minutes, i would have left out the guitar + drum solos, and included more songs. Plus, i would have preferred a real guitar battle for ex. in the song Fall of the Peacemakers, like in the good ole days. On Devils canyon, the complete solo features again only Bobby... and i wonder why they added fake crowd noise - that wasnt necessary imo. Anyway, i enjoy the show and i will watch it over & over again! keep rockin, sons of the south!
Audio & Video on the DVD are out of sync.......2007-08-01
I agree with the other reviews here...this is a pretty smoking, representative set from the modern-day lineup of Molly Hatchet. On the DVD, you'll notice within the first few moments that the visuals are out of sync with the audio. It's like watching one of the original Japanese Godzilla movies that's been dubbed in English. You know what's going on, but something's not right. It's at its worst when you see close-ups of singer Phil McCormack, or you see Dave Hlubek or Bobby Ingram hit a note "windmill-style" on their guitars about ten seconds after you've already heard the note.
It's pretty obvious that the Quality Control staff at Dead Line Records (if they actually have one) took the day off right before the DVD was shipped. Dead Line is a division of Cleopatra Records...and with this release they re-affirm their long time status as a "second string" label. Maybe Bobby Ingram needs to make a phone call to Eagle Music...they're the reigning kings of 70s/80s bands who are still rocking.
On one hand, you get a CD and DVD for the price of just the CD. On the other, the DVD is flawed, but not totally unwatchable. As far as purchasing the CD only in digital download format, yeah...I guess you could do that...but I think that fans of the band will appreciate the visuals too. Caveat Emptor...
Yet Another Great Live Molly Hatchet Collection.......2007-07-21
FLIRTIN' WITH DISASTER LIVE is yet another great Molly Hatchet collection. Like LIVE IN HAMBURG, it features both a CD and a DVD, but here, both have the exact same songs. This may make you wonder why both are included, but that's just a minor quibble, as there are many great songs here, including the cautionary "Whiskey Man", which warns of the dangers of ANY addiction (drugs, alcohol, tobacco, food, gambling, caffeine); the celebratory/cautionary title song; the inspirational "Get In The Game" and "Dreams I'll Never See"; the regional celebrations "Gator Country/Dixie" and "Son Of The South; the deceased-wife tribute "Rainbow Bridge"; and many others. We could do without the drum solo, but guitarist Bobby Ingram's solo rendition of "Layla" is quite worthy. The fact that past and present band members currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, increased funding for law enforcement, and capital punishment for kidnappers makes this CD/DVD an essential purchase for your ears, your eyes, AND your conscience.
Loud and Proud!!.......2007-07-09
This CD/DVD is a must have for any Hatchet fan, or rock fan for that matter. Blazing twin leads, slide guitar, drum solo, dixie, and the boys in the band having a blast playing live! I had no problem with the DVD picture/sound quality.
LONG LIVE HATCHET!.......2007-07-05
Sure they're not in the big arenas anymore, but that doesnt put a damper on their enormous rocking sound. One of the last southern rock legends that are still together, Hatchet, is still as power as their humble beginnings. The DVD/CD combo is an added treat!

Framed in Blood: The Very Blessed of the 69 Eyes is infectious and hard rocking! This is what music should sound like!
Excellent, But Where is Grey.......2006-09-15
This is a great compilation, but where the hell is Grey, one of they're best songs?!! I am very surprised this was not on here. 4.5 stars

Truly great -- no throwaways........2007-03-22
I'm a forty-something with pretty wide-ranging musical tastes, but a sucker for a catchy hook. My tastes in rock run to artists like Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan, Supergrass, Led Zeppelin, Beck and just about everything on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. I like to branch out with compilations to get a taste for a genre that's unfamiliar to me, as I did here. What a revelation. Every song here is great. One after another. As I put them in iTunes, I kept waiting for a so-so tune, but it didn't happen.
What is Goth (at least from these examples)? Pretty straightforward rock structure, a lot of minor keys, and very melodic. Generally quick tempos. Musically pretty sophisticated stuff. No doubt I'll be digging much deeper.
One of the best comps ever..........2005-12-27
Alright, I bought this comp after my record collection was stolen at a CD release party i DJ'd. I had albums by, and the albums featuring, most of the artist and tracks on Disc one "Goth Side" and a few disc by some of the artist on the "Industrial Side", even once Dj'd a party that "Razed in Black" performed at, but alot of the songs were new to me (don't listen to alot of industrial.) Disc 3 "Remix Side" features some great mixes, aall of these disc read like a good playlist from your local goth/industrial night.
This is probably one of the best comps I have heard and ranks up there with "Gothic Rock" Volumes 1 and 2. This is a much better choice if you are first getting into the scene, or giving as a gift for someone else as it covers the industrial as well.
Great alternative music.......2005-08-08
An exceptional recall of some great alternative music, which was created before anyone called it "Goth".
As advertised.......2005-08-02
The songs I recognized by title I already owned - they were often the reason I'd bought the original album. After getting this, I recognized many more by ear. This 3-disk set is damn impressive for the price - it bore a startling resemblance to sets played by local Goth or Industrial DJ's depending on the CD. The 3rd disc of remixes was a nice touch as well.
Good songs and well put together. The only possible improvement would be some band info on the jacket.
bummer..........2005-07-29
no real opinion on the entire disc. Good collection for goth heads. Was just hoping "Join in the Chant" by Nitzer Ebb would be the 12" remix. It's not. It's the album version.

Customer Reviews:
its amazing what you can do with two guitars and a suitcase.......2007-07-23
I first saw these two play with Heather Rae and the Moonshine Boys at the Hole in the Wall in Austin, during SXSW, and NOBODY was there. My first impression was "my god, she is SMOKIN' HOT" and then immediately thereafter I realized I had stumbled onto two of the most talented musicians I've seen in a while. The other night, I had the pleasure of seeing them again at the Continental Club in Austin opening for Unknown Hinson, and the improved sound (and the fact that I wasnt already plastered before seeing them) really showcased the talent of Danny B Harvey's stunning rockabilly-tainted guitar, and Lynda Kay's boundless energy (constantly pounding on that Samsonite suitcase kickdrum) and stunning voice. If you like traditional country and rockabilly, this is a must-have.
Very fun.......2007-04-23
This is quite exciting traditional country. The singing is quite excellent as is the guitar playing. However the production is not great by today's standards. This group deserves a better recording.
too much fun.......2007-04-22
plain good fun, with some fine guitar playing, and a creative lyric or two - with pretty fine vocals
alt.western.......2007-03-08
i first heard these two on samantha murphy's SMtv internet pod cast and immediately had to go to amazon to buy the city. i real mix of tradition western swing sounds with gritty lyrics. not to say lynda's voice is anything but smooth as silk. take a leep and pick this cd up, i don't think you will be sorry.

Manufacturer error.......2007-04-17
I received some Chopin piano music in this Sills CD case, even with the correct logo burned in.
Suspicious...
singer.......2007-01-12
Got this for an aria V'adoro Pupille. Was surprised to find tempo so different from other singers' versions, and she has many added florishes, but it is enjoyable. The recording is from a live performance so there are coughs, etc., as well as wild applause, but a nice addition.
Beverly Sills' trills..........2006-09-06
are fake. How can someone hear them and say that no other singer can match or surpass them? Love her all you wish, she used a false technique to produce the trills (as Bartoli does in her fioritura singing - exciting, but not technically accurate); Sutherland, Streich, Gruberova, and Hempel (Ponselle for that matter) executed TRUE, accurate (and quite pleasing to the ear) trills. Thank you.
The greatest Cleopatra forever.......2004-10-28
Now Beverly Sills definitely ain't a pin-up Cleo like Leonor Varela in the movie disaster from the 90ties but she was a very beautiful woman and had the voice of a sirene in those days, perfect for Handel, as perfect as can be. Her "V'adoro pupille" has to be heard to be believed, it's bursting with seductive colours. Ruth Ann Swenson could learn a thing or two from Sills here when it comes to phrasing and colouring. The "Da tempeste" is flawless, I could listen to it over and over again. Yet, why are there only highlights? Treigle&Sills are so great, they deserve more!
Ignore the ignorant basher.......2003-08-04
This JJ fellow really has a lot of nerves. Lately there's been a diva war between Callas, Sills, and Sutherland and he/she hasn't let up since. To the basher: we have every right to say that Sills is the best singing actress of this century; this is a Sills site! And we do not believe Callas is in the same league. She was a great actress but she had an annoyingly dry, coarse voice, even in her prime.
This is a fabulous live performance, very much comparable to the 1967 recording on the RCA label. I do have to say though, that some of the tempi are very slow, but then again when you have incomparable singing from Sills, one cannot wish for more. ~bash review neutralizer
