3 out of 5 stars Keith's pre-Disco/Soul years.....Gospel!.......2006-03-28

Another example of how thorough and knowledgeable the Japanese music reissue companies have been. No question Keith was a talent....gone too soon. Which old-school music aficionados are not familiar with Keith's 1977 club and radio classic "You Know You Want To Be Loved (Just Like This)", on the "Physical Attraction" album? The record was played to it's own legend in dance clubs around the world. The 12" single version is required "role-call" in an old-school DJ's record collection! As with many soul & r+b performers who made it "big", whose music roots and background sprung from the church, so did Keith's. Prior to Keith's two, latter 70s secular albums, which have always been sought after by soul/dance record collectors, to the extent the Japanese reissue companies initially reissued both on cd and vinyl by the early 90s in Japan, there was this, his first album release. The two secular albums, "Keith Barrow" (which is currently availible on cd worldwide), and "Physical Attraction" (which requires deeper digging), both contain some great music, with the Philly touch! "Teach Me (The Ways Of Love)", "Didn't You Know You'd have to Cry Sometime", "Physical Attraction", amongst others, is some very good music. Perhaps, not as much in the U.S., but in England and Japan his music was highly sought after, to the extent that the Japanese even reissued this album, originally released on the Jewel label, the gospel lp "Oh, Freedom". It's a gospel record. Keith's rawer, non-commercially polished, gospel began roots, come through here. The album does have it's rich moments, and I've played my album more than once. The original album is a collectible album (many, many Keith Barrow fans, who loved him and his music, sought/seek), sells for more than the price of the cd. Old-school original gospel albums are sometimes even harder to locate than their secular counterparts, and are also impacted by the rules of supply/demand pricing. Keith's body of work was excellent, he was a talent! Record collectors who collect Keith Barrow, collected all three albums. Japanese reissuers made all three availible.

1 out of 5 stars Complete Waste of Money.......2004-08-12

I'm not really sure what music genre this guy fits under, but this CD was NOT what I expected. The price alone was crappy. The only reason I purchased this album was because it had the song "He aint heavy...he's my brother." Unfortunately this guy's version of that song doesn't do him much justice. Unless you know the style of Keith Barrow, I would recommend against purchasing this item.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Talent Gone Too Soon ..........2006-03-17

Thank God for the gift of recorded music. The late Keith Barrow, a wonderful and somewhat overlooked seventies soul singer, was one of the finest vocalists of his era. With a falsetto as smooth as silk and a $10 million smile, Barrow is one of those great singers who bubbles under the surface of the exhalted, a major talent who never evolved into anything more than a minor star. This is a shame, since his small body of work is quite engaging. This, his Columbia Records debut, was recorded in Philadelphia and produced by Bobby Eli. Surrounded by Philly's finest session players and vocalists, Barrow turns out an album that could easily stand next to any Philadelphia International Records product of the day. Though his voice is not fully developed here, the record shows more of his vocal range than later efforts, allowing him to move through the material with youthful abandon. The minor hit "Mr. Magic Man" is spritely Philly disco, and the bouncy "I Put the Twinkle in Your Eye" is also quite a pleaser. But the essence of the singer's voice is in the ballads, particularly the beautiful "Teach Me (It's Something About Love)" (later recorded by Blue Magic) and "Precious," both of which give the first inkling of just how moving his upper register could be. While his second Columbia set, the first-rate "Physical Attraction" was his finest hour, this self-titled major label debut is a welcome addition to any serious soul collection. It breaks my heart that we were robbed of Barrow's voice when he was just 29. Fortunately, the voice was captured for all of us to enjoy, even if it was for just a few short years. I can't say it enough - thank God for the gift of recorded music.
