Breaking singer Toni Braxton's heart is just not advisable. Whether she's writing about her own anguish or interpreting someone else's, Braxton has a way of cutting straight to the soul. It's why her signature hit, "Un-Break my Heart," was a smash, and why More Than a Woman is such a terrific album. She's angry, and she's skilled enough in R&B, pop, and soul to madly exorcise those demons. The soaring and sassy he-done-me-wrong lament "Lies, Lies, Lies"--its chorus powered by thickly layered vocals--is utterly irresistible. "Give It Back" similarly scolds a cad caught stepping out on our gal. Braxton also finds success in happiness: the lilting, Spanish-flavored "Me & My Boyfriend" is a joyful ode to being together, while the swooning, synth-juiced "Tell Me"--despite its soft, innocuous exterior--finds Braxton seducing a lover by checking off her attributes (hard body, wearing a thong) while offering a private dance. Braxton's husky voice continues to make hairs stand on end. Though she's not busting down any stylistic doors on More Than a Woman, loyalists will find plenty to praise. --Kim Hughes
Customer Reviews:
Let Me show you the Way.......2007-07-03
This is one of her finest pieces in years in my opinion the heavy hip hop sound in the introductory track just presents Toni in a fresh modern (She has been around for a while) sound and look. She's great. I still consider her my top ten favorites and she still brings her A game when others came and went, some stayed a while but couldn't keep the pace. Excellent.
Not as bad as people make it out to be.......2007-02-15
A lot of people (including Toni herself) consider this TB's worst album. I'll admit that out of all of 6 albums (Not counting remix and hits albums), this one ranks at number 6 but it wasn't that bad. Her vocals were on point. Most of the lyrics were on point. More Than A Woman is not her best album but I think it is worth owning.
..........2006-11-30
The majority of these songs are relatively good ideas, but are not executed properly. While the songs are alright, they are not strong enough to stand on their own. Toni Braxton lacks ad-libbing where it is necessary to hold your attention. A song, no matter how good, is not interesting if it lasts four minutes with the same verse-chorus-verse structure without any alterations. Some of the production is out of place and the two tracks produced by Robert Smith, Brandy's ex-husband, sound way too similar, and they are not great to start with. It sounds so ridiculously Brandy, and that is just not for Toni. The best track on here is "And I Love You." It is produced by Babyface and it shows his flexibility/versitility. He is able to fit Toni's new sound while still having some of her old school melodies and harmonizing. One can only imagine how much better this album could've been if she worked more with Baby face...
2 1/2 stars, MORE than...a Woman...........2006-08-01
Right from the beginning of this LP, a Toni Braxton fan would know that she has come out of her element with her fourth musicial effort, "More Than A Woman". She strays away from the sound she is known and loved for, and goes for a different, and worse approach. I didn't like the sound she had on this album. I am used to Toni singing ballads and mid tempo love songs, not this plethora of upbeat songs. Most of the ballads on this album, though, are good. Toni can sing a ballad, thats just a given.
The irony of this album is that she is happily married to Keri Lewis of the music group Mint Condition, but this LP contains mostly breakup songs and songs about an unhappy woman. Speaking of Keri, he did a nice job producing "Tell Me". This song is an album highlight. It samples Anita Baker's hit, "Sweet Love", and actually sounds a bit like Janet Jacksons's "Funny How Time Flies". As mentioned previously, a lot of the songs have a sad feel to them. The album's first 3 songs, "Let Me Show You the Way Out", "Give It Back" and "A Better Man" are all about an oppressed woman. "Give it Back" is a bit creative, especially the chorus, but contains a weak rap from Baby from Cash Money Records. "Hit the Freeway" was the only song released from this album, but it is so not Toni. The song didn't fit this great artist. Loon performed a lackluster rap and the production was just bland and this is not a memorable track. "Lies, Lies, Lies" is quite eerie. This song has a rock feel and it is about a woman leaving her man because of his excessive lying. Again, this song does not fit Miss Toni Braxton. "Me and My Boyfriend" had no business being done three times. 2 Pac, Jay Z, and Toni have all done this song. All of the versions are weak, so I don't know why it keeps being remade. Toni's version is the worst, though. Toni let us hear her sensual side with "Rock Me, Roll Me". I particularly enjoyed the lyrical sexual undertones although the entire song is great.
Toni Braxton is not a hit and miss artist. When she come out with new material, she gives you something to remember for years after its release. This is her most lackluster work, but even it is listenable. I understand she tried something different with this, but I prefer the Toni I am used to any dsy.

Smart Decision,Bad Consequences.......2006-06-18
More Than A Woman is an okay album. Even though Toni's old style of music is a lot better than her new style, she made the right decision by going hip hop, because by doing this, she stays with the time period. Had she kept doing her old style, it would've been even harder than it is now for her to blend in with today's era of music. Hit the Freeway is a great choice for a single, because it is catchy. Me and My Boyfriend and Lies, lies, lies aren't as catchy, but have good lyrics and good beats. She also has songs like: give it back, selfish, and always that are okay, and help keep you hooked into the album.Ultimately, her album is okay.It was just hard for her to make the adjustment.

Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07
This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

Confuzzled.......2004-01-03
While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.
An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02
American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."
This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.
Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.
The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.
more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20
I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).
I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.
I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.
At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.
The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.
delightful art songs.......2002-01-02
rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.
carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.
this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.
anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.
one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

Customer Reviews:
It's all good!.......2003-07-17
This is a fantastic collection of Purcell's greatest choral works, wonderfully sung by the Oxford Camerata. My favourites: 'Jehova, quam multi sunt' (a fine example of Renaissance-inspired Baroque choral writing), 'Lord, how long wilt thou be angry?', and the more well-known 'Hear my prayer, O Lord'. However, the entire album is full of authentic little treasures which continue to marvel. A great recording for any classical collection.
A bargain CD for lovers of English choral music.......2000-02-28
In addition to Henry Purcell's edifying choral anthems, this CD also contains his music composed on the occasion of Queen Mary's death. Listen to this music with your eyes closed and imagine the royal funeral procession to Westminister Abbey on that cold March morning in 1695 (a place that a 36 year old Purcell himself would rest 8 months later); it is an epiphany! For movie buffs, the funeral march (Z. 860A; played wonderfully by the Oxford Camerata brass) was featured in Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange". If you enjoy Purcell's works or choral music in general, you should definitely make a modest purchase and get this wonderful CD for your collection!
This is good stuff.......1999-11-12
If you like choral music, or even if you don't, buy this CD. Purcell's music is made more beautiful then ever by the Oxford Camernata. The feeling and flow of the songs effects you in many ways. This is a great CD.

Customer Reviews:
One of Top 5 Aaliyah Songs.......2004-02-12
The song "More Than A Woman" is in my top 5 Aaliyah songs. The remix is nice, although I prefer the album version. I'm so glad the singel includes the video 'cause it is one of the best music videos I've ever seen, the dance moves are superb, the whole style of the video is great.
I'm not really into One In A Million and don't understand why is it included on 90% of her singles. It is true that Aaliyah was one in a million but the song itself isn't as good, she has much better ones. Instead of it I would have preferred an instrumental and an a cappella of More Than A Woman.
Missing Aaliyah.......2002-09-06
Aaliyah was More Than A Woman. And she showed us that on her last CD "Aaliyah".This song a favorite because it's just a great song!LOL!
"More Than A Woman".......2002-05-05
This 12" import of Aaliyah's "More Than A Woman" is a great buy for fans and d.j.'s. It includes the original full-length version of "More Than A Woman"; a great Timbaland-produced track with a slight old school 80's sound. This cd also contains a video for the track (produced by Dave Meyers) and the smash hit "One In A Million", from her 1996 sophomore album "One In A Million". But the bonus to this cd definitely comes with the "Bump N Flex Club Mix" of "More Than A Woman". This is a high energy breakbeat/electro dance mix of the track. The young hip-hop diva is sure to set off clubs everywhere with this remix!
5+ She really was More then a Woman.......2002-04-18
Aaliyah will always be in my mind as a beautiful and intelligent, soulful and great role model for anyone. She really was good at singing and also at acting too. This is the last single we will hear from miss Aaliyah Houghton. "More Then A woman" is in my opinion her best single from her self titled album. "We Need a Resolution" included too much squeaks, clunks and beeps from Timbaland, and "Rock The Boat" seemed too mature for how old she really was. The beats are great and so is the enhanced video. I really like the Motor Cycle chase! Aaliyah we will miss your strong energy and soulful and lustrous voice. I know you are singing with the Greats right now in Heaven for God...but just letting you know that on Earth you will NEVER be forgotten. Aaliyah we love you. You were really One in a Million.
