About the Artist
Bursting onto the Gospel music scene is Singer-Songwriter sensation, Tomell Brown. His smooth and soulful vocals are soothing and captivating listeners everywhere. Tomell was born on May 18, 1976 in Syracuse, New York. He now resides in Decatur, GA. Tomell is also a Minister at Refreshing Church of God in Christ. As early as 2 years of age, Tomell has been singing. At the age of 9 he began writing songs. Tomell discovered he had a unique gift after singing a solo in church at age 5. The anointing of God upon his voice moved many people to tears, leaving the church congregation astounded, standing on their feet and applauding. That performance sparked invitations to sing at churches, talent shows, and other events locally in his hometown of Syracuse, New York. Tomell has continued this trend of encore performances and has become one of the most sought after Gospel vocalists in the metropolitan Atlanta area and his demand is continually growing nationally and worldwide. Some of Tomell's major music achievements were winning the 1997 Best Soloist Award at the Southern Georgia Church of God in Christ Music Convention. As a student at Morris Brown College, Tomell has won the Student Support Services Performing Arts Award during the 1998-1999 school year and the 1999-2000 school year. Tomell has received a Certificate of Achievement Award in 1998 from the Billboard Song Contest for the song he wrote, I'm Lost Without Your Love. Tomell was a performer at the 2003 Holy Hip Hop Awards and Artist showcase and has appeared many times on local and national Christian television stations and broadcasts. Tomell was one of the 20 Finalists in the 2003 Praise Discovery Talent Showcase at the Georgia World Congress Center. Artists such as Commissioned, The Winans, Dawkins & Dawkins, New Edition, Boyz II Men, Jodeci, R. Kelly, Brian McKnight, and Joe, has influenced the fresh, innovative sound of Tomell's music. The sultry style of Tomell's vocals are reminiscent of an R&B singer serenading the most sensitive lady, but his lyrics are true to the Word of God, testifying of God's love, grace, and deliverance through personal life experiences. Tomell's main goal as a Singer-Songwriter is to encourage the youth to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He endeavors to reach those people who don't have knowledge of God and who are not in the body of Christ. However, at the same time he wants to encourage the saints of God who are in the church, young and old, to continue living holy and to be strong in this journey of life. With the release of his debut album, appropriately titled, *Soul Winner,* Tomell should succeed in winning him many souls for Jesus Christ, as well as national and international mass appeal. Finally, Gospel music has been blessed by a sorely needed breath of fresh air, the gifted and talented, Tomell Brown.

5 out of 5 stars The best vocal performance ever?.......2007-06-20

I have listened to over 10,000 songs in my lifetime and I will go ahead and say it. This is the best vocal performance in the history of recorded sound. I'm a little creeped out by the look he's giving me on the cover, but when I hear these songs, I climb to the tallest hill in Nebraska and sing songs from my favorite musicals like Chippy. I am numbed by the sheer perfection of this. Go Taylor, woo hoo!!

4 out of 5 stars A LOVELY LISTEN, BUT I WAS NOT FEELING SOME OF THE 80S STUFF.......2007-03-11

this joint was bumpin' for the most part, however, for me, i would've focussed more on their 70s material and left out a great bit of that 80s stuff. YOU SEXY THING is one of the groovinest songs i have ever heard period. i also love EMMA, the original BROTHER LOUIE, DISCO QUEEN (sampled like crazy), and others i cannot think of, dang!!!!! if you that british thing in your funk/rock music, then you will dig this for sure. if you prefer their earlier material, then find a collection that focuses on that. the one i saw omits BROTHER LOUIE, which is a no no for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jams.......2000-08-28

Classic Jams here. You Sexy thing,Don't stop it now are Dance Jams that still Slam.truly one of the 70's Good Solid Groups.Alot of Fun.it's Cool they are getting a 2nd Life.

5 out of 5 stars Classic seventies soul.......2000-03-21

It has been a long long time since I had the chance to listen to anything by Hot Chocolate, since my vinyl is all stored away in a closet. I forgot how much I missed these guys. H.C. was everywhere on the radio in the seventies, with good reason. Happily, this collection has most of their best work.

The poignant "Emma", even leaving the 'message' aside shows their vocal abilities; deep and lush. But these fellas surely could burn down the house, and did so: "Every One's a Winner" is a classic, as is the now over-used "You Sexy Thing". They jam through "Don't Stop it Now", and "Could've Been a Lady" and even "Disco Queen". One of my personal favorites is "So You Win Again" for every one of us lucky guys who has been crushed by some gal (not to be confused with the similarly titled and messaged Hank Williams classic).

Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2000-02-27

Your sexy thing! My 20 year old son heard it on a commercial. I ordered the CD for him! Nice to know our young appreciate good music, such as Hot Chocolate!

5 out of 5 stars The music is a part of every listener's being, its fantastic.......1999-06-06

I have been listening to the Hot Chocolate since the late 70s, this is 1999 and the music is still very fresh in my whole Being. It is a Gold that everyone needs to have.

5 out of 5 stars A gem - just rediscovered.......2005-12-09

Back in 1979, when the Mothership was the only place I wanted to be and only the deepest funk jams would satisfy, a friend loaned me this 2LP set. It blew me away and God knows why I didn't buy it then.

In the last two weeks I was playing my copy of an Isleys compilation featuring the title track (blown away all over again)and as the price of Winner Take All has dropped sinfully low, I dived right in. Wow - all the things said here about an underrated album are 100% true. Since the first time I heard "That Lady" in 1973, this band have enthralled me and this blissful mix of silky vocals, blistering intrumental work, hard funk and lovely ballads means the fascination will continue...

Isleys, I love you, love you, LOVE YOU!

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Winner.......2004-08-23

This album is underrated, plain and simple. Back in the day people must have been turned off because it was a double album and it was the height of disco. Well even the tracks that have some disco nuances are still funky. The first 3 songs, 'I Wanna Be With You', 'Liquid Love' and 'Winner Takes All' are pure funk while 'Life In The City' clocks in at 8 minutes and has an extended breakdown with some serious guitar riffs from Ernie. The album slows down with the mid-tempo groove of '(Can't You See) What You Do To Me?' and slows down even further with 'Let's Fall In Love' one of their best slow jams. This isn't one of their more well-remembered albums but it's just as good as '3+3' or 'Go For Your Guns'.

5 out of 5 stars A undervalued classic.......2003-12-16

While other Isley Albums get better notice, this is a hot album. I wanna be with you, winner takes all, liquid love, and Disco night are tunes that made people move back in the days!!!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated greatness..........2003-07-24

I hate to throw the word 'underrated' around, but it applies here.

I'll go further.

This is one of THE underrated double albums of the 70s.

People will now shower praise on Songs in the Key of Life and Here, My Dear, but Winner Takes All tends to be unmentioned or passed over.

Maybe it is the few disco-esque dance jams that throw people off. Era biases aside, the uptempo songs on this album are generally winners.

And the Isleys don't lose when it comes to their 70s ballads and midtempo jams. This may be the smoothest set of those songs to appear on any Isley album even if they aren't the most celebrated.

The 1-2 punch that is the loosely-combined "You're the Key to My Heart" and "You're Beside Me" is undeniable goodness.

And "Let's Fall in Love" is one their second-tier beloved jams that is only on the second-tier because there was no room on the first one!

"Let Me In Your Life" is such a solid but unknown song that I want to tie people up and make them listen to it so that they can appreciate it (and being untied afterwards).

"How Lucky I Am" is another underloved slow piece.

Most double albums from any era are slagged for one of the following reasons:

- Too much of a departure from the artist's normal sound
- Too many songs/too long/too self-indulgent/etc
- The album gets boring
- Bad sequencing

IMO, Winner Takes All suffers from none of those problems.

In addition, buying this album will introduce most casual Isley fans to several good songs that they probably didn't know of before.

It is 2nd or 3rd on my list of favorite Isley albums. (I sometimes think Harvest for the World is better and Heat is On is my choice for THE best)

AP

4 out of 5 stars A Winning Album.......2002-02-15

Solid Isley Brothers Album with there Trademark Vocals,Organ&Fire Hot Guitar Licks from Ernie Isley who still is sadly Underrated.this Band in the Studio to Me was as Bad as anyone out there during the same time period.between the Solos&Vocals you can't go wrong a Good Blend of Funk&Slow-Jams.One of the Few Acts from back in the day still on the scene.

4 out of 5 stars Some hits, some misses, but good overall.......2007-05-31

As a fanatic of both Curtis Mayfield and obscure R&B, I eagerly anticipated this. It came last week and here's the verdict.

Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) was a grossly underrated genius of Soul who was not only to Soul what Bob Dylan was to folk rock, but also attemtpted to be Chicago's Berry Gordy with his Curtom label.

Lots of good stuff here scattered among 3 Cds. The Five Stairteps (precursors to the J-5) have a number of their tunes here that are hard to find on CD, such as "I'm The One Who Loves You," "Stay Close to Me," and the lovely "Behind Curtains." A young Donny Hathaway is represented by a tune with the Mayfield singers and a 1969 duet with June Conquest (who alas didn't live up to her name when it came to the music industry). Baby Huey and the Babysitters really get things funked up with "Mighty Mighty Children." And Curtis and his Impressions are also well represented by the lovely and little known "Seven Years" as well as the bigger hits "Choice of Colors" and "This is My Country."

Can't discuss this set without mentioning Mavis Staples' underrated PIECE OF THE ACTION. This song has a soft spot in the hearts of those who saw the Cosby/Poitier film of the same name and the dance sequence that this song energized.

Of course in a set this vast, there are bound to be few clunkers, but since this is the CD age, you can easily skip over these and enjoy what's good here.

This CD is a testament as to why corporate radio needs to go. There is TOO MUCH good stuff that is not exposed to the masses. Enjoy.

Here is another terrific recording by the aptly named Amazing Rhythm Aces. This "amazing" band has recorded some of the best American music produced over the past 3+ decades. Russell Smith has, in cooperation with band mates and others, written some of his best songs for this set. The songs here compare with those on "Too Stuffed To Jump", "The Amazing Rhythm Aces", and all of the other masterpieces this band has given us. I recommend this CD to all lovers of great music. You can never go wrong with the "Aces".

THIS IS ONE OF PATTI'S BEST ALBUM.MY FAVORITES ARE OH PEOPLE, KISS AWAY THE PAIN, ON MY OWN, AND OTHERS. THIS IS A FANTASTIC ALBUM. PATTI DID A GREAT JOB ON THIS ALBUM I REALLY DO ENJOY THIS ALBUM AND I RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES PATTI TO PURCHASE THIS ALBUM. IT IS A VERY NICE ALBUM TO HAVE IN YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Patti at her best during the '80s!!!.......2004-09-07

This album still is a favorite to me! I like how the message-driven Oh People weaves into On My Own and then to the funky Something Special and to the bridge-heavy Kiss Away...,and to the no-nonsense Twisted. Patti sings in diva like fashion with her soulful voice on here. Only the last two songs don't grab me as much since there's so much solid material on here. But this album from 1986 is Patti at her best during that decade and solidified her as a well received singer to this day! Richard Perry, even after producing several successful Pointer Sisters albums and other artists, should be commmended for producing this album for Patti. I'd get that album or CD version of it again if I wanted to hear it! It's so very well done--she makes us a winner in us by having us hear it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Since Her Debut!.......2004-07-16

The title song of 'Winner In You' is pleasantly theatrical and I have plenty of fond childhood memories of "On My Own" but, once again Patti cooks best on her uptempo dance songs and there are some great ones here!"Something Special (Is Gonna Happen Tonight" and "Twisted" both shine in the same, brassy
synth-soul vein of "New Attitude" whitch is something this lady
has plenty of.Patti's "Greatest Hits" collections are recommended
highly but as albums go this and her 1977 Epic debut are the only
available full-lengh Patti Labelle albums you'll ever need!

5 out of 5 stars Don't overlook some of the tracks on this one.......2003-02-03

'Winner in You' is a great CD. Now you may be thinking, 'Why buy this CD when I can buy a greatest hits compilation?". To that I will say there are some tracks here not available on Patti's greatest hits CDs that should not be missed. Of course everyone knows 'On My Own'. But don't over look the power of 'Oh People', and the sweetness of 'Kiss Away the Pain'. Those tracks are not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars almost forgotten hero.......2001-03-02

The late Percy Mayfield wrote hit songs for Ray Charles, and he was a minor star of his own during the 1950s. He faded from sight, however, though he never stopped performing. Due to a car accident, he also had health problems which set back his career. These live recordings from the early 1980s prove that Mayfield never ever lost his touch as a singer. On these numbers, mostly slow, dark blues, he comes through as one of the most powerful storytellers the blues ever heard. His quiet, deep, rich voice virtually overpowers the listener, and his songs are masterpieces of loneliness and long lost love. Still, his warm humorous chuckle is never far away. The audience is right in Mayfield's palm here, and as a home listener, you are not likely to lag far behind... Mayfield is definitely ripe for major rediscovery, and this cd really needs to be heard.

Actually I thought I already reviewed this ablum but I will give it another shot.
I brought this album because someone told me to and I loved the first song but couldn't really follow the rest. He had some remakes of some old songs (or atleast it sound that way). I gave him 3 starts for effort. I think he has alot of potential if he could be more original.

    Product Description

Selling over 100,000 copies of the initial release, John Cruz - Acoustic Soul is now being re-issued by Quiet Storm Records. The album has been digitally re-mastered and the artwork has also been redesigned, making this familiar local favorite... Unique! From the liner notes: Island Style - The first verse and chorus were written in the winter of 94 while I was living in New York City. I was feeling homesick and missing my family, especially my Moms cooking. When I returned to the islands I wrote the Grandma verse and the slack key guitar part. Each track is introduced by John, in his own words, in a similar manner, within the full four-panel, redesigned liner notes. Already a proven winner... yet New & Improved!

5 out of 5 stars Mellow Island Sounds.......2006-06-15

Acoustic Soul from John Cruz is an amazing collection of original work and remakes - all with island style in mind. I never get tired of listening to it! "Shine On" is one of the most beautiful songs on the planet! Can't wait until a new John Cruz album comes out!

4 out of 5 stars It'll take you straight to the islands.......2005-10-14

This was my first introduction to John Cruz. Picked it up while on transit through Honolulu airport. What great good fortune! The rhythms, guitar work, lyrics, and his voice really do bring you the best of the old days when family, loves, the sea, and friends were the core of existence. I can't listen to it often enough, and I've had it for over a year. It is definitely not background music, but soothes the soul.
