Louis and George Johnson formed the Brothers Johnson under the auspices of Quincy Jones in 1975, releasing this second album in 1977. With Quincy at the helm as producer, the duo quickly broke wide open with its debut album Looking Out for #1, which contained the No. 1 R&B smash "I'll Be Good to You" as well as the funk jam "Get the Funk Out My Face." The album's standout is "Strawberry Letter #23," their second No. 1 R&B hit, but it also contains "Runnin' for Your Lovin'," a Top 10 in R&B. Remaining tracks prove spottier, however, with significant filler between the two hits. --Tom Vickers

The album is good. "Strawberry Letter 23" however, blows everything else away! For once, I'm rating a entire disc on one song! Five stars...

P.S., I didn't know that the song "Strawberry Letter 23" was a cover. The song was originally done by someone named "Shuggie Otis?" I've gotta find the original and check that out for myself!

An Essential Slice Of West Coast Funk.......2007-01-11

One of the more underrated releases of the 1970s - Brothers Johnson, and this disc in particular - have aged very, very well, which is more than you can say about 95% of their contemporaries. At the time, I know everyone noticed how great of a funk/r&b album it was - I had the album as a kid, and the magnificent cover of Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23" was one of THE car radio hits of '77.

But I don't know if everyone noticed how THOUGHTFUL this stuff is, and the subtle sonic diversity underneath the grooves: fluid shifts from jazzy to danceable to folk/pastoral on the last tune, and through this broad musical range, the sense of rhythm and melody never fails. To pull this off and not come across as trendy, or pretentious is quite an accomplishment. These guys talent is never in question, but their musical and imaginative sense of adventure, combined with a genuine charm and sense of really enjoying what they were doing is what makes this disc sound fresh going on 30 years after it's original release.

It should be noted how specific the lyrical imagery is as well - at the time this disc was being made, times were getting a little weird, and the rather precise romanticism that emerges in the words here was - I think - another calculated move (and a good one): what might have seemed a little hippy-dippy in 1970 was a statement of calm, quiet defiance seven years later, at a time when cynicism or nihilism would have been the easier or more expected path to take - witness punk and disco - two contemporary musical movements that both produced some very interesting stuff, but also often got very soulless. All around - in words, music, groove and ambition, RIGHT ON TIME is a definite, late classic of the kind of West Coast r&b pioneered by Shuggie, Sly and Graham Central Station.

I don't know if Brothers Johnson's other releases quite hit the heights of this one, but with this release, they still accomplished far more than most.

8 tracks, 32 minutes and no filler in sight. This funk/soul/pop gem was released at the height of the disco era but doesn't sound dated, trite or embarrassing as so many LP's from that period do. Quincy Jones' pristine production along with top-notch studio players ensure consistent quality and some of the deepest, funkiest grooves on record. The incomparable Louis Johnson never ceases to amaze the listener with his brilliant bass playing (the dominant instrument here) and the Shuggie Otis classic, "Strawberry Letter 23" is remade here in a sublime, jazzy fashion with a fine vocal by George Johnson and a classic guitar break by Lee Ritenour. This is the second in a string of essential LP's The Brothers released in the 70's and is a testament to thier lasting popularity and influence. Essential.

"It was the era of the FUNK (Part II) with the smooth assistance of 'The God Father of Record Production,' Mr. Quincy Jones... I will never forget my one chance meeting with "Q" back in the '90's, in an elevator at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center based in Los Angeles, California the largest nonprofit hospital in the western United States. I believe he was visiting his ill mother at the time or maybe it was for personal reason...if my memory services me well... "AnyWay," for me it was a moment frozen in time and he was very cool and so was I too (careful not to freak him out...), so I took the one and only opportunity after our friendly encounter and greeting and asked him so what really is the key to music? He kindly replied, as he held the elevator doors for a second before exiting... "Melody my friend, Melody is KING!""

Well Produced Funk.......2006-03-14

This cd still holds up I'm happy to say. I give 5 stars to Strawberry Letter 23 and the whole cd is strong. Compares to Earth Wind and Fire. Quincy Jones produced this album and it shows. It's like jumping into a timemachine back to the late 70's, early 80's. If you like smooth, funky R&B then you should check this out. Unfortunately, they didn't do a lot more. They have one other release of new material and then a greatest hits package. Too bad. These guys seemed to have a lot of potential. Great fun. Buy and enjoy.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Of the more than 2,000 CD's in my collection (which cover many genres/musical styles: Punk, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Soul, and, of course, Reggae music), ranking within my TOP 5 is "The Right Time" by The Mighty Diamonds. Adding to its excellence is the bonus that all 3 members autographed the CD cover booklet during a 2007 visit to the Rock Hall in Cleveland.

...Okay, now that my gloating is over, let's talk about the album.

The album (circa, 1976) is a collection of early Diamonds' singles, so it's a 'hits collection' in a way. The vocal trio (Tabby, Bunny, & Judge) have been described as "velvet razor" reggae, which is to say that the smooth reggae vocal harmonies represent the "velvet" side, while the socio-political, edgy lyrical content proves "razor" sharp.

The Mighty Diamonds are reggae's version of a Soul-music trio: check out "Shame & Pride," "Them Never Love Poor Marcus," and, of course, "Have Mercy."

"I Need A Roof" is another fine example of the "velvet razor" label: "I Need A Roof Over My Head/And Bread On My Table/This Love In My Heart/It's For Everyone" is a line from the tune that is heavy, catchy & soulful all at once. The pure harmony draws the listener in, while, at the same time, provides a strong message. It's this duality that makes "The Right Time" such a complete album.

All ten tracks on this album are memorable reggae classics!! REQUIRED LISTENING (even for the casual reggae fan)!!

*As always, I have to keep hoping that the Mighty Diamonds (or whoever rightfully owns some of their early classic albums) will see the light & release the great Diamonds albums: PLANET EARTH, TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG & LEADERS OF BLACK COUNTRIES. Diehard fans are eagerly awaiting these classics on CD!!!!!

If you like Reggae, this is ESSENTIAL! Some of the best harmonies on CD!.......2006-05-07

I'm a serious Reggae fan and especially love the close harmony groups: the Abysinnians, the Gladiators, the Heptones, etc. However, this CD, hands down, is my favorite, second only to the Congos' "Heart of the Congos." However, where "Congos" is awash in Lee "Scratch" Perry's signature echo and sound effects, "Right Time" is produced very simply, uncluttered, letting the beautiful harmonies take center stage. Of course, the gorgeous singing wouldn't impress half as much if the Mighty Diamonds didn't have good material to perform. Luckily, not only do they have Grade A songs here, every track is a killer. Standouts for me are "Shame & Pride," "Right Time," and "Why Me Black Brother Why?," but, honestly, they're all fantastic. The vocals are angelic, pure bliss, and the riddims are the perfect complements. You cannot go wrong with this one. This is the Diamonds' shining moment; though they would release other good stuff, they never acheived the perfection they achieved on "Right Time." If you like this, also check out stuff from the aforementioned artists, as well as CDs from the Wailing Souls and Culture.

Don't Buy It Just Yet!.......2005-12-01

This album is without doubt top quality reggae, and it pushed the Mighty Diamonds to the top of my harmony favorites. However, the album "Go Seek Your Rights" - issued by the Front Line label, features this entire plus an additional 6 tracks [One Brother Short, Bodyguard, Let the Answer Be Yes, Sweet Lady, Master Plan, Got To Get Away], and is usually found at a surprisingly cheap price! Try to find that one first...

One other CRUCIAL thing to mention: One of the very best Toast albums I have ever heard, produced by the Godfather himself, URoy, is called "Right Time Rockers: The Lost Album". It is very difficult to find, but well worth the effort, as it contains some of the most vintage toast ever recorded. It was recorded in Channel One the same year as "The Right Time" was released (1976), but not released until 1998 by SoundSystem, and features absolutely sensational toasting, perfect engineering (Hookim), as well as The Mighty Diamonds, Tommy McCook, and the Revolutionaries (with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespear). If you're into Toast, or want to check out something truly unique to Reggae, this is one to own.

Roots all the Way.......2005-06-03

This album is essential for any roots reggae fan. The Mighty Diamonds are a feast for the ears and classic roots. The cover may throw you off a bit as it did me, but, once you get past the ultra-lame cover, the album is total magic. Very spiritual head-candy.

Incredible.......2004-12-04

I love reggae music and it seems that every time i buy a reggae cd my expectations are so high that no matter how good it is I'm a little let down. Until now that is. This album is simply fantastic. It definitely belongs in the same category as classic reggae albums like Marcus Garvey, Satta Massagana, and Heart of the Congoes, and in my opinion it actually eclipses all of them.

If you're one of "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, you'll know that I love Otis, and he is one of my six all-time favorite electric blues guitarist's. My prior reviews of his CD's, all have exemplary reviews. But this CD, fails two of Shaq's critical tests. First, the volume and clarity of this CD is terrible. I had to turn up the sound on my stereo louder than on any prior reviewed CD. Second, there are a total of 10 songs on this CD, and the total running time of the entire CD is 40 minutes. So as Shaq always says: "You can't get da blues in 3-4 minutes. Summary: If you're the type of person who likes to turn your portable CD player up to it's highest volume, and sneak up behind someone you're stalking, and not have them know you're behind them, this is the CD for you! Playing this CD at its highest level won't bother the librarian, or your neighbors.

An Essential Blues Recording.......2007-01-01

Otis Rush is one of the greatest singers and guitarists in the history of the blues. "Right Place, Wrong Time" is his unmistakeable masterpiece, far surpassing the Cobra recordings, his initial reputation was built on, and setting a standard he unfortunately never quite reached again. Over ten songs (four of which are originals) he conveys a lifetime of sadness, pain and passion through his tasteful guitar playing and soulful singing. When he sings "they say there's someone for everybody/ Ooooh I wonder where in the world is the one for me," on the title track its the poetry of loneliness brought to life. The final song "Take a Look Behind" is one of the most moving songs about the regret over a life badly lived in all the blues. There isn't a dud on here though. Every track is a thing of beauty.

I first bought this album on vinyl in the 80s and nearly wore it out. The CD I replaced it with continues to get plenty of air time on my home stereo. No blues collection can be complete without this disk.

Right place, right time.......2006-12-11

I heard this record on the telly. Channel 18 it was, a public access outfit on Long Island who when The Simpsons aren't on are absolutely the best thing on the box. See, what they do is put out a round-the-clock bulletin board of upcoming community events but they back this up with entire albums, often double albums, chosen by the dudes what work there. Each record plays for a couple of days at a stretch too so you can miss it a bunch of times and still catch up. They've even got a screen with the date, time and temperature--as I said, prime time television. These old geezers are free to broadcast just about anything that takes their fancy and mostly it's not too crappy although once they played Hank Snow and I had to take up cycling just to get out of the house because really Hank Snow, I mean that sap's the Andrew Llyod Webber of country music, isn't he? I sent an e-mail to the guy in charge of this gig complementing him on their choice one night of early Charlie Parker--what I don't know about jazz could fill a warehouse but this bird is the spring in wintertime--and the felly wrote back an actual letter in which he described in the most amiable manner how they do things down at Four Village Studio. Tastes there run to older acoustic and electric blues, rhythm & blues, jazz and, like I said, lots of cowboys. Over the last several months as a for instance I've watched, usually from my bed, the following compact disks: Long John Hunter's Ride With Me, Texas blues tailor made for a Saturday afternoon. I own this record now on account of buying it there recently because it's just that good; Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding where he sings that song about Saint Augustine--as perfect a number as that man ever rolled. I love Dylan, his Chronicles are stupendously cranky and funny and I for one am eagerly awaiting volumes two and three. I didn't think much of David Crosby until I read this book but his crack after the Princeton debacle is a thing of beauty; A Junior Parker compilation which I'm pretty certain I remember not minding one bit; Celtic Solstice by Paul Winter and Friends, a processed slab of Irish cheese that made me want to fly into O'Hare International Airport and drink a lump of pints in The Green Potato; the first two albums by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, a double CD and Jehesius H. Horselips just a mongo kablammo twofer--red barn blues and on disk two the incomparable Elvin Bishop crooning some serious voodoo on Never Say No; and this record here by Otis Rush, searing big band electric blues, the perfect prescription for shutting up shop on a Sunday night. The thing about this record is that all the good bits--lead guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and brass--come through on their own but somehow stay together in a right snazzy arrangement. It's like one of those glass clocks you often find on mantlepieces where you can clearly see the whole gizmo actually ticking but in the wind up you still get the right time. I own this record now too so I do on account of it also is just that good.

Right Place, Right Disk.......2004-10-15

If Rush had only ever recorded this single disk his place as a Chicago Blues great would have been secured. Add to this his incomparable late 50's sides for Cobra and you have a selection of the greatest West Side recordings ever made.

'Right Place, Wrong Time', is quite simply the best straight blues recording made during the 1970's, bar none. Rush is on fire throughout, whether delivering wracked slow blues or up tempo shuuffles. He plays and sings with incredible passion and feeling throughout; constantly striving for the next lick or turn of phrase which might take these songs to a new level. The backing band are never fussy, the horn section restrained, the production sparse and tough.

Highlights include the brilliant original 'Right Place, Wrong Time' and a definitive reading of Albert King's (Lets have a) 'Natural Ball'. Rush makes 'Lonely Man' his own and manages to deliver 'Rainy Night In Georgia' as a first rate blues ballad.

These recordings carry none of the excesses that blight many of his later recordings, but rather capture Otis delivering at the very peak of his considerable powers.

A guitarist's guitarist.......2004-07-02

From a fellow guitarist's perspective, this album is a masterpiece. The well-placed silence between mesmerizing, shimmering guitar licks is deafening. Otis is masterful at telling a story or setting a mood with the confluence of his anguished singing, espressive guitar-playing, and impeccable timing. What sets him apart from other, perhaps flashier, guitarists, is the patience he shows while telling a story---i.e., the spaces between guitar playing, the patience in holding a note. His phrasing on the guitar is simply hypnotic. One of his secrets is that he puts on a silky-smooth vibrato while deftly bending the string---a difficult task for many.
I wish more current blues musicians played like this---less busy noise going-on,...
His other indispensable studio album is "Cold Day in Hell," which has even sparser, intense playing, and perhaps a better, upfront tone.
For a great LIVE album of Otis, I would suggest TOPS, or else LIVE IN EUROPE.

Sound Track to your summer.......2007-07-24

Hepcat is a great American ska band. These guys have it going on and this albums grooves from the openning intro right through the closing number 'Open Season is closed'. The band is tight, the vocal harmonies are great, and they mix of styles from ska to rock steady to Carribean whatever is just good, good fun. Sound quality on this album is excellent. This will be on of those CD's that will note leave your player for weaks. Buy it and enjoy.

Late Night Video.......2002-01-26

I was flipping through the channels one night and flipped past a Music Video. Something about it made me switch back. It was the Video for Hepcat's "No Worries". By the end of the Video I was hooked on the song. I spent the next several days trying to find the CD. I finally found a record shop in Redbank New Jersey that had the CD.
I was shocked they even knew who Hepcat was. I soon found out that this was one great band. I'm still addicted to "No Worries", and can't help dancing and singing when I hear it, but the rest of the CD is excellent also. This is one Cd that is well worth it's price.

Never leaves the CD deck.......2001-03-04

This album is definitely my favorite out of my collection. Its soulful melodies, talented instrumentals and lighthearted lyrics will brighten up your day. This album also has many instrumentals, which is my favorite aspect of Hepcat's music. Tommy's Song, Pharoahs Dream, and Baby Blues are the ultimate relaxation songs! So go and get this album, play it on a sunny day and drift away to the shores of Kingston and Montego Bay!

Synthpop with Human Soul.......2004-01-27

Austria's contributions to modern music have been dubious at best. Most notorious amongst them was Falco, a club-hopping clown, who, in the era of Reagan, Thatcher and a divided Europe, forged a laughable link between the cheesy synthesizer doodlings of 80's techno and the brilliance of an 18th century prodigy who played for the court of Salzburg. While the laptop-pop collaborators of Mika hail from the same homeland, they are not plagued by the same over-the-top pomposity and delusions of grandeur that prompted the new wave jester to pen "Rock Me Amadeus."

They do, however, share his love of the synthesizer, especially the loud, moody and aggressive one that propelled most dance music in Europe during the era of denim, day-glo and the feathered, faux-hawk mullet. Fortunately, Mika comes from a better stock than most of those musicians and understands the best electronic songs have a human soul. Right Place, Right Time is drawn from the same synthesized roots as albums from Human League and Depeche Mode. But while DM's landmark Violator combined the majesty of spacey techno with the melancholy feelings of resignation and rebirth that inform post-punk, Mika fuses digital bliss with soulful pop in a way that at its best echoes the Pet Shop Boys and at its worst mimics modern downbeat maestros such as Royksopp, Plej and Ralph Myerz with the Jack Herren Band.

"Trampolin" is Mika at the top of its game. A big bass-drum beat wrapped in a driving synth riff propels forward a wistful chanteuse with a slight german lilt in her gentle voice. The track has a retro feel recalling the smoky, strobe-lit confines of an eastern European discotheque, circa 1986. Songs like "From Now On" and "Travelling Not Hunting" offer similarly nostalgic experiences, with enough lazy funk to make them suitable for today's chillout sessions. The more thoughtful and pensive "My Opinion Never Sleeps" goes in another direction, a nod perhaps to the softer side of new wave and the more recent organic movement as represented by Manitoba or M83.

Where Right Place, Right Time falls flat is on tracks like "Masquerade" and "Suga" that lapse into generic downtempo. There is already too much of this kind of music out there, and, without the European-flavored, synthpop spin of Mika's best material, it's just not good enough to be vital in a crowded field. Lyrically, Mika is also disappointing. Songs like "I Am Looking Through You" ("Tell me why don't you treat me right/Love has a way of disappearing overnight") are painfully predictable, while others such as "Travelling Not Hunting" ("Always check if everything's okay/Always check things when you travel") are downright odd. Few lyrics compliment the mood set by the instrumentation. Any artist reaching back to new wave should recognize the role good songwriting played in that musical movement (imagine synth-pop classics like Human League's "Don't You Want Me?" or the Eurythmic's "Sweet Dreams" without the vocal tracks). Alas, it's a lesson unlearned by even the best electronic artists of today.

Right Place, Right Time is a decent CD. None of the songs are bad, there is a consistent mood throughout, and remixed versions of "Trampolin" will probably make their way onto the better compilations discs this year. However, Mika fails to live up to the potential of its strongest tracks. This could be the group that rescues rocking, European-style synthpop from its vulgarization at the hands of electroclash hacks like Fischerspooner and Peaches. Mika just needs dual doses of the ambition and audacity that drove their deceased Austrian forbearers -- Mozart and Falco.

The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

Musically speaking, there are few events as highly anticipated as the venerable Dr. John, performing "live" in New Orleans. Perhaps the greatest living musician from the Crescent City, the Doctor's hometown appearances always prove to be full-scale celebrations of New Orleans culture and people. Add Mardi Gras night at Tipitina's into the mix and the stage is set for that intangible X-factor to enter the musical equation. Proof of that resounds on, Right Place, Right Time: Live At Tipitina's Mardi Gras '89, capturing the one and only New Orleans Night Tripper, Dr. John, on Mardi Gras night 1989 at the hallowed Big Easy music venue, Tipitina's.

Opening to the introduction: "Ladies and gentleman, Mardi Gras '89 here at Tipitina's, The High Priest, The Night Tripper, Dr. John!" The good Doctor blasts into the "jailbird beat" of "Junco Partner." It's a full-tilt boogie based on Dr. John's "steady comin' at ya" piano. Joined by an all-star NoLa band, including Tommy Moran, David Barard, Herman Ernest III, Trazi Williams, Amadee Castanell and Charlie Miller, they follow with "Renegade." The version is highlighted by a fiery Dr. John sermon. It's vintage Night Tripper.

Mardi Gras wouldn't be complete without voodoo. "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" sees to that. The audience's elation is audible. As the evening proceeds, Dr. John keeps the music coming with stand-out numbers like "Black Widow," "Kinfolks," "Let The Good Times Roll," and "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying." Tipitina's hits the stratosphere as Dr. John delivers rave-up renditions of the show stoppers, "Wang Dang Doodle" and "Such A Night." As the music fades, it's hard not to think of New Orleans in better days, but like a well-timed postcard from the past, Right Place, Right Time keeps the spirit of the magical city alive and well.

Decent Dr John CD.......2007-08-02

This *is* a Dr John CD, and most all of his stuff is good, but since it is a recording of a set done for tourists at Mardi Gras, it is a set aimed at a bunch of tourists at Mardi Gras. He's not exactly phoning it in, but every song on the CD can be found in a better version elsewhere.
On the other hand, if you're new to Dr John, then this might be a great place to start. This might well be a good CD to give as a gift to someone unfamiliar with Dr John and/or the New Orleans sound. I have played it some as background while I do stats. It's nice to listen to, but doesn't involve my attention enough to mess up my stat work.

RIght Place, Right Sound.......2006-05-10

Dr. John is at his best when he doing what he does best, being a barroom piano player. The sound here is fairly clean. His piano playing and the background musician is what makes this album works. It have energy and it is fun. It is very hard to listen to and not end up tapping your toes to the music. I am sure it will never show up on a list "to die for" or Music awards. It is what it is, a great piano player, playing.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi

The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!

Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02

Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.

She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.

She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.

Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.

"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.

Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.

She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.

Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27

Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!

I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!

Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10

... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry!
