****1/2 - not all of the best. But what's here is great.......2004-10-18
This 14-song compilation is not everything you could ever want from acoustic country blues duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. A couple of their live albums, like the two December, 1961 concerts captured on "Sonny & Brownie At Sugar Hill" and "Backwater Blues" respectively, are at least as good as introduction, but there is certainly nothing wrong with what is here.
There is a notable lack of good, career-spanning Sonny & Brownie-compilations, and even this August, 2000 disc is a bit on the short side considering that a CD has room for 80 minutes of music. But "Absolutely The Best" is definitely the best single-disc collection there is, and songs like "Walk On", "I'm A Stranger Here", "Dirty Mistreater", and the lesser-known but equally enjoyable "Po' Boy" are all among the duo's best. Indeed, the first two both rank among the all-time acoustic blues classics, and the combination of Sonny Terry's raw freight-train harmonica and gruff vocals and Walter "Brownie" McGhee's softer, more melodic approach guarantees lots of great moments.
"Absolutely The Best is an entertaining, thoughtfully chosen compilation, and if you get this one along with the two live albums I mentioned earlier, you'll pretty much be set!
Well, alright...there is "Live At The New Penelope Café", too, of course. And "Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry At The 2nd Fret".
But this is still a great place to start!
Absolutely!.......2001-03-30
This re-mastered version contains some of the finest riffs from Sonny. The quality of the sound is unparalleled. Accompanying Sonny and Brownie on 3 tracks are Lightnin' Hopkins and Big Joe Williams. Tremendous enthusiasm and great teamwork! Sonny was born in my adopted hometown. Probably the best product that this city produced.

Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee Lighten Up A Day.......2006-09-10
This is a fantastic album, plain and simple. I won't get into the debate as to whether or not it is bluesy, or more commercial than the rest of their stuff (to which I have not had a chance to listen), because it is simply a fun album.
Stand-out tracks on the album are "People Get Ready", the electrifying instrumental "Sonny's Thing", "The Battle is Over", and "Big Wind". However all of the tracks are great, and well paced. The album winds down perfectly with "On the Road Again", a bit of banter between Sonny & Brownie, interspersed with a recurring lyric.
The album makes me want to go out and buy more of their material, and I can recommend this across all age groups. Definitely a must-have.
You People Are CRAZY.......2006-03-23
This is one of the very first blues records I found in my dad's record collection when I was about 14. Yes it's not straight delta blues and yes it has some white guys playing/singing on it. This was Sonny and Brownie's introduction to white american blues fans in the early 70's and it worked. This record is a classic and totally worth the price of admission for the very last track of them telling road stories. Also their version of People Get Ready and Sail Away are near perfect.
When I Met Brownie McGhee shortly before he passed away, he told me this was his favorite record he ever made. He thought this was the one he would be remembered for - so do yourself a favor and buy this amazing album.
The Black Boys.......2006-03-03
Sunny & Browne. To paraphrase, "This is it". Two old boys from `Bama.
When Bob Dylan came to San Francisco in "72. He acknowledged Sonny & Browne as one of his inspirations. I'm not sure who the others were.
They're older than dust. One of them is blind and the other one justifiably uses a cane.
Buy this and you'll shake your head. Such sweet music, "Oh, the sun's gonna shine on my back-door one of these days."
They don't get along but that's another story. How can two guys sing together for 35 years and not "get along"?
Bring it on home.......2005-12-02
I bought this album on a discount cassette tape in the early seventies in Brisbane - unheard and thinking how cool I would be having such music. 35 years later and a lot wiser I have come to realise that somethings just outlast time - one of those being quality artists. This album represents, for me anyway, a time when things were less complicated and the music was for the music's sake. Depressing piece of reminiscing? No way - a celebration of how fortunate I was to stumble on these unheralded guys (In Australia at least) and now to trip over the cd while surfing the 'net in China. If you haven't heard this album buy it and rejoice!
Authentic Legends Are Rare.......2003-09-04
Sonny and Brown are authentic legends and I share the amazement of a previous reviewer that they were not more highly regarded as such by the world at large. This was the first album of S&B that I heard when I was around 12 and I switched onto it immediately, it is warm, rich, and pure good vibe blues. As well as the pairs Guitar and harp, it features bass and drums. I love their version of 'sail away', it might seem a strange cover at first if you listen to Newmans version, but they just do it so well. 'People Get Ready' and 'Bring Out The Boogie In Me' are standouts.
After I heard it as a kid I went out and found another Sonny and Brown album, the double 'California Blues' which I also loved, especially when they sang harmonies, man, that defined the blues for me, so raw and beautiful and real. These guys were the real thing and I think they need to be ranked as highly as John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson. One day I believe they will be. Recommended with full conviction.

Few blues partnerships were ever as successful and satisfying as the union of Sonny Terry's down-home harmonica work and Brownie McGhee's polished guitar lines. This generous, 18-tune live session catches the late acoustic blues brothers in their physical prime and at their musical best, rolling through an energetic set of conversational blues with casual virtuosity and seemingly telepathic interplay. Terry, a stone-cold traditionalist, contributes a raw-boned, backwoods feel with his heavily textured singing and harp solos while the modern McGhee's smooth vocals and clean picking provide a perfectly compatible counterpoint and complement. Either artist could carry the show by himself, but when the divergent styles musically intertwine they create a wonderful blues synthesis unlike any other the blues has known. The dynamic duo jumps right in with a reconfigured rendition of "Sittin' on Top of the World" and doesn't let up until the end. With Terry whooping and hollering between harp breaks and McGhee opening songs with comic asides the session is an unusually personable one. It's all undeniably authentic and eminently enjoyable, as well as positive blues proof that on very rare and fortunate occasions the whole is much greater than just the sum of the two parts. --Michael Point

Great CD.......2007-01-17
I would recommend this to any lover of the blues, great guitar, vocals and harmonica, totally cool!
One of the best Terry/McGhee-albums.......2003-12-28
A fine companion to the classic "Sonny & Brownie At Sugar Hill", this is a great buy for those who treasure Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee's brand of no-nonsense porch-style get-down blues.
The duo performs old warhorses like "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", "Key To The Highway", and "Careless Love", and they change "Sittin' On Top Of The World" to "Climbin' On Top Of The Hill, which doesn't make it anymore interesting, but even though the material is not always particularly original, the performances are sincere and spirited, and this CD includes great renditions of two of the duo's very best songs, "Walk On" and the classic "I'm A Stranger Here".
The clarity of the recording and the singing is pure as the driven snow, with no distortion or compression, and while "Backwater Blues" doesn't quite match "Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee At Sugar Hill" or the great, raw "Live At The Penelope Café" album for pure grit, it has more than enough highlights to make it worth your while. Fans of the duo should not pass this one by.
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee/Backwater Blues.......2003-08-13
This Backwater Blues CD is excellent. Not a bad song on it. These two were truly masters of this style of Blues. My favorite song on this CD is Louise, but I feel this is truly one of the best examples of their work.
From a man who loves the blues:.......2001-09-03
Friends, you cannot find old-school blues better than Backwater Blues. Sonny & Brownie's strained partnership has produced many excellent recordings, of which I believe this is the best. This album is the way the blues were meant to be played: just the simple, old-style tunes; just two men, two microphones, a guitar, and a harmonica. No fancy electronics, no prettyboy singers, just ol' Backwater Blues. If that's the way you like your blues, then get this album, sit back on a hot summer day, and play it all the way through!

Essential Blues For Both Long-Time Fans and Neophytes.......2007-06-06
In the early 1960's San Francisco had a remarkable two block section called the Broadway strip. Here one could find clubs featuring most every ethnic variety of music - except the blues. When Sugar Hill opened in May of 1961, the void was filled. Terry and McGhee had a following in the Bay area from their concerts but now blues fans could see them in a club setting, which let their talent, authenticity, and charisma shine more brightly.
The songs on this disc are all originals (I Got A Little Girl, however, is quite similar to Robert Johnson's I Got A Woman) and, though the duo had played in Europe and many big US cities, show how they dug deep into their souls as they continue to inovate and make each song better. Sometimes the songs have a more contemporary feeling, other times it sounds like they were playing like they did as young men (at the time of this recording Terry was 50, McGhee 47).
The sound quality of the disc is outstanding. Many live recordings have too much audience and background noise. On this disc that noise is kept to an absolute minimum. Fantasy Records, which released the majority of Creedence Clearwater Revival's LPs, remastered this in 1991 and audiophiles will not be disappointed. The sound quality rivals - surprisingly - vinyl.
Terry and McGhee are a duo that sound like more. If you've never heard them one listen is all it will take to make you a fan. This is traditional blues at its finest.
Great CD.......2007-01-17
These guys are great together, get this CD and enjoy the blues live the way it's supposed to be enjoyed!
At Sugar Hill.......2005-09-22
Sugar Hill was an upscale blues joint in San Francisco, and Sonny and Brownie played it just 6 months after it opened, this CD being the results of that engagement. And it's a beauty. Often on record dates with these two giants, Brownie takes most of the vocals, with Sonny singing 2 or 3 songs; on this one, Sonny sings just as much as Brownie. (Early in their career Brownie once told Sonny that if he wanted half the money he was going to have to sing, not just play harmonica.) Sonny is an old-time blues singer, preferring older forms, traditional verses, all done in his raspy, unrefined voice. Brownie is smoother in voice and likes to experiment a bit with the blues form. For example, BORN TO LIVE, sung by Brownie, is 32-bars long, with a bridge, though it's drenched with blues feeling. WORRY, WORRY, WORRY also is slightly different, and includes a "whomp" at the end of each phrase. Sonny sings JUST ABOUT CRAZY, which sounds very much like a work song, while I FEEL ALRIGHT NOW is a secular spiritual. Both men are in excellent form here. Blues fans should find a lot to love on this CD.
Another great live date with Sonny & Brownie.......2004-10-17
This December, 1961 recording captures Sonny and Brownie at the famous Sugar Hill nightclub in San Francisco.
It ranks among their best albums, alongside "Backwater Blues" and "Live At The New Penelope Cafe", and both men perform some of their best songs.
Brownie McGhee's melodic "Born To Live The Blues" has the audience clapping along, and the swinging "Keep On Walking", the terrific set-closer "Sweet Woman Blues", and Sonny Terry's energetic "Just About Crazy" are also among the highlights.
But that could be said for almost the entire album, actually..."Sonny And Brownie At Sugar Hill" is one of the duo's best original albums, even without classics like "Walk On" and "I'm A Stranger Here" (those can be found on "Backwater Blues", which is sort of a companion volume to this one, having been recorded just a week later at the same venue).
Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee split the lead vocals about equally, and Sonny plays his characteristic sturdy harmonica and sings gritty backing vocals on most of Brownie's songs (listen to the wonderful tough folk/blues shuffle "Baby, I Got My Eye On You" for a perfect example).
Fans of the so-called Piedmont blues genre - or just acoustic country blues in general - should go for this fine album right away. It captures all of what made Sonny & Brownie so great.
An overlooked classic?.......2003-03-11
This live album captures a pair of legends at their best. Sonny and Terry fueded through their long careers but perhaps those very emotions fueled their amazing energy on these tracks. If you in any sense consider yourself a fan of the blues, you *must* own this album.
Best line:
(Tie)
"Have to take your Christmas in your overalls"
"Rocks was my mother and father's pillows"
"Hooray, Hooray, this woman is killing me"
Best guitar:
"I Feel Alright Now"
Best Harmonica:
"Born To Live The Blues"
Best Sonny "Whoop":
All of them ;)
Tune That Is Impossible Not To Get Stuck In Your Head:
"Keep On Walking"
(Well, actually just about every track)
Curious factoids for the Brownie McGhee fan -- Brownie in his later years had a bit of an acting career. Brownie played Toots Sweet in Angel Heart and appeared and played some wonderful guitar on an otherwise truly dreadful episode of Family Ties.

Good stuff - but could have been better........2002-07-01
The music to Angel Heart was a key asset to the film -- departing from the book on which it was based, the film takes the viewer to New Orleans midway through, and this provides a valuable texture to the story.
The music on this album is good, and it is probably worth a purchase - but I have to mark it down because of the glaring ommision of two of the best pieces of music from the film.
First, the signature "Soul on Fire" by LaVern Baker, which is simply the most memorable song in the entire film. Haunting, longing, beautiful on its own -- the song takes on a new character in the context of the film. Fortunately, you can pick this song up on any LaVern Baker compilation.
Sadly, the other great song left off here is a funky little Cajun/Voodoo number by Dr. John, listed as Zuzu Man in the movie credits, but I have been unable to get my hands on the song anywhere. He seems to have multiple versions of the song, and the version from the film is elusive.
The absence of these two songs, along with a bit too much of the films dialogue, overshadow what is otherwise a memorable soundtrack. Probably only for the rabid fans of the film.
What's that tune you're singing?.......2000-12-22
One would probably not be able to fully appreciate the Angel Heart soundtrack without seeing the movie, but hearing it afore will probably serve as an additional incentive to see the film. Director Alan Parker is known for his imaginative and inventive use of music in his films. As far as I'm concerned, Angel Heart is one of the finest examples of the use of music in films. The main character of the film, private detective Harry Angel is hired to find '30s crooner Johnny Favorite, his own alter-ego - something he gradually discovers, to his own horror. Says Parker: "In the script I had made Johnny Favorite's 30's hit pivotal to our story and I wanted it to haunt the movie as it had haunted Harry. From a mountain of 78's I chose "Girl of my Dreams" which was nostalgically familiar but not too connected with any one artist. Trevor Horn [composer, arranger and conductor of the original music] cleverly wove the old theme into his new atmospheric score and had the brain-wave of using the brilliant young Courtney Pine for the sax solo's." Cleverly indeed! And chillingly effective. Harry Angel whistles to himself "Girl of my Dreams" and as he discovers more about Johnny Favorite, the song and the main theme become more and more elaborate and complete, and eventually in one of the scenes the shy piano rendition of the theme gets orchestral backing as the mystery reveals itself to us... impressive. However, at less than 38 minutes, I find it unforgivable that Rourke's whistling at the beginning of his search and the original 78 single, at the end of it, are not included. Horn's orchestrations and sounds were synthesized on synclavier and for a moment I'd wished he had used the real orchestra instead. Overall however, this is an outstanding soundtrack to an excellent movie.
HAUNTING.......2000-04-18
Although I usually find the inclusion of dialogue on a soundtrack to be intrusive, that's not the case here. Luckily it is not too overdone. The compositions by Trevor Jones and the sax of Courtney Pine bring back all the haunting beauty and terror of the film. There are no throwaway screeching scare tracks. At under 40 minutes, it is a beautiful rendering of a sinister mood that can be listened to again and again. More than a decade later, one might say the film doesn't keep it's "mystery" very well hidden but the music has held up. It's a superior example of a composer's ability to make a good film great and for that reason, I can watch it again and again. Note however, I could not watch the film without its score but I can spin the disc constantly. Alan Parker was a genius for choosing to go with atmosphere rather than musical hysterics. Never have the blues been so unnervingly hypnotic.
Ever feel like selling your Soul?................1999-03-30
ONe listen to this album and you'll be trasported into the middle of South Rampart street, New Orleans.. Even though the sax sounds slightly dated, the rest of the atmospheric background sound more than makes up for it. The two blues numbers are great while the dialouge just adds that something extra. And lets face it. Who doesnt want to hear Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro converse in the middle of a Catholic church? One negative: OVERUSE OF THE HEARTBEAT!
a very sinister and beautifull soundtrack from a great film........1998-12-18
this soundtrack is atmospheric and moving. It combines dialouge from the film and strange sounds as well as some beautifull pieces of jazz.If you enjoyed the film this is a great cd to listen to on cold rainy nights.

This is the mother lode, 10 full discs of the great hard-bop trumpeter Clifford Brown recorded at the peak of his powers for Emarcy Records in 1954-56 leading up to his tragic death in a car crash at the age of 25. Start with his first quintet recordings with drummer Max Roach, pianist Richie Powell (Bud's younger brother), bassist George Morrow, and underrated tenor saxophonist Harold Land, including the great readings of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and the Brown originals "Daahoud" and "Joy Spring." Then it's on to the Clifford Brown All-Stars including Roach and saxophonists Herb Geller and Joe Main, then the huge All Star Live Jam Session with Geller, Land, trumpeters Clark Terry and Maynard Ferguson, and vocalist Dinah Washington. The vocal work continues with Brown's seminal albums with Sarah Vaughan and Helen Merrill, and the sensitivity Brown shows there comes full flower with his Clifford Brown with Strings, a rare example of a jazz-with-strings album that actually works, thanks to his beautiful phrasing on "Stardust" and others. Then it's back to the classic Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet, with Sonny Rollins eventually replacing Land in what's considered one of the all-time-great jazz ensembles. Brownie isn't a perfect package: It includes a ton of bonus tracks--that's a good thing, but the integrity of the original albums is lost. For example, disc 3 consists of three takes of "Coronado," 43 minutes in all. And of course while this 10-disc set is a great collection, any Brown lover still needs to pick up Sonny Rollins Plus Four and at least some of his Blue Note work--A Night at Birdland or, for gourmands, the perfect bookend to this set, the four-disc Complete Blue Note & Pacific Jazz Recordings. --David Horiuchi

Jazz Masterpiece.......2002-02-04
Clifford Brown may not be as famous as Louis Armstrong or Miles Davis, but he left an enduring mark in the history of jazz,
and many musicians and fans consider him to be one of the finest improvisers and composers of the 1950's.
Among jazz trumpet players, Brown has an almost god like status. If you want to be taken seriously as a jazz trumpet player, you had better know Brown's compositions and you should be able to improvise in a style reminiscent of Brown.
The Emarcy Clifford Brown set in an essential document of Brown's career. It has crucial recordings of his most famous compositions and great tracks with the master jazz singers. That by itself is worth the price of admission, but there is more. There are jam sessions, and a great album with Helem Merrill.
So what you get is a complete document of a jazz great playing with other jazz greats, on some recordings which went on to define jazz in the years to come. The recording quality is good, and should satisfy all but the most hard core audiophiles.
This is essential material for fans of hard bop, jazz songs and jazz trumpet. You really can't go wrong.
The only major criticism I have is that the CD's put alternate takes next to the originals, so unless you program your CD player, you get repition. I don't care what people say, but when Clifford Brown wrote "Joy Spring" he sure didn't expect people to listen to it three times in a row. It's just annoying.
Just one word: Essential!.......1999-11-28
This is a terrific collection! Every single note that Clifford recorded for the EmArcy label in 1954 and 1955 is included here, and that means: 11 albums plus a lot of bonus tracks. Listening to this immense body of work makes one wonder how a man in his mid-twenties could have achieved that much - as a trumpet player, as a bandleader, as a creative musician. The set is constantly thrilling, you won't find a weak track here. - CDs 1, 2, 9 and 10 contain the quintet recordings with Harold Land and Sonny Rollins (the original releases: Clifford Brown & Max Roach, Brown & Roach Inc., Study In Brown, More Study In Brown, At Basin Street). The original compositions (Swingin`, The Blues Walk, Sandu,...) are all first-rate and executed with an unparalleled feeling for the 'right notes' - every single solo is downright perfect. The band really functions as a unity - just listen to the final section on The Blues Walk when the trumpet/saxophone chases have gone down to half-bar (!) chases and the horns of Brown and Land blend almost like a single instrument! - The versions of standards like Cherokee and Stompin` at the Savoy border on definitive, at least as far as the Hardbop era is concerned. There is a lot of fun, too, like the 'train' intro to Take The A Train and the many quotes from other tunes, especially by pianist Richie Powell. I Get A Kick Out Of You and Love Is A Many Splendored Thing with their special arrangements (with changing meters) are a particular joy to listen to; if you've heard Art Blakey's version of Moon River, you've got an idea of the feelings these performances evoke. Wonderful stuff throughout! - CDs 3 and 4 contain the long jams recorded with the Clifford Brown All Stars (the original releases: The Clifford Brown All Stars, Best Coast Jazz), featuring 3 saxophonists (Herb Geller, Joe Maini, Walter Benton). Especially Caravan is a gem, running for 15 minutes with not a second wasted. - CDs 5 and 6 contain the complete monster jam session with Dinah Washington (the original releases: Jam Session, Dinah Jams, Jams 2) in the original sequence, featuring among others Herb Geller on saxophone and Clark Terry / Maynard Ferguson on trumpet. Dinah's passionate vocals send shivers down your spine on ballads like Darn That Dream and There is No Greater Love, and they are the cream on the near-10minute-version of Lover Come Back To Me. Brilliant soloing by all musicians! Listen to I've Got You Under My Skin, with all 3 trumpet players! No need to blame Maynard Ferguson for his highnote-addicted playing, for it is well in place here. And then there's the sheer ecstasy in Move, which is played at breakneck speed and reaches levels of intensity in the first ensemble passage which few Bop records reach even in the middle of the solos... - CD 7 is the CD Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown; CD 8 combines Helen Merrill Featuring Clifford Brown and Clifford Brown With Strings. Clifford provides for the perfect counterpoint to the two (very different) vocalists. No need to say anything about Sarah Vaughan; pure beauty of sound! Helen Merrill is a highly underrated (and underrecorded) singer who CARESSES the microphone most of the time so that she seems to SHOUT when she raises her voice just slightly. - The recording with strings is a true masterpiece, fully showing Clifford's immense talent for ballad playing. The last piece in the puzzle showing his great bandwidth. -- If you like any of Clifford's recordings, chances are you'll like the whole bunch - and this box set is the peak of his output. Hardbop doesn't get any better than this!

The title is a misnomer, but the album does include all of the Piedmont bluesman's recordings for Okeh/Columbia in 1940 and 1941. A finer collection of pre-World War II country blues is not likely to be found anywhere; McGhee was a master at his craft, and the songs here are expressive, masterfully performed, and rhythmically upbeat in the best Piedmont tradition. It's mostly McGhee solo, as these tracks were recorded just before he began his famous longtime partnership with harmonica player Sonny Terry. The influence of Blind Boy Fuller is evident (McGhee once recorded as Blind Boy Fuller No. 2), but McGhee had by this time firmly established his own style. This is an exceptional collection overall and an excellent place to start delving into the Piedmont blues. --Genevieve Williams

Fun, meaningful, splendid, buy now........1999-06-06
A decent collection of vital wonderful Brownie McGhee music. Includes great sides with Buddy Moss. I prefer these recordings to the later, very good Sonny Terry collaborations. Sony has done a decent job of collecting a small library of classic songs here, though I would have liked to have seen Yazoo take it on. Worth it for Swing Soldier Swing alone.
