Of all the great male '60s soul singers--a short list that includes Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and James Brown--only Solomon Burke still actively records. More amazing, he's produced his best full-length album with Don't Give Up on Me. It's easy to give some credit to the album's star songwriters, who include Burke fans Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, and Bob Dylan. But really it's the quality of the songs and Burke himself, one of the most versatile and charismatic singers around, that make this album so special.

The 11 songs range from the lazy, seductive plea of the title track and the gravelly gospel of "Diamond in Your Mind" to the country-soul of "Other Side of the Coin" and the civil-rights-era urgency of "None of Us Are Free." Joe Henry's production is suitably subdued, and the instrumentation--generally guitar, bass, drums, organ, and piano--is sympathetic throughout. And if you doubt that Burke is the real star in a room crowded with those folks, consider this: the two slightest tracks here were written by Wilson and Costello, while one of the best, the album-closing "Sit This One Out," was written by someone named Pick Purnell. A great album not fixed in the past or fully of this decade, Don't Give Up is a crowning achievement of an R&B pioneer who has returned to reclaim his self-bestowed title from the '60s: "The King of Rock and Soul." --Keith Moerer

4 out of 5 stars Solomon Burke.......2007-05-08

Great Blues singer. As long as he's been around, I didn't know about him until I saw him on "Breakfast With The Arts". Quality lyrics, quality voice, and good solid blues sound. This is one of those artists that you just don't want to see grow old. BB King is another. Charlie Daniels is another. "Don't Give Up On Me" is a great song with a lot of feeling and it is a great album that carries that feeling through the entire array of songs. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Comeback for all Generations.......2006-12-21

In the last 15 years we have seen some comebacks of artists that were famous in the 50's and 60's but whose careers slowly went downhill in the 80's, mostly thanks to the invention of the soul-less synthesizer.

Johnny Cash was introduced to a new audience with his 'American Recordings' and subsequent released under the same title. He was no longer the guy in black singing 'Ring of Fire' but that old guy singing Palace Music and Danzig songs.
You could say the same thing about Bob Dylan with his last three CD's.

And then there is Reverend Burke. A great career in the 60's, some mediocre songs in the 80's but with "Don't Give Up On Me" he finally has what he always claimed to posess: the title of King of Soul.

No tracks he has written himself, but songs by Dan Penn (the brilliant and passionate title track), Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan.

The instrumentation is laid-back and how it is supposed to be, as if it could be played on the street without any electricity. Burke's voice, now even deeper than it used to be, soothes us and makes the tracks written by others his. We should not give up on him, we believe he has a diamond in his mind and that his life had been not so great.

This might be one of the best real old-fashioned soul albums of the last 20 years. The King is back.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-05-19

I never heard of this artist / album until I saw it on Rate Your Music. Bought it. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Solid soulful blues.......2006-03-25

Fantastic and heartfelt production from a tremendous artist. Slower pace than some other Solomon Burke albums, but well worth the twice the price. Highly recommended for blues fans.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Give Up on Me.......2005-09-10

I got the new (2005) Solomon Burke and loved it.
I think "Don't Give Up on Me" is even better.
I particularly liked "Fast Train" and "Soul Searching".

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Bobby Gillespie and band spend much of their third album drifting 'tween side two of Sticky Fingers (acoustic blooze like "Big Jet Plane," complete with Bobby Price-like horns) and the more celebratory hits of Sly & The Family Stone ("Funky Jam"). It could conceivably be a huge send-up, but they play it with a straight face and hence should be taken at least as seriously as Lenny Kravitz or the Black Crowes. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Primal Scream CD.......2006-09-10

I consider this to be the best overall CD Primal Scream has delivered. Don't get me wrong, "Sreamadelica" is still a great CD, and there are some solid tracks on on "Vanishing Point" and "EXTRMNTR." But I view those works as more uneven, with flashes of undeniable brilliance intermixed with headache-inducing nonsense.

"Give Out But Don't Give Up," while mellower and more soulful -- and therefore inherently different from the others--is most consistently great. I realize the comparisons are a bit of apples and oranges, and the band deserves credit for covering so much ground from one CD to the next. But this CD will find its way into your listening mix over and over. It is to Primal Scream what "Laser Guided Melodies" is to Spiritualized. Their new effort, "Riot City Blues" is a close second to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe their best.......2006-06-27

I never understood why this record got such bad press. OK it came after Screamadelica which was considered ultra-important back in the day (even if I am not so sure about that). It is true this record was maybe a step backward in some ways: it was not an innovative fusion of musics but it represented an excellent exercise in classic rock. Rocks was and remains an excellent rock song, There are a few other gems on this album that remains a strong rock album.

5 out of 5 stars ...and what sound are we doing next???.......2006-04-23

Primal Scream! What do you say about a band that for each and every album they decide to do another genre? This album is an extreme directional move from screamadelica's psychedelic sounds and the indie heydey of Sonic Flower Groove and Primal Scream. This is all to do with rock (rocks, jailbird) and then some of the most beautiful ballads ever composed (I'm Gonna Cry Myself Blind, I'll Be There For You and Big Jet Plane). And also bluesy funk on Give out but dont you give up and Funy Jam. This was my first primal scream album and at the time my mates called it "an album for chewing gum"...nevermind them...this is an album to demonstrate that you dont need to release another album the same as your last chart topper...please buy this if you havent heard it...the only band to cover the Stones and still remain original!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Underrated..........2005-04-17

Yes, I got into Primal Scream a little late (with this record). I know that some of their older fans look at this as a kind of sell-out. But I just don't see the problem. Screamadelica's a cool record. So is the brutal Xtrmntr. And the Stonesy, P-Funkish Give Out...The strongest tracks are the first two (Jailbird, Rocks), plus "Funky Jam", "Call on Me" and the terrific "Big Jet Plane"...Call me a fake fan. Call it what you want. This is a really fun album...

- cRAIG

4 out of 5 stars Get a little funky now.......2005-02-20

Talk about unforeseen surprises. Primal Scream's GIVE OUT BUT DON'T GIVE UP is a major departure and improvement over their last album, SCREAMEDELICA. A bevy of superstar producers and engineers were hired to help make this album a hip shaking, soul stirring, great slab of funky rock and roll. Tom Dowd (Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Cream) and George Drakoulias (Black Crowes) took turns twisting the knobs for this delicious platter.

Also contributing on three tracks was Dr. Funkenstein himself, the one and only George Clinton. Primal Scream even let George sing lead vocals on two tracks, the fun-as-all-gitout "Funky Jam" and the super cool title track, "Give Out But Don't Give Up." Not surprisingly, these particular cuts are among the standout tracks on this album.

"Rocks" is a total gem, one of the best retro rock anthems since Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way." Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie is blessed with a remarkable set of pipes, offering up a range that suits different material that will remind the listener of everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Parliament to the Black Crowes. Very well done. Great album!

5 out of 5 stars Yet another fiery Chicago Mass Choir set.......2004-01-24

This is one of their best albums ever (although all of them are outstanding). Such classics as "Great Day," "He's My Everything," and "He's Alright" make this a superb choice for what I call rise-shine-and-give-God-the-glory times.

As usual, the band is a force to be reckoned with. Musicians will appreciate the talent displayed on this set.

And if you haven't heard CMC's version of "Lift The Savior Up," you simply don't know what you're missing.

Purchase this CD, and prepare to be lifted. Enjoy...

      Album Description

First CD single pulled from this former Sugababe's sophomore solo album Ghosts. 'Don't Give It Up' is a stunning sonic progression from Siobhan's previous work, the startling result of a collaborative "vision" from the enigmatic mind of producer/programmer James Sanger, best known for his multi-million-selling work with Keane, U2, Dido and Brian Eno. Certainly, there's nothing else out there like it: as coolly dramatic as vintage Kate Bush, as vocally ephemeral as the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser, as electro-dazzling as 'Ray of Light'-era Madonna. Features 'Don't Give It Up' plus 'Givin' In'. Parlophone.

      5 out of 5 stars I Can't Give Up Listening To Crouch.......2003-08-30

One of the greatest Christian composers of all time, Andraé Crouch delivers another awesome album. His passion and love for Jesus shines through in each track of "Don't Give Up". Always original, Crouch delivers clever contemporary music with a variety of instruments, such as saxophones and harps. Crouch's inspired vocals showcase his catchy lyrics, which deal with issues like abortion, prostitution, and forgiveness. Every song includes a definite beat that is right in rhythm with the heartbeat of God. Few music writers can combine pop styling with classic gospel, but Crouch reaches the mainstream audience and shares God's love with them while they enjoy his great tunes.

5 out of 5 stars As Usual for Andre Not Your Usual.......2003-06-04

This album is classic Crouch but not your usual gospel album. The music has influences of Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder and the lyrics are the most daring of any 70s black gospel album I've ever heard. "Hollywood Scene" is a song about an naive boy from the south, running away to tinseltown and becoming a male prostitute. "I'll Be Good to You Baby" is about abortion. All the songs are enjoyable, but I particularly enjoy the bouyant sound of "Save the People" and "Handwriting on the Wall". "Start All Over Again" wraps up the whole album very nicely. Listen and enjoy if you're a Crouch fan or just like 70's music.

5 out of 5 stars Trendsetter- Part 2.......2002-07-05

Andrae jumped out of the box again on this one. Having set the standard for others in top quality production, he broke new ground with this release. A bit too contemporary for the 'old guard' (as he always has been), this was deemed a sellout or crossover album. With hot keys from his old friend Joe Sample and an all star cast of musicians and vocalists (The McCrary's are my favorites), this album had it all. Just listen to Edna Wright scream or James Felix's chops on the chorus 'Everything's going to be allright' from the title track and you know this one has it all. Andrae's comeback release of 'Mercy' featuring El DeBarge on 'He is the Light' pays homage to this signature release. Truly a master, timeless and without peer, it is Andrae at his best!

5 out of 5 stars Two old albums of some of the best early Newgrass!.......2003-01-24

Hippie-era newgrass doesn't get more genial or good-natured than this lively outfit, which featured banjo whiz Alan Munde, fiddler Byron Berline, bassist Rober Bush and singer Kenny Wertz, along with an amorphous cast of high-powered pals such as Clarence White, Herb Pedersen and Al Perkins. The band was an on-again, off-again project that got squeezed in between the demands that various bands such as the Dillards, Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers placed on the Gazette members... Although lumped in with the whole early-'70s country-rock scene, Country Gazette were clearly more traditionally and bluegrass oriented in musical terms, even if their song selection ranged from the Louvin Brothers and Flatt & Scruggs to Steven Stills and Elton John. Fortunately for us, they managed to eke out these two fine major-label albums, which radiate a keen sense of humor, a flair for showmanship and a profound understanding of musical history which keeps these recordings sounding fresh as can be, decades down the line. A nice prelude to their later indie-label works... highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good blugrass always holds up........2002-11-08

When I was a high school kid in the mid-70s I hung out at this little acoustic instrument shop in Phoenix called "Mike's Music." Mike was a bluegrass-addicted picker with dreams of owning a music store. As store managers went, Mike was a great musician. The store didn't last long but while it did, I knew I could drive over there, play the Martins on the wall and listen to some great bluegrass music emanating from the stereo.

Mike had a real attraction to these two albums by Country Gazette. They were where I first became aware of that amazing fiddler Byron Berline, and although nearly 25 years went by between hearing these albums in Mike's music store and getting them on CD, I found that they'd lost none of their punch.

"Traitor" is my favorite of the two LPs here. The songs just seem to have a better flow with each other, but the playing on both albums is stellar.

Favorites include "Lost Indian," "I Wish You Knew," "Sound of Goodbye," and their interesting take on Elton John's "Honky Cat."

But it's all good. I've lost track of Mike, but a lot of the music he shared with me is on this CD. If you're the kind who likes to sit around pickin' on a Saturday afternoon, this is definitely a CD you should check out.

5 out of 5 stars Byron and Alan -- absolute monsters!.......1999-09-01

Sure, the two albums are a little too California for the majority of most east coast bluegrassers, but if you grew up listening to the (original) Dillards, Kentucky Colonels, and Vern & Ray, then you'll understand what drives this band. Alan Munde is just a monster -- absolutely rock solid, with licks that banjoists then, and banjoists now, can only dream of nailing. And playing off him is Byron's fiddling (with hands like hams, how the heck can he play such intricate double and triple stops?). Two of the best 70's bluegrass albums on the same CD. How CAN you lose??
